I love the idea of these shorter news bytes, but if the DF team is listening I have a small suggestion:
Would it be possible to mention the date of whichever mainline video the clips were taken from (if relevant)?
For instance, I watched this clip for a few moments before realizing I had seen it before in a recent DFDirect. A quick flash of text before the clip starts, something along the lines of ‘Taken from DFDirect #120’ or ‘Previously recorded in “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PS5- The Digital Foundry Tech Review”’ etc. would be a godsend.

Of course I'll buy one if it doesn't have backwards compatibility, because I'm a sucker for Nintendo games... However, I'll be buying many less games than I did on this last round. I've re-bought Nintendo games over and over and over for the last few decades, to the point where if I had an accurate list, I'd probably have ten licenses for some of my favorite games. (assuming they carried over somehow) I'm getting increasingly less apt to re-buy once the remakes and remasters hit a certain level of quality and quality of life. I want to have a "complete library" of my favorite Nintendo games on one device, and the Switch seemed like the platform that would finally make that happen more or less. (short of the remakes of Twilight Princess and Wind Waker so far) If they dash that with Switch 2, I'll probably buy one, then only buy the few unique games in the series I like, and call it good. They will also basically be losing out on me spending any money on third party or indies, etc. as I'll just go back to Steam for that. Technical challenges or no, they should definitely figure it out, and make it available.

3:41 in the Nvidia hack, the NVN2 API said T239 has 1536 active cuda cores, so that is the correct number. There is also clocks located in the hack for a DLSS test with 660MHz, 1.125GHz and 1.38GHz clocks, the last one being a stress test, similar to the Switch's 921MHz GPU clock that is never used. This would give us 2TFLOPs portable and 3.456TFLOPs docked.

    • @Dan-uh9sg
      @Dan-uh9sg Před 11 měsíci +1

I really hope it does have DLSS. If it is Ampere based, that means DLSS 2. Obv no frame generation since it wouldn’t support DLSS 3, but DLSS 2 would give some nice headroom for games to look decent and perform well. If it’s supported in handheld mode, we could even get pretty good battery life and performance if games target a 480p or less internal resolution on a 720p display.
At the very least, it would be nice to have games using DLSS 2 instead of old versions of FSR.

I think backwards compatibility is really essential for Super Switch. That backwards compatibility also makes the transition between platforms so much easier for developers who are only *now* building Switch games. I do acknowledge the difficulty, but there are just too many upsides. Not to mention that I think players will expect the existing Nintendo Switch Online library to automatically carry over to the Super Switch.

Be real. The Switch is a hybrid home/portable console, and it's pretty much the last phase of the years Nintendo spent restructuring its development strategy. Rather than split their developers between two consoles, one home and one portable, they decided it was more efficient and cost-effective to have all their developers working on one console, which is the Switch. It can be a home console. It can be a portable console. That's why Nintendo named it "Switch". So, for you to say that it's not also a home console is basically you telling Nintendo that they named it wrong.

  • @anonwalkerr

I'd argue the switch being portable allows it to compete for time even less. Not only can you take the thing with you everywhere conveniently but you can use it while others use the tv. Most people don't have a dedicated home setup so I'd argue that nintendo aren't competing heavily even in the time aspect.

I don't know how no one mentioned this : VR!!!
The Switch will switch to VR as the 4th Way to play it.
Docked, Handheld, Tabletop and VR. And modern VR has been a thing for more than 10 years know, which is enough of maturity for Nintendo to adopt it.
Not to mention their little Labo experiment.
The real question is, will it be a seperate accessory or will it come packaged?
If they can somehow have it packaged in the box for 300 to 400 USD, then DAMN. That will give Oculus some SERIOUS competition. (Yeah I know it's Meta now)
The only way I can see it be packaged in, is if the DOCK itself was the headset. Not impossible, but the ergonomics of face, and stability of dock will be tough to manage.
Maybe a small sitting dock the way Oculus has for charging the Quest Pro combined with the VR dock and finally the Switch and it;s 6DoF Joycons ( which already had an IR camera if you guys don't remember).
    Toodles.
The only way if this doesn't happen is because Nintendo does things Nintendo does.
With Switch, my prediction when we heard rumors of NX was that they will use the SAME ARM chipset on both the handheld and the home console, but clocked DIFFERENTLY.
This way they won't have to code it twice, just increase and decrease the res(GPU load) and draw distance (CPU+RAM load)
    Not that far off, really.
But would have NEVER EVER guessed the Joycons. That's how they packed TWO consoles into one. And made the ONLY portable local multiplayer device (Steamdeck with 1 or 2 Xbox controllers don't count, too bulky, I don't even carry my ProCon when travelling with the Switch and a mini third party dock).

