  • Yunnan is China's southernmost province, and one of the country's most fascinating regions. Over thousands of years, the natural barriers in China’s remote south-western frontier have created isolated pockets of culture, incubating some of the world’s most extraordinary ways of life. 25 distinct ethnicities live in the province of Yunnan-from the buffalo-worshipping Wa to the water-splashing Dai. As modern development sweeps through the land, ancient secrets are shared with the world.

Jawa, Bugis, Bawean are branches of Malay people.(Africa & Philipines also have an ethnic/race called Malay), Soon they migrated to Yunnan and also Taiwan, Taiwan via Philippines. whom are now called the natives of Taiwan. By DNA, Malay people are older than Chinese and Indian. The ancient Indian race was annilated by the eruption of Mt Toba (if i remember correctly). The newer Indian came later.

That's a little far for why direct historical connection between them. But maybe you are implying that.
The Wa are pretty far inland almost behind a bunch of mountains. The migrations through that area towards Bornes are probably too far back in time to carry all those cultural nuances you are pointing to.
The Wa speaks Pelaugic language. It's a different "big branch" in the language family tree that also reaches over to Borneo.
But some ideas and techniques in the arts probably spread in that direction during the waves of Buddhist and Hindu culture that rose through southeast Asia at a couple different points in time. Or, maybe, the Khmer Empire created a cultural and trade connection across that vast distance a thousand years ago.
      That's my best educated guess.

There really aren't many unpretentious people near me. I write comments to stay connected. Besides I get to choose the subject matter/topic that are truly interesting to spend effort commenting. I had once been accused of "flooding the comment section" by a commentary who thought I write too much, too long.
In China, there are many more people. I think there are those in the cities that are pretentious but are truly busy in learning and developing therefore connect in a different way than those in the USA. The USA is already fully developed country, though only 2.5 centuries old and civilized in the last century. China is an old country, civilized long ago in ancient times, but was very underdeveloped until late 20th century. These minority groups like the Lahu people that do things in more the traditional ways are slowly progressing - but only in necessary areas.

I do not see physical or language similarities between Nagas and Chin-Mizo-Kuki or Meitei-Assamese. I don't see similarities between Nagas and other Northeastern Indian States. I do not see similarities between Nagas and Southeast Asian. I do not see similarities between Nagas and Yunnan Province. If you are dark/brown skin and short with somehow Oriental looks (but mixed DNA) and you have Indian names and surnames, please don't try to associate with Nagas, we are not your cousin. We are not related with anyone other than ourselves, over and out. People with Indian name and surname, all claiming to be from Yunnan Province SMH. Just stop already.

I traveled in Yunnan in 2019 and wanted to return overland from Laos in 2020 but the borders of China closed in March 2020. I wanted to return because I had had a taste of Yunnan culture through the Yeo and the Bai people. I wanted to explore such beautiful lands with cultures so connected with the natural world where a deep joy lives in the heart of the people. This film has captured the feeling of the connection humans can have for thousands of years if we cherish our connection with our earth mother (of us all). Cannot wait to return to these beautiful lands.

    16:00 Hekai, the Bulang Mountains
91 year old Grandma enjoys climbing the short trees for tea leaves. Her humble home and village is lovely. Looks comfortable, open, yet safe and sheltered.
    Pu-erh tea ...
    From ancient tea trees.
Natural treasure more precious than gold. So true!
And the younger tree climber of Lahu people respects the trees like respect for her parents, adoration as with her children. Very nice warm feeling she gave me. A touching portrait. And the Lahu people of ancient times were known for their skills in hunting tiger, according to narrator. Then they picked leaves from the cherished tea trees. As in this clip of the video.

I also really enjoyed the "mud fights" of the Wa people. Who said "black face" was a negative? It's all a matter of perspective.
