Coin Collectors: This Video Will Save You THOUSANDS $$$

- I made a video several years ago warning you all about the dangers of storing your coins in PVC coin holders ( • Coin Collectors: This ... ). What I neglected to include in the last video is about albums. Coin albums are one of the best ways for Numismatists to enjoy their coin collections, but if you cheap out and buy cut-rate coin albums, you may end up literally destroying your coins.

Somewhere in China, a factory full of 5 year olds are upset that you dissed their products! LOL.
That’s completely false,
theyre 8 now!
I would love to see a video of your type set!! You havent done one for a while!
I would love to see them!
Coming right up :)
When are you making it silver picker? Next month?🤔
Great video, especially for the newer collector! Thanks!
This is some EXTREMELY important advice. Its really cool on your part advising people saving a bit now can really bite you in the ass in the long run.
I´d even go the extra mile and say, if you have some more expensive coins, a wooden cabinet or capsules wouldnt be a bad bet!
Really glad you appreciate it! Reading the comments and finding out that I've helped a lot of new collectors has made it so worth it!
Underrated comment! Just found a bunch of coins i really liked in a pvc binder from a few years back. Binder was not good quality and my favorite coins were in much worse condition than I remember them....hope this helps someone!
I learn so much. Thank you!!
So glad you enjoy them Sam!
I also would say that if you forgo the album and (you may have mentioned this in a prior video) store your coins in the original packaging and in in flips and encapsulation, you can use a larger plastic box with the recycle numbers 2, 4, and 5; 1 and 7 use with caution and 3 and 6 avoid. 3 is PVc and 6 is the plastic that is least recyclable and found commonly used with egg cartons (my Mom stores her costume and precious metal jewelry in them. Fortunately no green slime but then again most are not fully silver or gold or just stainless steel or gold toned metal.)
Now it all makes sense, here in the uk, we had the decimal coin set that was given to the public, it had what must have been a pvc packaging and since that set came out in 1971, the only decimal sets I’ve ever found are covered in gunk like you said
Mine isn’t covered in gunk so I presume my grandad, who gave it to me took it out the PVC cover for years and put it back in before putting it away in storage for 14 years then giving them to me so either way I’m surprised there not damaged
Those Dansco 7070s have gotten really high in price during the past year. I lost a $100 bid on one last minute, and ended up paying $130 on a buy it now listing. And I'm still pretty happy with that. I hope they either start reprinting them or someone else makes a high quality Type Set book soon.
Same I would love that
Been waiting for this video, thank you
You’ve somewhat saved my collection too. I was worried about this but thought it’d be okay since I purchased from a large coin dealer. Boy was I wrong. Purchased the album in January and the coins are sticky now. No visible damage yet
So glad to hear that this video helped! Really don't want to see precious, historic coins destroyed
I'm a beginner and there's so much info on storage. This is so helpful
So glad this was helpful!
Ahh Dood, The reason people are getting into this stuff is that they are finding out about bail in and protecting their wealth with physical assets. Not just bullion but anything that is physical , rare things physical value, outside of the stock market and banks. And so they come to one of the best people in the know of coins you. Cheers.
Thank ya kindly :)
Thanks for the information. Important for everyone who collects to be informed about.
Glad you enjoyed it Robert!
@@Silverpicker What about acid-free PVC albums?
Thank you for the information.Nice video.Greetings from The Netherlands
My pleasure! Hallo!
Thanks. You should have to me this back when I first started following you this year.
Great video and thanks so much for showcasing the beautiful albums as well as the crap.
Glad you enjoyed, Chris! (also appreciated your email!)
"Professional" coin album! Professional coin destructive power.....🤣
Exactly lol
Thanks I am a coin collecter to just started yesterday my coin collection worths milion thanks for saving my coins
Big like 1.1K my friend!
Do we really want to see a video of your typeset? Yes, absolutely. Please!
Sounds good! I'll definitely make it happen!
I used to store my coin collection in coin albums but as a coin collector newbie back then I didn't knew about the plastic's components all I know was it can protect your coins from dust and stuff, then when I learned about PVC damage I was like "uh oh", so I checked my coins and thank god there wasn't any greens on the coins but don't want this to happen so I went online and bought coin capsules instead because I heard they're air tight and more safe for coins.
Definitely smart. There are albums that are advertised as "archival safe" and "PVC free," so you can also still have an album if you want
@@Silverpicker to be fair my coin album is "pvc free" and "coin safe" but my British coins and some other nationalities have a slightly rubbery feel about them. I don't know if I can fix that or not but I've moved them all into a sealed container while I can get some coin capsules or something else
As always, great information, cheaper definitely isn’t always better when it comes to storing and preservation of one’s collectibles! Sort of that old adage, you can pay me now or pay me later😉!
Very true, Craig!
