  • This engine surprised me. I failed to mention that it has a crankshaft rotary valve instead of reeds and the timing advance is achieved by a rotor mounted under the flywheel with centrifugal weights that fly out at higher rpm, advancing the rotor, and retract with springs at lower rpm. There’s a pickup on the mag plate that the rotor passes to trigger it.
    The squeak at 1:00 is my wet shoe slipping on the floor of the boat as I turned around.

    I really appreciate how you take some of the Outboards that most people as you say look past or Snicker at. It's something I do also and you're right, they do deserve their place in outboard history. That motor surprised me!

      Thanks. I feel like a fool for overlooking so many non mainstream engines over the years. Hopefully one of my videos inspires someone else to enjoy a hidden outboard gem.

    That is a nice motor. I have owned a 3 hp GameFisher for about 25 years now. Great engines.

    Nice running kicker there! I don't have an 18 that will run that well! That motor runs like a 25. Thanks for sharing.

    Never knew tecumseh made a two cylinder engine, must less a water cooled two cylinder... It does scoot along smartly for sure

    Where did you find those modules ? And part numbers if you have them . I’m looking for them now.

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 9 měsíci +1

      The service manual actually shows three different generations of those modules. Two of them used the same flywheel, the third used a different flywheel. Some had two modules two coils, others had two modules one coil, and they put colored stickers on some of the modules to ID them. I don’t have a parts book. I went by that ID method to find new ones on eBay. I do have one good module left.

    Hey GearHeadJP. Just picked up one of these… very similar. The guy who sold it too me claimed it was a 9.9hp. (There’s no stickers on it now besides the plate on the inside). The inside says around 15hp at 5500RPM not sure if it’s a 15 or a 9.9. Anyways was wondering if you have a good parts source for these. We’re planning on getting it started this week. Seems like it will have no issues starting up. I was just wondering if you had any good recommendations or any other good sources for parts and knowledge on these. Thanks

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 3 měsíci

      Parts are tough to find for these. I got a few things from Brazilian Connection and eBay. I still have a good complete power head and propeller if you’re interested. Since this video, I sold this engine, and it wound up in Texas.

  • @1dcas
    @1dcas Před 9 měsíci +1

    Do you recommend replacing cylinder coils when replacing those modules or are they generally ok? And who has these parts?

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 9 měsíci +1

      No need to change the cylinder coils. The only place I’ve seen parts available is on eBay. I may list some soon, as I have extras.

      The issue for me is when checking for spark only one plug fires then 15 minutes or so on the water no spark even with new plugs . Get back home sparks on lower with screw driver the fresh plugs and cranks right up. runs and sounds good no miss. On the water only 7.5 mph . Lol wanting the performance you displayed in this video. I was thinking ignition is bad and only functioning just good enough just before it quits firing . Thanks for your time and responses. Any and all info is greatly appreciated.

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 9 měsíci

      You really need to do voltage output readings on the primary wires going from the modules to the cylinder coils with a peak reading volt meter. It’s too much for me to explain here. Good luck.

    I just picked this motor up in the Eska badge. Paid $20 for it with two- 6 gallon fuel tanks and one hose. Haven't got it home yet to test for spark. If I should need what you spoke of do you have a source? TIA 😊

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Cool engines. The spare module I had wound up in the hands of a club member. The same guy also figured out a way to use pit bike ignition modules to fix these ignitions.

    • @ALVintageOutboards
      @ALVintageOutboards Před 2 měsíci +1

      @GearHeadJP I found the trigger magnet and the plastic piece that holds it and then is actuated by the mechanism up under the flywheel was damaged. I think I have a line on a good used one. It wouldn't turn over for the previous owner and so he thought the powerhead was blown. I took all that off so I could test compression and I have about 120 psi- T&B

    • @ALVintageOutboards
      @ALVintageOutboards Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@GearHeadJPI figured out who it was and we chatted a few times. In the meantime, I found a complete and running 9.9 on Marketplace for $25. Cost me more for gas to go the 102 mile round trip to go get it lol😊. Also, have a trigger magnet coming from one of the outboard group guys so I can put the 9.9 Gamefisher back together. I was shocked at how the 15hp sounded when I got spark back in the test tank! Wow! Can't wait to run it!

