Suzuki Intruder VS1400: Change Clutch and Springs - Tear Down Part 17

  • How to change the clutch on a Suzuki VS1400 Intruder. One of the most common questions on this motorcycle is how to change the clutch. I will be installing a GECKO clutch on the Intruder, along with a set of Ryan Winters custom clutch springs to remove any slippage in the clutch.
The new clutch will provide better low-end torque and off the line response along with a smoother gear change.
    Part 1 - Intro and Prep 0:01
    Part 2 - Remove clutch case 1:20
Part 3 - Remove the clutch case gasket 2:51
    Part 4 - What is a torque wrench 3:52
Part 5 - Stop the clutch basket from rotating 4:46
Part 6 - Remove clutch bolts and springs 6:27
Part 7 - Remove clutch and steel plates 8:51
Part 8 - Remove clutch basket wave washer 10:37

Part 10 - Steel clutch plate orientation 12:20
    Part 11 - Install new clutch 13:26
Part 12 - Install and torque new clutch springs and bolts 14:15

Hey Hagar, have you measured the exact thickness of the Gecko clutch plates? I know the new original suzuki clutch plates should have 3,15mm. I just do not want to buy any thinner aftermarket clutch plates. Thank you for answer

Its not nearly as hard as you may think, just be VERY slow when reinstalling the spring bolts. the baskets are made from a very low quality aluminium composite which is known to blow out, Nice a steady does it. With your videos that I trust and some talent I can accomplish these tasks. My greatest hurdle has been finding parts. Will you share with me/us some of your sources for parts especially for the tasks I have mentioned. Thank you again for you insightful videos of work on the VS 1400. Thanks for the video. I would like to add a tid bit of info if you replace the clutch on a functioning bike. I had to attach a hose to the bleeder port on the slave cylinder and crack it to relieve the pressure during the clutch housing installation. If not the slave cylinder push rod prevents the housing from seating completely. Sorry if this is a duplicate.

I figure it acts as a washer spreading out the torque, I didn't see it till reassembly and wasn't sure which way it went. I rebuilt my clutch several times, using different plates and replacement OEM springs. Same frustrating result...slipping again. I pulled the hub, cams and basket off; all looked fine. I ordered Winter's springs and noticed they are a larger diameter. Do the bores in the pressure plate wear enough for stock OEM springs to slip past the pressure plate down to the hub and spring slider? Seems like these new springs are designed to correct the problem. Chime in experts.

Would you recommend changing the seperator plates or can I just use the old ones?

    •  Před 3 lety

You can use the old ones providing they have not got burn marks on them from the heat of the engine. Typically purple and blue is a tell tale sign that you need to replace them aswell.

When you are torqueing the 8 bolts holding the clutch basket in, how many inch pounds are you setting the wrench at? The book is pretty vague...

    •  Před 4 lety +1

Hey William, I believe you would want a maximum of 3.7 inch pounds. Google will be able to convert the measurements for you :) I put in 10nM into inch pounds and 3.7 is what it says.

    •  Před 4 lety

Hey bro, thanks for the kind words. Have you got your engine in the bench or is it still in the bike as normal???

    •  Před 4 lety

If your back wheel is on the ground then make sure it is in neutral gear. The clutch basket gets its power from the crank unless your in neutral

    •  Před 4 lety +1

@@bartoszbartosz7650 In your video, are you IN GEAR when it is "locked" up? If so then that is NORMAL - the clutch basket rotates with the engine, it should not move freely when it is in gear.

It is possible to put a five-speed transmission in an engine with a four-speed transmission?

    •  Před 3 lety +1

It may be tempting and even possible, providing you were able to change out the gearing of the 4 speed. But from what I know, the 4 speed was just as powerful, if not more so than the 5 speed. I am actively seeking a 4 speed at the moment so that I can answer more 4 speed questions ;)

    •  Před 3 lety

Clutch bleeder nut? Not 100% sure I know what you are referring too my friend. The engine Oil ideally needs to be dropped before working on the clutch, you can do this by removing the sump plug on the underside of the engine. Then you can remove the casing bolts, remove casing to get at the clutch.

Still jumps an stalls out when put in gear.Even in neutral , bike wants to creep. I did buy the clutch springs that you recommended. Now it is impossible to get my bike into neutral in 1 try when I am sitting at a red light. They are to much spring for the bike. I also changed the clutch and I used a Barnett clutch . I have no idea why it is almost impossible to to get the bike into neutral when the bike is running . If the bike is turned off it goes into neutral no problem . It is like the clutch is still engaged when I try to get into neutral at a light. I still recommend the springs they are good springs. I am just having a problem with them and I don't know why . Would you know why this is happening and how I can fix the problem ?

    •  Před 3 lety

@ I did this back in July of 2020 when I was on vacation and they have not broken in yet. My motorcycle mechanic thinks they are way too much spring and he feels I should go back to the OEM springs. I have talked to several people about this and everyone says the same thing to go back to the OEM springs. On another note I put a cobra exhaust on the bike and it sounds amazing . of course I took out the baffles . But DAMN does it sound amazing. There is a video of it on Utube somewhere.
