Intelligent Systems did not develop 1-2 Reboot camp, Wayforward did
It matters and is worth bringing up as a negative, but some people act 30FPS is literally unplayable and their eyes will start bleeding
I avoid 30fps like the plague and I really struggle to play through a game at that framerate, sometimes I'll just stop playing the game altogether
@@NIGHTWULF why is 30 fps so painful for you to play? Sure it can be jarring going from a ps5 to switch but most entertainment is 30 fps and so is our eyes
@@eletralad 24fps in film is fine because of the motion blur and the fact that you're just watching it, it gives it a cinematic look. When I play games at 30fps it feels like I'm interacting with a video or something, theres a disconnect between my inputs and the game, instead of me controlling the character it feels like I'm telling the character what to do, if that makes sense.
Hi John, I believe the Game Cube deserves a DF Retro showing its games that run at 60fps.
Im sure he does have something in the works. He just got done with ps2 ps3 stuff.
2:30 Not a "port." Super Mario RPG was ALSO a remake.
Many mistakes in this video
People mislabel so many things a port its mind boggling
Ya this is a remaster
It still looks good. But with this next generation of consoles, 30fps needs to be a thing of the past. Especially if things can be upscaled with AMD’s FSR or Nvidia’s DLSS. 30fps has gotta’ go.
As long as devs fully push the hardware for graphics, there will be 30fps
It wont be because too many people put up with it and defend it.
In my opinion what they had do is that now they found the golden egg thanks to the Switch (the last Iwata proyect, RIP) to just Focus on power.
They are starting to loose a lot for this, is a Damn shame not being able to play Elden Ring, Newest Resident and more just because this 7 years old console isn't able to run them.
@@JoseViktor4099how is it losing out? It's literally out selling these two powerhouse consoles every single month just about with a few here and there taken by PS5. But there's also the fact that the software sales on switch also shit on anything put out by Sony or Xbox. They are the ones losing out. If they didn't have their 3rd parties these console would be complete and utter failures. Very rarely does an exceptional 3rd party title come out. Nintendo releases exclusive after exclusive and they have things they offer no other game does on the scale they do it. It's just ignorant to say they are losing out when they have the current best selling console and over a billion games sold on the damn thing. Sony or Xbox doesn't have a single game that has an incredible attach rate. Switch has like 8. TOTK as of December 31 3023 has already sold 20 million copies. There's nothing selling like that at that speed on either of these other two consoles

What I also love about this remake is all the new animations, sprites and sound effects. Really makes the characters feel more lively.
Only 900p at docked, oh well, hope it would be 720p handheld
Likely same configuration as Paper Mario the Origami King. Expect 600p handheld.
I'm going to assume internally they think it's a problem that'll be fixed by the Switch 2
i mean not really they msot likely tried to get it to 60 but they just cant lol. its not as if they are lazy
Nintendo will never optimize this game for a future system. It's gonna be 30fps forever.

Ps5 took like 5 years to get even a small chunk of ps4 games updated to make use of ps5. Do you think nintendo of all companies is going to go back and make sure all (or even 10%) of their pre switch 2 games run any better on switch 2?
If we're being real here, TTYD doesn't even need all those reflections and crazy lightning. (A bunch of the reflections look very out of place and sort of unnecessary...) I promise you that achieving 60fps in this game is VERY much possible
Probably, I agree, they’re trying to hard and missing the point as to why the original game was so amazing. Spending their rendering budget on reflections and other stuff that doesn’t add to the experience like a silky smooth 60fps is absurd.
Wah, who cares
@@GigaChad_169was the point of the original precision, twitch gameplay like Call of Duty? Let's be real, if the original was a locked 30 instead of a 60 fps game you would've enjoyed it the same. Why do people get fixated on this? I only get annoyed at 30 fps if it's not locked or if the gameplay warrants a higher frame rate.
