Gene Clark is still my leading vote getter for the most under appreciated American songwriter of the last 50+ years. And thanks for shining a light on Jesse Ed, who was a force of nature on the guitar.
Just watched a documentary called "Rumble" about the contributions to and the influences of First Nations musicians on American music which had a short part about Jesse Ed Davis.
Thank you featuring your work with the great Gene Clark again. 💗
Fabulous contribution the best album of all time. Amazing work underpinning and enhancing Gene's incredible melodies, voice and songs.
It is just so sad that many of Gene Clark's greatest songs will be heard by so very few people, for example 'On the Run', and 'Past Addresses', 'White Light', and 'For a Spanish Guitar', etc. People have little idea of what they are missing here.
I still can't work out why Gene did not achieve wider recognition for his songwriting and why he remains very much still a 'cult' artist. To me, music is all down to the strength of the songs and Gene wrote so many great songs that it is just a crying shame that so much of his great work has only just about found the light of day. Good songs are hard to find these days and probably always were, but Gene wrote them in abundance..
Hey Lee. No apologies required. You have a life too and we appreciate you taking ANY of you time to sped with us. Cheers, thank you for today's music and have a great day!
Leland has been most kind to share his time here with all of us, but if we learned anything it is that Leland loves his work as a musician playing live with other musicians.
His generosity is beyond measure.
That is pretty special I think, the guy has a great voice.
I bought No Other the first week it came out, I've lost count of how many copies I've worn out and now on CD. It defines the 70's. The craftsmanship is stellar. There is nothing to compare it too. Gene loved to sing and I love hearing him sing. I think I miss Gene as much as I miss Jimi and that says all there is to say. Thank you Leland for paying attention to Gene.
Thanks for the encore on Gene Clark. Your playing, commentary and insights are deeply appreciated, treasured💌thanks✨
Gene Clark's album 'No Other' is added to the "I didn't realise..." list of your work that I've admired without being aware of your involvement.
'Strength Of Strings' is so packed with angst and trauma, yet Clark's own strength to keep battling inspires from beyond the grave.
Still stands up musically too.
That rhythm section holding it high and steady, though...! ❤️
Leland and others too deserve more recognition for their work. 👍
An all time favourite. Lovely to listen again. Thank you, thank you!
As I said before I met briefly with Gene at a Byrds tribute show in Sanford FL in 2008. After the Byrds set I asked if he could do some tunes from No Other… Man, he lit Up!
Which one? He asked.
Do all of it I said!
Absolutely gorgeous.
I just purchased this album on CD recently after your last Gene Clark encore.
It's now on my all-time favorites list.
A masterpiece.
Thank you.
Joe Lala was a good friend and fellow player until our paths diverged. We jammed a few times in my garage/studio. And that reminds me I owe his ex-wife Marjie a call. Haven't talked in a while. Before Manassas & CSNY, Joe was in Blues Image. Besides seeing the three-piece Byrds at whatever the old Earl Carroll Theatre was calling itself in 67 or 68 (Aquarius Theatre?), I saw Dillard & Clark's debut at the Troubadour and somehow caught by chance Gene Clark's band in the early-to-mid 80s at Filthy McNasty's -- I don't think it had become the Viper Room yet -- and Michael Clarke was on drums, so two Byrds... Gene's story is another boulevard of broken dreams kind of thing and we're all made less with the loss of him.
Lala played with Firefall as well right?
@@randyschiffer3265 He recorded with them, but as a sideman, not a member.
Great to hear Gene Clark this morning..very good memories..thank you for mentioning Ben Kieth..a dear friend…actually taught me how to Catfish in the California Aquaduct..Man could really catch em…and taught me how to skin em on a board with a pair of pliers…
Great days….lots of really amazing stories….lots of belly laughs….
Happy days everyone…Cheers

Was literally just checking for an upload a couple minutes ago! Gene Clark - excellent!
Gene's best instrument was his voice. So distinctive and resonant. I think McGuinn emulated it a bit, And his songwriting...I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better; Set You Free This Time; No Other; Eight Miles High; Train Leaves Here This Morning; You Showed Me; Full Circle; She Don't Care About Tme...
More and more stuff I'm jonesing to splurge on if I'm ever in the position to again.
