Four Years Riding Japanese Dual Sport Motorcycles - No Regrets
Yes indeed, no regrets here after riding Japanese Dual Sport Motorcycles for last four years!
I got into riding Dual Sports for the exploration, I felt the bikes would get me deeper into the backcountry or into places I wouldn't normally go. And thus far, that's exactly what they have done. Since I purchased my first bike, the Yamaha XT250..it didn't take long for it to multiply and soon I had a handful of bikes. All of which were Japanese: Honda CRF300L, KLR650, and Suzuki DR650. I've enjoyed all of them immensely! None have let me down and every one of them got me back from where it took me.
The key word here is reliability, among a few others. So I really don't have anything bad to say about my experiences on these bikes. The pros definitely outweigh the cons!

Kawasaki KLR650 Or Suzuki DR650 - Which One?

Which one, the KLR650 or the DR650? Well, I own both bikes so I thought I'd make a video about my experiences with both bikes. Given my riding style, both bikes have served me well! From deep desert travel to 300 mile highway days to moto camping. Both bikes handle what I need them to do. Is one bike better than the other? It depends. It really boils down to the individual. I do not feel the same way as you about the DR650 being close the KLR on long highway rides. I rode with a friend on a 5hr one way trip in the West Texas desert. I have a 22 KLR and he had a 2018 DR650 with a larger tank and wind screen. I was very interested in trading for a DR650 so I spent most of the ride on my buddies DR. We road two lane back roads the entire trip going the legal speed limit of 75 mph. Yes backroads in Texas are 75 mph. I really liked the DR650, but it definitely it I’d definitely much more fatiguing to ride at highway speed than the KLR. The wind was exhausting and my neck strain was much more noticeable after a long day in the saddle. I’m very glad I got to test both bikes. I love the DR650 for everything except traveling long miles. Unfortunately I mostly ride long miles in the west Texas at 75 mph. You can watch all the reviews you want but it definitely a good idea to actually test ride the bikes the way you will use them. My buddy has a Gen 1 and a Gen 2 KLR and prefers his DR650 for everything but travel. He is 70 years old and extremely tough. I appreciate your videos very much.

I've ridden the Gen 2 KLR throughout mountains all along the east coast and the carb has never given me a major issue. I've come to enjoy the ease of making minor adjustments and diagnosing issues that would be much more difficult to tackle with throttle mapping. However, if you don't ride the bike on a frequent bases there are definite advantages with fuel injection.

My first bike was a used 1974 Suzuki GT250 street bike I had just got my learners permit in 1977 I was 15 1/2 per the California DMV rules, I had been saving for a car working as a paperboy with the Orange County Register mowing lawns and selling flower on Friday night and weekends on local intersection. This bike was a trade in at my local Suzuki dealer. Paid a whole $600 for that beauty. Stuck with the Japanese brands till 2010, I was ready for some 1000 + mile trips with 99% street routes planned, that's when I purchased a used 2004 BMW R1150 GSA one owner low mile black with yellow seat came on the craigs list had to have it. I've had three total Beemers since they are amazing bikes IMHO. But I will always have a Japanese dual sport for my dirt trail riding pleasure.

I've had an XT250 for 7 years, and for my height -- 5'6" -- the bike fits me perfectly. I sat on the Honda CRF300L at a dealership the other day bc I was thinking of getting a 2nd bike and the 300L is a great-looking dual sport with a 6th gear, but on level ground I have to shift my body and the bike to the left in order to get my left foot on the ground -- and that just barely. I can't flat foot this bike with both feet when I come to a stop. I have complete confidence taking the XT offroad and going up hills. I'd be very hesitant to go offroad with the Honda. I have no doubt I'd be dropping it a lot. It's something to consider when choosing between the XT and the 300L if you are under 6 foot in height.

Iv had them all, also. DRZ, WRF, KDX, KLX {3, lol}, CRFX, CRFL. Whatever suited my riding style at current moment and location. Was in the desert for 8 years, loved it. Now back home North Coast Great Lakes...the only one I havent had yet is the KLR. Heading to get a '24 in that matte blue tomorrow. Kawi has always been my favorite and them offering $1k off right now was too much to pass. Long solo trips in the desert needed a lighter bike and made me a great enduro rider. But the millions of miles of logging roads here are calling my name. And its been since '16 since I did any ADV trips so time to start over.

My KLR fits my needs, I can hit the dirt, while still riding with friends when they want to cruise on the highway on their street bikes. Definitely would not single track it, not my skill set. I love how versatile and fun the XT250 is, but sometimes I wish it had a little more power so I would feel more comfortable riding it on the freeway and back country roads. Have you ever considered the DRZ400 since it technically has a better suspension than the DR650 out of the box? I like the DR650, but its easier to get a DRZ400 than a DR650 in my area. Regards,

I could’ve saved lots of money going with a KLR, but instead I went with the DR and added a lot of the comfort and range options. I went with the DR ultimately because of that slight chance that I could find myself on a BDR or section of the trans America trail. Looking back, I don’t know that I would give up the maneuverability of the DR. It’s incredibly nimble at its weight.

Royal Enfield's own touring seat makes the seat even better and gives you more scope to move around. Couple of years ago I did 1,700 miles in three days on mine (all asphalt), and a couple of weeks ago did ~40 miles of trail riding on a rented CRF250 then jumped straight back on my Himalayan and rode the 250 miles home (all asphalt but no highway). The 411 is an amazing adventure / do everything bike. It requires some mental adjustment if you're used to big CC machines for sure (my history includes a VFR800, DL1000, TL1000R and sports 600s), but RE got a lot more right than they got wrong. It's not all sunshine and roses; the quality isn't quite up there with more contemporary offerings, I've had a few warranty claims, but I bought it with my eyes open shall we say and I absolutely love it. 80 miles of mixed trail riding last weekend on it, and now I'm commuting on it tomorrow with all the hard luggage that entails. It's a bike that does everything straight out the box. Sometimes I miss the big CC thrills, not gonna lie, but this unassuming little bike does everything I need it to do very well indeed.

I'm 73 and owned more bikes than u can count. I'm on my 5th TW. One of my most favourite multi use bikes. I have done a sprocket change to drop my RPM a little bit. Progressive front Springs, a pipe, Aftermarkets skid plate, change jetting on the carb. But at my age and a replaced knee, I think the bike is beating me up because of no suspension to speak of and the steering feels heavy. I live in western Canada and ride forestry roads and other terrain that has lots of rocks that are not forgiving. I am really wearing myself out trying to keep it on the road. But I do love the soft dirt trails. I am fixing up a Yamaha IT 175 because I will gain about 12 inches of travel and the bike will be lighter so we'll see how that goes.