@@GigaChad_169you're corny as fuck and sounds like you never played the original paper Mario or TTYD. If you did you'd be ecstatic regardless. You would KNOW it's an amazing game and instead you're being a weenie hut junior about a frame rate that was shown to be incredibly consistent just like Origami Kings framerate. Youre the kind that buys a game. Boots it up. Looks at the benchmark and sees 60+ fps and you feel satisfied and then never play or finish the game. These development decisions just highlight that the Switch hardware is showing significant age. The SoC is 10 years old on its own…
The ps4 is also but no one bats an eye.
Nope. People are complaining about all types of ridiculous things on PS5 also. Just play the damn games and stop whining. It's pathetic.
Is it too optimistic to hope that TTYD runs at 60fps on the Switch 2?
Because if they knew it was releasing around the time of the Switch 2 launch, it makes perfect since to target the visual fidelity as high as they can for 30fps on the Switch 1, and then just double the framerate if you play on the Switch 2.
No, as long as the frame timing in combat is consistent.
Consistency is more important to me than the speed itself. Like take launch Jedi Survivor, the performance mode was so choppy it was honestly better to stick to 30 just for the sake of consistency.
I wish Nintendo would just come out and tell us what we can expect for our current Switch games going forward. I'd be more than happy to support this if I knew I could play it with a 60fps patch on a "Switch 2." Main thing I want to know about the new hardware... just I know if I should wait for a future release, or just buy the dang Switch version.
Looks fantastic. Can’t wait for it.
How do they go backwards lol. Just gonna play it on dolphin with hd texture pack and save my money.
They've got the original Paper Mario 64 running in an emulator and it looks fine. Same with Mario Sunshine and Galaxy. I don't know why The Thousand Year Door needed a massive graphical overhaul.
Yes it would've looked a little old, but it is old. I know that, I don't expect it to look on par with the best looking Switch titles.
Maybe I'm in a minority though, I see people going wild for the Metroid Prime remake and I'd be just as happy to get it looking like a Gamecube game.
Its a stylized game too, so just upping some textures and resolution would have been enough
Doesnt run fine at all, pm64 is all screwed up on nso
@@StarmenRock I completed it there with almost no issues. It may even have been improved since then, but I only encountered one graphical error that I don't remember from the N64 cart.
You’re in the minority yes
@@strangevision99 same. Played through without any hiccups.
I imagine it’s partially because it’s a portable system where battery drain is a consideration, it would be nice if there was an fps toggle but the difference between 30 and 60 in a slow game like this isn’t hugely noticeable imo. Halving the frame rate would definitely be less taxing and allow them to run at a lower wattage/not spin up the fans as much.
I also imagine they could get it to run at 60 if they wanted to but the tradeoff to a slight visual downgrade and probably reduced battery life wouldn’t be worth it.
It would be nice if they gave players the option though.
it would still had been a visual upgrade from the OG one. And many of their games are 60fps. Smash, Mario Kart, Odyssey, Metroid Prime and so on. The game has character moving and the camera scrolls so it is noticable.
Most gamers, an overwhelming majority, cant tell the difference between a stable 30fps and a stable 60fps.
Nintendo had mario oddessy in 2017 running at 60 at launch 3D and all still looks good makes me wondering about what why paper mario TTYD is slower imo
Was the original at 60 fps?
yes
Despite all the hate i'll buy this day one. I've never played the original and this one looks extremely handsome.
I envy you. I wish I can play again it for the first time. Such a banger of a game 👌
Alex saying the Nintendo special😂. Its np for me since i have a mclassic.
Yeah
I refunded mine after after hearing about this. A remake should never run worse than the original did on its original hardware unless it _really_ doesn't matter, like with Pokémon. Anything where inputs actually matter really should try to be 60fps.
Of course it took Paper Mario fans for this discussion to come up again.
I can’t wait for when this game is out. We’re playing it and this discussion about 30 frames per second essentially becomes nonexistent.