Backing vocals on Life's greatest fool are great. Thank you for the material about Gene. His melodies and vocals are very touching
Leland is a walking music encyclopedia. It would take 10 old juke boxes just to store the songs he has memorized in his head
A definite Mike Nesmith vibe going on too. McGuinn, Clark and Hillman were marvelous.
😊🌊
@@splashesin8 Audrey!
Hey there, Lee and everyone! Lee, I no longer get a crease of concern on my forehead when you skip a day. But still, your absence is felt. As for your assessment of the world as you close each video-the message comes through that our time is limited; take care of yourself and each other.
This added some ballast to this great recording- thanks Lee -- very informative...
Tough getting old . You got this, we all have confidence. Stay safe,
Thank you so much for your work and recollections.
Gosh Leland, you’ve made me just another album buy, sheeesh, don’t tell my wife 😳
Sometimes I seem do be dialectic shuffling with words 🤣
Thanks Leland for revisiting Gene Clark, I definitely feel like he never got his due; Except among other songwriters I suppose.
There is a long list, sorry to say.
Agree
Your so right Leland. Life is so fleeting. Thank you for sharing yours with us.
The thing that stands out for me from today’s selection is the ability for the Bass to take a counter melodic role, especially on the last two tracks. The musicians may have left the bandstand but their legacy lives on. 🙏
Thank you Lee for the beautiful Gene Clark memories. I have the cover of this record in front of me. I bought the LP in a small record shop (which unfortunately no longer exists, like so many ...) in Hamburg. This record has survived all my moves and is still with me, as is the first single I bought (from the Beatles : "Eight days a week" Back cover: "No reply"...
You have your mother's heart......thank you
Long fade.......Another sign of seventies album!!!!
I would love an Immediate Family live concert CD/DVD some day! Great for your videos Lee.
Claudia Lennear was featured in the documentary 20 Feet From Stardom. She's still a great singer!
Such a great doc. The director did our Troubadour Reunion tour movie too!
Le.... relax. We love you, and that's all that matters. You continue to kick ass and you don't worry when we worry... you worry when we stop worrying... that'll never happen!!
I had the chance to meet Gene Clark and he was a real gentleman. Your work on No Other is exquisite. It is a great record that Leland Sklar made greater.
Good evening Leland and everybody
Ann, 😊🌊
I love the early 70's album sound!!!!!!
I Remember McGuinn Clark and Hillman in 1979
Me too, saw them at the Venue in London. ❤️👍
You are doing a great job keeping wonderful musicians in our minds
It's nice to be very busy! Much *much* better than having nothing to do! 🙂
Leland I signed up for The Immediate Family Film website. I received my first email with a sneak peek. It looks fantastic.
the music is great! whenever I feel down, I look for something to make me laugh. It's great for your brain chemistry!
Just when I think I know all about Leland's massive body of work, I find out he played bass on Brian Hyland's "Gypsy Woman"!!!
Thanks for that info
Hi Leland and thanks for the music and the great stories about all those musicians you've worked with over the years
We are limited on this planet earth
Every morning I grab my day with both hands and try my best to just enjoy it and let nothing get in my way
Your videos I watch first thing in the morning or late in the night just after work 😃
Have a brilliant weekend Leland ☮️
From the first day, I bought this album it was a favorite. Too bad it did not receive the recognition it deserves. Everybody did their part, your bass lines are so right on. Thank you, Lee!
misunderstanding was real moving, we re all feeling this, time passing, missing people, wondering about our own time. im so glad i found you, heart on your sleeve xoxo
Hello, Lee! 🙂👋
Thanks for enlightening me via another of your videos.
I didn't know enough about Gene Clark and his music before I watched this. Have a nice night. 🌙
Thanks so much for another dive into "No Other." Hearing it through your ears makes me appreciate it's glory more & more.
Lee dig the classic duffel bag on the armoir behind you!!!!! I miss those bags.
That while album is just breathtaking. I'm currently reading Gene's biography and learned that he wrote Some Misunderstanding in his sleep!! Woke up and asked for a pen and paper immediately to get it down. Amazing stuff, very similar in many ways to another great, Townes Van Zandt.
I heard a story yesterday on NPR about how Van Dyke Parks has worked with Gaby Moreno on her new album and previously. Very interesting and great music.
