I had the great opportunity to meet Gene Clark, and was very star struck. He was kind, put me at ease, and we had a great conversation. Also, in my opinion, No Other is one of the best "bass" records ever. A truly remarkable achievement by my favorite bassist. Thanks for the great video and thanks for your great artistry on No Other.
“Strength of Strings” was unique and really strong for the time... still holds up well
At the time I think people expected a more spare country-rock production from Gene. But this completely predicted what would come along a year or two later with Fleetwood Mac. I’m happy that it is finally receiving recognition for the stone classic it is.

Gene being part of the blocks that create the country rock road is very important to me. Gene left the Byrds and needed more coverage but gets its now.
In 1975 a government funded youth radio station took to the airwaves in Sydney Australia. Through Double J and adventurous DJs like George Wayne and Mac Cocker, we teenagers suddenly had access to a whole world of music previously unavailable. One of these guys introduced me to No Other and it was genius. The voice of an angel with an incredible lineup of session musicians. Thank you Leland for your amazing contribution to it. After all these years it remains for me one of the greatest albums of all time. I was privileged to see you perform live with Phil last year - keep the videos coming!
I bought that Gene Clark album in 1975 and played it constantly. Thank you Leland for all you do and have done for music.

This album had an impact on me from the very first time I listened to it, when it was released. It was a spiritual experience for me. At one time I had committed the lyrics to memory. I would sing the songs acapella for friends occasionally. No Other is one of my all time favorite albums.
Never met Gene, but I do miss him. One of the greatest songwriters EVER.
I appreciate your efforts to shine a light on the greatness of Gene Clark. I saw McGuinn, Clark, & Hillman in ‘79 or ‘80. It remains a highlight among all of the live shows I’ve seen. Not because of Byrds songs as I had expected, but because of the few songs Gene performed solo. He blew me away! Prior to the show, he was the one I knew almost nothing about and I left feeling I had just made an extremely important discovery. Hence, it was sad not to have heard much more from him and then to learn he passed way so prematurely. Thank you for sharing this song!
Yeah, I saw them too, around the same time frame. They were very good, but seeing the Dixie Dregs twice in the same club was even better! Actually they were known simply as the Dregs by then; Mark O'Connor was playing violin with them, the last time I saw them before they broke up.
Seen them in Manchester United Kingdom. A brilliant show.

Lee's generosity in celebrating other artists is so admirable. And the fact that near the end of this video he somehow remembered a Bowie session he did for Cat People made me laugh out loud. And he wasn't invoking fake humility. He truly hadn't recalled the session until it somehow entered his mind. That demonstrates three things: how prolific he is...how genuine a person he is...and how truly great a player he is. #lovinglee

This became one of my favorite albums after I watched this vlog. I’d never heard of it before. So damn great. I love that it gave musicians soooo much freedom and creativity. ❤️💙💜💜💙
Sadly too much freedom & expensive studio time according to the Asylum Label Boss (apparently), who didn’t support it on release. Maybe a couple other reasons in there too, but….. Wow… a record “ before it’s time” & really creatively, something totally unexpected and “ out of the box”, like nothing Gene had recorded previously soundwise.
So, so glad he got to record it though and with such a great cast of Players including Mr Sklar. I think the musicians & singers walked out of Village Recorders at the end of the sessions knowing they were creating something unprecedented and unique with Gene Clark’s words and melodies. ❤

My fav. Gene song is Spanish Guitar from his previous record, but No Other is greatest album for sure...
I remember hearing this song as a teenager on an "underground" FM station in Chicago. I did not remember who it was and was unaware at the time of the name or reputation of Gene Clark. But the song really stuck with me and I am glad that I re-discovered it just a few years ago.

Yes! White Light, almost the antithesis of No Other in it’s simplicity but I love it equally as much. It’s like sitting cosy inside around a log fire listening to a beloved and talented friend sing his soul to you. ❤

This has been one of my favorite recordings since it came out in the 70's. Leland, your playing is just brilliant; I especially love the part under the guitar solos when the cowbell doubles the beat. Awesome!
Le - I've been enjoying your channel so much, but only came across this video today. What a thrill that you were a part of one of my favorite albums. I agree with you that it is great Gene is finally getting the respect he deserves, albeit too late. I saw a group of younger musicians from some well known indie bands (Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Wye Oak, and others) perform the No Other album in full a few years ago and it was incredible to see the crowd--young and old--coming together to appreciate a lost classic. Thank you so much for your work on this masterpiece and for sharing some tales about making it!

This record was a great find for me more than 20 years ago. And even then I knew I was late to hearing it. Gene Clark really had a prolific career after the Byrds and made a string of terrific records. And I really like that Leland played bass on this record.
Back in the good old days when the Detroit area had some great progressive radio stations WABX, etc., they used to play that song occasionally. I haven't heard it since then, it brought back good memories, thanks so much Leland, you sir, are the 'gum on my shoe' that I appreciate.

