Total War Warhammer 3 & Immortal Empires One Year Later

- It's been exactly one year since Total War: Warhammer 3 saw the light of the day, and on this occasion, I felt it was time to revisit not only this game, but the entire Warhammer franchise, in one long series analysis and review. When you really think about, it's actually crazy what Creative Assembly managed to do with the Total War Warhammer series. Like fantasy or not, what they've accomplished is quite astonishing when considering the size and scope of the Immortal Empires campaign in particular. And whether you're eagerly waiting for Warhammer 3 DLC or not, quite a lot has changed in the past year, even if we were to purely talk under the hood. And so, is Warhammer 3 worth it in 2023?
In this video, I take a look at the entire Warhammer franchise and tell you my thoughts on which game in the series is my favourite and why, how the series developed, and whether Warhammer 3 is worth buying in 2023 - both as a historical and fantasy Total War fan. I'm also checking out the best mods for the game, at least my favourites, among them a crazy WWI mod, and letting you know how you can find them. I'd love to hear your stories from these games, good or bad!

glad someone caught it :D
I don't care how many factions they bring in there's just something magical and satisfying about playing the empire and using mankind to fight all manners of creatures. I've played other factions but nothing feels the same. I just can't explain it but I've heard it from others too.
I feel the same way about dwarfs
Agreed, fighting the monsters feels more rewarding than being them
My favourite factions are the Mayan/Lizardmen and the Egyptians/Tombkings. You add some Golden Age of Pirates and Warhammer 2 is a dream come true.
I love the Tombkings as well :)
Would you have any particular gaming laptop recommendations so I can start playing Warhammer 3?
14:35 - CA heard your plea and listened, Chaos Dwarves are coming to TW3 and they look pretty glorious to me.
Hear hear, hopefully it's a great faction! :D
I used to have a heavy bias towards historic TW titles, bu the sheer variety of units and factions of warhammer has won me over. It will be hard to go back to historic titles.
I have been a total fan since rome total war 1, but when warhammer got announced I was sceptical. But man from day1 I got hooked and it never let me go. Now years later warhammer 3 immortal empires keeps expanding. Who knows where it will end. The diversity in mechanics, units, races and so on. And the lore is just a chefs kiss. Yes I also want a rome 3 and medieval 3 but man this game has me hooked right now.
Similar thing happened to me, except with black women.
I played one Rome 2 campaign. Tried 3k. But then I picked up WH3… my poor bank account. I’ve put in 250 hours over the last 3-4 weeks. Bought a few DLCs. Finished a Cathay Realms of Chaos. Then switched to IE and so far have done a Kostaltyn, Volkmar, Khorne, Be’lakor, Gor’Rok, Zhatan, now an Ikit campaign. I’ve learned enough to bump it up to Hard/Hard and as it all clicks into place, the game just gets more and more satisfying. I understand the drama but to me it’s negligible. TW fans shit on CA (for good reason) but as a variety gamer… they are no EA, they are no Bethesda, they are no Blizzard. Blood God DLC is stupid but everything else provides enough content to almost if not totally justify it’s value.
What’s really awesome is all the diff campaign mechanics. Replaying a faction a second time is always much different as you gain more experience. Example, when I played Volkmar I conquered lots of territory, but wasn’t near good enough to get even half the Books of Nagash by turn 200 and I switched campaigns. Can’t wait to go back to a new Volkmar campaign on VHard/VHard and smash some skellies. (Khemtri declaring war on turn 4 or so absolutely kicked my ass in my first playthru, had to restart and waste cash to get a non-aggression just to get started.) The game gets so much better when you start to understand all the units. I heavily relied on normal autoresolve in many first playthrus bc enemy armies just straight up scared me. 😂 Now I feel comfortable smashing nearly everything in manual. It really makes you feel like Sun Tzu. 🤣
"Skellingtons and rat-people". Yes, my favourites. WHII was amazing!
