Purchased this to replace a guide pulley czcams.com/users/postUgkxO9seYZjlnuP5UvMkb7osQW3WxPVeSnPk on our John Deere x304 snowblower. As I stated in the title, it is just about perfect. The stock pulley has a spacer at the bottom. I used four washers to emulate said spacer, and it works perfectly now. Great product, and great price especially if compared to typical JD prices.
After cutting & grinding off the bent bolt, I did this fix using JD parts. As another poster indicated, there's a bushing that fits the JD idler. There's also a 10mm bolt & cap lock that is a perfect fit inside the bushing, and is used in other applications of the pulley. Easy replacement with these parts once you get the offending welded bolt cut off the bracket. Parts list: Idler: GY22082. ($13) Bushing: M71682. ($5) M10 Flangelock: 14M7400. ($2) M10x40: 19M7804. ($3) M10 5x30 washer (2): 24M7178. ($1.50)

great video...I had similar problem on my JD mower deck. I used what I had at the time I put a 2" 3/8 bolt in the hole from the welded bolt from underneath with washers and found that lock washers fit where the bushing should be and used 3 of them for the spacer, then topped with another washer, lock washer and nut, so far so good!
Thanks. This happened to our mower the other day and we were stumped as to what to do. My husband just cut the bolt off with a hacksaw. He is having some ice cream as a much deserved reward.
We wound up going a slightly different route. We used four 3/8"id Lock washers and gently tapped them inside the center of the new idler pulley. It made for a snug fit for the 3/8" bolt. The hardest part was getting the nut on the threads as I was trying to do it blind. My husband son got the mower deck reattached to the tractor this afternoon. It is a lot quieter and is cutting much better than before. I'm surprised it cut at all before the pulley flew off as the bearings were completely melted. It's doing great now. Fixed mine today, found a real thick washer and welded it to the shaft and to the bracket to make the whole thing one, as it had bent a few times before. heavy duty now!
I did a similar fix for another JD deck. Except I replaced the fuel hose with an 11mm (1/2" drive) socket. Fitted perfectly to the bearing and provided the height off the bracket. If you haven't got an old socket they can be bought loose for about $1.

Thanks for this. A friend of mine had this exact failure on his l110 mower deck. He asked me to help him fix it and everyone was saying it couldn't be done as I was saying it could. This shut them up.
To replicate the tower stud, cut it off without damaging the bracket. Then get JD Part# M71682 bushing (as another poster said), Metric Bolt Grade 8.8 M10x1.50 2 1/2 inches long and a locking nut to fit the bolt. Maybe a washer or two. The bushing can be obtained at your local JD dealership for about $4. The nut, washers and bolt can be had at any good hardware store or just get them when you get the bushing.
I appreciate this video, very resourceful fix, but I would be concerned that the rubber hose "bushing" may break down under the belt induced forces and harsh environment. Would be interesting to know how it held up. No worries with a metal bushing, thanks for the part number.
I appreciate this useful post with the parts list. My bolt sheared off and so I cut the rest of the bolt off with my angle grinder. It was an easy fix after sourcing the parts from the local JD dealer. I could have gotten the nuts and bolts from the Depot for cheaper,but that pulley hub versus using washers just made it simpler to order everything from the JD website.
I did something very similar but I used a grade 8 5/8" bolt It fit almost snug to the inside of the bearing and I used JB Weld to fill the 1/32" gap So that the bearings spun freely.
I fixed mine in a similar way, I used some bearing and steel spacers with some washers and I got the deck to work great. this video helped ALOT!! thank you. John Deere will tell you you may need a new deck for 600$+ DO NOT BUY THE NEW DECK