It looks aight, luigis mansion tho, they did nothing for that port, and people be praising ir
To the people complaining about the 30fps for the game, we got what we wanted nintendo listened to us it's not that serious.
I’m sure the game will play just fine. It is a turn based rpg. But that’s not really a point as this just sets a bad precedent for remakes remasters ports going forward. If the original version of a game runs at 60 FPS the developers of the remakes should also be targeting 60 FPS before a single bite of code is put into a computer. This also creates an interesting scenario in which a definitive of version of this game, no longer exist because on one hand, you have a version that runs at 60 FPS and on another hand, you have a version that has really fancy graphics the best of both worlds can never be achieved officially because of this.
It’s not turn based in a typical way, because it requires timing the inputs.
Sony changed their minds on Helldivers!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look at all the people defending a gamecube game running at half the framerate on the highest-selling console
Wild huh? One of the cools aspects of the original TTYD was the smooth progressive scanned image if you had a TV that supported it. Looked amazing back in the day and even now…feels like a step back honestly to fail to hit 60fps or native screen resolution.
Jumping on goombas and getting the timing right is crucial for certain moves like the infinite jump badge.
30 to 60 in my opinion is also a big blow to the original games style. I'm not a fan of the weird glossy reflections they put on the grass in the first chapter..
There was a really nice and chill look to the original but the remake looks like it's going everywhere.
Use an HD texture pack on Dolphin and it looks AMAZING without all those weird effects
I’ve heard that near the end of the game there is a timing based ability that’s not very forgiving. Wonder how this will work at 30
I always find hilarious that despite reviewers said that the FPS were such a non issue, people will still endlesly complaining on comments and Twitter, calling "fanboy" to everyone who disagrees (very mature).
But you know
"I love complaining on message boards about games I never played!"
is still such a good phrase that still hold ups perfectly.
30fps seems a bit odd, but I guess Nintendo thought it’s an okay sacrifice for an RPG style of game. It better be a locked 30fps with no frame time lag whatsoever then.
It doesn't matter a great deal for this type of game, but they easily could have made the game still look nice while being 60fps
People that obsess about framerates in games that don't need high framerates are not gamers. People that obsess about 4K resolutions while playing on giant televisions in their living rooms are not gamers. The real gamers are playing the damn games instead of whining and moaning about non-issues on the internet. This will be the last post I make today because I actually have games to play.
In my personal opinion no. I value consistency in my games.
I am buying it just to support hopefully a new Paper Mario game that goes back to what made the first 3 special
FPS is not a problem in semi-turn based games, as long the frame pacing is always good. And you can solve skills timing issues in battle by making them slighly more lenient.
Very disappointing. Glad I still have the original.
The ssr seem excessive
30fps with lock camera are really poor even for switch

@@knuclear200x I just responded the OG comment.
But responding to you neither the GameCube had reflections, Shadows, particle effect, this things actually take a lot for the device yk?, they went for graphics on LM3 , they went for graphics on TTYD Remake.
Asking for more FPS on this Game is asking for the Switch to be more powerful.
A valid complain would be that they went for graphics over framerate though, because this is what happened.
@@JoseViktor4099 This is why the highest-selling console is such a joke.
@@knuclear200x Well, as I was defending TTYD remake but not the console, lets be honest.
Nintendo delaying so much the switch, which was a worse PS4 to be ended is getting ridiculous at this point.
I also want a Switch 2.
