Q&A With Clinton Anderson: Horse Kicks Out at Other Horses

  • Question: I have a horse that whenever you are riding her and another horse comes too close to her, she will kick out. Is there anything that can be done to correct this behavior? It doesn't matter if it's her pasture mates coming close to her or not. Most people where I live don't know the different meanings of ribbons in a horse’s tail.

This is why i follow Clinton, no gray area, straight forward, black or white, no gray area. Thank you for everything you do for the horse community.

I have to say that i enjoy these Q and A videos you are doing. They are no non sense. Tell it like it is. I love that and wish more horse trainers did the same.

I just saw a post from a friend asking for prayers for a friends child who was kicked in the head by a horse. The young boy is in critical condition. I don’t know the circumstances surrounding the incident. All I know is you nailed it! It only takes 1 time for that bad behaviour to be catastrophic. I’m still learning as a horse owner but safety and horse behaviour is a top priority for me. Don’t let your love for your horse cloud things. You are their herd leader/parent. Be a good one. Make then a good partner. I love the 3 sec rule.

Been following your material for years! I love the brutal honesty to horse training, that most trainers are scared to address you are bringing! Keep up the good work

John Lyons' 3 second rule. One of the best lessons I've heard. Train the horse to stay still with a rope under its tail.

We Americans will gladly keep Mr. Anderson!! I not only learn a lot by listening to what he says, but laugh quite a bit at how he words it! This particular video, his responses had me laughing so hard, I woke up the dog lol!! Hope he doesn't change a thing - and honestly, I don't see him changing a damn thing thankfully!!
Worried about your "child" hearing bad language? Hello, BE A PARENT and don't allow them to watch things outside of your comfort zone or what you consider "morally" objectionable. That's YOUR responsibility, not anyone else's and certainly not Clinton Anderson's.
Only thing I'm upset about is, from the time it was announced in his newsletter, I'd been looking forward to going to Denver at the end of July for his Walkabout Tour and learning as much as I can as a spectator. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm not going to be able to make it. Hoping they'll share some highlights from it on CZcams though!

I've been kicked 18 years ago in the left knee, and I'm still in pain from it... thankfully I know how to climb on the Off side... totally agree with this!!!

Thank You for answering this question. You made a lot of excellent points. And the red ribbon bullshit ... My 4H leader made me put one on my horse when I was a kid. I hated it. She never kicked anybody, she was just a crotchety ol' bitch mare with short horse syndrome.
Anyway, love how you express yourself, verbiage and all, so please don't change your style. 😊

Mr. Clinton you and I went to the same school of thoughts. I've taught many people, make your corrects quick, strict, fair and done( no holding on to it). Btw this works for dogs to.

As an Aussie trainer and clinician I can say that every horse and every horse person in Australia is so grateful that the Americans took Anderson off our hands and we all hope he never returns to our shores. A real horse person would figure out why their horse displays aggression and address the cause. But Anderson just wants his horse to fear him for having ill feelings. That's a guaranteed method for never having any type of quality relationship with a horse. Anderson is just interested in slavish obedience and doesn't care one iota about the horse and its needs. He wrecks a lot of good horses. Thank you America.

I watched a video of Warwick Schiller and one of Anderson doing the same thing, training a horse to stand still to be mounted. They basically had the same idea - move the horse's feet so it would decide it was easier to stand still. Warwick did it gently and calmly, no raised voices, no violence, no scaring the horse. Anderson whipped the horse round and round in a tight circle to the point where it reared and went over backwards, in a western saddle. Anderson just laughed about it and said it didn't bother him.
It's baffling to me that this man has a following.

I was a professional farrier for over 30 years and I can 100 percent say that most women should not own horses . The amount of dangerous behaviour they created with their horses and passed it off as oh he’s just frightened or he is young etc etc was alarming when in reality it was undisciplined and running the show . Women could not help but humanise their horse , massages , shampoo jobs , fluffy warm rugs and copious amounts of feed and supplements combined with 45 minutes of silly circles in a paddock to which they say is work all added up to a dangerous situation when a professional farrier turned up to do what should be a simple routine job . Getting underneath these spoilt and misunderstood animals risking my own safety became an issue for me .Way to many women were giving everything a horse really didn’t need and very little of what it did need . When I refused to shoe it they just got some other farrier ( even if he was lousy ) to put his safety on the line . One horse I warned and warned a lady about that she spent her time humanising and making excuses for its behaviour ended up in the death of her daughter .
