Stan Edgar was modeled after the actual 'James' Stillwell from the comics. It was Stillwell who was always cold, calm, mildly irritated by Homelander, and always knew how to put him in his place.
Stan Edgar took Stillwell's behavior and relation with HL but there was also Madelyn who took the name

This is probably one of the reasons why Homelander wanted Stan out of the company. He's cold and unbothered by Homelander's presence and I think Homelander is intimidated at how "powerless" he can be in front of Stan.
