Honestly, as a spanish person, I wouldn't mind joining forces with Portugal but not in a "national" way. More like an economic, trade and maybe military cooperation. By the way, I don't think portuguese people are very into the idea, even though I am completely sure that we spanish and portuguese people get on very well in general. Saludos, amigo!
Portuguese and Spanish military train a lot together (Navy, Army and Air Force - there are for example in the lattest branch mentioned a lot of joint operations with you F-18 and ours F-16). Also, our polices are the most interactive polices in the eu. Many times we go to Spain to learn some tricks of the trade and join combined forces, others are about Spanish policemen in Portugal. I really like this healthy partnership.,
The EU and NATO already give us plenty of opportunities to interact at all needed levels. But for this to be possible, you'd have to consider we would never accept back monarchy (and even less to become subjects of your king), so you would have to become a republic to allow for our common election of a president and parliament/government.
@@quironwhoknows6491 I really think that most of Spain wouldn't mind to be a Republic. There is a notorious republican movement and it's not like UK where people loved their monarchy. So that wouldn't be any issue haha

Despite knowing the fact that it's not going to happen given the history that we share, I, as a Spaniard, see Portugal as the most welcoming and close country in absolute terms, at least for us. Portuguese people are incredibly kind and charming, and travelling there really does feel like you didn't cross any border at all.
you Spaniards aren't too bad yourselves, even though I've never been to Spain proper, just driving through, I've always had good experiences with Spanish folk. I think the "Spain bad" "Portugal bad" mentality is more of an older folks thing. Younger people who grew up with the EU and the Internet etc. don't really think like that even though the history books kind of tell us to.

As an idea, it sounds really
good, but I think it wouldn’t ever work. We are similar countries, with a similar language and a common history and land (Iberian Peninsula), but we are different. Furthermore, it is obvious that one part will have more influence over the other. Spain is bigger and has a larger population than Portugal, so it wouldn’t be an equal Union. Portugal will always be the “smaller” partner, and not because we, as Spaniards, want Portugal to be that, it’s just due to size and population reasons, and Portugal (obviously) will never let that happen, so for us it will be more a pain than a profitable Union.
So I think we both prefer to keep our independence, rather than making an experiment that never worked (and which, except for a short historical period of time, none of us wanted either).
Even when we two had the first Global Empires and, because of that, a possible conflict of interests, we decided to sing Treaties (Tordesillas and Zaragoza) and to literally distribute the world between each other, just to avoid a direct conflict between us both. And, in general, both parties always respected and honored those treaties, while the rest of European Empires were always fighting to diminish their enemy.
We both could have had try to conquer each other, and instead of that, we always preferred to work together and to cooperate.
I really love Portugal and as a Spaniard I consider Portuguese people as our brothers, but I think I prefer to share a common house and living in two different rooms, rather than living in the same room together... We need to strengthen ties, we should work together in order to bring closer Iberian culture and heritage all around the world, and we have to start looking to each other more than we are currently doing (I think it was Saramago who said that Spaniards and Portuguese are like Siamese brothers who were born at the same time but who had never looked to each other). I really feel far closer to Portuguese people than to any other European, but, as far as I consider Portugal as a brother, I also think that brothers need to live separately, loving each other and always supporting each other when needed, but each brother needs his own room, which we always be open for each other.
I think it’s time now to vindicate a unity, but not in form of a common state, but via culture, history, and a common blood. We don’t need to be a single country in order to get closer, we just need to understand that we will always live next door, and that we will always be brothers. Brothers living separately, but brothers at the end of the day.
i couldn't have said it better.
That's exactly my point, I have a huge respect for the Spanish people "nuestros hermanos" but it wouldn't be beneficial to any if we joined together. I think that we should strengthen our relationship and build an diplomatic common zone, but an union would only make us fell more apart than today.
Good text!
Well, i think it could work out this time, with a real Federation like these guys: ibernexus.com/ people interested in this topic should sheck it out and see their views, im not saying i fully agree, but doing it like that it could work out, we can see the makers of this site and project care about the other side and not just annexatation like Castillia/Spain wanted.
Muy de acuerdo 👏🏻
As a Galician, I understand why the Portuguese wouldn't want to merge with Spain. Spanish centralists have a tendency to try to supress anyone who wants to keep their own identity. They wouldn't treat the Portuguese any differently.
... Talking about nonsense. Your identity is safe within the Spainsh borders, don't worry for that, other thing is that you don't define it as Galician/Spanish, just only Galician..