SO glad to see you, Lee! You're so diligent about posting over the years that you've spoiled us - to the point where we worry if we don't see you daily - Ha! Thank you for some more Gene Clark and your stories. Awesome! I hope you have a lovely weekend and get to catch some chill time for yourself.
This is great! I'm glad you kept letting it play! There's so much in it!
🔥✨✨✨
I agree, I was saying to myself please don't pull the plug for those of us in the moment. ✌
Thank you so much for all you do. Take care of yourself. From Paris, thanks. Peace and Love.
Loved this record when I first heard it. On first listen knew it would be one of my all time favorites. And I remember seeing Leland in the liner notes, which in some ways lead me here. Enjoy these segments.
First, thank you for sending your healing vibes to me! I happen to have my (Frankenstein) 73 J bass with flats out out and it sounded pretty much dead on to you .Then I took out my P-bass with roundwounds and it sounded dead on! Like Joco said "it's all in the hands."
Until you featured "No Other" several posts ago I have to be honest I'd never heard the album, However, I was able to track down a beautifully remastered CD copy which now has pride of place in my collection so a million thanks yous to your good self for opening my ears to this.
There you go again…..building up your CD library!! 😉👋
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 Well spending money on music is never a bad thing, now stands at 933 😁
It was remastered in 2019 with a deluxe version and with different takes not in the first released recording.
Ahhh, the life of an in-demand musician. Work work work. 😉 Hoped to see some pics from the Sisters OR gig. Sounded like an incredible event, and you & Steve had great accommodation in those cabins.
Anyway, today’s music really brought back memories of much loved music. Truly, I could listen to your fascinating recollections of sessions past which left us with brilliant music from amazing, talented people like Gene Clark. I hope you'll continue to 'conduct' us through many more of these moments. (Love your 'maestro movements' with your hand conducting.)
*I met Shirley Matthews (they personnel misspelled her name as 'Sherlie') back in the 1963 when her single 'Big Town Boy' was released. A Canadian singer, Shirley's success with Big Town Boy earned her Female Vocalist of the Year in 1964. Thanks for mentioning her as one of the backup singers, along with Claudia Lennear, Carlena Williams, Cindy Bullens, Clydie King, Venetta Fields. They're so often overlooked. 'No Other' wasn't appreciated as much until after it was reissued.
Did not post any from the gig since it was a private party and I know my place…
Hello lee and everyone. I’m not worried at all about your “lifespan” I know for sure you are going to be far in your ninety’s before you are going to be playing TAKE ME HOME and even then you are still jumping over fences and play with your rascals in your garden. I will simply not allow you. 😉
In this dreadful world we need people like you very much. You give us joy and pleasure.
I’m grown quite attached to you. I think more people are.
Thank you for these songs. They were very nice and old. 1976?
Side note: saw a video from Judith Owen where she and you played Aquarius. 7 years ago. Very good song. 💕
Greetings sir. 🙏🏻
Thanks for opening my ears to what is old is now new. This wonderful noise is just perfect. Big Danny O' Keefe fan, and this so much reminds me of his catalog.
The bass on Silver Raven is beautiful.
It sure is! This is why I want the whole album, just like why I wanted Cat People soundtrack, while the end credits were rolling, and drove around Denver all day till I found it. 😅
Reminds me just how good this album is. Great stuff.
Thank you! Love 'Silver Raven' of course.
Same. 😊🌊
I'm not familiar with your second blue icon
These songs really hooked me. A great listen. Thanks, Lee. 👏👏
Yes ! Super melodic bass parts! Thank You As Always!
Thumbs up!!! Athousand times bro.
Wow, these songs were incredible. Gotta check out more of Mr Clark. Hi Lee and everyone 🖕🥰
Kentucky Linda, 😊🌊
@@splashesin8 Hey there 👋
Thanks Lee.A bunch of new songs for me.So many gone but not really.
Oh my gosh I'm so happy I stuck around to know who you are! "When We Are Young we listen to the music as we grow older we listen to the words"! Thank you sir! ✌️✌️✌️🤟
P. S. I don't know who quoted those words so all credit must go to that person!
Love this track.
Even If you already did this before Silver Raven is worth a repeat ANYDAY
I thought I had but this was the first time.
Hi, Leland. Wonderful contribution here and on the album to the No Other masterpiece. I saw you here in Melbourne Australia, backing James Taylor.... with Dan Dugmore, Wally Wachtel, Bill Payne, etc. Fabulous ensemble playing ... and on No Other. Many, Many thanks.
