- If you're looking for a new mountain bike fork for better performance on the trail, you might notice that the top-tier options are quite expensive with most over $1,000. However, there are many options in the "mid-tier" price range with a much lower price tag that still provide excellent performance on the trail. Sure, these price tags will be higher than the cheapest forks on the market, but the performance will be much better and actually comparable to the high-end models.
In this video, Tor shares our top 3 favorite budget performance mountain bike forks for trail, all-mountain, and enduro/freeride riding. These are the Marzocchi Bomber Z2, the Marzocchi Bomber Z1, and the RockShox Domain.

*_If you didn't want to spend $1,000+ but wanted great performance, which fork would you buy?_*
im still running a 180mm bomber 66
Used Manitou Mezzer
Z1… er wait that’s what I bought not what I want to buy. I will say I like my z1 over the lyric I bought a couple years prior. But I’m a fan of the old marz z1 as well.
Well my coment comes in a little bit late ;-) but I ride two of them, a 100mm (came as 140mm on my Trailbike) Z2 on my Scott Scale and a RS Domain, upgraded to charger 2.1 on my Orbea Occam... Love them both but the Z2 on my XC (not race but fun) really suits that bike!!!! 🙂
I see you mentioned that the Domain is upgradable via the Charger 2.1 rc2 damper. The Z1 is also. Not only can you upgrade to the Grip2 damper, but you can buy a full Z1 Coil upgrade kit too. The Z1 Coil is an amazing fork and about the same weight as the Domain.
I don't think fox likes the z1 grip2 upgrade being mentioned. Could be wrong but feels that way.
You should include SR Suntour Durolux
Domain definitivamente para enduro from México 🔥👌🏼
I’ve got the coil Z1 180 love um 👍🇬🇧
I appreciate this Video Brother, because I just purchased a Domain today for an upgrade on my Bike........🤝🏾🇺🇸💪🏾👍🏾
How is the new domain set up
@@goingfarwebb26 It's doing just fine, and a True Heavy HITTER.......🤝🏾🇺🇸💪🏾🫡
I'd take the Z1 used
I have the Marzocchi Z1 and added the Fox 36 Grip 2 damper to make it really sweet ... its a great fork for the $$
Rad! Love the Foxzocchi stuff 🙂
-Mike
the Revelation is way better then the Z2 imo. the Z1 is a lot of bang for the buck, love mine!
That's a great fork, too! The 35mm chassis will most likely be a little stiffer than the Z2, but there's just something we like about the Rail damper a little more than the Motion Control. Both are great options with pro's and con's!
-Mike
Same I have Z1 coil and I can't see myself moving away from it
Id like to see a Manitou in the mix. They used to be really popular decades ago. Would like to see how they do now.
Manitou makes arguably the best forks on the market. Cane Creek the best shocks
Is there any difference between Fit 4 and Fit Grip? Looking for a budget enduro fork for my hardtail and didn't notice much difference between bomber Z1 and fox 34 performance 😂
I’m more of the Rockshock Judy vs Suntour Epixion budget fork
Hello and thanx for this great video. I have a question. The new charger 3 damper is compatible with the old Zeb. The old Zeb was running the charger 2.1 damper which is also compatible with the Domain. Does this make the Domain also compatible with the new charger 3 as well? If not, why not?
I cannot argue with your logic! On RockShox's website it looks like they're not compatible with each other but maybe we should try it out at the shop and see what happens! Stay tuned... - Tor
Love my z2 on my Ragley Bigwig!
Heck yeah. Awesome fork for hardtails!
-Mike
My 140mm hardtail has a Z2. It has been flawless through the first year. As a lightweight rider, I'd probably take a Z1 at 160mm of travel.
Awesome! Nothing but positive feedback with those on the Z2. If you have a bike that uses a 140mm fork, be careful increasing the travel any more than +10mm as the bike's geometry starts to get a little wonky any more than that.
-Mike
@@TheLostCo Lol when I first got into mountain biking I my bike had an 80mm Suntour XCT. I bought a 120mm Rockshox Recon and it felt like a totally different bike. Much better for descending but climbing was really wonky. I'll never overfork a bike by 40mm ever again lol.
I have the Z2 in black on my bike but I would love to over fork and go with a red Z1. Would be sick for my colour scheme and I love the simple set it and forget it of the Marzocchi forks
Yes man I'm about to get my hands on a Z1 too and couldn't be more fired up!
-Tor
the domain 160mm is on sale right now for $250 which is crazy. i want to get it but honestly, it's way more fork then i need not to mention I think my frame would be pretty overforked.
Have the RS Domain 170mm on my dartmoor hornet hardtail, i like it more than my fox 38 that i have on my enduro bike
Awesome to know! We have a Domain that floats around that shop that somehow makes it onto everybody's bike randomly and everyone agrees, it's an amazing fork, ESPECIALLY because of the price!
-MIke
I'm kinda curious. Has anyone here tested the SR Suntour Durolux? It's a pretty decent fork for thr price...
Re-upload? I'm having deja vu right now.
I've been a pretty big fan of my marzocchi bomber z2.
It is! We realized pretty quickly after posting it on Monday that we had an editing error and wanted to fix that so we took it down to fix it.
-Mike
Ohlins review plz
I would appreciate a comparison between a Domain and one of the lower-end Zebs. They are actually the same price for me
Go with the zeb. It's lighter, and has a better damper. (moco vs charger)
Got a video for that 🙂 czcams.com/video/67pu3jG1oNo/video.html

