    Great advice with regards to riding in the dirt. Dirt bike riding teaches everything you'll ever need to know about controlling a motorcycle as you'll find yourself in many more "awkward" and unique situations in the dirt rather than on the road. I personally grew up riding in the dirt at age 6 and it made all the difference in the world regarding my comfort level on the road. BTW, I ride a 2007 Heritage Softail Classic at 5'7" with zero issues. Props to Matt for pointing this out. If you ever doubt what these guys can do, attend a Supercross even in person some time!!! They actually hit the brake or give gas to control their bike in the air (raises or lowers the front end of the bike) and also have time to strip the plastic off their goggles! Amazing!

    H-D should really be paying you for these videos, you thoroughly convinced me that a sportster will never be a big twin. After visiting a local dealer and sitting on some bikes the street bob fit me the best. There used to be the superglide (i test rode) and loved those things - they looked essentially like bigger sportsters. Unfortunately H-D does not make those any more. I loved the lack of bar vibration at highway speeds and minimal to no peg vibration and the ride was plush (compared to my iron883). I think the street bob may do the same things just worried about it being just as harsh as my sportster. my commute is 120 miles round trip and i'd like to have something that is livable with that range. I tried sitting on a road king (but I couldn't even reach the kickstand haha), and I cannot stand all the electronics and other things on the other touring bikes (I stare at computers all day - last thing i want to look at when I am on a bike). If you guys were in the D.C./Balitmore area i'd definitely be giving you the business. Will go for a test ride sometime soon (was about to start raining when I was there and didn't want to get a new bike soaked).

    Couldn't agree more on the "get a Dyna if you have experience" comment. Been riding dirt bikes since I was 10 and bought a Low Rider S for my first street bike. I never feel like the bike is too much for me to handle because of everything you described about dirt bike experience. Great videos, Matt, keep it up!

    Really dig the StreetBob. Classic looks. Great review Matt and I agree with you about how some of the best riders are dirt riders. I learned how to ride in the dirt and being taught that way is great for a number of reasons. You take your spills and wrecks in the dirt without hurting anyone else or damaging anything and learn a LOT. Thanks for making this review!!

    Totally agree, skip the Sportsters go straight to a Dyna. I believe Sportsters make HD look bad. Very slow. I'm 5'7 130 pounds and I ride my Dyna 3000 miles a month. Also I've been riding less than a year. Don't be afraid of skipping the Sportster.

      Art Solo I love my SB but still want that 48. I should've kept the nightster. It was a great bike. I feel it was faster than my bob

    • @artsolo5389
      @artsolo5389 Před 7 lety

      The problem I have with Sportsters is that they have no power. They feel, well, weak. I know Sportster guys will disagree but it's true. If you want the true HD experience go to the Dyna IMHO

    • @Wecanhelp
      @Wecanhelp Před 7 lety +2

      I don't see sportster making HD bad, now the street series yes. I'm 210 6ft and my 1200 goes well, I do have some upgrades on it to push it up to 70 something hp and 70 torque. To each his own my sportster is a breeze splitting lanes and I could fit it into my garage with a car (which was my selling point).

    • @artsolo5389
      @artsolo5389 Před 7 lety

      I just think that they aren't what HD is selling when they push the Harley experience. I can't make an argument for why they are worth the price tag. All HD are expensive, but at least I can say that the Dynas and up have true power and HD grunt. I had a Sportster and loved it, but that was when I didn't know any better (as a noob). Anyone who rides any motorcycle I'm with you. I would just never recommend a Sportster to anyone. Bottom line, they don't do any one thing good and IMHO they do a lot wrong, even the 1200. I bought a 1200 Roadster with pipes, tuner and air cleaner. Returned it the next day and gave up my down payment in order to get the loan undone. It was definitely slow. That's how poorly I thought of it. If you're going to spend 12-13k why not just get a Dyna for a little more? It's a way better experience.

  • @AdaMoto83
    @AdaMoto83 Před 2 lety +1

    Mate you nailed it with the sportsters. I’ve a 48 and had it just over a year. It was my first bike so was a great starter bike. But with being 6ft tall I am definitely already looking to step up to a dyna. 6 gears and a bigger frame is what I need not to mention the better size fuel tank. Great review pal. Watching from the UK. 👍🏾👌🏾

    Let me start by saying I've had 4 sport bikes, and rode a cbr1000 to the dealership today. I rode this bike first, as my first harley I've ever ridden. I was blown away by the comfort and acceleration. The brakes, however, were horrible. I rode a sportster 1200 custom right after and the acceleration was pretty good, comfort was just ok but the brakes were twice as good. The street bob is my choice out of the two

    Great review! As a 52 yo, 6'1" man looking to migrate from dirt to the street... you answered most all of my questions about this bike on several levels. I know your a tall young man, so one question I do have for you is... how do the mid controls feel out on the road?? I sat on one here at my local store, and it felt like it might be a little cramped.
    I enjoy all your videos, but this one nailed it for me.
    THANK YOU!