I only recently became aware of Gene Clark's No Other album thanks to Steven Wilson putting it on one of his album lists and i'm absolutely blown away by it. It really is a great story and there seems to be no shortage of these sort of lost albums popping up year after year.
You’re a terrific storyteller. It’s wonderful to hear the back story on what might be my favorite album. It blew me away in 1974 when I bought the record and I’ve bought various reissues including last year’s spectacular box set from 4AD. My friend Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of 4AD covered Strength of Strings and With Tomorrow on two This Mortal Coil albums and has long been a champion of Gene’s music. I sent him this CZcams tonight, I know he’ll love.

Artists are amazing people, regardless of the medium they perform in; written words, pigments, musical notes. I listen to a song and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, someone plays a second or two riff on an ocarina, and I wonder why. Who thought that was what the song needed? Lee, 4AD did a massive reissue of No Other last November with multiple outtakes which also sound really great! Have you heard it? The album received a lot of great press and praise. Leland, I've enjoyed you since the early 70's. You are undoubtedly my favorite bassist...with a nod to Jack Bruce, who is right there, too. Thank you for your perspective on the current state of our lives. My wife is an RN and my son manages an out patient diagnostic imaging facility and he's face to face with COVID-19 patients every day. It's all too real. Love your channel and insights into the music of my life. It's been a great journey. Glad we're still on it.

It's great on the CD release of this to hear the demo versions of the tracks and how the parts evolved. One of my all time favourite albums for sure due in no small part to the wonderful melodic bass parts of Mr Sklar.
Zappa gave us "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" and now Leland gives us Parrots Pooped On My Back! Hysterical!!
Recently found my old Byrds ticket stub from 1966, has photo of them including Gene. I loved the band, Gene was my favorite for his singing and songwriting, and obvs he was a fine-looking guy. I was 15 and tragically disappointed when Gene wasn't with them at the concert, but was still awesome, especially for my podunk small southern town. Me and gf kept pestering guy guarding backstage to get autographs for us, I need to find my signed playbill. Love "No Other" and everything Gene Clark. Thx, Lee.
Thank you for this. I managed a record store in San Francisco when this album came out and we played it in store a lot. It didn’t sell much but when we played it folks would grab it. I just heard from a friend that one Gene’s son’s Kelly just passed away in SF two weeks ago. So sad. ✌🏻
Hey Leland Do you remember "Don't You Write Her Off Like That" by McGuinn, Clark & Hillman? Minor impact on top 40 but did well on adult cotemporary..it's one of those songs that got lost in the scramble of time.
I’d also like to thank you for paying tribute to Stephen Bruton. I go to Austin, TX frequently and have gotten to know musicians who knew Bruton well and played with him. ATX musicians revere him - regularly paying tribute to his greatness as a player, songwriter, and human being. It is quite common to hear his songs played. You’ve said you love to scour CZcams in the wee hours when unable to sleep - something we have in common. If you are unfamiliar with Bruton’s ATX music life, check out vids of The Resentments, an ensemble of great ATX players/songwriters that he created. They had/have a weekly residence at Saxon Pub - a great venue Bruton put on the map. Each week members who were in town came and performed a song swap where everybody backed up everyone else with lots of improvised yet tasteful soloing. Bruton continued to play with The Resentments up until shortly before he passed, and the ensemble continues the residency today. Indeed, some members, like Scrappy Jud Newcomb and Jeff Plankenhorn, who are among my all-time favorite musicians, were among the many younger musicians Bruton very generously mentored and encouraged. There are some wonderful vids from when Bruton was playing, and of course many that are more recent, but the spirit of Bruton is always present.

I’m a huge Gene Clark fan and this is one of the first albums ever heard of his and it changed my life. When I heard these albums didn’t go anywhere it had the opposite effect for me and inspired me beyond belief to share my music and truth “success or not here I come”. It doesn’t matter. Truth is all that matters and Gene Clark has that in his music in spades. Thank you so much for sharing this awesome story.

I appreciated your tribute and stories of Gene Clark. I have been a fan of his from the Byrds til the end of his career. I was a Dillards fan and bought the 2 Dillard and Clark albums when they came out. On You Tube there's a good video of Gene Clark and Carla Olson doing "Gypsy Rider" on the old Nashville Now TV show. The great Hal Rugg is playing steel on the song. I'm hooked on your You Tube site so thanks for that. By the way, my brother played piano in the Wayzata High School stage band in Minnesota with the fellow who followed you in James Taylor's band - Jim Johnson.

Holy crap! was just looking up interviews with Gene Clark because No Other has been a favorite of mine since I learned about it several years ago (I'm 23 for reference). Then I found this and did some reading . . . Spectrum is also one of my favorite albums of the 70s! I'll have to look into other stuff you've played on