Most switch games run at 30fps, the problem is this was a game that ran better and they made it worse for extra detail that the game didnt even need. They gave themselves this problem. If the game would have came out aiming for 60 like the old one and just had a higher res and textures everyone would have said it looked way better and this whole conversation wouldnt have been had. Its Paper Mario, if you would have never seen the game with reflections before you would have never thought it needed some, and honestly it still doesnt because its supposed to look like paper, which isnt glossy.. Literally every ground is glossy now, even grassy outdoors areas look wet for no reason
Hell yeah especially when it only looks slightly better than the gamecube version which actually ran at 60. Not only that but as Tom pointed out it runs at 900p with no AA docked so not even native res and sub-720 in handheld and the characters are 2D rendered so it's even less demanding. Hard pass for me. No excuse why these simple graphics can't run at 60 fps even in handheld mode when there are way better looking games on it that can run at a stable 60 fps. The switch by now is outdated AF but some devs are very talented and are optimization wizards. Look at DK Tropical Freeze, Mario Wonder with so many assets rendered per frame, Metroid Dread, Metroid Prime Remastered, Mario Odyssey, Burnout Paradise, Mario Kart 8, Horizon Chase Turbo, and Thumper to name a few. The last 6 games are full on 3D games too and run at a rock solid 60 and they also look way better than this paper simple doodle that looks like it was drawn by a preschooler
Nintendo fanboys stop damage controlling this and demand better because when you defend low effort and keep low standards why should devs try anymore? Think about it. I said it before and will say it again yes the Switch is very underpowered but what's the excuse when we have seen much better effort and talent out there with those games I mentioned
"Slightly better" is bullshit. It's a full on remake and not a remaster for a reason.
@@undergroundhiphopfan6335 aside from the res bump it looks very similar. If you were to render the gamecube version at the same res as the switch you will see that they are pretty much on par. So my case still stands
I respectfully disagree that the game needs to be running at 60fps, BUT the fact that Metroid Prime Remastered runs at 60fps and looks as good as it does makes me wonder what's going on under the hood with TTYD in comparison

You know what is great? The remake doesn't invalidate the old game, you can go and play that one.
The 2024 game is not the same game. It’s not 1:1
Mario odyssey can have 60 fps, why this mario paper is harder to run?
Not the same game bud, it's not a port
30fps is certainly not a problem for me on a turned based RPG, would’ve been nice if at least the battles were 60 but still not that big a deal.
I do wish we knew whether or not “Switch 2” will get some sort of boost mode for Switch games, because if you told me I could play it in 60fps next spring I’d definitely wait to play it. I just replayed it on GameCube last summer right before this was announced anyway lol
Hence even if I was a Nintendo fan (and I'm not) I still wouldn't buy this because ever since I played PSO on the Dreamcast in 2002, I've hated turn based combat with a vengeance.

Super Mario RPG runs at 60 fps while also being made from the ground up, just saying folks.
The cope here is crazy. Watch a side by side and you can clearly see the GC version is a lot smoother. Nintendo fanboys coping hard. This game is 100% capable of hitting 60fps on current hardware given you have games like Mario Odyssey or Smash running at a full 60fps.
This game will be glorious in 4k 60fps on PC while the fanboys cope with their 30 fps.
So far, the guys at Digital Foundry are the only ones that said that framerate can also matter for the overall enjoyment and the game looking more immersive. Most people talking about Paper Mario TTYD's framerate talk about how it is impactful during gameplay, but say no word about how beautiful a game can look when it runs at a higher framerate. And speaking of gameplay experience, I wouldn't be concerned about that since the original Paper Mario for N64 runs at 30 fps, and I haven't heard of anyone claiming to have issues with that at all.
Nintendo 64 games do feel dated because of poor, sometimes unstable frame rates. I think it aged less gracefully than SNES generation.
Doesnt matter as much as changing the narrative of many scenes, Goombas not hittting on Goombella is not cool just to play it safe. Cant call Mario Fat in 2024 either anymore I guess. But hey it is what it is. Dulled down text with make up over it in short and a few added features.
I own Paper Mario ThYD on Gamecube and can honestly say it wouldn't make much difference if the game ran at 30 instead of 60. With all of the improvements they added to the visials people complaining about this are being absolutely ridiculous. This isn't F-Zero or Smash. It's Paper Mario.
Frame rate isn't a big deal for rpg's
@@Oceanandskylinevidss Agreed.