Aww. Jesse Ed! Miss him and Jim Pulte too.
I still remember the first time I heard this album in 1974. It was magical with deep spiritual meanings. I learned to sing most of the songs. One of my all time favorite albums. Thank you, Leland, for reliving your experience with Gene and the band members.
👋👋 We've been too busy to catch a good newscast for a while. Guess we must be somewhat fortunate at the moment....
Hope it cools down soon for you, Leland ♥️ 🙏
We are so used to seeing your videos regularly we get upset if we don’t get our fix daily…🧐…
Thank you Lee!!! Happy weekend ✌🏻
Thank you Lee always a pleasure
Pleased to hear that you are ok. Don’t worry if you are too busy. We understand and are ok just as long as you are OK.
Definitely in the style of the later byrds.
There may be as many, if not more, albums that should be noted as not. Most of what I listen to would not be high sellers or money makers.
The album played today is an example. Thank you too for listing who played and sang on the recordings.
Those ‘not with us’ are here with their music. Being old is a gig to play and play out well. ✌
Fantastic album. Thanks Lee. Saw Gene sing 'Silver Raven' at Hammersmith Odeon in London 1977 on the Byrds reunion tour. I was a kid writing songs and dreaming of a music career, which happened! Sir you are a legend!
Thanks for the dose.
'The Strength of Strings' is my favorite track off the album.
Your "lyrical parts" are great (along with the entire performance), they really fill in a lot of space and add atmosphere. Thanks for revisiting these tunes!
I have been thinking a bit lately about that saying ‘if a tree falls in the forrest does anyone hear it’. I just wanted to say Lee that l know that you are busy and time seems to fly by quickly. Please know that you do get missed if you get too busy but I think we all understand and just care about you. Please ‘enjoy every sandwich’ and we will always be here when you are and don’t overdo it brother. Cheers to all. 🖐👍🙏
@@hanspeterlillese2225 Very true Hans but I also remember a song written about this philosophical question and it actually was referring to caring for one another. I live with chronic pain and disability and it gets extremely difficult and sometimes overwhelmingly lonely and it has been a thought l had since watching a show on elderly people. Here in Australia they are actually getting young children into Aged Care facilities and it is working and changing lives of the elderly. The latest experiment they are doing is getting teenagers into Aged Care settings and it is interesting seeing the changes in both age groups. I find it interesting how we all interpret things and one of my carers who is 34yrs my junior would need to Google this philosophical question yet us older ones know it from life experiences and possibly old school education. Love the nitpicking title.👍
@@hanspeterlillese2225 Australia has gone downhill so much and was once an amazing country. I personally think it is the sign of the times. Tasmania is still a little old fashioned but mainland Australia is incredibly different. Some country towns are amazing. I live in Melbourne Victoria and we ended up being the longest lockdowned city in the world and and it shows. Personally I feel that they have not taken into account immigration and the fundamental needs for infrastructure. I had a heart turn in March and no ambulances were available and I have been waiting for over 18 months for urgent surgery. Everyone here has had enough and hospitals are short staffed and overwhelmed. The Australia l grew up with during the 60s has gone and it now just feels like a place to exist. Very sad but true and I think that it is the sign of the times. Interestingly the experiments with younger children going into aged care homes started here and it said that other countries were watching. Growing old isn’t easy but I am trying to stay young at heart. Shame LEGO has gotten so damn expensive!👍😎
@@hanspeterlillese2225 absolutely Hans…..I wanted to insert that very necessary phrase as well! Guess I’m a fellow nit-picker. 😏🙄😁
@@hanspeterlillese2225 did he give a clue as to why? Just curious…..
@@steven_scattergood Helene here. I am so saddened, Steven, to hear of your troubles and your pain! 😞. Waiting that long for urgent care is unconscionable. Sounds like Australia is a part broken as we are now in the US. It does I died feel like a “place to exist”. The country I grew up in in the 50’s and 60’s is gone.
Haaaaa I was just typing who was on steel....Thanks Lee!
He did a lot of work with Neil Young.
Best wishes to you as well Leland. we met briefly at Musicfest Vancouver Island a few years back. No other is a masterpiece and I don’t use that term lightly. Some misunderstand is my favourite in that and it was so nice to hear it in this setting.

