There’s no way they sell this for less than $350. That’s the price of the Switch OLED, which is the best selling Switch variant now - the demand at that price point is clearly there.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they launch at $400, but equally Nintendo is relatively careful on pricing, so $350 with a price drop for the old machines, and a $400 OLED down the line, would make a tonne of sense.
One thing is for sure - they’ll be selling this thing at a profit.

It won't be $299. Before even getting into specs, inflation alone means Nintendo would be getting less actual money per unit than they did from the Switch back in 2017. Also, the Switch 2 at $299 would require Nintendo to reduce the prices for the entire existing Switch line, I don't see Nintendo leaving money on the table like that. A higher price point gives them more options to manage the transition.

I think Steam Deck has a different set of priorities than the Switch and Switch 2. With the launch of the 3DS and Switch, we did see a reduced priority on battery life and to a less extent, heat. While newer models ran cooler and had somewhat better battery life, I wouldn't expect them to blaze new territory. So you have to ask yourself 'what are Nintendo's priorities for it if not that?' I'd guess getting those newer technologies, particularly DLSS, on a portable device, to allow for better visual upscaling while playing in docked. This would be one way for Nintendo to prioritize game development for handheld mode, keeping development costs down in order to maximize profits.

Because the same parts needed for Switch (Primarily the chipset) have got substantially cheaper over the last seven years, gradually increasing hardware profits per unit sold. As many have said before, Nintendo does not really compete in power, and considering that game development is almost physically unable to squeeze the power out of the most powerful consoles (at least not in a way that is healthy for anyone), extra power at this point might just be a waste.

    • @wausjackbauer128
      @wausjackbauer128 Před 2 měsíci +1

They don't compete in power because for 3 generations they've had a "gimmick" in their console which sorta costs more to produce.
And they intentionally price their consoles as low as possible to be appealing to parents. It's pretty amazing what power they've squeezed out of their last 3 consoles.

I dont think nintendo will care a lot to compete with the steam deck, im sure they will go like $100 more expensive than the competition without giving it much thought. Nintendo has not been about the specs since the gamecube era, nintendo's brand is their games.
They have constructed a similar scheme to apple's in the sense that their customer base is tied to their games (as apple usually mean expensive but usually above average quality products). Nintendo usually makes some of the most polished games on the market and never let them off their own environent. Sony and microsoft cant keep up with nintendo's first party game output, so nintendo will always be the "second console" in the sense that you buy a PC, xbox or PS for some first party and most third parties and also a nintendo console to experience most of everything, so to me, i feel the steam deck is more of a competitor to xbox and PS than to nintendo. They could only compete if they shared games, but Nintendo fans buy nintendo for their games, for everything else i have my PC

Switch 2 will likely exceed Steam Deck, but it will definitely not be a 300$ device, more like 350-400$ as Nintendo doesn't want to sell at a loss.
The GPU will be a straight 3x core increase (1536 on Switch 2 vs 512 on SD). The Nvidia Leak had GPU tests with 3 performance profiles, those being 4.2w @ 660MHz, 9.3w @ 1125MHz and finally 12w @ 1380MHz. The 1st one seems to be for portable mode, the 2nd one for docked and the last one for stress testing. If these are actually the performance profiles for Switch 2, then we'd be looking at 2.02 TFLOPs, thus exceeding SD at portable mode already, not even including Nvidia exclusive hardware & features like Tensor & RT cores + DLSS.
On the CPU side we're looking at a 8C/8T Cortex A78C (likely at 2GHz) vs 4C/8T Zen 2 at 3.5 GHz setup. Since most games nowadays are well optimized for 6-8 CPU cores i think the Switch 2 will perform better in the long term.
The biggest mystery though is the RAM. 8GB is not going to cut it and i think most developers who are developing for Switch 2 likely already asked for more if Nintendo were going for 8GB. I'm assuming we'll see 12GB for the consumer device and 16GB for the dev-kit.
As for the storage solution recent leaks suggest SD Express will be used since Samsung is planning to release such consumer-level cards this year. The absolute lowest-end budget cards supposedly reach nearly 1GB of transfer speed per second. I'd assume Nintendo will settle with a UFS storage solution that hits that 1GB/s transfer speed, likely UFS 3.1 in this case. It's not quite as good as the NVME drives on the more expensive SD models, but still miles ahead of the cheapest option with the 64GB EMMC internal storage and using Micro-SD cards for games.
It will definitely be interesting to see how they compare and in what aspects they have the advantage and disadvantage.

