Gene Clark: Top 10 Songs (x2)

  • Gene Clark was an artist like ... NO OTHER.
After leaving the Byrds, he had one of the great (mostly unknown) solo careers of any artist. Starting with his 1967 proto-country, baroque self-titled all the way until his team up with Carla Olsen of the Textones on So Rebellious A Lover. In between he tried folk country (White Light), cosmic American (No Other), folk rock (Roadmaster), country rock (Two Sides to Every Story) and even dabbled in 80s country (Firebyrd).
What didn't change was his dedication to fine songwriting, which made choosing a mere 10 songs quite the challenge.
Wildly underappreciated during his lifetime, Clark's status as one of the great 70s singer-songwriters and originators of country rock has soared in recent years as his works are reevaluated by a new generation of wiser, more tasteful music aficionados.
Here, Jason and Joe winnow his discography down to just 10 tunes. The big question being, what percentage of No Other songs will Joe select? How will Gene newcomer Jason's list look compared to the (comparatively) experienced Gene fan Joe?
Watch the video and then leave your top 10 lists in the comments.
Check out these songs on our Spotify Playlist: open.spotify.com/playlist/4hB...
    Thanks for watching!

In interviews, Chris Hillman and David Crosby always tried to portray Clark as some kind of uneducated bumpkin, but he must have read at least a little poetry along the way. The kind of lyrics he wrote don't just come out of nowhere.

I can't stop listening to No Other and Roadmaster and I am thrilled to dig into every single song and album. Epic, heartbreaking, inspiring, cosmic American music. Glorious. Many thanks to Joe for his really spotlighting Gene Clark. I really started getting into the Byrds after your channel had the Byrds week, and I've just starting listening to Gene Clark this week and I'm really enjoying his sound. As I have many albums to listen to yet, no ranking today, but my early favorite song is Give My Love to Marie. This is why this channel rules!

That's written by James Talley, but we'll let that pass, as Gene's interpretation of it is unbeatable, to my mind. If ever a guy could truly inhabit a song, it was Gene.

Gene's cover of If You Could Read My Mind is quite good. The original by Gordon Lightfoot is one of my favorite songs from the early 70's & one of the first 45's I purchased as a kid so the song resonates with me & Gene did it justice.

    • @NaughtyVampireGod
      @NaughtyVampireGod Před 2 lety +3

Yeah. the original is a classic. My #9 song of 1970. Gordon Lightfoot from 1970-1976 was amazing. Gene's version was true to the original - just a little more up tempo.

My favorite tune by Gene clark is some misunderstanding.
From of course my favorite gene clark album.
First heard no other when I was like 11-12 when my dad brought it home and we sat on the floor next to the stereo and he was absolutely raving about it.
I guess being so young I did not really understand why he thought it was fantastic.

"Set You Free This Time" from Turn! Turn! Turn! has always been a strong favorite of mine. It's really kind of a shame the way Gene was treated in The Byrds (a band I will always love regardless). With his unparalleled songwriting and his great voice he should have been the lead vocalist, but petty band politics played a rather unfortunate role, that also affected Gene's life.

Best Gene song is the live performance of On The Run, over on Bob Seger 's channel.
Too many, much loved over many years, and how to put them in order?? Well here's a few to go on with.
She don't care about time, b side version
Here without you, may be a full Byrds track but Gene wrote it, and it's the one that first took my attention.
    Set you free this time.
    With tomorrow.
    Spanish guitar.
    The true one.
    Strength of strings.
    From a silver phial.
Why not your baby, Lisa Miller's version on that Australian tribute album from 2002 or thenabouts.
    Rain song.
    For no one.
In a misty morning, three quarters gorgeous, final quarter not quite as good.. (takes cover) but as I understand it, Gene didn't have the final say on how those tracks were published anyway, so..
    Hear the wind.
    Past addresses.
One in a hundred, White Light version. So joyful!
See what I mean about too many to choose from?
But I can't sign off without mentioning Lady of the North, which he obviously wrote for me, as I was born in Yorkshire. (😂😂😂) no seriously it is simply glorious.

Also, there are definitely some Dillard & Clark tunes that would make mine, but you guys didn't include those two records for consideration. But my God, check out Gene's vocals on "Polly." That's why he's one of my favorite vocalists. Also, it sounds like Joe already knows, but No Other has been released in a Deluxe Edition box set that is especially nice on vinyl. I don't have the set, but I do have a really good vinyl copy of the album. Do you guys watch Norman Maslov's channel? He is one of my favorite channels. Couple of good obscurities worth hunting down: If you like 'Echoes' there’s a similar baroque-pop 'Back Street Mirror' actor David Hemmings first released it but they found Gene's vocal track for 'The Lost Studio Sessions'. 'Washington Square' from the 'Under The Silvery Moon' compilation has a kinda dated 80s synth sound but its great lyrics and 'Your Fire Burning' from the Gene & Carla Olson live 'Silhouetted In Light' is Gene's last great song.

I saw Gene along with Micharl Clarke in his controversial "Celebration of The Byrds" tour in Philadelphia in 1985. Also in the band was Skip Battin, Rick Roberts, Rick Danko and several others I don't recall. His voice was a little hoarse, but he performed very well. Poor Mike Clarke had a plaster cast on his leg, but he was able to play drums. I said "controversial" because, I believe McGuinn, Hillman and Crosby sued him to stop.

Joe or Jason, not sure if either of you has heard these records, but I'm thinking y'all would like them and I highly recommend:
    - Stephen Still's Manassas (featuring as members with Stills, Chris Hillman, Al Perkins, Paul Harris, Dallas Taylor, Joe Lala, and many more "non-member" additional top notch musicians). They put out two albums (a double LP in 1972, and single LP in 1973)
    - McGuinn, Clark and Hillman - s/t release in 1979 I think)
    Great records.

1.Polly. Yes, I am counting a Dillard and Clark tune. Soaring melancholy. First heard it covered by The Walkabouts on their 1993 album Satisfied Mind.
    2. With Tomorrow
    3. Silver Raven
    4. Life's Greatest Fool
    5. For A Spanish Guitar
    6. Strength Of Strings
    7. From a Silver Phial
    8. Tried So Hard. Another tune I first heard as a cover, from Yo La Tengo's 1990 album Fakebook.
    9. Full Circle Song
    10. Some Misunderstanding

I prefer the Walkabouts version of Polly (not so sugar coated as the original) but I give him credit for the writing.
The Robert Plant/Alison Krauss version is also worth mentioning - another proof that the song is great.
(PS - you list With Tomorrow twice)

(Honourable Mentions: Echoes, With Tomorrow, Life’s Greatest Fool, Rain Song)
    10. Tears of Rage
    9. Give My Love to Marie
    8. Shooting Star
    7. Lady of the North
    6. She Don’t Care About Time
    5. In A Misty Morning
    4. Silver Raven [Probably my favourite vocal perfomance from him.]
    3. For A Spanish Guitar [This is what I thought Bob Dylan's music would sound like. It kinda does, but Dylan's songs I know are way worse than this one.]
    2. Some Misunderstanding [A Country Version of Pink Floyd.]
    1. No Other [Mindblowing song. Probably the correct choice for SOTY 1974.]
Songs I share with Jason: (1) In A Misty Morning
Songs I share with Joe: (4) Lady of the North, In A Misty Morning, For A Spanish Guitar, No Other
