This intro is actually really smart.
It shows the player how damage plays out, with Mario shrinking from taking a hit from Bowser Jr..
It also explains why we start out small compared to later entries.

How the heck did Mario get beaten up? The only powerful enemy in the game is Bowser!
@Tayshon Johnson Bowser Jr. was very easy to beat in the first boss battle. Also, even if Jr is as powerful as Bowser, Mario beats Bowser, too.