These Switch 2 fakes that are starting to come out remind me of the days when the Wii was on the horizon. There was one fake that was claiming the "Revolution", as it was known at the time, was a VR headset that would change gaming forever.
...and then we got some waggle remotes. Mmmm so revolutionary, so exciting. The lesson there was that reality tends to be much more subtle than our wild imaginations, and the Switch U will probably not be some crazy insane new thing. We'll get one or two small gimmicks, better graphics, and that's about it.

If the Switch 2 uses Orin 32 40W as base(which is the T234 with 2 SM disabled), that means the GPU will only be as strong as the Xbox One and the Steam Deck(PS4 in docked mode), even going from Samsung's 8nm to TSMC's N4, the 15W TDP won't let it reach much higher.
    3:08
The full Orin 64 at 60W(seen on the screenshot/T234) is almost as strong as the PS4 Pro, they would need to use TSCM's N3 to get close to that same performance at 25W, but since there are already Dev Kits being shipped, it means they're using N4 or 5nm, which would make it a 32W/35W SoC, which is way too hard to cool in a Switch form factor, even in docked mode.
The chip also only has a 128bit-bus, which means 8GB or 16GB of LPDDR5, and we all know Nintendo won't give it 16GB of RAM.
I don't know how different the T239 is to the T234, so i can't make that many assumptions, but i'm now sure that the Switch 2 won't be even close to a next gen console, even with the strong CPU and access to DLSS2.
Current Gen games would have to run at 360p Low settings to match the Series S at 720p High settings and the PS5/XSX at 1440p Ultra

If you know Nintendo's history, you know that's not true. Nintendo can have a hit one generation, then try something that falls flat the next generation. For example, people thought Nintendo was unstoppable with the Wii, then Nintendo followed up that success with the Wii U. Nintendo likes to try new things, and you just never know how it'll go. Now, does that mean that I think Nintendo is stupid enough to move away from the Switch design? Absolutely not. I think they'll stick with it for the time being. The real question is what they're planning in terms of evolving that design and whether those changes will go over well with their audience.

They bring new ideas and fresh experiences all the time to ensure people have fun. Something that the competition doesn't do. I feel as if nintendo doesn't get the respect for paving the way for others by them being experimental. Instead the get criticized for it, which is pretty obtuse of many people. If it wasn't for nintendo, a lot of your favorite systems that you think is better wouldn't be here it is want for nintendo🤣. So before anyone tells their crap, do some Google research on nintendo. Game boy Advance can run Game boy games with adapter
DS can run gameboy and Game boy Advance games
      3DS can run DS games
Gamecube can run Gameboy and Gameboy advance games with adapter
      Wii can run Gamecube games
Wii U can run Wii games
The only non-backwards compatible systems are the
Switch (no room to fit discs, and dual screens for DS/3DS, technically first hybrid system)
      N64
      SNES
      NES (first home system)
      Game boy (first handheld system)
      Game and watch (no cartridges)
      Micro vs (no cartridges)
      Virtual boy (first VR system)
Excluding first systems and systems without cartridges, only the N64 and SNES have no backwards compatibility, but they both required another slot and ran on completely different hardware than their previous systems. Playstation and Xbox for the last few generations ran on the same type of hardware x86 and they just iterate, so backwards compatibility is much easier, even the PS Vita doesn't run x86 hardware. Only recently the Steam Deck was made with x86 hardware and that was almost 5 years after the Switch.

It's actually a myth that people get mad when a console isn't backward compatible. People have said that for decades, and it's never been the case. The reason consoles fail doesn't include "lack of backward compatibility". It's really not the selling point that people hype it up to be. Is it inconvenient? Yeah, but just keep your old console, and you have nothing to worry about.
Also, no one who is interested in GTA6 is thinking about backward compatibility on the Switch 2. Those are two completely different markets. If you're interested in GTA6, then you're going to buy GTA6. If you're interested in Switch 2, then you're going to buy a Switch 2. Interest in one will not affect whether you'll buy the other.

Backward compatibility is nearly required at this point. Nintendo can either include an X1 chip in the new system, or have it integrated on the new device's SOC/APU. If it's a dock able handheld gaming device that NOT compatible, I think Nintendo will have a MUCH harder time with this generation... like a Wii U harder time. I think DLSS will be a HUGE selling point if it's back compat.... upscale all your old Switch games to 4K 60... and also play these next generation games too! That's the winning approach.

