Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Boot, Follow Up Review, Almost A Year

- Been asked a few times for a follow up review for the Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Boot, so here it is.
Initially I liked the boot (still do) but it soon became apparent that my pair had issues with the toe box area of the boots. I'm fairly certain that I wouldn't have had these issues if I had purchased a 'Wide' version of the boot but at the time I wasn't aware of that option.
Pros for the boot: Light weight, seems to hold up pretty well with heavy use
Cons: Standard option too tight in toe box (for me), lacing could use one more tab for securing boot
I'm actually impressed with how well the boots have held up with rugged use on rough terrain. Like I mentioned, I probably would have had no problem if I had the 'Wide' version of the boot. I used the boots in canyoneering, hiking (of course), and overnight back packing with larger packs. Had no problem with ankle support. Anyway, I'm going back to the Quest 4D Boot!

What sunglasses do you use.?? ...Thanks!!!
Awesome review! My last Asolos had the soles separate after a one year use. Little bit of hiking through that year and they fell apart. Cost, double of the Salomons in this vid. My brother had Salevas. After one summer the soles were rubbed off. So far the Salomons look like one of the very few worth buying.
Thanks from the UK I need a wild fit also so a good tip. Try using shoe trees when not in use to counteract the front curling effect.
Got similar one but in the wide version. Had to go up one size as the side support pattern/webbing was sitting right on the pinky making it uncomfortable. No problems after sizing up with thick socks, though. The hooks at the top made it pretty easy to put on and take off.
Yup, wish I had gone with the wide version....
Just got the wide version in these should’ve just got those in the first place, they fit way better!
I’ve never worn a wide or bought a wide shoe before Also the wides are made in Vietnam, the regular fit are made in India and they have a few things a are made a little different.
very interesting thanks it would explain my problem with Salomon, I bought 4 models now and 2 of them where unwearable, really bad feet destroying while the 2 others are super comfortable no blistering and easy to walk with
X3 has the most durable outsole of the Salomon range!
If you dont mind buying a new boot every season then Quest 4 is plenty of boot
People are really disliking the Salomon X Ultra 4. I'm a Contragrip fan, so I may get a pair anyway.
Thanks for the review, very helpful! If you order the wide would you recommend going true to size or half size up still?
I generally go half size larger with my hiking boots to prevent toe slap on long, steep descents.
Just got my pair they are going back ASAP men’s 12.5 apparently I need a wide in this boot! Not sure why because my quest 4d are perfect.
Sucks! I went back to Quest 4D.
It would make a lot more sense to simplify that mid sole design so it doesn't catch edges like that
Great review. How do you think these compare to the Quests? Interested in suitable pack weight, distance, multi day suitability, ankle flexibility and underfoot comfort, thanks for any feedback! Cheers
Well, mine went in the trash because I failed to know that these boots were also offered in 'Wide' sizing...which I should have gone with. My pair were too uncomfortable but they were very light and flexible..more so than the Quests. I love the Quests though...
You should contact Salomon about the parts coming unglued. They have awesome customer service got me a new pair of quest 4d 3 because my others had a glue coming undone they gave me a new pair plus free shipping I was asking what was a good glue I could use too fix that part. So that pair will be serving as one of my work boots.
I got the same pair as this video on the way I hope the fit me? If not they’re being sent back ASAP!
I'll keep that in mind since I just got a new pair of the 4Ds!
How flexible is the front of the shoe? I have an mtp joint problem that gets aggravated if the front is too stiff.
Pretty darn flexible, it's basically a sneaker.
What sunglasses do you use.?? ...Thanks!!!
somethign in me tells you used this shoe, wich is a glorified trial shoe and good at that, as a boot?
Did you go half size up or one size up?
Half size.
Most times if shoes curl its due to sizing incorrectly.
I ordred the low version of this and had to return it, I'm usually 45EU size I ordered two size more than I am and it was way too small more like two sizes smaller so a 4 size difference ! also the toe part of the shoe was way too narrow spike shaped toenails destroyer I don't understand what Salomon did with that model but it's garbage, I have more than a hundred miles of winter moutain hiking with the Salomon OUTblast TS CSWP and I love them, a huge fail from Salomon don't buy
Did these even come in a wide?
When I made this video I was under the impression there was a Wide size available, couldn't say now though.
May I ask whats the width of your feet?
Just under four inches.
I had the same problem as you with the same boots 👎
Yeah, sucks. Moving back to the Quest 4D for me.
My CAT work boots are in way better condition than this after 18 months of daily wear, and I wear them in the bush and wet conditions too. Ugh I'll never find something that will last many years.
Look like shit after a year
