Total War: Warhammer 2 Review - It's all downhill from here...

  • Total War: Warhammer II is not the latest game in the series, but remains relevant due the constant DLC, patches, and updates it receives even three years after its release. It's an enormous game, with enough content to satisfy players for hundreds, if not thousands of hours. But it comes at a price - Warhammer 2 features a DLC model many find overwhelming. But is it enough to dismiss what the game does right? All of that, and more - in my review of Total War: Warhammer II!

There's SO MUCH FRIGGIN CONTENT in this game!!! I've barely scratched the surface and I've spent 200 hrs in it! I obsessively bought all of the DLC and have tried like half of them... I'm traditionally a huge historical TW fan and I initially HATED the warhammer games...

Honestly the DLC policy for the total war games is one of the best that I've come across, mostly just because everything from the DLC is added to the game for free for you to play against, let you pick and choose between the ones that you actually want to play as without feeling like you are missing out on anything. Add that to the free updates that come along with each DLC, and it becomes something I can laud CA for. But maybe I just see it that way because I play paradox games, who can say.

But I also must say that the every penny I spent on the DLC is worth it. Sure, if you join the train late and end up having to catch up with people, it's expensive, but I bought this in 2017 and have never got bored of it. To me, that makes the DLC worth it.

Tww2 is the best total war game IMO. There is such a focus on the battles, its amazing.
The ONLY thing that sucks is the campaign isnt a little more complicated like 3 kingdoms. I love 3 kingdoms campaign but hate the battles because there is no variety.
I love tww2 battles because there are an insane number of units that are visibly and act differently, but the fucking campaign map is lame af in comparison compared to the tactical options in combat.

I would say that warhammer 2 is the best of modern total war: it's a good arcade game but it's not tactically deep. Where earlier TW games rewarded balanced armies that used a mix of units, warhammer 2 popularized the concept of doomstacks

Computer player in Campaign have access to all new units, all new heroes etc. So you can focus on 1-2 fractions that you like. And amount of work in this DLC is amazing, since with every one comes a biiig changes to game itself. Which you still get for free!

  • @raylast3873
    @raylast3873 Před 2 lety +1

Yeah, I agree that this is the best TW. It just feels way more interesting to play somehow. Traditionally, I‘ve always stuck to the Rome games, and usually just played as a handful of the factions. TWII I‘ve played over 800 hours, with a different faction every time. Haven‘t even gotten to the Lizardmen, Skaven, or any human factions, Dwarves or Orcs. Forget about the Norsca, Beastmen or Demons. I‘ve only even started my first Campaign as the Tomb Kings (and damn, they are a headache, try fighting even just a small stack of Dwarven Infantry with Skeleton Spears and NO ARCHERS!).
There‘s just a lot of stuff to do compared to traditional total war games. They really got the maximum mileage out of everything.
I do have to agree about the DLC as well though. Even getting just a couple extra races that I was interested in cost me as much as the base game all over again, and while the base game still plenty of content (maybe too much for practical uses), it still feels severely cut down if you don‘t get any of the DLC. Like imagine playing against the Tomb Kings and Pirates for hundreds of hours but never getting to play them because they‘re DLC. And the Tomb Kings are actually pretty expensive. There is just way too much of this game that feels like it needs to be there that‘s locked away in DLCs.

I am just so so so glad that we actually got a genuine high-effort Warhammer Fantasy strategy game, despite the fact that Games Workshop shuttered that universe for the sake of the comparatively incredibly uninteresting Age of Sigmar. I love this setting and I love these games, even in spite of their predatory DLC structure.
Remember the times when the gameplay features of an older game were simply included in its iterative sequel and you'd only have to buy the prior release if you wanted to catch up on the story? Yeah, good times. But I guess now that the industry generates way more money than back then - just absolutely ridiculous heaps of it - its just not financially viable to do that anymore... for whatever reason.

