For the most part, this channel has been used for the demonstration of what post war small outboards looked and ran like from the perspective and approach of various manufacturers. I appreciate the innovation, variety, marketing, competition, and sometimes gimmicky approach that the companies took in that era. Hopefully this channel displays that and sheds light on some super star models from brands that were over shadowed at the time.
1925 Johnson AB-25 antique outboard AOMCI
What a sweet running engine for its age, and a giant leap in technology and convenience of use at that time. This one resides in its original crate with a glass top on it as a table in my man cave.

Oops. When comparing it to the next model I said 3 cylinder instead of 3 horse power models. What a putts. 😂 Thanks to those that noticed the fuel leak, I wasn’t aware of it. It is fixed now. It was a loose fuel fitting.

This clean original got the usual fuel line and diaphragm replacement, carb rebuild, impeller replacement, gear case reseal, gear oil, coils, condensers and clean up. Someone had hand painted bright orange enamel paint all over the back of the power head and top of the exhaust housing. That took forever to carefully remove without damaging the original paint. This was a real bizarre offering from Evinrude between 1948 and 1951. I feel it was a wry over engineered stepping stone to the 1952 and up Lightwin 3hp. I can’t think of anything that is interchangeable on the two different models other than spark plugs, and for good reason. This 3.3 has dual rubber impellers, a built in fuel level gauge on the tank, a closed deck block, a rotary valve passage...

This little engine surprised me big time. It really runs amazingly and it sounds and feels like it’s got all of its 5hp if not more. I can’t wait to try this little guy out on a boat and maybe do some prop work. It is a single cylinder, loop charged, air cooled engine with a bing carburetor. Update- I tested it on a boat and determined that even though it runs perfect and honestly is a pleasure...

Nice Motor 0 seconds ago hey nice motor. I have question for you. I guy wants me to work his 1955 25 hp Johnson. His say it way low on power. I have never work on a 25hp. I was wondering what compression should be. I checked and its about 88 on both wondering if that the problem before I even start. It runs and has spark in both clys. Reply
Compression gauges vary unfortunately, but your 88psi on BOTH cylinders is sufficient for a good running engine. Did you do it after running to confirm that the head gasket is good? The 25 is really no different than any other twin two stroke. Make sure vitals are good and then work towards pin pointing the problem.
@@GearHeadJP ok thanks
As far as i have been able to find this is the only video on youtube right now of a west bend 16hp engine running, cool stuff man i cant wait to get mine going this is such a uniquely cool engine
The 16hp was only made for one year 1959. It actually didn’t look like this engine I have in the video. It looked like the wedge shaped 18hp I have in another video. I built this one with different cowlings and paint scheme just for fun. It sure goes well and is a lot of fun.
@GearHeadJP im aware of the original shape, ive got one laying right here! Mine is rather stuck tho, it will be awhike untill it runs. But this really is the only 1959 westbend 16horse outboard powerhead thats is actually running on youtube. It may look diffrent but it still purrs all the same. What a great engine and what a cool sound in so glad i found one for myself. This is an awsome outboard you have man i hope it keep running for many more years to come. Once i get better at working on these engines my west bend 16 is gona be my first full restoration, i really want to make it nice. Thanks for having this video, i love this engine and hopefully it bring you much joy for many more years
💪
Can you still find parts for these
Sure, all the service parts are readily available.
Dad had a 16 hp Scott with Bail-o-Matic. Nice motor. Mount bracket broke while on the lake and the motor went overboard. He got a piece of pipe and probed the bottom till he found it. Pulled it up - dried it off - and it ran just fine.
😲
how do you get the flywheel off the clean the point(s)? i just dont want to jack anything up lol. also, do you happen to know what kind of compression numbers i should be looking for? great video thank you!
It’s been too long since I did this one to remember if it had threaded holes in the flywheel to use a bolt type puller on. If it does, I definitely recommend a bolt type puller. If it doesn’t, I would gently apply prying pressure under the flywheel with a pry bar and then hit the crankshaft squarely with a heavy brass hammer with a sacrificial nut on the crank threads. I’m not crazy about the latter method as it stresses the rod journal area of the crank. Do not ever use a jaw type puller as it will most certainly bend the aluminum flywheel. This engine had 50psi compression and the most I’ve heard of one having is 60psi. Keep in mind that these are low compression engines and everyone’s gauge reads a little differently.
@@GearHeadJP sweet thank you, unfortunately there are no bolt holes to speak of. I’m getting 45psi turning the flywheel by hand so seems like I’m ok. Thank you again, and dreading pulling the flywheel lol
Take your time, be gentle. It’ll run!
@GearHeadJP Where could I source a coil for one of these? I have a 1958 West Bend Barracuda 12hp with a cracked coil; I assume it uses the same ignition parts as this Elgin. I know some people swap with universal OMC coils or something like that but I'm not sure with the process or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated! The serial number on my West Bend is S1. Model is 12802
The coils were the same on all of the 12’s that I’ve worked on. I too have converted a couple to the OMC coils and they ran great. However, you really have to pay attention to wire routing so as not to let any one of them be rubbed by the flywheel.
I have the 5 hp version. That thing looks and sounds amazing!
The 5’s are great; light, smooth, and powerful.
I have a question i just got a 1974 sears gamefisher just like the one in your video about 10 months ago the top cylinder has spark and the bottom one doesn't i haven't tested the modules yet but im assuming thats what it is. Im wondering where you found the modules
eBay
having both 1998 johnson 9.9 and 15 hp engines i think cylinder porting varies between the two. the 9.9 handles a heavier load much better, runs smooth thru the mid range. the 15 on the otherhand likes to run top end but tends to stubble thru the no wake zones.
Interesting. I’d say that’s a good argument for intake velocity too given the difference in carburetor sizes.
Had so much fun with one of these on a 14' StarCraft when I was a kid. Run all day on a couple bucks worth of gas.
Nice! It’s such a smooth running engine.
Oh that is SWEET I have never seen the Elgin 9.9 I have only seen the tiny green little Elgins Oh it sounds so good
The Elgins came in many “flavors” depending on who had the contract with Sears at the time. They’ve grown on me.
I have a 1965 16 hp Atwater. Thinking about putting it on Ebay. You know if they worth anything?
Honestly not a whole lot, but it really depends on condition, location, and application of engine for potential buyer.
I’ve never seen a merc in that colour combo before!
That combo is one of my favorites, especially the Marlin Blue.
Are you looking to see the Johnson Seahorse?
😂
Very cool. Nice that you have the Commodore version. Those are not very common since they were only made for three years. I have the 10hp Commodore. Thanks for sharing!!
I’ve grown very fond of the Commodore and Firestone varieties of West Bends.
@@GearHeadJP I like both of those as well as some of the Elgins and the West Bend branded ones. They're nice motors. Well built and uncomplicated. I wish parts were a bit more available.