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  Před 7 lety +2

      Yes, they are definitely cramped. I would need to go with the forward controls. My knees are over the gas tank. At 6'1'' you should consider the forwards.

    • @motofrodo
      @motofrodo Před 7 lety +1

      I would agree with Matt. I test rode a 17' about 10 days ago at HB Harley. I'm 6'2", 195 and my legs got cramped up at the hips with the mid controls. I test rode both a 1200 custom and this bad boy. Don't hate but the 1200 custom was more comfortable, which made me sad. I'd love to try this bike again with true forward control. I heard you can move the mid control forward a little more but not very much (like at a spot between mid and forward (1.5 inches?). Need to do more research.

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  Před 7 lety

      Scott Mills yea you're talking about the foot controls that come on a lowrider stock now. They move it up about 1.5 inches. At your height you'll need the full forward controls though

  • @mikeopo
    @mikeopo Před 7 lety

    I own a 08 Street Bob 96. Your review was quite accurate and everything you mention about the suspensions makes sense. I love riding mostly in canyons and the perfect result came with longer shocks (progressive) giving you an extra ground clearance, Racetech front fork complete with springs and hydraulics and a lower handlebar (stock Superglide). It just solved the issue of the wallowing feeling when cornering fast - beware the tire pressure. I have tried all the Dyna family bikes and although the FatBob is nice in my opinion it lacks the pure riding feel of the Street Bob.

    I have a 2012 Super Glide custom. I am 65 and still ride with my better half most of the time. Most of my riding is within 50to 75 miles of home. Being 5'8 and with several fused discs in my back I am happy to be still riding for better than 50 years. I was looking to get anther dyna to replace the FXDC with basically the same ride but more power than the 96 on my current bike. I was looking at the Low Rider or the Low Rider S but I am not sure about putting a two up seat like the Sundowner I have now on my FXDC on it. Also I was looking for handlebars style similar to the stock pull back bars on my current dyna. I guess I may have to wait and hope they bring the FXDC back sometime in the future.

    What you said is so true. I loved my sportster thou. I do wish I would have gotten a street bob instead. I kept my sportster for almost 3 years and after about a year and a half I wanted a bigger bike for all the reasons you stated. If I would have bought a street bob to start with I would probably still have it. My wife and I did a lot of 2 up riding. We traded in the sportster for a roadmaster so we had a big jump up.

    Ridden hundreds of thousands of bikes and I ride a VESPA notes and it's all anyone needs. Speed is amazing, powerful, stylish, chick magnet, loud, plenty of customisation options, and totally bad ass when you put drag bars on it. Sportster rider for 4 years. One major problem, the bigger the bike and more money it is the harder it gets to justify using one of those bigger Harleys as a daily which is what I use my Sportster for. So a daily motorcycle in town, out of town, back roads, highways, a Sportster cannot be beat you can go threw pure absolute hell with them and they just keep going. I have it on a tender during those freezing nights and bam starts just fine, lean angle is plenty more than what a responsible rider will ever use, fast enough to get away from lunatics and drunk drivers, the sportster actually grows to be like your steel horse. It's small and agile. It's my first bike and I am not sure how people are with their rides but mine has become part of me. The big beautiful street glide seem like they are just to nice for the abuse daily use gives a bike. Sportster are like the mustang of the horse world. Compact, hard, and relentless. They just keep carrying you threw every mile you want to go. Guess I'm just a odd ball sentimentalist but I love my bike and can't let it go for nothing.

      James Parchman lol no thanks man, I have a 03 100th anniversary softail. Just when I saw that deuce I was shocked at how nice it was. I like deuces and all just hate that ugly rear tire they come stock with. This one I saw at laidlaws was spoked out front and back that rear tire change makes those bikes way nicer

      Timothy McNally thanks for reply.........mine is stock and 2007 was the only year they came w 96 and 6 speed and last deuce year. if you know anyone interested let me know. mine is 2 tone black and blue and most beautiful deuce ever. I just don't ride much and it deserves an owner who appreciates.

    As always great review! I'd was wondering if you could do a video on thoughts of first time purchase, and take into consideration rider size as well as value. i really like how you mention the bikes ascetics and customization, but would like to see a match up of bikes side by side, as in Street Bob vs soft tail, or iron 883 vs roadster, or something to that idea. Thanks again for making the videos!