The Steam Deck, I don't think, is a competitor to the Nintendo system, whatever they call it. Not because to tech savvy people it isn't an obvious comparison, but just because the Switch 2 or whatever it is will get mainstream attention with advertising and it runs Nintendo games. PC, despite logically having way more options, is just more niche in the grand scheme of things and Steam Deck has found a nice middle ground but its still not mainstream to the extent that a "real" console is. Its sales are impressive for a first gen concept but its not pulling Nintendo numbers and Nintendo isn't even going to consider it in its strategy, for good and bad.

Love small clip videos. As for Nintendo backwords compa, if it’s on simulator hardware. As in ARM cpu and Nvidia gpu. Then YES Nintendo can totally do backwards compatible. I want be able play tears of of the kingdom at 1080/ 60 fps either mobile or on my tv.
However if Nintendo is stupid and goes to say AMD Soc (x86) then backwards compatible would have more issues but we know it can be done. Cus steam deck has been doing this, but would Nintendo make the software for emu of older switch games on next gen hardware? Prob not. Consider there still a lot older Zelda games we still can’t play on the switch. Where Link to past, where Zelda twilight princesses or N64 Zelda ocarina of time?
Imo I still wish Nintendo would go back hardware in box. But make so we can plug switch into hardware in box. So we can switch for mobile. But still have full 1080/60 at home on big screen! Both system still running arm cpu/Nvidia gpu. Just box one be more powerful. When you want go mobile. You pull switch out and play mobile on just less powerful hardware. Nintendo could do this. They have $$$ too pull this off. But will they?

It may sound weird but I don’t worry about backwards compatibility, not as much as I do not having an OLED screen variant at launch. Unlike a cumbersome set-top-box in the past where it would take up space and would require disk or cartridge switching, instead you have a 512gb or 1TB SD card in a Switch. It’s unlikely you’d buy a lot of games for it again. You take out the Switch, it turns on, has a screen, select from dozens of games on the fly and you can use it anywhere. You get a lot of mileage out of it. I don’t feel slighted needing a new machine to play new games that are optimized for a new portable, but then again they did _compel_ us to buy several OLED models in recent history. Which is why downgrading to their poor standards when it comes to their LCD screens is _extremely_ problematic, for me.
Nintendo has _compelled_ us to get these other models for a couple years now, only to tell us to _start over_ and exclaim that, _it’s the cost_ and we must bare with them! This is why you hire women on staff for top brass, to avoid the decisions that knee-cap Nintendo every other generation. Backwards compatibility may not be an issue for a portable machine that can completely lack entirely optional _cartridge switching_ in most cases, that is also still pretty fresh in your closet, but not having OLED after so many whole console purchases would be a slap in the face. Someone at IGN said to make sure that this new Nintendo handheld has an “OLED option” at launch. As I say this, I can feel that Nintendo imagines they know what’s best for us, when their oldest leader, in his old age _chased away_ their closest allies, who would make games for them, _reluctantly_ to this era.
They put guardians into Breath of the Wild! 10 out of 10!
Nintendo does not know what they’re doing.
It’s as if hubris causes them to be born yesterday, over an over. I sat out on a Switch _because_ it was ugly as sin, especially in comparison to my Apple devices. I didn’t consider any version of a Switch _until_ the OLED model dropped. Nintendo would have made their goal of surpassing the PS2 in terms of sales if they were not _so easily_ blind sided by the Steam Deck. Who is to say that Valve wouldn’t capitalize on Nintendo’s typical abuses and arrogance and release a Steam Deck OLED model? Nintendo suffers from navel gazing and tunnel vision.
_Don’t you dare, compel me to buy multiple OLED’s_ (which I honestly haven’t done) and then tell me to suffer another cheap and ugly LCD screen _for the sake of your hubris and incompetence!_ Again. I kiss no ring. Nintendo and all it’s business psychosis can kiss my a$$, if they make us suffer several _expensive_ OLED purchases, in a row, and then follow up with an cheap looking LCD model for their follow up machine. I know they thought guardians were funny, I know they think having us start over is _also funny._ I think I’d buy a Steamdeck…. Finally. My favorite games on the Switch were the Besthesda games, anyway. And I know they know that fact too, they told me so with their end of the year report…
    OLED Switch 2, _or nothing._
    Great Stuff.