It matters to me. I don't care how much they pretty up the graphics, it's a 23 year old game that ran at 60 fps on exponentially weaker hardware.
It's not like Nintendo was unaware of the Switch's hardware & didn't know what specs to target, so they should've developed this remake to upgrade as much as they can within the confines of the system's capabilities.
Remakes that are technically inferior in ANY way are unacceptable. Remakes should be the definitive way to play in all aspects, only improving on what the original offered.
Correction: it's a 20 year old game. Paper mario ttyd came out in 2004.
Just emulate the GameCube version at 4K with a texture pack, simple as that. A remake downgrading the fps to half the original is just hilarious.

A fool and their money, as the saying goes…
If its a choice between reflections and 60 FPS, I feel like the answer is obvious. We don't need all that fancy stuff if it tanks the FPS, unless they have a Switch 2 version coming later. If there's no 60 FPS version coming, it was a mistake.

This game was built around precise timings and when you halve the FPS you necessarily change the timings of superguards. It also just makes the game feel sluggish compared to the original, as they said in the video. Remakes should be made primarily for the original audience, not new ones.
So you want a half assed graphical style then, sorry but no

The switch really is having issues even some SNES ganes dont run well via the emulation. Super R-Type has more lag than the SNES original and in places the original didnt. It has sound issues the original didnt have in Super Mario World in Forest of Illusion 2nd level under water to unlock the blue switch. When it gets to one area with the spike balls enmeies it lags so bad the original didnt ever do that in SNES.
Nintendo have milked the switch to the points its udders are bleeding
For a pseudo action turn-based RPG game like Paper Mario? Nope. As long as the input latency's tight, then the massive visual remake over the framerate cut is fine by me. I'm more worried about the censoring of some dialogues/content from the original in place of some more D.E.I friendly, non-offensive dialogues for the 'everybody community' and fabled 'modern gaming' audiences. Which someone has already made a comparison video of on CZcams.
Plus the Switch 2's gonna be coming out the next year or so anyway and many original Switch games will likely get a 60fps patches, especially the more recent ones like TTYD Remake. Or at least that's what everybody's assuming at this point.
Yeah, the game doesn't require precise inputs, so 30 fps isn't really a problem, specially if they can get it looking better on the switch hardware
I really dont get the whole turn base doesnt deserve 60fps angle. the visuals took a hit. Higher framerate is a visual too, not just a latency thing. If this remaster came out at a lower resolution than the original people would not be defending the choices made.

Its crazy how little people consider 60fps as more than just a latency thing. "Its a turn base game so what?"
Imagine if they remastered Smash Bros 64. Gave it reflections and upped the visuals, it still ran at 60fps, but now the resolution was lower than the original. Wouldnt you think that was a problem? Hell if it was even running at 720p docked people would see it as a problem becuase it would worsen the experience. Thats the argument for 60fps. If the lighting was worse, if the textures were worse, if literally any other setting was worse than the original people would point it out, but when the fps is half of the original making the fluidity of every movement in the game not as smooth as the 20 year old OG, then its just nerds being picky.
Worst part is TTYD isn't a typical turn based rpg. Most attacks have timing challenges that will be affected by a low framerate. Heck, superguards have a 3 frame window. How are they going to translate that to half the framerate?
It still looks smooth and looks better overall. For me, the 30 fps fits the art style.

That is NOT true, that's a bogus myth, just think about it for 2 seconds. If your eyes couldn't see more than 15 FPS, you wouldn't be able to notice framerate differences at all and no one would even be able to have this conversation. If you can see 30fps games and 60fps games and can tell the difference, then by definition you are seeing more than 15 FPS. And also, your eyes don't see in "frames" to begin with, that's not how the real world works, it's just how computer graphics work. That's only a games and movies thing, where both are essentially just a bunch of still images being played in rapid succession to simulate the look of movement, but real life and human sight doesn't work under that fakery.