HAHA DISGUSTING, MY FRIEND, DISGUSTING
Around 4:30 you mentioned that it can take thousands of hours and you still wont play every legendary character and that is 100% true. By the time game 3 was due to be released, I had over 2,000 hours playing Warhammer 2 and had yet to complete every campaign. I forced myself to get a short victory with everyone. Never again lmao. I'll be sticking to my Elves and Chaos tyvm
brother you've played 83 days of total war warhammer
How I felt trying Nurgle lol. Everything else I’ve tried is at least decent so far, with Chaos Dwarfs, Warriors of Chaos, Cathay, Skaven, and Empire all being standouts to me. It was strange to me that I enjoyed WoC though because I enjoy watching missile units obliterate approaching infantry. Lizardmen felt slightly underwhelming, but I think that’s mostly because the other Lizardmen in Lustria basically conquered my campaign for me then allied. I only fought the Hunstmarshall and then Tzeench for my last few settlements for the long. Also, Geomantic Web is useless. Who the hell really cares abt commandments. I slap the money one on and only change it if I’m warned about corruption, control, or need an army.
I was disapointed they didnt improve the Horde Gameplay and Factions, I really thought the Chaos Warriors as a Horde was really fun. Maybe because I love Attila.
The beastmen horde is 1000x better than it was for game 1 and most of game 2
@@alexs_toy_barn well Beastmen were literally the worst faction out of the 19 available. By far. Chaos Warriors were the main Horde faction. Attila introduced Horde gameplay to Total War, It was an innovation that went nowhere. Im dissapointed, Warhammer has the perfect scenario for Horde Gameplay
@@gerardotejada2531 really, horde mode was introduce with Barbarian Invasion, an expansion of Rome I Total War.
@@gerardotejada2531 I would recommend giving beastmen a try if you’re looking for good horde gameplay. The problem with hordes in warhammer 1 and 2 was the AI’s tendency to capture ruined settlements after you razed a settlement and moved on but with the beatsmen overhaul at the end of WH2 they put a mechanic that fixes that problem and they are still primarily a horde based faction.
Haven’t played them since the end of wh2 when they got reworked but it was a really fun experience playing a taurox campaign and would highly recommend it if you are willing to pay for the dlc pack for it.
@@gerardotejada2531 beastmen are now one of the most fun factions honestly
I'm a Warhammer nerd from the eighties buying the 1st edition and there was little lore then. I used Risk pieces color coded for races in my kitchen table( was too poor for miniatures lol). The Old World was slowly fleshed out with lore first. Then the New World. East always that mystery. This game despite its flaws is just a treat for my fifty something self. It was always the " Disneyland" of fantasy realms. The blended history, Tolkien and even Michael Moorcock as well as a few others into a more grim fantasy realm. This is much better than those Risk pieces battles I had in early eighties.
Immortal Empires will always be fun :) Its kinda BS they waited so long to release it but all is well that ends well ;)
Haha well it’s been out in beta for like 6 months already though :D
The Organic AI Overhaul mod seems nice as well
The way forward for historical total war titles is a heavy focus on mechanics and realism and gameplay tactics in order to compensate for less unit diversity etc
I guess you already know this, but Spears got "Charge Defence vs. Large" by bracing and facing (Halting). But I get the point, more automated and restrictive than a good old toggle.
Btw: I belive all small units also gain 600 mass by bracing (halting), wich does not make much diffrence if a Dread Saurian is incoming. But can reduce inpact damage of a ligt or medium cav depending on the mass difference. If its worth sacrificing a contercharge for, needs more testing pr matchup than I got the patience for :p
ref: TWW stats, KV_Rule (bracing_immovable_by_small_entity_mass 600)
You get a sub. Great Vid
Thank you so much! :)
id say due to the size of the setting, the contents of this game is spread around across the different factions and map location.
this unfortunately prove to be a problem for players like yourself who only play exclusively certain faction like the empire.
Because regarding your comment about the map variety for example, there's actually different kind of maps that allow more choke point style and what not, that you will encounter if only you are fighting with or against certain factions.
in this review you also didnt mention 2 major thing that might be the deal maker for some.
- The fact that this is the first title in the series that offer a full on 8 player multiplayer campaign (that's not hot seat) as well as simultaneous turns.
- and this one might be due to it only being recently announced after this vid is posted. but finally new faction teaser for content as well as immortal empire campaign being accessible for anyone who own the base 3rd title (no longer need the 1st and 2nd game to access the map)
Awesome vid
Based empire enjoyer
By Sigmar, we enjoy this empire by right
Epic Andy!