So I think the likelihood is clocks for the CPU will be around 1.5Ghz as theres twice as many as last time and the IPC is already 3x faster than the original A53 cores at the same clocks. I just hope it had minimum 88GB/s bandwidth in portable.

Nintendo for their part currently sells their OLED Switch for $350 USD, so I don't know why DF has set their question at $299 for Switch 2, if they release this with an OLED screen it isn't going to be less that the current one.

  • @vargsieber
    @vargsieber Před 2 měsíci

The question isn't if they can because yes, they can in theory sell a handheld with the same power as the steam deck for 299$.
The real question is if they would do that and the answer is a clear no, Nintendo keeps being Nintendo so they will release a system that's weaker than the 3 year old competition for around 400 bucks and it will be outdated and underpowered garbage 2 or 3 years after release, just like the switch. The more interesting question would be what gimmick they do this time to con a casual audience into buying their system.

Smash is more or less a software issue, 6 frames of lag in the LOCAL graphics pipeline, 4 frames of lag in the online that can't be disabled. Hacks like the HewDraw Remix have alleviated these issues.
I believe the Switch itself has 3 frames of graphics lag no matter what, which is .....okay-ish, playing like NES / SNES games on a 1ms refresh gaming monitor with a wired controller, which is actually how i play it.

@@Controllerhead Smash itself has more base input lag than it should, but many games on Switch have more than they should. For example, Wii U ports tend to have more latency on Switch than they did on Wii U.

@@bulletpunch9317Someone on Reddit recently examined and studied MLID's claims and so called leaks and found that he was only reasonably correct on his speculations, rumours and so called leaks around 58-60% of the time. It was taken from 72 of his fairly recent prediction and "leak" videos, since Zen 3 launched.
However it also shown that in the build up to a product being released, he would often flipflop and change several details of the hardware specifications multiple times within his claims. Also many of those claims often covered a wide bracket or range of values.
The fact is if you cover a lot of bases with multiple differing speculations (guesses) over a wide range, then one of those is eventually going to pan out and hit close to the mark.
For example even I could speculate, that the next single core gains on Ryzen 5 CPU's will be somewhere around 10-30%. I know that it will likely be within that range, based on past uplifts from AMD CPU's and typical gen on gen tech advancements. I could then release 2 videos, one claiming 10-20% and another claiming 20-30% and know one of the two videos will likely hit the mark. It doesn't take a "leaker" for me to get it right, just a few educated guesses.
Also, as many have pointed out, he also often uses leaks from other sources and then claims that he also heared the very same thing from his "inside leak" weeks ago (utter BS, BTW).
He has even deleted several older videos in the past, where his claims and speculations where wildly wrong (a lot for Ampere, RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 stuff, BTW). He then denies that he even made such claims to begin with.
The guy is often called out for being nothing but a shill and the biggest fraud amongst the tech community on Reddit. Personally, I kinda agree with them.

Yep. Nintendo will design a console that provides their first party devs enough power to accommodate their visions for Zelda and Mario whilst also taking into account battery and the physical size limitations of a younger audience.

The Steam Deck launched at $399 several years ago.
A Switch 2 that can match it should be able to hit $299 (whether Nintendo decides on that price is another matter).
First off the Steam Deck has a few features that would not make it into the Switch 2:
-The Decks haptic touch pads would not be in to the Nintendo
-The Switch 2 will likely not have a slot for an SSD.
-The Switch 2 will not have an OS that also functions as computer.
If you were to take these features off of a Steam Deck it could likely hit a $299 price point.
If the Switch 2 is going to be backwards compatible, they are not going to stray from the current formula of touchscreen and detachable joycons, they might even make the current ones compatible.
Nintendo currently sells the OLED Switch for $350 without issue, I don't see them going below that price... the fact that the Steam Deck and other PC portables are gaining acceptance (ie people are comfortable with their price range) could signal to Nintendo that they have some leeway.