Leland you did feature this album a couple of years ago. Such a great album. Im glad you did this today. Wasn't expecting to think about Gene today but always good
Yes. I talked in detail about it and played some other songs....
@@lelandsklar6363 I can never hear just one song off the album so today Ill listen in its entirety and pay more attention to the bass
@Lastname First. It surely is a great album. Bought it immediately after Lee featured it a while back and it gets a regular outing now.

Hi Ian! Did you decide to score tickets to Saving Grace for November? Just curious…..wish I could go….his co-vocalist…Suzi something…..has a lovely voice.
@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 Hi Helene, no I'm afraid not. I still haven't done much long distance travelling since my big operation last year, so travelling to see a concert and sitting (or worse standing) through one would be pretty difficult. Let's say that I now have to make special bathroom arrangements!
@@Ian-Steele Hugs to you Ian, on all the logistics and marathon of stamina. I went to a ZZ Top concert in an overwhelming set of circumstances that my friend thought wouldn't be that tricky but of course was. I'm glad I didn't miss it, because it turned out to be my last chance to experience Dusty Hill live, but I was sad that I ended up spending seven or eight songs worth of it trying to regroup in the ladies room after accidentally throwing a cuff crutch when I was backing away from the sinks and almost had made it back out the door. I managed not to fall, but then had to find the cuff and try to get the other crutch with every thing that had been mounted to it back up and cleaned off while trying to also get a person to see where the cuff part was and hand it over and then leave me alone while I washed everything up and put it back together at a wall of sinks with nothing really else to lean on. The remnants of an icy Dr. Pepper that was tied into a drum kit cup holder, had also gone down with the ergonomic right crutch. Took every muscle to not snap the left one and remain balanced, to very slowly maneuver to a cinder block abutment flanking one end of the sinks, with a paper towel dispenser mounted to its inner side. Thankfully that's where one of the metal trash containers were as well. The janitorial staff was an awesome machine of a crew. They relayed through there about four times, clearing everything mopping and reinstalling new rungs of paper towels and everything each time. Hundreds of people were coming in through one door and exited out the opposite end of the whole curved, tunnel like room. I was also wearing a giant backpack, with other emergency kit in it, for dealing with a central line. Thank goodness I didn't have to take that off in that area, because I would not have had the strength to get it back on. In the front of the left strap, was a zippered pocket with a clean hefty lawn & leaf bag. I ended up taking that out, and just sheathing the entire right crutch with everything on it, tying a knot around the bottom of it and snapping the cuff back on top. Another song played going up the steep ramp, and two more while I circled back, counting the deltas of stair protrusions to the one I had carefully descended backwards on my way to the ladies room. I was too exhausted to ascend the stairs again, and didn't want to block a bunch of peoples view for what would probably be only three more songs. So I tried to find a blank piece of wall to lean my butt against while leaning forward at the waist to accommodate the backpack. I was also wearing a short ski type coat and a Great ZZ Top teeshirt, that I had pulled on over the other teeshirt I'd been wearing. We were outside standing a long time before the doors opened. Like an hour and a half. I had limited my fluids so that I wouldn't have to go to the bathroom, in the middle of the concert, but during the opening band which were good, and also on for a long time, my friend kept carrying a bunch of drinks up, pushing them at me. I drank one, simply so it wouldn't spill and fastened the other one to the cup holder of the crutch to get up and down to let other people in and out of the row that was really 29 stairs up instead of 7, like my buddy thought. I had descended the stairs after waiting it out as long as I could, without spilling anything, only to crash and burn, on my way out, of the ladies room. I needed "three more steps, just gimmee three steps" to have gotten out of the slippery tile and back on the path to the live open house while ZZ was up!
Great video.
😎 hoping you get well deserved time to rest after the Lyle tour 🌻
Leland is a work-horse and I write this in the most complimentary way having worked with and love horses. ✌
I went out w Gene a few times. What I remember about him the most was his sense of humor and what a nice guy he was. I love his music particularly The True One but its hard for me to listen to this day. "What's been flying high must always touch the ground. His death is still heartbreaking. Didn't know until today Leland that you or Jesse played on the album. Such a great album but painful for me to hear even after all these years. So many years ago I knew him.