I don’t think the dlc model is that bad all strategy games suffer from large amounts of dlc. I think CA does a lot better then other companies when it comes to this as well as almost all dlc arrive with a free legendary lord (some of the free ones are actually the some of the best campaigns in the game) The content form dlc’s are also always in the game for the ai to use so if you don’t buy a race pack you can still fight against them in battle which means even if you only buy the base game the world still feels full and diverse

Tbh having developed games on my own, 163 bucks for a game this big isn't expensive.
In fact, we tend to underpay games. 60 bucks for a new game is quite cheap considering the huge amount of work for delivering that game (considering the game is polished, and not in a Ubisoft/Cyberpunk state)
However there should be a pack or at least the possibility for new players to get every DLCs after a while (1-2 years after release) for cheaper.
And you should be able to buy factions independently in W2 without having to buy W1

Great video. I completely agree on making Mortal Empires free for all players (and I am saying that as someone who owns both games - I just want the game to be more accesible for newer players).
I would love it if they did a "Steam complete edition" similar to Gladius - Relics of War. It's basically a bulk package of the game and all the DLC at a discount. Whenever a new DLC get's added to Gladius, I can just buy the complete edition again and I get the discount which is a great bonus for owning all the content.
As someone who has bought each game and DLC at release to support development I am still able to understand that as a new player this would quickly get daunting with the amount of DLC. I do hope they take some of the advice you gave to make it more accessible. TWW is among the top 3 games for me and I have close to 2k hours playtime inn it and more to come.
Unlike you however, I am of the opinion where I want them to keep adding more and more DLC's. The more content I have to enjoy, the better. And I look forward to the next DLC to come after Twisted and Twilight (I am hoping for beastmen DLC!). Maybe if CA could package the DLC's in bundles it would be easier to swallow for newer players? I don't know, I just want more :D

EVERYTHING SHOULD BE FREE ONCE YOU ACTUALLY PURCHASE THE GAME!! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!? Yeah... I love Warhammer. I don't give two fucks about these greed infested abominations they call games. Did someone say miniatures?
As someone who has been fascinated with Warhammer for 30 years, or so, they've always had a "dlc" issue.
*why, back in MY day, you'd spend $200 on the single faction, 5000 point army, and have to assemble and paint it yourself. Plus, find someone else willing to do the same, then find a solid 4 hours (or more) to do a single battle.
In fact, if there is any kind of sale this Christmastide, I think you've convinced me it is worth buying TWH II to go with my TWH I.

You've got a good point about the DLC stuff, but I think it's too late for that shit now. That would be like CA spitting in the face of the fans that have stayed with the game since the beginning, bought everything at launch for full price to support it and now new players are getting massive discounts and also don't have to buy the original. Plenty of people can hold resentment over these things. It's one of the reasons that CA was having difficulties with making additional content for DLC races like the Wood Elves and Beastmen.
Might be something the can implement in three, even something they have to do if they want new players, but I don't see it happening at the moment.

loved the video but As someone who has sunk a pointless amount of time into this game (over 500hrs) I personally believe the monetization model and dlc (except for the blood tax) style makes sense for the most part since they put a lot of work and effort into making wh1 and making the mortal empires campaign work which people wouldn't know unless they got wh2 around when it was released and mortal empires was released several months late cause stitching the map together was a massive ball ache and that being the case, you can't have any dlc faction from wh1 without owning wh1 as they would have no where to start or anything of the sort. It is a little greedy but no one likes not getting paid for something they spent months or years on.

I'm all for being pro-consumer and I don't know how CA's monetary stream actually is. But considering the constant development not on one but 3 games (maybe more if we consider they're developing warhammer 3 too atm) you have to get your money somewhere. Is the blood pack dlc bullshit? of course, still haven't bought those because fuck that. But I have all DLC on my wishlist at all times and they often enough go in sale to 50% (never really higher). I would never suggest buying all DLC at the same time anyway because you can only experience one at a time unless you're just playing multiple campaigns at the same time. The mortal empire issue could definitely be better, having to own both games as a complete new player is off putting and hopefully they reconsider this for warhammer 3. I find it hard to say that CA is anti-consumer for all the constant work and content we get. All the updates to the games are free. The bigger faction DLC's you have to pay for yes but if they update a race you don't have to buy their latest lord pack to experience the changes or new units.
This is not a good discussion to have on youtube comments. Good vid anyway man, I just find it hard to say their DLC's are completely anti consumer. But I'm def biased and have patience and play too much
