A theory from Reddit:
That was Dan Harmons cat drawn into the show. He had memories of our physical world of Dan and humans so when Rick and Jerry saw the mind scan they were so mind blown that it was sickening their reality was a cartoon. That is why Jerry said someone needs to know and Rick almost attempts suicide and did not kill the cat also why the cat said just have fun don’t look into it and why he admitted to being from outer space (our world) jerry referring to his parents photo is him objecting the fact he was born and not some drawn character in a cartoon hence the sound of babies marching noises etc. being noises of our world.

Everyone brings up that Rick was genuinely revolted by what he saw, but i'd like to point out that the forcefield box made the Whole box, floor included.
There are way too many scenarios where they completely skip the floor, so whomever is imprisoned can just dig their way out.
You’ll find a lot of theories about what they saw and why Rick didn’t kill the cat, but one of the main writers came out and explained all of this. He said it’s exactly how the cat says it, “you’re overthinking it, the point of a talking cat is to have fun”. It was just a little fun gimmick with no real meaning behind it and they knew fans would over analyze it 😂
On a side note, my favorite theory was that the cat is the viewer of the show’s cat and when they looked into his mind they see the cat watching the show and realized how their reality is a cartoon and they see the creators making all the different scenes in the show and causing hardship for our viewing pleasure. Although profound and disturbing, nothing harmful done by the cat, hence not killing him and just wanting nothing to do with him. But then again, Rick had broken the 4th wall on a couple of occasions at this point in the show so that wouldn’t quite make the most amount of sense.
Producers: "you fans over-analyze everything so much, lol*
Also producers: " Here's this NORMAL cat with NORMAL physique and INSIGNIFICANT reasons as to why he can talk just have fun NEVER EVER ASK WHY THE CAT CAN TALK IT'S A NORMAL CAT COMPLETELY BASIC FELINE THAT CAN TALK AND DON'T ASK WHY-"
I mean, come on.
Rick may "know" that he's fiction to some other world or entity.
It's something else entirely to be forced to directly confront this truth, or it you.
Imagine seeing the work done to "set the stage" for that exact moment he's looking.
This is the entire basis for eldritch horror.
...There's a shitty movie called A Talking Cat. The whole episode is just a parody of it. The punchline is that the movie implies at the end that the cat is like an alien or something, but never bothers to explain what. While the Talking Cat was intended to be a mouthpiece for the writers of the show to explain that “Not everything needs to be over analyzed” I personally think the Cat is a physical representation of both Fear of the Unknown, and Murphy’s Law.
Us not knowing exactly, yet being given a glimpse via audio, the potential cosmically horrifying events that lead up to the Cat being able to talk, its horrifying to think about, and to witness it is apparently even worse.
And since we know the reason the Cat can talk is awful, and disgustingly horrifying, everything that could have been bad to lead up to it being able to talk, had happened or maybe even will happen at some point.

@@OrsonfoeYes the council of Rick’s not Rick C-137 himself.
There are multiple times Rick tried to protect Jerry, like pissmaster and the fortune cookies
So, my theory is - after what the Cats been through and seen, it's probably deeply traumatized and heavily repressive, thats why it doesn't want to think about it, talk about it, or be asked about it, yet everyone every single time it talks to people - someone asks it the one question that brings up its traumatic past.
Cat needs a therapist or a memory wipe itself.
Rick and Jerry's response to learning the Cat's memories is only a symptom of our current societal organization, and likely a symptom of Rick's apathy towards mental health in general as seen in the episode where Rick turns himself into a pickle.

@@filthycasual2567 well now you actually made me go and check, and turns out you're exactly right! :D after the motor of ricks spaceship car sputters, they talk about it. The transcript goes as follows:
Oh, boy. W-what's wrong, Rick? Is it the quantum carburetor or something? "Quantum carburetor"? Jesus, Morty. You can't just add a [burps]-- Sci-Fi word to a car word and hope it means something. Huh, looks like something's wrong with the microverse battery. We're gonna have to go inside. Um, go inside what? The battery, Morty. Be right back, Summer.
Looking thru the transcript im also realizing they definetly do the whole add a sci-fi word to another word a bunch more times during the episode. thinking back i also didnt really notice how much the episode is sorta about cars, with it nonetheless not beeing the main focus of the story.
Theres obviously the main plot of the episode with the car battery breaking down and rick and morty going in. But then theres also the b plot between Summer and the Car beefing and the car going absolutely apeshit, (on a sidenote, the "psychological option detected" from the car and the fake hunter with the whole "daddy?" They really were just playing the theorists with this one. No matter what is revealed as the reason, it wouldn't be satisfying to the viewers. The cat wasn't just trying to get Jerry and Rick to let their curiosity go and enjoy the ride, it was telling the viewers that not all mysteries of the show have to be answered. A question without an answer is disappointing, but no where near as bad as a bad answer to a nagging question.
Deep
For real. A lot of people thought it was something evil like sexual crimes, but Rick would have just killed him. It was supposed to be something staggeringly terrible but which also would make Rick not want to kill him. I played around with a bunch of ideas and it's unsolvable. They're just fucking with us.
It would have to be something so terrible, that RICK SANCHEZ, the one who was dtf a planetary hive mind, who assimilated a giraffe specifically for him to f, and not only did he throw up and nearly kill himself, he tried to protect Jerry from it. The same Jerry he straight up hates the very existence of, and Rick made an honest effort to protect him from the truth.
But it also had to be something Rick wouldn't just kill him over, which makes it even more complicated. What would Rick find absolutely abhorrent, but wouldn't kill someone over. The same Rick that killed a man for touching him, or Sawed the avenger ripoffs because he wanted them to appr Nubnub. No possible answer would be acceptable in my eyes, and its better that they never give a direct answer to it, elsethe vast majority of the community revolt.
@@MrMathman13 it would also have to take into account that the cat is ashamed of it. Something evil wouldn't be ashamed,
That actually makes more sense than my theory that the Cat initially had to many Questions and in order to recieve the answers to all the questions he did something insanely terrible that gave him the ability to talk as well as give him way to many of the answers he was looking for, or worse yet; the cat found all the answers to all the question he asked even though they were far to many from the beginning anyway.
You know it's bad when even Rick Sanchez is horrified by it.
One of the few times that Rick did something out of care for Jerry. As much as he dislikes him, he didn’t want Jerry to be left scarred.

No answer is satisfying for Rick besides the absolute truth that explains everything
you know its serious when even rick is horrified
This is one of those scenes that are both fascinating, and at the same time, frustrating. The fact that this cat's mind horrified Rick, a man who has "seen things" is just fascinating. The endless possibilities that could be contained in that cat's mind is mind-blowing. But at the same time, it's so frustrating, because we know we'll never know for sure what's in there, because knowing will ruin the fun.
Some knowledge is to dangerous to be chased after.
shrodingers cat mind
Its heavily implied that what he saw involved sexual acts with babies and jerry's parents. That the cat would weasel its way into homes and "have fun" the same way the dragon did in that episode.
And the cat has a dick on it's face too.
I think the sounds of violence and terror relate to other sexual proclivities of the cat. That involve inflicting violence and gore.
At the end of the day for all of Rick's bad character traits, he's not a sadist, he doesn't revel in pointless murder and especially not the defenseless.
While he'll do horrifying things its for practical logical reasons (the contained worlds and civilizations that power his car, while seemingly cruel don't actually cause pain to those contained and he doesn't revel in the situation)
He's often shown to be disgusted by those who engage in murder and violence for nothing but the sake of it and against those weaker then them (part of why he never just offs Jerry is because it would be so cosmically unfair in the balance of power for him to ever feel good about it)