Thank you, my friend! Keep on keeping on!
Awesome Video! :) im new to the game. Do you think Vampire Counts will get updated? :) I love Vampires and starting playing cuz of them :3
Free to play now. So worth to play. Hehe
6:18 "magnus opum" don't you mean "magnum opus" lol
I gotta check if they finally fixed the pathfinding because they haven't addressed it in the patch video
Edit: Bug still in the game they haven't fixed it
Have you tried the Radious modpack?
To add some of the things you mentioned would require a lot more micro on a game that has enough of that (faction depending) chariots alone need to be babied the whole battle or else basically useless (I tend to avoid them because of this) but overall this game delivers so much to so many it’s really hard to complain about anything other then certain things just not working like the gunpowder issue in tww3 which makes certain factions or units a lot less deadly because of a minor slope in a hill you happen to be standing on lol. If everything that’s already in place worked flawlessly and as intended this game would make this game top tier vs anything else released within the last 15yrs regardless of genre… imo of course. I’m 35 and grew up with all the old goodies and I’ve waited my entire life to have “lords of the realm” type game but on steroids with a warhammer makeover and CA delivered that, 3x’s over. This game a truly a gem and should be put along side BG3 in terms of delivery, yes the DLC’s coulda been a bit better in tww3 but they Alrdy said they will fix that. Now if CA could recreate this with a WH40k makeover would be epic and could die happy lol. All 3 games are the only game I could easily play for 12+ hrs straight and not even realize it…. Can’t say any other game has done the same thing for me at least since the late 90’s.
I just hope they get rid of the fog on the map.
Magnum Opus
Any particular gaming laptop recommendations?
if you havent played a nurgle campaign i highly recommend it. i wasnt sure about them either and i dont know the lore but i gave them a go just to find out and it was really a lot of fun almost as fun as playing kairos fateweaver
Only problem is both have a relatively difficult campaign opening. Tzeentch is surrounded by enemies and Nurgle is just so weak at the beginning imo. I started both but ended up moving on for now. I’m sure I’ll enjoy them once I feel comfy on VHard/VHard. Currently on Hard/Hard but still have a tiny bit to learn.
@@brendandrummond1739 with Tzeentch i swing hard right take out the nurgle thing and then sack or raze the elf wizards capital to slow him down a bunch pop back home and take the rest of the territories on the south pole then move out from there bird boy is op
good video
any plan on doing a review on the Grimhammer mod?
No plans for the moment. What are your thoughts on it and why? Would you want a review?
It's free content.
Why would you need someone to tell you how good or bad it is?
Thing with grimhammer is I've seen people larp over it as the definitive way to play the game and people hating it cause it's bloaty with giants having like 6 passives and an active ability.
@@loowick4074 Free content doesn't mean worth your TIME, which is arguably more valuable than money
I played warhammed 2 and 3. Do you think I should invest time in 1 before I hump into immortal empire ?
I wish I could turn off the one hit kill nukes.
well, WH3 is actually known as the buggiest one of the series. and it is still not fixed 1 year after release. that's why people left the game. just look at the steam charts. even IE and free release of IE couldn't change this.
Reiksguard knights with rifles are definitely not lore friendly.
'magnus opum'? :-)
I like TWWII best because I like the idea of traveling to the new world and taking its riches, which stems all the way back to Sid Meier's Colonization. Plus the races weren't that over the top as the new Deamon races are. Basically I want Empire II haha!
Whilst I love Total Warhammer, CA haven't had decent sieges since Medieval 2. The top level Castles in particular were amazing to defend and assault.
Medieval 2 Knights also dropped their lances after the initial charge and used a secondary weapon. It would be nice to bring that back!
yeah the close-quarter combat with lances is just killing the immersion
I enjoyed the sieges in shogun and Attila. Also Brittania is supposed to have some of the best siege maps.
Medieval 2 was not the last TW with great sieges, that would be Thrones of Britannia. Rome 2 and Atilla both had great sieges too.
@@HeloisGevit I've not played Thrones of Britannia as I heard bad things about it. Thanks for the correction! 🙂
@@williammoore9794 It's not a flawless game by any means, but everyone seems to agree that it's sieges are a highlight.
