I have a 115 John Deere riding mower with a 42-inch deck. I bought it used, and it has run for five years with no problem. Recently, the belt broke. I thought it was just old so we put a new belt on. That one broke. We figured out the ball bearings were shot in the center spindle so I put a new pulley/bearing on. I took it to a mower repair and had new blades put on as well. The mower technician made sure the belt was routed correctly. I mowed for 30 minutes and the belt came off again. Really frustrating. I got a self-propelled mower until I can get it to a repair place again.

    Maybe this will help someone:
    1. A flat lawn is like a unicorn, heard it exists but never seen one.
    2. A belt never came off of a deck raised up as high as it goes. For best results keep lowering until you are able to hit a rock, a stump, a branch or a stout ant hill.
    3. Fast and low does not beat high and slow(er)
    4. Don't mow 5 minutes after the rain stops, I'm pretty sure the grass will still be there tomorrow
    5. The front edge of the deck was designed as a bulldozer, if obstructions are encountered, see your CAT D140 x manual
    6. Cut 4 or 5 pieces off of 1.5" or 2" pipe, use blower to clean off drive/garage, lower unattached deck onto pipes, roll out deck to avoid sparks and racket.
    7. Use blower to clean of deck EVERY TIME as soon as you finish mowing, OR wait until next week and chip off crap with an available phillips head screw driver.
These are kinda pick and choose suggestions. Good Luck.

"Don't crowd it" that's the best advice. Bogging the blades will really heat that belt up so it stretches and cooks, especially cheap belts.

Great video, explaining in detail what not to do when replacing the deck-drive belt. Since you had to drop the linkage on the one side to enable your tools, would it not have been more productive to drop the whole mower deck out from underneath, slide it out to do the work? It sure would have made the viewer's view of this repair better. Would have only taken 4 extra minutes to drop/drag the deck out from underneath. A good video, though...thanks!

  • @matthijsverweijmeren6114

We had issue with a Simplicity mower Lancer 4416. Found out that the deck pulleys were to wide for the 1/2" belt so it would slip itself to death with some load on it. Eventually swapped this wider pulley out for the narrower pulley(same diameter) on top of the center drive spindle which has a 1/2" belt to the PTO. Upgraded the PTO to deck belt indeed with a 5/8" belt instead of the 1/2". Works like a charm now. Apparently the initial setup was original but I could not figure out why it was put on like that. The belt was way to deep in the pulley(which I measured 5/8"). So had to be a kind of mower detective😂

Awesome video...thanks Jeremy. I just loosen the pulleys enough to slip the belt in between the guides and the pulleys, not take the pulleys off. In the case of the pulley with 3 guides, I was gratified to see the way you took off that one pulley with the three guides. I replaced the blade drive belt and it appears to be properly routed but I'm getting what feels and sounds like an engine surge issue. I thought it might be the result of the belt being stored in a loop, however, I cut my lawn, and that didn't go away although it seemed to diminish slightly. I wonder if the belt isn't rubbing on one of the, for lack of better terminology, belt pole guides. There is a very small gap specified on the right-hand blade pully.

I was surprised you did not at least blow that dirty deck off with some pressured air and a quick wipe down with an old oil rag. Also, while already there why not shoot a few pumps of grease in those grease fittings? I don't look at it as time or money, more like quality service to the customer that stands out over the competition. Take care.

6:10 107cm is just the metric measure for 42", the deck width. Instead of the OEM John Deere part, I found a 4L1030 ( ½" x 103" ) standard V-belt from A&I is a lot cheaper and works just as well. The OEM odd-size is only a fraction of an inch longer.

sometimes you can use a piece of pipe that's just large enough diameter to fit over deck belt guides , to gain enough clearance to install belt without loosening anything . careful not to use too much force and bend the guide .

That shroud is causing the outside of the belt to wear... look inside it.
Or you don't have it tight enough (tension spring) and it is slapping the outside of the belt against something.