    Hi Matt,
    I come from a land down under(Australia) and have have sincerely enjoyed your professional and candid reviews of several bikes over the past few weeks. I currently own a 2010 Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager(excuse the bad language) that my wife and I love to head out on and try to de-stress after a long week. Recently, after a good mate of mine purchased his 3rd Harley, I started thinking that I wouldn't mind something a bit smaller then the two wheeled couch, for a bit of one up riding on weekends with the Boys and Gals. I have been looking at both the 2017 750 Street Rod and The Street Bob.
    I am roughly 6ft 2 and 213 pound in American speak, and I would be interested in your thoughts.
    I have taken a Street Rod for a spin and found it very enjoyable on a short ride, but also found the foot controls irksome. The local HD dealer suggested a customised re jig of the controls to rectify the issue.
    I'm hoping to take the Bob for a spin this weekend.
    Once again great work on the reviews and keep up the great work.
    Cheers,
    Robbie.

    Ahem the Night Train was the first dark custom in 1998 on the Evo motor, transitioning to the 1450 twin cam in 2000. Ok so it might not have had the name Dark Custom but it was definitely the first.

    I have a 2012 street bob with a 96. My bike is getting some warranty service on it so I have a loaner fatboy S. like it but not a softtail guy. The 110 is dope compared to the 96. Kicking around ideas about selling mine and down paymenting on the road king special. Love the look but still never riding the 107 or a road king. I have ridden a street glide with a 103 in it i think it was a 2012. Like it but don't know if I'm ready for s fuller touring style bike. And wouldn't want to go from a Dyna to another dyna. I knows that's a lot to take in!
    Thanks for your thought buddy.

    Hi Matt,
    I had a test riding day at HD in Wolverhampton England (UK) and my favourites were the new 114 Fat bob & Street bob for different reasons. I really felt more bad ass on the Street bob with the mini apes, but I really want forward controls. I’ve seen a few Dyna 103’s with mini apes and forward controls. Was that necessarily a conversation, or did they provide them as standard at some point ? (Thinking 2017).
    What I really want is a raked out, stripped back HD with a maximum of 1 leather bag for a bit of bar hopping and the occasional 150 mile round trip. I love the Break out and have ridden a Rocker on a bar hop. I like the handling of the Street bob 114, but I thought the Dyna looked better. The Fat bob 114, though I loved it was to shorter wheel base to take full advantage of the forward controls. I’m 5’9” (I used to believe was 5’11” 🤣). Can you recommend a bike for me please ? It doesn’t need to be a soft tail necessarily, but just to help you if you are considering helping me, my old riding buddy (former track opponents but chilled out now) has bought a 114 Fat bob 🤔🥴

    Don't forget about a 2 inch tank lift. The Miles Range on the bike is not accurate. Suppose to be a 4.9 gallon tank and filling it when the gas light comes on, you fill about 2.8 gallons. Could either ignore it and run on LO RNG for a little or get the lift for the accuracy. Going to be my next buy for my 2013 SB.

    When buying street bob, you need to add better seat for rider, passenger seat and foot pegs, so the low rider looks like a better option, it comes with all those options, plus better brakes, full fender, tachometer and security, right?

    Hi Matt , big fan and great review as always. I am looking to get my first Harley and am torn between the 2017 sportster roadster and the street bob. I love the inverted forks and dual front disks as well as the look of the roadster but at 6,1 I have to put forward controls to make it a little more comfortable for me. The sales guy pitched me the street bob and I do love the way it looks and the fact that it's a bigger bike.Your advice would be greatly helpful.

    Hi Matt,
    Later in this video you mentioned not being able to gel with Sons of Anarchy. I personally really liked that series, but at that point I was, and unfortunately still am a BMW R nine T rider (trying to sell in a timid market at present 😕). I can totally relate to that, as I’ve incrementally moved away from sport & super bikes to naked’s, and now hopefully a Harley. I’d akin your feelings about Sons of Anarchy to a sport bike rider watching the featured sport bikes in fast & Furious. My biggest beef is when you know the bike and the engine sound, and it doesn’t Marty up with the bike: e.g my R nine T was in Mission impossible 6 - Fall out. Apart from when they start the bike, the rest is an inline 4 sound. Bloody jokers 😒

      Why would put an m8 in the dyna? Lol
      Get a S&S 124 evo, it will have the beautiful harley loping sound, its cheaper, simpler, bullet proof, and it will eat twin cams and shit on m8's all day.
      Also m8 sounds like a honda.
