  • For 2021 there is very little changed for the Ford Ranger, but it has some "new" paint colors including this one. Still, the 2021 Ranger offers great practicality, utility, and value for a midsize truck.

I absolutely love my 2020 Ford Ranger. Mine in "mid-level" XLT trim & a Super Cab model with the longer 6 foot bed & the standard non-offroad 4x4. It's finished in attractive metallic lighting blue. I do kind of wish a 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6 was offered, but I do appreciate the economy & power of the 2.3 liter EcoBoost 4 cylinder turbocharged motor. The heavy-duty 10r80 ten speed automatic transmission is also a big plus, very beefy for a "midsized" pickup truck + very versatile with 10 speeds, sport shift as well as a tow/haul mode + manual shift capability. I found it a bit odd that Ford didn't even offer as an option front LED headlights on the XLT model even though great LED tail lights come as standard equipment, lol. I quickly upgraded my Ranger with all LED low/high beam LED headlights as well as LED foglights. I also tinted the headlight lenses blue which matches my trucks blue color & I did yellow foglight tint which really helps cut through the fog. The Laminx tint also helps to protect the plastic light lenses against fogging, hazing or discoloration etc. Being I live in Minnesota I also got upgraded Weathertech custom digital fit floor liners to keep the carpet/floor nice. I do appreciate the nice dual zone automatic climate control as well as the responsive Ford Sync 3 system. The Ford Ranger is also class leading as far as saftey features, but fortunately all of these can be turned off if not wanted. I do sometimes wish for heated seats, but the standard cloth does breathe well & is durable. I know heated cloth seats are offered on some up-level XLT packages as well as heated mirrors. The Ford Ranger is also tops in all gas engine midsized trucks as far as towing at 7,500 pounds. Only the Chevrolet Colorado can beat it out by a few hundred more pounds, but "only" when its equipped with the optional 2.8 liter four cylinder Duramax turbocharged diesel. I also did some "performance" upgrades on my Ranger as the EcoBoost motors respond very well indeed to modifications. I installed a Mishimoto full sealed cold air intake kit with a "dry" non-oiled synthetic cone filter so better protection for the turbocharger & engine and no chances of over-oiling or fouling of sensors. I also put in a Mountune Performance heavy-duty, high performance intercooler for better control of heat. The one major weakness of the turbocharged EcoBoost line is heatsoak. I can attest the Mountune Performance heavy-duty intercooler did its job superbly even in 95-100 degree heat as I could still get wheelspin (without brake-boosting) even in these hot conditions without timing or turbo boost being pulled & the 2.3 still pulled strong! I also added an AWE Tuning 0FG 3 inch stainless steel exhaust system with dual black tips for some added power + that "just right" sound with a deep, throaty idle (for a four cylinder), a nice authoritative sound when on the loud pedal, but literally no drone when cruising. I can't wait to order + install my custom "tunes" from Livernois Motorsports which offer the versatility of custom tunes for 87-93 octane fuel as well as towing/economy/race etc. This will add up to 80 more rear-wheel horsepower & up to 100 lb/ft of low-end torque. My Ford Ranger averages about 22-24 MPG in "mixed" work/daily driving & I've gotten as high as 27.5 MPG with the cruise control set at 70 MPH on the highway. Most owners with "tuned" Rangers report even better MPG numbers with driven conservatively. The worst MPG I've gotten has been 18.5 to 21 MPG during freezing cold -20 degree temps with lots of idle time. I'm overall very pleased, impressed with my Ranger + glad Ford decided on bringing them back! The ride can get a bit "bouncy" on some uneven roads, but I've heard the Fox Suspension leveling kit (offered through Ford) as well as the rear Timbren SES suspension bumpstops drastically improves the ride. My only other complaint is a somewhat long travel & mushy brake pedal, but that's nothing a good set of EBC slotted/cross-drilled performance brake rotors & EBC performance brake pads of choice with upgraded stainless steel brake lines will cure. These Ford Ranger models were offered in the Australian market long before we got them (revised for US specs) in 2019. To me & for my needs this is a near perfect midsized pickup truck! 2 thumbs-up to Ford! Also a good review.

Owned two Tacoma’s in a row over 16 years. Loved the trucks. But looking for a new one my eyes could not leave the silver Lariat Ranger with the chrome package. Interior BLOWS away Tacoma. More room inside too. More power than my Tacoma’s too. Never owned a Ford before but they have come a long way with the Ranger… So many nice options in the Lariat Ranger Too. During a time it’s difficult to get vehicles with the chip shortage. . I stumbled across my Ranger in a Ford show room. Had to buy it that day. Loving it every day !

