Love this method of changing/flushing brake fluid. I used to be hesitant to change my fluid because of all the monkey motion required to bleed them afterwards. Using your method is sooooo much easier, doesn't introduce air, and ensures all of the old fluid is 100% flushed out. Great stuff. Thanks as always.

Del, you were my inspiration to start working on and fixing my Suzuki bandit, and to work on motorcycles in general, five or six years ago. You demystified the processes of actually taking your bike apart and putting it back together, and gave me a great deal of confidence to start my journey as a hobby mechanic.

Del,I never knew about the vice grips for bleeding the back brakes. I tape a broomstick to the brake pedal and reached over seat to pump the pedal. From now on I'm using vice grips. Ride Safely and praying 🙏 Penny is getting better.

Way to work Del! Funny, I bleed my brakes the exact same way, even tie wrap it overnight and everything, gee, wonder who I learned that from haha. There is more than one way to skin a cat but anytime I perform a task learnt from Del, it always works and is most likely a more efficient way. The Lathe machine will be my next purchase, "need a tool, build a tool". Man, that is a lot of tedious work, putting all those rivets in but pretty cool, never seen a GW murdered out like that. Sure, maybe not your most difficult job but all tasks, large or small should be treated with top workmanship in mind and you excel at that. 🍻

Fantastic as always. Never seen this type of braking system before. You learn something new every day. Clever idea with the mole grips and zip tie on the brake lever. Was just looking at a GL 1200 goldwing from 85 yesterday in Sweden. Mint condition and under £2000 in english. Sorely tempted I must admit. 🇬🇧🇸🇪👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊
That's a bargain, id buy that for that money, you could have fun riding it for a year and sell it for your money back at the end of it.. Old Goldwings are always a good investment.!

Hi Del great video as always liked the vicegrip idea new to me. I ride the same wing 98 model . I upgraded to braided hosing years so everything is good also replace fluid tegularly.
However when bike is not used month or longer the brake pedal goes soft l mean all the way down. I replaced rear master cylinder seals some years but made little difference.
If l bleed sorts it Also keep pumping pedal improves then after hour riding almost back to normal. I dont have any issues front brake.

Hi Eddie, those symptoms sound distinctly like the master cylinder is allowing fluid to pass the seals... but as you replaced them, then further to that you could simply have air trapped in the system, remember your rear master cylinder also feeds the FRONT LEFT caliper.. so the air could be trapped in that line, give them both a bleed through and see if that helps! good luck with it and keep safe. !

@@larryritchey8557 Most welcome Sir, I'm sure you already know, but just in case you don't, the rear brakes involves the rear brake caliper and the front left caliper on the GL1500, both operated by the pedal... bleed the rear first and then the front for the best results!

Hey buddy, great to hear from you. i think all the modern gadgets are very good, they all work in their own way and make life easy for the novice...but my old man showed me how to bleed brakes when i was 10 years old, just a tube and a spanner.... no fancy equipment, and to me it's as easy and walking.. so i personally feel no need to buy those items to make a job easy that for me, already is.!

Hello Del, could I ask how do you know when you have bled all the old fluid out of the system the other side of the reservoir? thanks.
The fluid coming out of the hose on the caliper will change color. It's why clear hose is useful for this job.
Thanks Del ! I like your idea of using Vice Grip for bleeding brakes ! My 1992 GW doesn't seem to be a solid brake on the rear pedal unless I use something heavy to hold the rear pedal down over night! Any suggestions ? Thank you foe ALL your how to videos !!
Hi Gene, I have found the best results from reverse purging the rear brake system, which as you know is the front left caliper at the same time... the rear pedal does both... so to pump the fluid from the front caliper back to the rear master cylinder, then do the same with the rear, you'll get a lot better results... but it is tricky unless you lift the whole rear tail up... Otherwise, how old is your fluid? It's a horizontal system so air doesn't naturally float up to the resevoir, give it a bleed through and see if you can improve it... but I do the pedal trick too, just tie it down to the main stand overnight now and again, works a treat!

I've bought some in the past, they've turned up damaged, you send them back, then the second set turn up damaged and you just despair, which is probably why I like to make my own parts if I can! Thanks buddy.. i removed the seat instinctively intending to drop the left pannier box off, as you do when changing brake pads, then i remembered the internal access hole as it was just a fluid change!

Hello again Del, slightly off topic but what do you rate as the ultimate touring bike ?
My thoughts are;
Fast touring, BMW K1600 GTL
Slow touring, HD Road King
All round do it all, Honda Gold Wing
When I lived in GB, none of the above riders gave me, a Triumph rider the nod. So, I'd most likely go for a Yamaha FJR 1300. I hope others comment too, as there is no wrong road bike to tour, from a Honda cub to a Triumph Rocket 3.
I think you hit the nail on the head Russ, "there is no wrong road bike to tour", and i don't think there is such a thing as "The Ultimate touring bike" ! for any choice to be 'ultimate' it would need to be better than all the others at everything, and im sure you'll agree that not possible. Also touring varies too, bad weather motorway miles, VS country lanes sunshine miles, both very different kinds of touring aye.! the FJR is a very competent all rounder thats unanimously agreed, but pillion comfort for hundreds of miles, the Goldwing beats them all.. if you're long distance commuting from London to Manchester every day.. then the BMW all the way.. and for if you wanna do it in style,? then naturally the Harley.! Just my 2p's worth.

Wish I had watched this 4 hrs ago. I didn't know about the access hole through the left case. I took it off...AND no go on brake bleed...I get to do the dreaded master rebuild. I've done it before and can hardly wait to do it again...

The Honda GL1500… something I’ve always considered to be a big lump of shit that did nothing but appease an old man’s need to continue riding, and one that I now consider to be a kick arse feat of engineering, ingenuity and - dare I say it - grace. Good work as usual Del! Missed you mate.
ha ha thanks mate, a common misconception with Goldwings, there's no getting away from it, they very much match the genre you described, but when you ride one they are actually a hilarious bungalow to throw around, and if you're not worried too much about how it looks and don't waste too much time doing the cosmetic housework, they're actually very easy to maintain mechanically!... And of course Honda reliability as ever...

Are you telling the front brake lever just use the right front disc, and the left front disc instead is used when you brake with the rear?