You do realize that you don’t have to own all three games to play immortal empires now, right? You only have to have total war Warhammer three
I am downloading T3III and I was wondering this very thing, Thanks for confirming,
İ didn't like the first Warhammer. So I'm hesitate to buy this one. İ think i might go the old way and get it for free to try it
Give game pass for pc a try, it has game 3 on it and the combined map Andy mentioned is free now
Recently CA made it so Immortal Empires only needs Warhammer 3 to play it, not all 3 games anymore. Plus, any DLC only needs Warhammer 3 for IE. So if you want to play the Tomb Kings, a Warhammer 2 race, you don't need Warhammer 2 anymore, just Warhammer 3 to play them in IE.
Definitely! You still need the other games to play those games' factions though ;)
@@AndysTake If you want to play Karl Franz, you still need the first game. But so many barriers have recently been taken down and allow for new players and their wallets to have an easier time.
Karl is not a recommend for new players anyway.
Hardish campaign and almost useless allies.
Cathay is the more easier "human" faction to play with better tanky infantry.
High elves are probably the easiest to recommend for me to new players.
The visually make sense.
Guy with big shield and spear in front.
Archer behind.
You can say that the empire has similar visual indication also.
But your empire spearmen is already running for the hills after a few second in combat with savage orcs and your archers take a little longer to kill stuff than your high elf archers.
Also high elfs have better Ai factions which can usually keep themselves alive a bit longer instead of imploding.
as much as i would love to play at the very least warhammer 1 , i cant because of the weak pc i got and ofc the silly price of 60 euros lol
Magnus Opum?
the most important/greatest work an artist/company has published :)
@@AndysTake I always thought it was 'Magnum Opus' but alright
@@alexs_toy_barn You are correct sir! I blundered mine words
@@AndysTake I actually looked up magnus opum in a Latin translator and I got 'great wealth' or something, rather than 'great work'. Anyway its funny, no one but me noticed
Which mod are you using for that amazing looking gunpowder?
if you dont want a lot of magic dwarfs was always the safe faction. I prefer vampires... close enough to the empire to have some real fun.. i mean... no fun.
Man you confuse me
on the one hand you speak mostly facts
on the other you think that cavalry charges are more devastating in Warhammer 3 than in older titles when historical total wars like Rome could be beat with one unit of Spears and shitty light cav.
And of course that ww1 Units are lore friendly for the empire
Lore friendly in a funny way, but perhaps I’m just wrong in saying that. It feels like a natural progression since the empire is based on Germany after all. Also I don’t get it, cavalry charges are sick in Warhammer 3?
Magnum Opus, not magnus opum lol
I agree. Fans can be rabid. Especially Paradox games fans
In my opinion they simplified the campaign gameplay too much. For example the trade system. There ist simply no one. You are free to trade with everybody across the map, no matter of borders or harbours.
No furtherr costs for resettlement ruined cities. Where do the new settlers come from? The sense was, that your troops settle there and then replenish gradually.
Quest rows are reduced to a simple battle, that doesn't fits into the gameplay. You don't have to do anything.
The Potential of the outposts ist wastet. Why does the player does not have to choose, wether it should be a garrison or a trading post? That would make the interaction with other factions much more immersive.
Diplomacy goes just down to declaring war. And your allies declare sometimes war just in order to draw you in senseless wars against factions you bareley have discovered yet.
The Player bias.
The only way ot the game to challenge the player is throwing armies at him. Soon enough 10 oder 12 per turn. It's beatable, but boring from the point on, you fought three hundert battles against chaos.
And yes: The chaos. If only they where coming from north, as a threat, that forces the civilised people to cooperate, as it is shown in that newest trailer.
If they don't make tha campaign part not more interesting, I think I won't return to that game. It's a pity for the awsome design of the races and factions, and the looks in battles, but the game is combined from two parts. And the strategical part is now too simple built, just paint the map.
Tomb kings are the second most humanoid race after high elves? I guess dark elves don't exist 🤣🤣
First!! Lit

Warhammer 3 Is great
there is gonna be a historic game, hopefully empire 2, and then
ooooooh buddy, and then its warhammer 40k total war time
we can only hope!