This seemed like an interesting topic, but then I realised both countries are already in a union.
The European Union.
They already share a common currency, have unrestricted trade and people can move across the peninsula without border controls. I would even argue that the EU is on it's way to become a federation. What other reasons to unite could there possibly be?
I guess to be a more powerful state inside that federation, or to remain united in case the EU falls

Some historical inconsistencies in this video: 4:53 County of Portugal was never subjected to Spain (Spain didn't even exist when the county and later the Kingdom was formed); 6:11 Spain didn't continue on because Spain didn't exist as a country yet; 6:23 Persists the simplification of calling Leon as Spain. Overall, History tells us that some mistakes should not be repeated! The 2 countries are very distinct to be a single country!
Bro, the man is Portuguese and he knows very well Spain didn't exist untill the European expansion. He's simplifying for the viewers. Leave him alone.
And Portugal WAS subject to Leon and Spain. Leon when we were the county of Portucale. Spain when the Iberian Union happened.

The capital would probably be Madrid since it's already designed as an independent capital state, and it would have a Semi-presidential system.

I doubt you are Portuguese! I real native Portuguese person would never agree to that!
Cool video!👍
The world will come to an end before this happens.
We, Spaniards, and Portuguese are close neighbours and good friends. But that doesn't mean you want to have your neighbour staying in your couch all day. Portuguese don't want an union. Spanish don't want it either.
Catalans don't want it either.
garrafenc catalans are spanish so
@@catalannationalist9847 I'm catalan and I do want it so?
Latin brothers 🇵🇹🇪🇸🇮🇹
What about France and Romania?
Happy with our own borders, the three countries. French are arrogant, Romania would be fine but I guess they prefer the balkan/eastern countries axis.
I only put these 3 because they have very simular cultures
Óptimo canal!
The Spanish came unexpectedly.....
And in such an _inquisitive_ manner
No one expects the Spanish Inquisition
I’m Portuguese - I love and respect our lovely and amazing sibling neighbours! But the answer is : NON!
He's from portugal too. This dude did this as a joke
Spain and Portugal merging is possible when Canada and the US merge or Australia and New Zealand which is never going to happen.
But Hispanic America and Brazil can form a kind of European Union in America, because Spanish and Portuguese are the same in 89% of the words. 85% Catholic. The sum of Spanish and Portuguese speakers in Spain, America, Africa and Asia, as their mother tongue and Catholic religion, is 700 million people. 20 millions km2. The sum of the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa (including people who have English as a second language) is 510 million people.
When i heard u saying the name "saramago", i must to say that ur accent is pretty good! It was just like a poruguese person
He is portugueix
He is Portuguese. How is his accent not obvious. Even in English I knew he was Portuguese.
Make a video about Portugaliza!
Interesting video option: union Romania-Moldova, reunited Irland, the "United States of Great Austria Project", the partition of belgium, and the partition in North Italy and The Two Sicilies!
US of Austria is a great idea! I remember a HOI4 Mod that used that right?
@@General.Knowledge from what i remember it is used in kaiserreich, and then you can unite them into the danubian federation, austria-hungary, or don't unite at all. best mod in hoi4 tbh
@@General.Knowledge sorry my english Is bad and I don't understand what is "HOI4 mod" but meu português é bom, sou argentino e estudei a lingua na universidade!
As a Spanish, I would like to say I would enjoy this union.
As a Spaniard and a Galician I abhor this idea. Always friend, never united. It will simply not work and is not worth the trouble
Very interesting. Thanks from Navarra! :D
The closest of a Union between Spain and Portugal should personally be a trading partnership or maybe a military alliance. A full union would cause more trouble than its worth
I think the idea of a federal Iberian Union would be the best of both countries, with each region maintaining cultures languages and autonomy. But The the best realistic option for our nations is to cooperate and grow tighter bonds (similar to Benelux) while maintaining 2 sovereignties. 🇪🇸💞🇵🇹
European countries will lose sovereignty anyhow
@@ricardopontes7177 Like we have much sovereignty now 😂
We are good as we are, thank you!! As we say in Portugal: each one in its own house xD
General being such a lad and saying "I'll take 60 seconds to talk to you" so we know how long to skip forward. What a boy.
This was very enjoyable to watch. Just one minor correction; 'Português' in English is spelled 'Portuguese'.

