  • HOBBLING AND LEG RESTRAINTS (PART 4 of 6)
Today's episode is the fourth episode concerning the topic of hobbling and leg restraints. Travis talks about the "whys" of the sideline hobble. Also, covered is the simple way to tie a sideline hobble with a single piece of rope. Remember this is the third stage after teaching a horse to yield all four legs using a catch rope. The horse/mule should be great at leading by a rope, with all four legs before starting the one leg hobble. Once horse/mule is comfortable with one leg hobble and able to balance on all three legs, you can move to the sideline hobble. Stay tuned into this channel for many more episodes (three way hobble) covering each piece of hobbling and leg restraint gear and expedient variations of getting the job done!

You mention you prefer these since they can bunny hop and move fast in front hobbles. I thought the same once, till I packed a welsh pony who learned to pace within 3 minutes of wearing a set of these. He could cover a great deal of country equally wearing sidelines, front or diagonal hobbles. Equally sure footed up and down steep hills with hobbles on, at speed. A frustrating pony who was best tied on a picket line, not hobbled! Also knew a horse who was proficient at jumping wire fences with front hobbles.
Was there a second video in this series, or were there only 3 videos as the title of the first one suggests (1 of 3)? The fact that part 3 of 4 and part 4 of 4 are titles indicates they are either mislabeled or there is a video missing?

Howdy Barbara, You can get these from Clinton Anderson's website or you can make your own by single leg cuffs from buckaroo business and a tie them together with a cotton rope. I have another video demonstrating how to make these. I hope this helps you out. Cheers- Travis

Would you use these for a horse that is a chronic rearer when tied?
Horse will tie fine when near others but on her own she has learnt to rear to get out of tying up as she becomes a danger to herself getting legs in fences etc. Thankyou

Howdy, for a chronic rearer you can sure try it. I normally use different techniques to teach a horse to not rear when tied. A good chance that the three way hobble to addition being tied will help. But you need to go through all the proper steps of getting your horse comfortable with hobbling before tying your horse up with them on. The video of hobbling is a 6 part series. The end goal should have your horse tied with a regular set of hobbles on. I hope this helps you on your quest and best of luck. Cheers - Travis