Good idea for a video. I've learned stuff today. I did consider buying albums from wish, but I felt like they were cheap quality. In the end I didn't buy them. But after seeing this video, I'm glad I didn't make that purchase.
Really glad to hear it, Rene!
I recently came across huge coin collection that someone inherited, I didn't look inside of the albums because it was full of silver coins. got it for much less than melt value. when I opened it, all coins are uncirculated include some key dates. but all covered with green and black stuffs. I throw out the whole album right away(kept the coins), so sad every time I see them ruined.
Stinks that they were all damaged, but I'll take a damaged coin collection under melt any day lol
"ALBUMinations" 😅 This video was very helpful for me. Especially because some of those alums are literaly the same albums I use.
Nice video, u save me and my coins, thanks 👌
A lot of the indicator you said are also the same for oriented polypropylene which is safe for prolonged exposure although its slightly more expensive since acid free
Good to know. Thanks Evan
Can we get an updated link to good quality 2x2 holders or albums? I just started collecting recently and had my silver coins in an album from amazon for about 10 days. Been doing some research and came across your video. Thank you for the info! Took all my coins out and tossed the album. Will my coins be okay after this 10 day period or should I clean them with acetone?
Do I have to buy the kit or can I just buy the album itself ?
I've bought a couple of albums from Lighthouse. They have PVC pages, but good quality plastic coin holders that slide in and out. Should I get rid of the albums? PVC doesn't touch my coins.
I remember when you reviewed your type set like a long time ago
I guess I'm due for an update!
Does these chinese albums fit a coin holder? Instead of only the coin itself?
I was wondering, ok the PVC if in contact eith the coins will tuin them over time, but what if the coins are in the coin holders? Will there be any effect on the coins?
I wouldn't risk it
thanks great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey Silver Picker! Great video, and it got me thinking... need some advice, I recently picked up a 2010 Fiji Taku 1oz silver coin, first year of issue in original mint packaging. It’s a great looking coin, but the reason I’m bringing it up is because the OGP seems to have all the characteristics of PVC. Being 10 years old it already seems to have some kind of halo effect on the obverse; it may already be damaging the coin. My question is.. should I break the seal and put it in a capsule or leave it in the OGP?? What’s your call?
The saying “buy the coin, not the holder” comes to mind, I think I’ll liberate it.
I totally hear that. Send me a pic to my email thesilverpicker@gmail.com and I'll let you know what I think
I have the cardboard flip, binders, and pages that can hold about 20 2x2 flips. I don't think that this is too expensive of an option. I have 3. It is how I store most of my nicer collection including my British penny collection (i need to find the British penny Whitman folder. I also have 1 dansco for my Lincoln pennies, 4 Whitman folders from a flea market, 1940s. The holes shrunk with age so I have to manually widen them. It is how I store my Indians, and my few mercs and rosies that I own. I also have a small strange album that looks like a whitman but just has pages with tiny holders. I use it for my canadian small cents. The more modern and not special coinage goes in bags based on country and for american stuff, by denomination.
When I bought my wheat penny album I got a Warman’s for 5 dollars on amazon and the set of America the beautiful and State quarter book set for like 7 dollars on Amazon and it holds like 116-7 coins from Denver and Philly each cause one part is the map that you put the coins in and the other half is a list of the states to put the coins in
I stored my coins in these cheap PVC albums for a few of weeks. Do I need to give them a cleaning before transferring to a non-pvc flip?
I remember getting a coin album at hobby lobby to put my coins it. It fell apart but all my coins that were in it were also in cardboard 2x2s
At least the coins were protected!
Back when I was real young I had a PVC penny book for my wheaties. By the time I got into older coins and learned about storing those I went back and took all the wheaties out!! It was probably just a few years and nothing seemed to be damaged. I got lucky.
Definitely, Mark. I've heard lots of real horror stories of people's collections being totally ruined (and often times just after a few years of storage)
Irecently threw out what few PVC flips I had. It hurt man, it hurt.
But could you still use a PVC album with your coin in a safe 2x2 cardboard flip? Slide safe flip in unsafe album?
Hi, can coin capsules affect the coin overtime ?
I wonder what kind of ink they used on the black paper in that bill album. First thing I’d do would be to get rid of that paper and add acid free archival paper
That's actually a really good call
For me, when I bought one,I check the pages of the album and it didn't stick together and I thought it's not PVC but I'm still concerned because it also smells like the plastic they use in inflatable swimming pools, it is also flexible and malleable just like you said about the properties of pvc,and when I put my coins in the sleeves, overtime it started to sound like it's sticking together so I'm concerned if it's PVC or maybe some kind of plastic like EVA to anyone that can answer my question, feel free to reply on this comment thank you.
