  • HOBBLING AND LEG RESTRAINTS (PART 5 of 6)
Today's episode is the fourth episode concerning the topic of hobbling and leg restraints. Travis talks about the "whys" of the 3 way hobble. Remember this is the next stage after teaching a horse to yield side line hobble. The horse/mule should be great at leading by a rope, with all four legs before starting the one leg hobble. Once horse/mule is comfortable with one leg hobble and able to balance on all three legs, you can move to the sideline hobble. Stay tuned into this channel for many more episodes (three way hobble) covering each piece of hobbling and leg restraint gear and expedient variations of getting the job done!

Great tutorial on restraint process Travis! Love it!!Every horse everywhere needs this in his education. Every horse living on my place learns to stand and submit legs with the rarey strap, side line, three way, scotch, and diagonal line and in any combination. All introduced methodically and thoughtfully as you do here.

Love the 3 leg hobble. This is coming from a gal that had a horse that could outrun me with his front hobbles on lol. Found that out the hard way camping where we couldn't highline lol.

Have a mare which has started being very aggressive to a herd mate after a new move. I think hobbling is the answer but not sure how to proceed?

The sideline hobbles work great for this. As long as you teach your horse to properly handle the sideline hobbles. For environment factors, I would also make sure that no hazards are on the ground that your horse can get caught on. I have in the past placed the sideline hobbles on the aggressive horse inside the round pen with the herd mate. This was after I trained the horse to accept the sideline hobbles. She learned real quick that she couldn't move really fast and was not effective in kicking or lunging after the gelding. She couldn't be a "shark". After awhile she learned to deal with having a herd mate. Every time she would turn back into being a shark, I would apply the sideline hobbles. Some more key points. Make sure that you watch my other videos on hobbling such as how to teach a horse to lead with all four feet before the use of the sideline hobbles. Also never leave the horses alone in the beginning when the sideline is in use. I hope this helps you out and best of luck. Cheers- Travis