is 120mm travel considered an XC bike?
I need an honest opinion…which fork is better?? The Z1 or the Domain??
Domain
Is the Z2 enough for a heavy 220-pound rider out of the box? A friend would like to know 😁
Yes, but no matter what fork you get you'll need to adjust the air pressure inside to match the riders weight.
Im new in commencal community & I dont know about charger or grip. I just want to upgrade my rockshox 35 gold rl on my commencal meta ht. Im not aggressive rider. I just want my bike to be xc/trail. Im looking for pike or lyrik with 140-150mm travel with not so expensive. any recommendations? Thanks a lot. cheers.
Howdy! Please call or email us and we'll walk through all of the options available to best suit you, your riding style and budget.

What about those mantou forks
Ok sooo essentially a Marzocchi is a less expensive Fox shock?
I was about to buy a Z2 until a friend who owns one said z2 have bushing issues which will required the replacement of the entire lower leg as bushings seems to be fixed or welded on it.
Say what? You mean I can't just buy some $5 DU Bushings and replace them in an hour anymore? No longer made in Italy right?
The Bomber Z2 uses a lower leg assembly with non-removable bushings. This helps keep the fork affordable and simple. There are a very small amount of these forks with a bushing issue from the factory, but it's covered under warranty and such a small amount that there's no need to worry about it. All products out there have some issues in small quantities 🙂
-Mike
This is different from a DU bushing from a rear shock. This person is referring to the fork lower leg bushings. These generally last a VERY LONG time and rarely ever need to be replaced as a "wear and tear" item, and when it does need to be fixed, it requires some very special tools to remove and reinstall them. Marzocchi has been owned, manufactured and supported by Fox for several years.
-Mike
@@TheLostCo From what secret player is saying they are different now. But every regular MTB/MX fork use "guide" bushings which are just DU bushes, some have slots in them.
But the fork companies just use off the shelf sizes that my local bearing shop sells. They're hardened steel, copper coated with a Teflon PTFE inner liner. Cheap as chips to replace.
Surely someone has looked up the new bombers service manual? I stopped supporting marzocchi when they removed ALL service manuals from their website. When they force us to pirate documents just to find out recommended oil setups of products they used to sell 10 years ago.
I just ordered a couple of liters of Maxima light/heavy fluid from you guys to keep my '23 Pike Ultimate feeling like butter!
Thanks for the order! Stoked the new oil has the fork feeling smoooooth 🙂
-Mike
Why no one talks about DVO forks?
Hell yah.....fire truck red!
🚒
What about cane creek helm mk2
Hey Joil! Thanks for pointing out the Helm! Unfortunately we haven't gotten a chance to try it here at the shop, but they look like sweet forks! Also it looks like it's a bit pricier than the forks we covered in this video, and we wanted to keep the commas out of the price tags for this one. -Tor
Is this a re-upload?
It is! We realized pretty quickly after posting it on Monday that we had an editing error and wanted to fix that so we took it down to fix it.
-Mike
My friend just got a Domain for £375 bargin really
Am I the only one who saw this dude & instantly thought of Chucky from Child's Play? 😂
@BossMan i can't get used to your short hair!!! It so weird, you look sooo young like that xD
Haha I need to make a video about my monthly savings on shampoo after going to short hair 😂
-Mike
@@TheLostCo lmao DO IT i dare you!!! lol
Z2 < Domain < Z1, domain is held back by its compression damping which is good awfull…
I’m on a RockShox SID SL Ultimate. Seems XC forks don’t get much attention.
Those are great forks! We just live in a more mountainous area, and the style of riding we do here is more downhill focused. Our XC is just pedaling up the hill to have fun going down 🙂
-Mike
I went with a Z1 coil on my Dengfu e22. Over 20 x STRAVA KOMs and counting.
EDIT : Just checked, currently 43 x STRAVA eMTB KOMs.
I hate to be negative because you guys seem cool and make good videos but none of these are under $500. Thats not budget. Most people don't want to spend that much on an entire bike
To be fair, they are pitching these as budget 'performance' forks - you're not going to get a 36 or 38mm chassis for less than $500.
True
Thanks for the feedback!
As the person said above, these are not recommendations for those just looking for the cheapest fork that will hold your front wheel. These are our favorite forks that offer performance that is comparable to the top-tier models but for less money.
-Mike
You have to understand, though, that below that $500 threshold, there is a marginal gap in performance and adjustability that you cannot call those super cheap forks "performance".
That being said, everyone knows by now that the only 3 below $500 forks that one should consider for a budget build are the SR Suntour Epixon, Manitou Markhor, and the Rockshox Judy. That's all.
Budget does NOT = cheap
The same as Diet does NOT = lose weight food.
Both are just stating there is a goal or boundary but the goal could be anything aka "I have a $10000 budget"