Does polypropylene hurt coins. I just brought a coin book on Amazon from a company called condorbox and they said there sheet are polypropylene
My coin albums are 3" D-Ring, 20-Pocket Mylar Pages (x15) in 2x2 "Flips." Bank Notes are "size oriented" in 3" D-Ring Binders. A lot of work, but enjoyable for me😍.
And I'm sure it looks spectacular!
Hopefully you’ll respond but where did you buy these 3 ring binder Mylar pages, I’ve been looking forever and only like the 3 ring binder ones and don’t like having folders
I’m nearly finished transferring my collection from PVC albums into their temporary homes, ziploc bags. I’ll buy some higher-quality 2x2s to store them in permanently.
Smart. Glad to hear you are in the process of saving your collection!
@@Silverpicker so zip lock baggie are OK till you can make sure a coin is really valuable ??? I'm saving for a strong magnifier to Ck. them.
I might have a PVC album but I’m not sure. Does it help if my coins are in two by twos? Will that not stop the PVC from ruining them?
It would definitely help, but it's not worth the risk overall. The gasses that come off the plastic can still get to the coin.
Hey silver picker can you make a video about the best 1 oz silver to buy
I got seven of those albums where I store my world coins for almost a year now. Haven’t ndividually checked on them yet. This will be a concern for me. How about coin capsules, will they be as bad too or a better option? Ty.
Coin capsules can be a good option, but it doesn't really replace an album.
I trusted you and ordered the bow paper currency album linked in the description. Once I got it the pages were all stuck together and it is completely PVC. Thanks a lot. Now I know not to trust you.
Lighthouse, and the Vista albums are very good albums as well.
Agreed, Patrick!
True, I've been using lighthouse since forever and I'm quite satisfied.
What's the story with coin capsules? I would assume they're all made of PVC? I'm new to coin collection I want to make sure that I buy something that doesn't destroy my coins. I prefer the capsules to be honest.
I only use these albums for in-expensive non silver world coins
Well I went with quality 2inch flips then I got good sheets to put those flips in. All acid free PVC free. Then I used nice hard Albums all free of things that could damage my coins. This gives me a chance to put all size coins plus it allows me to put NIFC or Error and Variety coins from any size or any type coin. I do keep world coins separate. That's just me. Plus it's easy to store. I wont buy cheap for something worth alot of money.
That sounds like a very good call! Nicely done!
Hey, SP, I have note holders that say rigid PVC from BCW that says they are free of plasticizers. Opinion on those?
If it's from BCW, intended for numismatics, and not produced 20 years ago, I would trust it
what if you store them in a cardboard 2 by 2 in a pvc page, will it still damage the coins?
I think it very well could. I definitely wouldn't risk it. You can get the BCW album (amzn.to/3iuvR9j) that comes with 2x2s and it's just $25. That's affordable for any coin collector.
obsessed with coins but theyre very educational!
I have a question, what do you recommended to remove pvc residue? Alcohol? Ezest? Do they harm the coin less then the pvc? Do not plan on getting the coins graded.
Acetone is the recommended treatment in most cases.
@@Silverpicker thank you !!
Would these be okay for say using 12 months or less?
Is the pvc bad for only the silver coins or for all the coins?
all
Hi there, what do you think of the Schulz albums?
I'm not familiar with them
You COULD trim a 2x2 down to fit in the spots.
شكرا لك ،هل هذا ألبوم خاص بجمع التملات المعدنية ألامريكية ؟أم أنه عام لكل عملات دول أخرى ،تحياتي ❤
Is there non pvc plastic that still smell plastic? My album pages seems more flexible than the two by two you showed and do smell like plastic if I snif them. But they never stick togeter and are not has flexible than the pvc exemple....
I think it depends, but if you didn't get it from a reputable seller of numismatic products, I wouldn't risk it
What if there in coin capsules in there?
The bad thing is though that there really aren't any albums that are pvc free
Can someone please tell me if lighthouse albums that fit 60 2x2 mylar flips are good/safe for long term storage cant seem to find a presentation box for all my 2x2 mylar flips that isn't potentially hazardous to my very rare coins I don't understand why there isn't just a garunteed safe coin album any help is appreciated.
Dansco and Whitman albums I would recommend only for coins from a country you do not live in and difficult to get. Also good for countries that no longer exist such as Palestine British Mandate. This is especially the case if your collection o US Coins is very diverse.
I'm still trying to find a Dansco British Mandate of Palestine album. They're really tough to find
Realized mine was this 😢 I got mine at hobby lobby. It wasn’t this bad but I could smell it. It was also stuck together. Would these me fine in 2 x 2 that are safe?
I wouldn't risk it. Better to throw away a $10 album now than potentially lose hundreds down the road
you know it's bad when the pages stick together. years ago i did buy some piece dollars from a well known dealer that came in 2x2's made of pvc, checked several years later, Green Slime, had to dip the coins, they were BU now i have cleaned coins that I may get AU price for them.