Warhammer III certainly had a rocky start, but I do feel that once Immportal Empires came around, things started falling into the place. The thing that I still find very frustrating however, is that WH3 still feels a lot less stable and performs a lot worse than WH2. I always had a pretty smooth experience with WH2, but even on my pretty overpowered machine, WH3 doesn't perform very well. The Windows version, native Linux version, and Windows version on Linux under Wine/Proton all leave a lot to be desired IMO. But since Immortal Empires is now more or less the de facto way to play, I can't really go back to WH2 I feel...
Dang man you really don't like the mythical stuff huh 🤣. I understand tho. Like I'm not a fan at all of the human and even elf factions. They are boring to me compared to stuff like beastmen and everything else. But that's just personal taste. Just like you have yours
Never was interested for warhammer, for me the historical part is the most interesting feature in any total war, and to not have it makes it not worth time or money
Warhammer 2 was the best one
There is a mod for TW WH3 which had made me fall in love with the game. It’s called Total War Millennium: Modern Warfare. Which lets the Empire build WW1 units such as big artillery zeppelins fighter plans machine guns field guns bunkers and entrench on the battlefield. They are also planning on expanding the mod to other factions such as French for Bretonia, Russians for Kislev. Please check it out I’d love to hear your opinion on it.
That means you didn’t watch the whole video :’(
@@AndysTake still watching ahaha. I commented at the start cause I want more people to know about this mod.
@@Stefan-vz4pm oh nice ;)
Are you Danish?
Norwegian! :)
and they still keep their buggy bad warscape engine thats bad for melee and ai acting turns with unrealistic
Totally agree with you, WH1 and it's more low magic setting is my fave. WH3 daemon's armies and saturated colors ruins it for me.
Glad I'm not alone!
But demons are cool
Seems like you dislike the warhammer part of this total war series. NURGLE FOREVER.
"Fans can be rabid" Wrong. Its people with a level head that aren't fans who give genuine criticism that makes CA recoil. Out of all the gaming communities I've seen this one is the most apologetic of CA's bad practices, which always ends up with "I told you so" on release day.
As a warhammer fan i disagree with you on almost every point you make. Just wait for the next historical and leave other people their fun
Exactly, why complain about the unhistorical and fantasy aspects of a fantasy title.
The walls and buildings are comically large because it’s warhammer, you got to do some research, if you don’t like the magic and stuff Total War Rome exist.
Blood for the Blood God DLC was not included in the base game for the rating. CA and Sega wanted a T for Teen rating which they couldn't have gotten with the Blood. So they added it as a cheap DLC for those wanting it. The good thing is you only have to buy it once over the series. So you'll have Blood for Warhammer 1, 2 and 3 with one purchase.
Yea which is BS. This is like if CoD removed any blood spurts and makes you pay for it.
If they wanted to exclude it just for the ratings, they would make it free and optional to redeem. A total war game isn't a total war game without the blood.
I wish CA would just give people what they really want…THRONES OF BRITANNIA DLC!!
LOOOOOL
If CA really wanted to make people rage quit or infiltrate their studios, they’d release TOB DLC before Chaos Dwarfs.
@@emanuelalfred1565 I actually have a slight suspicion that there might be an announcement for something else CA is working on between now and Chaos Dwarves. April is a good amount of time away, long enough to use that time window to hype something else.
Pontus dlc for warhammer
your opinion is so biased. they were so lazy over the years. there are still bugs from game 1 in game 3. Focus always was on selling dlc and not quality. To praise them like that feels cheap, maybe you want to be a CA-partner? Becaus thats what most of them (have to) be like.
your "friends" made 3 videos, and its already a better type of content than u do
So glad you think so, you’re welcome for me pointing them out to you! ❤️ have a great day! 🙏
I dont understand how rome 1 sieges were 100 times more fun than warhammers sieges. They even reworked them and somehow managed to make them worse
Giving CA credit where its due, THEY KNOW how to make KICK ASS TRAILERS! They definitely hit the nail on the head when it comes to the "Warhammer feel", and overall they are good games, just not "traditional" total war, particularly with how the combat works.
