  • The 2020 Ford Ranger comes without much changes from it's 2019 model but it can now be had with the FX2 package for 2wd models. Overall, the Ranger is a strong competitor in this class and offers a lot of versatility for a midsize truck. This Ranger XLT is a mid level trim without a ton of options to make this one of the better value and more affordable 2020 Ford Ranger models.

    9,555 miles on my Ranger, and I love the truck. I’m seeing lots of ‘back in my day’ comments about the older Rangers, and yes we all know the Ranger’s legacy; the 2019-2020 model is no exception. It’s a good truck, and I have no doubt that it will serve my family well for many years; much like my 2001 Ranger did!

    I've had 2 Rangers from the past. One I had for 11 years...and the next one 12 years. I hope these stack up. My other 2 Rangers were standard transmission, but I was diagnosed with MS in 2009 so it's gotta be an automatic for me for now on. I always loved the Ranger because it got me what I needed. I never towed anything, but could throw something in the back without having to worry about having something delivered.

    I had a 1995 Ranger, I bought it in 2006, for $3200. It had 79K miles then...
    4cyl., automatic, 2 seat cab, 7 ft. bed, standard 2 wheel drive on the real axle. It did have a ball hitch on the bumper.
    I ran the truck nearly every day, and it had nearly 300K in 2018, when I sold the truckfor $500!
    It was still strong running, didn't smoke or have any odd noises coming from under the hood!
    But I was putting a 100 miles a day on the truck, in my work commute. I knew I needed something newer for that trek. I got a 2011 Escape, 2.5 4 cyl. Automatic with standard 2 wheel drive. "Keep it simple!"
    I still see it go by the house from time to time. They had even installed wood racks!
    The engine was originally built by Mazda! The only real downside I found was having to replace the timing belt. It never went the same way twice!
    Sure there were smaller issues. But what vehicle does not have them?

    Like my ranger still putting it together though still don't think people are crazy when they say the truck is sloppy and bad brakes. Here's a tip factory tires are cheap change them to good ones sloppiness goes away and the braking is better as for fuel mileage, I got 1500 miles on my ranger and 26 mpg. Here is a tip stop going 80 mph and drive it easy and you will get good fuel mileage. Last week I got 30 out of it so a tip don't go over 60. Slow down or leave earlier so you have time.

    I was looking for dirt on the 2.3 turbo or the 10 speed transmission. I’ve found very little in the way of problems. Ford may have a winner here.

    • @louism8217
      @louism8217 Před 3 lety

      @@blammod the Mustang is closer, but not identical. I've owned an Ecoboost Mustang for 2 years and went to the Ranger. Behave reasonably similar, but the Mustang obviously is way faster. The transmission definitely does not behave the same, especially in sport mode. Both are good. All vehicles have issues, and Ford has been using turbos for some time, so they're pretty robust. BTW I drive a lot, has 52000kms on my Mustang, and its worst thimg was the rear brakes, which were ready for the third set. The solid rear rotors seemingly a general Ford issue.

  • @dickiedo136
    @dickiedo136 Před 4 lety

    I'm not a very aggressive driver. Is the turbo always working no matter what speed I'm driving at? If I'm not "exercising " the turbo enough, is that bad for the engine?

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  Před 4 lety

      It varies depending on how much throttle you have and what RPMs the engine is at. Truly with gradual acceleration the turbo will hardly have any pressure and essentially minimal impact on the engine. If you’re not using the turbo it wouldn’t harm the engine but rather actually help it because if reduced pressure. Ultimately the turbo will be active in most scenarios but most daily driving won’t stress it much.

      @mafosa:
      Funny you would say that. Why? In other markets where Ford sells pretty much the same basic Ranger the engine choices are 3.2 liter 5 cylinder turbo diesel which is being phased out for a 2 liter turbo diesel. The 4 cylinder, in road tests, outperforms the 5 cylinder, and sometimes by a noticeable margin.
      My point being that Ford has a pretty good handle on making small engines work. Reliability down the road? I think I would continue to avoid a turbocharged engine for as long as possible so I would be inclined to go with a F150 with a NON-turbo V6.

  • @xnavyro
    @xnavyro Před 5 měsíci

    Wish they came with a V6 or a turbo diesel 4? Love the look, but hate the low engine size? Currently own an ‘04 Ranger & absolutely live it, but I’d rather spend money to get it refurbished than spend huge $$$ for a plastic new Ranger?

    I'm shopping right now with plans to buy in the next month. Ranger and Tacoma are top of the list. What's your opinion on a 2wd Ranger as you showed in this video to a similarly spec'd Sr5 v6 Tacoma? I ask because EVERYTHING i see is comparing FX4 to TRD or TRD Pro which is not my use case.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  Před 3 lety +1

      They’re very similar in a lot of ways. The Ranger powertrain dedinitelt feels like it has more get you and go, but depends if you prefer turbo or naturally aspirated in the Tacoma. The Tacoma front seats can feel cramped depending how tall you are, but for me at 5’9” I’m comfortable in Both trucks lol. Probably best to spend some extended time in each or maybe take each home for a night to get a good feel for them 👍

    I too see a lot of sticker shock in the posts. To be fair, the price is a bit breathtaking to those who purchased Rangers in the past. (I owned two and paid less than 20k for each of them.) But the new Ranger is an evolution in size and capabilities compared to past holders of the name. The "fit and finish" of my 2020 is vastly superior to that of my 2004 Edge and 2011 XLT. My Sport came with fabric upholstery, which I paid my dealer to replace with leather, which in my opinion is an improvement (I hate fabric upholstery.) You can hear and feel the difference by simply closing a door. Both of my earlier Rangers had issues of wind noise through the passenger doors (leaking though the side mirrors (or so the dealership service techs said.) My new Ranger drives as though it has a larger engine than the 4 liter six in my 2011 XLT. The new 10 speed transmission is exceptional. Sure, they cost more, but the extra cost is worth it.

It's also a lot bigger and has a lot more "bells and whistles" than the 2011. I see very little difference between the 2019 and the 2020. All in all, I really like my 2019 Ranger.