That's for sure!
Can you send me a link to one that has 150 of these coin flaps without PVC?
As a book
Wanna see update on type set and a video about coin folders
Will do! Thanks!
Does polypropylene hurt coins. I just brought a coin book on Amazon from a company called condorbox and they said there sheet are polypropylene
Are the Whitman and Harris coin folders safe?
Definitely the new ones are. Not 100% sure about the ones from the 1970s
What about the 2x2 album called TACC ?
Damn...I have all my wheats in the third one you posted, the world coin stock one. I'm about to change that real quick
100% good idea
i would really like you to show a type set video
Coming right up ;)
i wanna know were to get the blue small one for my tokens, which are no value
Omg thanks so much Max, I just got my coins out of the album and threw the crappy thing out lmao
💪
I'm curious whether putting coins in a 2x2 flip and then in a PVC album (no contact with the actual coin) would damage the coin in the future?
Coin will still get damaged, but it will take some time. (In a few months)
The PVC will leach onto the holder and then will attack the edge of the coin. Then there will be green sludge on the edge of your coin
@@King_BlueBalls I wonder why no one makes them safe for coins considering literally coins go in them I am having a difficult time finding a presentation album that isn't potentially hazardous to my coins in some way any suggestions
Nooooooooooo I have my best coins in an album like this!!!
From Ali Express......
Definitely get them out of there!
@@Silverpicker yeah just spent the last hour doing so. Only some had PVC damage but they were worth more than $100 so a costly mistake! Thanks so much for the vid or else they would have kept getting worse every day!
Your links to Amazon say "unavailable"... Do you have any other recommendations?
amzn.to/3M5m767
amzn.to/3M8JDis
hmmm... i.m using mylar flips put in BCW pages, but i have them in a mead school three-ring binder... i'm kind of wondering if the binder is safe...?
I'd say it's fine
what about LIGHTHOUSE Kaskade albums? they seem good and claim to be good but are they?
Well, this video has shown me that my local coin store puts the coins into PVC flips when you buy them. Thank goodness I always take them out anyway as soon as I've driven home
Smart. Do they warn you to let you know?
@@Silverpicker no warning at all. They're a shifty group of people. They got caught last year selling fake Silver Eagle dollars. The wish dot com garbage. Surprised they're still in business to be honest
They could all be "acid free PVC."
The BCW paper currency album contains vinyl which is PVC, does this affect the notes like it does the coins?
Yes they do
@@King_BlueBalls How so? and do you know if lighthouse mini banknote albums are safe
My Question is are my Coin Album from Amazon Are Good This Album is the Front Is In Russian translate Album for Coin For 10 Euro is this good please Help Me This Question
Do you recommend the renniks coin albums I have australian coins?
Don't know anything about them
Is clear pvc and pvc are the same?
I'm not 100% sure to be honest
Same goes for for record collecting, PVC is a NO-NO!
What's that red coca cola box thing behind you and where can i get it?
I bought mine at crownmint.com
@@Silverpicker (Oh my god silver replied!!!!) Thank you
You should throw some pennies or junk coins in those cheapo folders and see how long it takes for them to turn. Maybe put them in a hot environment or direct sunlight to see if it speeds up the process
Not a bad experiment
I love the coke set, I got it and I love it and it is so cool
Thanks Logan! Glad you like it!
I bought the same as the first one from eBay in red.
I'd avoid using it though
Why didn’t you show an example of a album that’s like those that is acceptable. Seems to me that’s the way any of them are even like baseball card albums. 🤔
Please do an updated dansco 7070 video!
I think I will!
try the brand light house they have very could currency albums
Yes indeed!
can you clean the green gunk off or not
Yes, with acetone as i know
Plastic is generally made from petroleum((byproduct of gasoline refinement) or made from petrochemicals such as polylactic acid from corn(soybean as well) or cellulosics. So i would say eventually every type of plastic holder will fail/decompose/degenerate.
That may be true, but some plastics like mylar don't damage the coins as they degrade
As being younger, I can’t afford most coins and I really hate how expensive stuff is for me, my coin collection is just cheaper coins but I still have fun with it
I don’t buy from wish cause I know it’s a scam
I collect world coins, mostly worthless world coins I get for 15 cents. I understand my dude, I'm also younger
Collecting on a budget can actually be fun because it removes all of the nonsense around coin value and allows you to collect more out of interest and passion for the hobby. Can actually be a positive
I know we love to hate in China for these pieces of junk, but they also make decent and good stuff there too. It just costs the seller more, so why bother when this isn’t an immediate concern.
I like your Coin video . And I like about world Coin an American coin. I would like A South out one day.
Thanks Dylan!