    I hear you speak of custom props on some motors as I’m binge watching your channel. Did you put one on this game fisher? If so I’d like one . Just ordered a 8-1/4 12 which is original from what I’ve seen. Lol trying to mimic your performance because mine is ssslow. 7.7 max till I lost my prop last wknd😢😂

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 9 měsíci

      This has an original 12P propeller that I cupped. It sounds like maybe your engine is only running on one cylinder or has some other type of running problem. It should definitely be faster than 7.7mph!

      Your opinion on using the 11 pitch prop on the one I have? It really runs great but I’m sure there’s something measurable off . I’m test riding in a 14 tri hull full fishing gear and two people which I didn’t mention. Not expecting 26 like you but I’m thinking 18 mph should be doable . On my quest I bump into you everywhere lol . The eska group on Facebook and recently eBay with this engine posted on there. but hey will an 11 help me or no? Your opinion is valuable

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 7 měsíci

      The 11P would certainly help, but honestly I wouldn’t expect much from a 14’ trihull with that load. Although these engines seem to have decent peak hp, at high rpm’s, they don’t have much torque.

      Briggs did this back in '03-'05 and they didn't sell well because they're pieces of shit. I have one on the bench right now for a customer and it's probably the biggest wet fart of an outboard I've ever seen. My wife came out to the shop the other day, saw it, and said, "That is the most ghetto outboard I've ever seen." She's not wrong. There's no rubber vibration mitigation anywhere, so that big 'ole no-balance-shaft-having thumper's gonna rattle your arm off at the shoulder. When I fired it up, it rattled my bench like a paint mixer. Also, you get to sit next to that loud pile of crap all day long. Go fire up your lawn mower and sit next to it for 20 minutes. You wanna listen to that on your boat? lol...
      On the technical end of things, the main problem you have with rednecking a mower engine on an outboard leg is that the lower unit gear ratio is too low. Small outboards have ratios in the 2:1 to 2.5:1 range because they have power heads that run 5000-6500 RPM (or 7000 on those little OMC 9.9/15 HP rippers for a few years). Throw an engine on there that's governed at 3600 and it basically ends up being half as fast as what it'd be with the original powerhead. The ratio on the Briggs I have in the shop has a 1.5:1 ratio to make up for the lack of RPM and it has some weird proprietary prop of unknown pitch. You want a cheap four stroke? Those blue Hondas from the 80's are a dime a dozen. They'll outlast the heat death of the universe and are absolute jewels of simple engineering.

    Where can i get coils for it

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 19 dny

      The coils are probably fine. The modules fail. Join the Eska outboard Facebook group. There’s tons of info about the ignitions.

  • @1dcas
    @1dcas Před 9 měsíci +1

    I see one on eBay looks the same but mine is a 78 and this one is for 80 to 85 . Your opinion please . I see you mess with many vintage outboards and make these decisions often

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 9 měsíci

      If it uses the same flywheel and has the same number of coils on the module plate, chances are that it’s the same.

  • @usedtruckemporiumusedtruck4166

    Why dont you run an airfilter

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Outboards typically don’t have air filters. There’s not much dirt flying around out on the water.

  • @RaidifyLifts
    @RaidifyLifts Před 26 dny

    my friend has one. but its a much rarer 9.5 variant. ran great in the barrel in all gears, got it out on the lake and it ran great until we tested reverse. reverse worked fine but as we went to put it back into forward again it would not go into gear. we had to reverse back to the dock. and that was try one. try two was much worse where it worked well and tested reverse and then all gears wouldnt engage and we had to ore back to shore. piece of crap.

    • @GearHeadJP
      @GearHeadJP  Před 26 dny

      It sounds like it may be a shift rod connection problem.