if your a member of aomci do they require you to put that in the title of any outboard related CZcams video you make?
No. I just try to promote the club any way I can.
Ok
my friend has one. but its a much rarer 9.5 variant. ran great in the barrel in all gears, got it out on the lake and it ran great until we tested reverse. reverse worked fine but as we went to put it back into forward again it would not go into gear. we had to reverse back to the dock. and that was try one. try two was much worse where it worked well and tested reverse and then all gears wouldnt engage and we had to ore back to shore. piece of crap.
It sounds like it may be a shift rod connection problem.
Yeah we fixed it twice and it came loose every time
I believe I just picked up this exact motor from an auction. Looks like someone painted it. Looks exactly like the one in your video. Do you know anyone that restores these? - Any help or info would be much appreciated.
Where are you located?
@@GearHeadJP Ramsey mn
Hmm. I’m all the way on the east coast. There must be someone in your area. Check out the AOMCI.org website.
@@GearHeadJP I will do that. In the event there isn't an Old Head that still restores these. I will be in contact. Thank you very much for the info!
Can you show me how to mix gas and oil. Thank you
This engine runs at 50:1. 50 parts gas to one part oil. So it would be 2.5 liquid ounces of oil for every 1 gallon of gasoline.
Can’t believe how fast she is! Not to mention beautiful 👍
Thank you. It’s a sweetheart for sure.
What length boat was it on when it hit 28.2 mph ?
12’
@@GearHeadJP Thanks. That partially explains the speed. I was thinking it was on a 14'. That sounded too fast for a 10 hp on a 14'. I just picked up a KH7 that I'm going to try to get running. It's not locked up, but the coils are toast. I'm assuming the impeller is too.
Dig into it!
What's the oil to fuel ratio? Old shiny motors are awesome, nothing but metal.
16:1 GAS:OIL
@GearHeadJP that's really not that rich for a motor as old as it is.
It seems that way, but that is the proper mix ratio. The technology changed quickly in the early 20’s.
@GearHeadJP it's a nice little machine to putter around with, that's for sure. I've had a couple of little dinosaurs before. It's feels pretty cool to run them.
Cool. I typically get bored with engines that won’t plain my boat, but this one and a couple of others that can’t just run so darn nice that they’ve become keepers.
That ol'girl purrs like a kitten. Well done sir.
Thank you.
Nicest little that was ever made. Is it weedless
Yes it is a weedless
I have one of those. A-70 I think. I paid $30.00 for it. The handle was gone and someone welded a pipe on it. It wasn't making spark and I couldn't get the flywheel off so I got in through the top of the flywheel and cleaned up the points as best I could and that was it. Started right up.
They seem to be great runners.
Great motors and so well built. They sound so good. Got my 1924 A Model working last year in a barrel. Going to try on my Grumman Sport boat.
Run it!
Great engines indeed. But, they must be mixed at 16:1 because of the plain rod bearings. But, even at 16:1, they don't smoke much when in proper tune
Agreed
Perfect

