    If you want to clean coins, I personally put tin foil in a pan, sprinkle baking soda on it, place the coin/bar, sprinkle a little more baking soda on top and cover it with boiling kettle water. You can see the changes almost instantly. Leave it for a bit, pull it out and wipe it off. Done it for years and not toxic and the shiny comes back....

    Interesting testing by flame as an old HVAC
    Refrigeration guy we used to use a test with a propane torch with a special tip and tube to capture any escaping gas you move the tube along areas and watch the flame if it detects similar types of chemicals in the refrigerant it turns to a bright green. I may dig out my unit and try it.(some old timers still use this method) most detectors went to electronics now. I do use the wash method on occasions too. Thanks for the video

    Never use rubberbands to hold your 10 ounce silver bars together when they are in plastic sleeves. I folded them and used a rubberband on the outside to hold it together. Bad idea. I totally stained the bars. The rubberband went right through the plastic. It was a weird reaction.

      😂😂😂 yeah I f'ed up and my editing software didn't combine the clips well. I changed it early in yesterday morning in CZcams but they said it would take a few hours before the changes take effect. Hopefully that minimized the crappiness. Tarn X works as does E-zest. Unsure of tarn X but e-zest starts to damage coins after prolonged exposure and especially if it's not rinsed off completely. Acetone is cheaper and does slightly less damage (I think). Might have to do an experiment in Campbell's Lavatory, sacrifice a few coins to see what happens. Hope you're doing well bud.

    Yeah not a fan of the flips at all for the reasons you outline in this video. As somewhat of an aside, I used the baking soda, aluminum and hot water gig to clean a collectible set of coins that had toned badly. The toning came off fairly quickly, but I noticed the toning returned very quickly. Not sure if I failed to dry them off adequately or whether once toned, always toned came into play and my futile efforts to remove it were in vain.
    I never thought to use acetone to get some of the grime or residue of the coins. I guess if I had any left I could try it! 🤓

    • @CampbellsCoins
      @CampbellsCoins  Před 2 lety +2

      I missed so many comments on this video. My apologies Vert. Have you tried EZ-est? I found that works the best for toning without any scrubbing needed, less than five seconds dipped and its gone. But make sure to rinse well under running water. Acetone seems to help more with dirt. I need to do more tests for the community. Thanks bro.

    • @CampbellsCoins
      @CampbellsCoins  Před 2 lety

      I'm really late to answering this question, my apologies. I'm not getting my notifications. Based on the softness and maneuverability of the plastic, I would say those Apmex bags have some PVC. Not as much as some flips but PVC helps tame plastic's rigidity. I put basic coins like Constitutional in those hard plastic tubes and/or Airtite capsules. I only use those ziplock bags for pennies I haven't sorted yet. I like to keep things safe if things are unknown.

    The cardboard flips seem generally safe for most coins. I've had coins in them for 30 years with no problems (silver, copper, clads) as long as they're not out in the sun or an extreme environment. For rare or valuable coins I would use the hard plastic snaplock or capitol holders. I like using the Air-Tite holders for silver eagles to prevent toning.

      Yes, acetone or rubbing alcohol can be used to clean gold and any other metal, it won't do anything. The reason PVC can cause damage is because it contains chlorine groups. When exposed to light it slowly decomposes, releasing HCl (hydrochloric acid). HCl together with oxygen in the air can attack gold, but it's extremely slow and only a problem over a long time. Gold is one of the most corrosion resistant metals and barely anything can attack it.

    Here's a more detailed flame based plastics identification guide. Some details about PVC/Acrylic. It will not continue to burn after the flame is removed. It will not drip, it will be a blue flame with a yellow tip, and the smell after burning will be fruity. Also, if it is an PVC/ABS, it will have an acrid smell, yellow flame with blue edges, and it will produce black sooty smoke. modernplastics.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/how-to-identify-plastics.pdf
    Also, relative to other flexible plastics like vinyl, vinyl will have an acidic smell, it will have a yellow flame with green spurts, it will not drip, it will not stay lit after the flame is removed, and it chars and melts.
    Other flexible clear plastics include flourocarbons like FEP film. This will have a faint odor of burnt hair, it will deform but not want to combust, it will drip.
    Clear hard plastics like acrylic will want to keep burning after the flame is removed.

      It's possible but I really doubt it. PVC is designed to make plastic pliable. Hard plastic is rigid and brittle. I would say, the safer bet is coin capsules over coin flips any day. Most capsules are probably made in China anyways but it all comes down to the malleability of the plastic.