@@legoboy7107 so papery
So papery.
Well, yes
It does matter. Will have to wait until Switch 2. Or just play the original.
It doesn’t f***ing matter! It’s PAPER MARIO THE THOUSAND YEAR DOOR!
Fucking thank you
That's why the fps does matter, its an important game.
If the original game wasn't 60 FPS you'd maybe have an argument
@@WhackCalZone but this is a Nintendo console
Paper mario has been 30fps for so many games now. If they increaced it to 60 it would look substantially worse than origami king ad color splash
If I remember right, the Dreamcast had 30 fps, lol
It supported progressive scan 60fps through VGA. Similar to the Gamecube supporting progressive scan on TVs.
I would like to clarify my earlier comment. I do like a lot of digital foundry content. I am somewhat growing out of being concerned with the current state of video games. But Nintendo, a company I hold in high regard for their willingness to go against the grain for the exceptional games and concepts they bring to the masses for the sake of joy. Is doing things that will only hinder this strength. I know they are concerned with profits primarily. I’m not ignoring this. It’s the special aspects of their principles I see falling away for the sake of getting along that is disappointing. I find more companies making these concessions and see it ruining gaming for future generations. I wish you well. I just wish an organization as yours having great integrity would talk of such topics in earnest. God bless.
Does it look pretty good, sure. However the issue is why is 30fps considered acceptable? 30fps only looks good in certain genres, but in others it completely ruins gameplay. I would personally think it'd be best for side scrollers to have at least 40fps since a big part of it is that constant movement. It's beautiful but could be a lot better performance wise.
Short answer: it’s a turned based RPG, who gives a piss?
Im so hyped for the game it looks 100 times better than the Gamecube version :D
Anyone who accepts less deserves less. Not only did they neuter the fps but they also censored a part in the game from the original. Neither are acceptable imo
Anything above 30 fps is a luxury. Change my mind just like having a $5000 pc is a luxury
Nah, over 60 is a luxury because you literally need to buy a special display for it, whereas every display is capable of 60hz
Ahhh love that my rog ally will have a patch to play this at full 1080 60fps
Its either bad developers or bad hardware there is no reason why this game can't be 60fps on Switch
Panning cameras look awful at 30fps. My eyes and head physically hurts when watching a lot of panning on 30fps games.
It’s fine. Ideal? No, given the original. But actual problem? No.
Nobody would notice the 30FPS frame rate if it wasnt for the DF guys.
Bro, everyone is gonna notice. Look how smooth the original game is, we both know the game will TARGET 30FPS but will most likely not reach it most of the time.
@@StarmenRock no, nobody will notice 30FPS as long as it's steady+locked. 99% of players won't have the original for reference or won't remember its 60FPS clip.
Since the majority of games run at 30FPS anyway, it won't feel off or different.
@@utternonsenseproductions2415 i dont understand why you think people wont complain about fps. Its so obvious
@@StarmenRock no it's not obvious. If framerate is 30FPS locked, it's perfectly playable, no problems, no issues. If a game is 30FPS up and down, dipping all the time down to 20FPS then that's another story. But a game with slow gameplay at steady 30FPS is no issue, the great majority of games aim for/run at 30FPS and arent a problem. Many games with faster gameplay run at 30FPS with no issue and no complaints.
It's worth adding that I LOVE 60FPS games. There is a difference. However, 30FPS locked is absolutely fine for the great majority of games!
you don't need to watch or know about DF to have working eyes Lol. but sure, the vast majority of people buying it don't care which is why these things happen. i don't personally think 30 is unplayable but I wouldn't enjoy it anymore so I don't bother
30fps is sad.
This opinion is much more sad lol
The hardware is 7 years old. They need new hardware.
And a hacked switch will be able to play this at 60fps using fps hacks
the switch version looks so bad right next to the gc version :s think i'll stick with the original