Great motor,i have a 1960 3horse👍
This engine was a pleasant surprise to run. You can’t go wrong with your 1960 3hp.
Really sucks BRP stopped making Evinrudes. They used the COVID pandemic as an excuse to stop production. And, they didn't go where the market was and is: 4 strokes.
I think the writing was on the wall way before Covid hit unfortunately.
Nice! What are all the levers/knobs on the front for?
The two far left and far right are to release the cover. The second from left larger one is for shifting. The smaller left knob is for the light, and the second from right small knob is the choke.
is the motor leaking oil?
You’re the second or third person that commented on that. I hadn’t noticed it at the time, but it had a fuel drip because of a loose fuel fitting. I just fixed it. Thank you for noticing it.
Don’t see a water stream…air cooled?
It’s liquid cooled and the “tell tale” stream is very low and straight out the back of the mid section.
That's a sexy motor. My introduction to small outboards was when I was 5 years old, back in 1963. My father took over operation of a marina on a freshwater lake in NC. We rented fishing boats and motors. My first experience driving a boat was with a 3 hp Evinrude that looked very similar to this one. I'm not sure what model it was, but I used it throughout my entire childhood. I was introduced to many outboards over the years. I was excited every spring as the fishing season started. I couldn't wait to see who would show up with a new outboard and to check them out. I can remember when a 100hp to 150hp outboard was about the size of a 300hp nowadays.
Times have certainly changed, but my heart and memories in this industry are still with the small engines.
That's a beauty
Thanks!
What a nice motor!!!! Thanks for the video!
She’s a cutie.
Looks just like my brother's motor. Carb got plugged up and just took it into the shop. Suspect ethanol gas w/o Stabil, and/or Chinese fuel line on his new gas can. I hear the fuel line liner disintegrates and plugs up the carb. I told him to make sure he's using non-ethanol high test gas, proper 50:1 mix + Stabil and swap to rubber fuel line and a new squeeze bulb. Cheaper than another carb rebuild.
Unfortunately it seems like the #1 problem with marine engines is fuel related.
I had one of those old timers. Mine was a '48, strange carb for sure! Strange way that the plug wires wind up under the flywheel also. I did not know they made these in 1951. I have a '52 that is the newer style. You have it running great. Thanks for sharing!
Thank YOU for sharing in our hobby.
Small twins so nice smooth motors. Excellent 👍 thank you
You betcha.
Great to see running nicely on the water and love that wooden transom extension. Looks like a vintage accessory for kicker motors you clamp on. My 3.3 Sportwin beckons but must wait its turn. Cheers!
It’s a runner indeed. Take your time with yours. I recommend stimulants when addressing the fuel system. 😉
Good advice! Starting with the LU first to replace seals then to the carb and air adjustments. Apparently it was first outboard that used a computer (the size of a room mind you) for the fuel delivery system.
😲
Do these have water pumps?
Yes, two actually if I remember correctly.
Love this

These were not odd in late sixies and early seventies they were all over the lake I lived on. They were lighter, durable and easier to use than the omc and mercury products of the day. These were also rarely in my uncles repair shop. On the lake like the other brands Mc made engines for a variety of companies with different names. One of my favorites was the flying Scott and this white Elgin Chrysler marine also made a variety of engines for different companies Montgomery’s wards sea king sears game fisher ththiervown model another last attempt force before merging that branch with Brunswick mercury. A lot of engines with different names were made by Scott Mcculloch under different brands. These were wonderful engines nothing they had o over mercury and omc they were lighter and more durable speaking on engines to 18 hp range. That were across the lake during fishing openers and the fall walleye season. Nothing quite like those Watery summers.

Can i shave with it or mix drinks ? Cool motor. Salt water marine mechanic since 1976 here... These and so many other cool old motors dissolved like Alka seltzer tablets in salt water here. Sad
I can relate to that comment. We NEVER, saw engines like this in our area. It was OMC land. I now enjoy fixing and running all of these engines that I missed out on back in the day and using them in fresh water.
@@GearHeadJP yeah OMC held up well in salt water. Mercury was horrible until 1980s . Today it's Yamaha Suzuki etc . Nice you saved this motor. Small Chrysler were ok . The big ones were junk we would not work on them in marina on long island new York in 80s Force motors a disaster.