Love the play with the LOTR speech at the beginning of the Fellowship film
Wow! Saving it for later! I want to wtach this with all time and atention! :)
Good! :)
@@General.Knowledge :D watched with full attention and loved your perspective!
Yes, it would be interesting, but it is much better as it is, each country montage their independence, culture and identity.
People say that Portugal and Spain are brother nations and I agree. Fought a lot when children and now, as grown up brothers each one must live its own life indenpentely, dealing supporting each other.
Love your work! Truly!
3:55 “But there were some who resisted. A last aliance of Christian kingdoms matched against the armies of Morse.”
I see what you did here. One youtuber to rule them all
*facepalm*
MOORS, not Morse!
Very interesting video, but in my opinion it does not lack certain subjective bias towards Portugal. For example, how would Spanish language risk became Portuguese? It does not make sense. All equal things considered (here there is no superior culture or anything like that) the most spoken language would likely prevail, in case only one survives. And Spanish is more widely spoken, both inside and also outside the Iberian Peninsula. GDP difference of 7K per capita is not huge, but still relevant. Also you think Spain is completely fractured, but this is not the case. There are troubles in certain autonomous regions, but not even the whole regions with a co-official language would want to secede. In Galicia the center-right is ruling as so have done many times, for example. No, Spain would not join such federation as a collection of 17 states (maybe some of them could, but not the whole country), and therefore Portugal would not dominate the union. Also Portugal lacks big cities (with the exception of th capital Lisbon), which could be counter-productive for this country in the long run, in case such union one day happens. If cities grow in both countries, the relative increment of Spanish population in Portuguese cities would be bigger than Portuguese in Spanish cities.
True, this 7k per capita is a LOT in a total of 30k then that topic was super bias and people can say whatever they want but each region just want more power and not separation. Spain together is a global power and got a saying in EU ruling but if were 7 small Countrys they would be powerless and no voice in Europe like Portugal. Portuguese people love to be "Patriotic" and say "never" in anexation but at same time run at droves to work and live outside, double standards....what i am not liking of Spain now is seing it go so muth left/feminist leaning and voting for Socialism goverments, they will destroy Spain like Socialism destroyed Portugal. Wish the best to you anons, great Country and one of the Best in Europe to live, pretty good economic power with great weather and food.
@@SaltEnjoyer007 “Spain is global power”. You had me laughing, ngl.
I love this idea ... I like it when countrys merge together!!! :DDD
11:44 Solution, decentralizing the power with various capitals, Lisbon and Madrid, but maybe adding some more like Barcelona. All regions would have the same power on the government and there wouldn't be a president but more like a council just like the council of Europe in which all the presidents of each region of Iberia (presidents choosen democraticaly) would discuss about the ruling of Iberia.
Can you do a video where every single communist country united as one, the Communist Republic?
Join his discord and suggest this idea there link in the description
@La Rugs Cuba made some politicam and Constitutional changes in 2019, so I don't think they are communist anymore
There are no "communist" States in the world. There have only been two socialist States, the Soviet Union until 1956 and Albania until the 50's.
@La Rugs China is not socialist/communist, it has a capitalist economy and their constitution says they are maoist, and North Korea has an internal economy which some defectors from NK describe as capitalist, and they are described as Juche (sorry for my english)
“Andorra who is kind of independent”

When I was a child I thought a good idea create the "Iberian Kingdom" something similar to the UE but under an only flag. Spain, Portugal, Catalonia, Euskadi, Galicia, Andorra and Gibraltar. I was a child so I didn't know how really complicated would be
i just realized you're portuguese. All those times when you perfectly said a portuguese word should've already give me that hint. Bons dias