We stepped down from 2019 250 Lariat to Ranger XLT 2WD and there was a lot of losses but after a 4500 mile roadtrip, the Ranger with the cloth seats was far more comfortable than the 250 seats. The Ranger is a pizza truck compared to the 250 Lariat but it did really well on the long stretches and we had no problem with being able to pass slower vehicles (ecoboost). I’m overall very pleased with our Ranger.

I have a 2021 XLT with blackout package in 2wd and locking rear option. I’ve got 9000 miles so far and really like it. Had a 2018 Canyon that I also liked but the seats were not comfortable. Ranger is much more comfortable. Breaking isn’t as good as the Canyon and build quality isn’t as good as the Canyon (specifically the cheap tin sound when you close the doors on the Ranger. I read a few reviews on CZcams that showed how to add sound deadening materials to the doors. I used Kilmat material and it was easy to do for about $25. Huge improvement! Very disappointed that Ford didn’t take that step to address this. Actually sounds like they eliminated that in the 2021 model year as many 2020 owners said it was not an issue and almost all 2021 owners have noticed this.
I drive a lot of highway miles (70%) and I’m averaging around 25.5 mpg hand calculated. Truck computer is off by about 1-2 mpg on the high side. I have towed with it and it does a great job due to the 10 speed transmission.

The current model is based on an old Ranger T6 platform sold in Australia/Asia/Africa since 2011.
If you can hold off I'd STRONGLY recommend waiting to see what the 2022 model has to offer.
It's going to be based on all-new platform similar to the new (non-Sport) Bronco.
It is slated to feature a WAY better interior, upgraded tech, and the option of the 2.7 Ecoboost V6 for more power, additional payload/towing, etc.
    Great video as always, though.

Great review! I absolutely love my 2021 Shadow Black XLT FX4. I looked at a Lariat and just didn’t care enough about the upgrades to justify the added expense. To each his own. Like others have said, you can still remote start and lock/unlock with the free Ford Pass app. Push button start just isn’t a big deal to me.
What I love about the Ranger: engine is peppy; never have a problem passing or jumping into traffic. Size is perfect for someone that needs a four wheel drive pickup but doesn’t need a full size. I like all the storage under and behind the rear seat, and I have found the lane keeping assist really handy on curvy highway roads. I like the FX4 package which adds different shocks with a terrain selection system and electronic rear locking differential. In my opinion, these are must haves for an off road pickup and much more important than leather seats or push button start. The only thing I don’t like…auto start/stop. Don’t get me wrong…it works well if you’re stopped for a full light cycle. I just hate that it shuts down so quick after coming to a stop and if the traffic light changes right away the engine starts back up right away. I’ve driven other vehicles that you can keep the auto stop from activating with a lighter press of the brake pedal.
Again, great review of a great truck. So far no regrets getting mine.

Wish they would've made push-button start and the B&O sound system both options on the XLT trim. I think it was a big missed opportunity on their part. I understand it may make production easier, but not everybody is going to upgrade to the Lariat just to get certain features, especially if they're forced to pay for other features that they don't want. It may just turn them off to the car altogether, especially if they can find the desired features in another car from another manufacturer. The more configurable you make a car, the more likely you are to sell one. Options sell cars.

      @macneoh7418 Před 2 lety +1

Well said!: the Bronco Sport suspension is definitely not very comfortable. Not necessarily the worst, but pretty dismal. The fact that the Ranger matches that comfort speaks well for the Ranger, considering it should ride less comfortably.

Good mpg 8k miles so far. Loud and wind noise is bad thumping if you don’t get rear sliding glass window. Check engine light at 5k fuel level sensor so I can’t tell my mpg as it always shows empty. Russ Milne Dealer wants to keep vehicle for days to fix. Bluetooth disconnects occasionally. Not a bad truck but not an exciting one either. That’s my review so far.

I was looking at the Bronco Sport, Edge, Corsair but I really like the Ranger. I want to see what 2022 will look like. I'm also a bit curious about the ugly little Maverick, I hear it will have a great gas mileage. I'm basically looking for a commuter car/truck with a decent fuel mileage.

The Ford Ranger has been here in the New Zealand and Australian market for a long time (since 2006 I think) and it's one of the most popular utes in the NZ/AUS car markets.
I'm surprised they didn't enter the American car market much sooner considering that Ford is an American brand first and foremost.

The top-tier Ranger Raptor sells for around $40,000 here, but there have been some reliability issues with its 10-speed auto. Haven't heard much feedback about its bi-turbo 2.0 diesel, though.