thats exactly what I have in front of me! My bolt is spinning so I cant get the nut off. I tried double nutting so I could hold the spinning bolt but there isnt enough length. How did you make out with your repair?
bolt was loose, pry bar or large screwdriver to bend frame back, used epoxy mix, which I put into and around loose bolt using JBweld , put 1 thicker washer down onto weld more weld and guide back on , still using it, quick fix until I can weld it, let sit for a day and it is solid.
My idler looks " cocked up" musta got bent somehow, I suppose the bolt bent. I'm cleaning / fixing up mower now. I'll keep this in mind for sure. Thanks
Mine too. My efforts with going from the top down approach didn't workout so well. I'm not sure if these bearings are supposed to be squeezed this way. Some are sensitive to the side pressure is on. I wonder how this has worked out for him using the hose. Mine was red hot in the very center inside race.
Thanks for this. I've not yet applied the fix. I have to get the motivation to go out and get the parts. I foolishly believed that John Deere wouldn't have welded the bolt on. It's an idler pulley that would have a shear force on it, so I naturally assumed that such a thing would be easily replaceable. I guess that's why I'm not an engineer.
That same pulley on mine is leaning forward a little so it's not perpendicular. I have a vibration in the deck when I engage the blades, I'm wondering if that leaning Idler Pulley could cause that? I have replaced both Idler Pulleys and belt, still vibrates. seems worse when deck cutting height is set higher.
Smae thing happened to my la115 but it looks like i caught it in time before the bolt/stud got messed up beyond use. It did wear into it slightly so i'm crossing my fingers it will be ok. if not i will try welding up the wore spot and grinding/filing it back to shape. If all fails i will use the method you came up with or one of the one's shared i the post. I'll know more when the pulley arrives. Thank you for the information. ::SUBBED::
There should be a hole. You may have ground the bottom of the bolt into the bracket. You may be able either pop it out of drill it out. If not, you would need to drill a hole.
Looks like a good rig, I have the LA 110 and it's a pos. Wait till your deck mounts start to crack around the welds on these tinny decks. I should of bought something else these things are cheaply made with china parts.
@@jimy4real666 yeah I welded in aftermarket spindle support rings really helped out with the cracking. The idlers pulley with the perch is pulling out now had to put a bar under the perch to keep it in place.
Thanks I got her figured out and she’s mowing now! This mower had sat up for 2 years, with gas still in the system. So she took a bit of work but she’s running like a dream now.
I see you did this about 9 months ago. I'm curious to know how this held up. My concern is that with the vibrations of running the mower the stop nut may work its way loose. Do you check it before you mow, or has it held tight so far? This is a great alternative to welding or getting the repair kit. Definitely going to save some money if it holds up.

Question to the pulley covers hold the back of the belt from falling off when blade is disengaged? I bought a new belt and testing it keeps coming off. Don't know if I got a bum belt or what.
La145 is the same and uses the same parts as all the 100 series big box store Deere tractors. For this issue, look up part # M71682. Can be found on Amazon for 10$, put a bolt through it and get back to mowing. This is a simple do it your self repair. If your lucky, it will just need the mounting bolt bent back into position and welded. Check out my videos for info on that.
Kade. I bought a bolt at local hardware store. The suggestion of buying the part and welding is good IF you can weld. My fix was for the average handyman.

@@donschlonski2936 You'd be surprised how many people have welders in their garage, or know someone who does. Worse come to it, use two batteries. It is NOT rocket science.

So stupid Question. I have a similar issues the the flat idler shaft on the 48". why not just replace it with a Shoulder bolt....

There should be a hole. You may have ground the bottom of the bolt into the bracket. You may be able either pop it out of drill it out. If not, you would need to drill a hole.

Mine just did that. First the right side gage wheel, then the height adjustment bracket.

I used a dremmel tool but I’m sure a small angle grinder or hacksaw would work as well.

Yeah, the covers and tension should hold it on. You may have gotten too big of a belt. Even disengaged, the belt should have tension.

Don Schlonski carry it down to the muffler shop with part in hand. Pay 10$ bucks and blam. Or get a welder from Home Depot.

The lesson here…….they make a horrible noise in plenty of time to change up before this happens.
How do you remove the original bolt?
i used a small angle grinder. A dremmel or something like that would work.
I used a multi tool with a carbide blade. Took awhile but it worked.
