Portugal and Spain, or the Portuguese Republic and the Kingdom of Spain
The two neighboring southwestern European countries that make up most of the Iberian Peninsula. At one point in history, the two had major empires around the world, and were two of the early major players during the Age of Exploration, but more on that a little later.
Despite both not being that particularly big as countries go, both have had a tremendous influence over the entire world. One example of that? Well around 250 million people around the world today speak Portuguese, the official language of Portugal. Around 525 million people around the world today speak Spanish, the official language of Spain, making it the fourth most-spoken language in the world.
The largest city in both countries is also the capital. However, Madrid, the capital and largest city in Spain, is two and a half times bigger than Lisbon, the capital and largest city in Portugal.
Both have among the highest life expectancy in the entire world. (S-83.3, P-81.3) The average age in both is about the same. (S-43, P-42.2)
Both have islands quite a ways off the mainland in the Atlantic Ocean. Spain has the Canary Islands down here. Portugal has the Azores and Madeira here and here. Spain also has the Balearic Islands of its east coast.
On the mainland, both generally don’t have to worry about natural disasters that much. Sure, there are occasional earthquakes, but rarely do the earthquakes do that much damage. One big exception is a devastating earthquake that almost completely destroyed Lisbon in 1755.
Both have a lot of debt, although Portugal’s debt is worse. The poverty rate is about the same in both, although it’s a bit higher in Portugal. (S-21.6%, P- 23.3%)
Both are in the European Union. Both don’t have the death penalty nor life in prison for crimes. In fact, Portugal was the first country in the world to get rid of life in prison, way back in 1884. Football, aka soccer... is the most popular sport in both countries. Well duh. The running of the bulls is a regular crazy event in both countries, although it’s the one in Pamplona, Spain that gets worldwide attention every year. A passionate minority in both also loves bullfighting.
But what about their differences? There’s actually quite a bit more.
Spain also has almost five times as many people. (S- 49 million, P- 10.3 million) While Spain’s population has been growing at a slow pace, Portugal’s population has been shrinking for several years now.
Spain borders not only Portugal to the west, but also France and the tiny country of Andorra to the north. Morocco is also just a 14 km jump over the Strait of Gibraltar. Portugal, the westernmost country of continental Europe, is only bordered by Spain and is often like, “Spain, get off me bro!”
Spain is more religious. While the majority of residents in both identify as Roman Catholic, over 27% of Spain residents have no religion.
Which is better? Spain or Portugal?
Which countries should I compare next?
You should compare Lebanon and Israel next.
If you haven't already done so, maybe Colombia/Venezuela, or Perú/Ecuador. Thanks!
Mr. Beat Portugal is better I have a bit of ancestry from Portugal none from Spain though great video Mr. Beat
Brazil and Argentina compared
Can you please do Maine and New Brunswick compared? New Brunswick frankly needs more attention than it gets.

@@corchakdepe7276 yeah, sure, 'cause they never visit Portugal... By the way, IF they really need the information, they understand 👌
I speak both Spanish and Portuguese. Iberian could all be a nation of polyglots but some reason why you guys put your selves in a position “my language is the best, you should learn”. Even Spanish people have problems with catalan and Galician. Sorry I can’t understand you guys
V P I’m from Galicia and we are Portugals best buddy from Spain. I can asure you that normal Spanish people legit don’t understand Portuguese (they understand like 30% of what you say, where as I would understand about 80-90%). Written Portuguese is something completely different though because literally every Spanish person understands everything.

Fun fact, the "afternoon tea" culture in Englad actually comes from Portugal, and arrived the Britain after a portuguese princess (D. Catarina de Bragança) married Charles II
Which in turn came from China
@@gaelleistanbul yes that’s correct, the word for tea in China is “Chá” which is totally the same in Portugal, of course they got there and presented with tea, the asked the name so the it’s same sound name. What my friend is trying to say is that Portugal introduced the habit of Tea in the courts of Europe, with the Portuguese Princess arriving to England her father the King shipped many presents for the English king, among many there were huge boxes full of TEA written on the packages 📦 T.E.A. (Transporte de Ervas Aromáticas) Transport of Aromatic herbs, I guess the English didn’t get the name correctly that’s why 😌

Not really. Portugal din't devide anytjingbwith Spain. It did so with Castile...way before Spain ever existe ;)
That is the English narrative intended at discrediting bth Portugal and Spain, Anglo Saxon historical fashion. I'm very bad at Portuguese and spoke it at maybe an elementary level at best back when I spoke it regularly, but knowing what it's supposed to sound like there is nothing worse than hearing it butchered. It's really a nice language and with the exception of a couple sounds (lh being the obvious one) it's not that hard to learn.
I'm from SPain and we don't have that much "siesta" culture now. It's more for weekends, but we don't devote for the siesta. Also, the demon baby jumping and the casket carrying alive people is for some specific towns
In portugal the siesta (or sesta as we say) is also only on weekends, mainly on sundays.
Spain explorers Opened Up Age of Discovery!
First and Best Global Empire
maraming pagmamahal mula sa mga pilipina
I think you are mistaken. First global empire was Portuguese. Look it up there is loads of literature on it.
Very true! Spain first Global Empire and first to give the citizens in their Viceroyalties same rights as Spaniards ( *Ley de las Indias* ) something the Portgee, Frenchies, Anglos and Dutch *never* did. Yup ❤🇪🇸
Yes because Spain discovered america and found colony there but portugues people was the first navegante in found new routes to India and africa. And then it’s Spain the first global superpower empire in the world. But portugual was the first country in occupied new land in Africa ceuta madeira Azores Cape Verde
@@brunocarreiro7796 that it’s not true because america was founded by Spanish they first country to had colony in the entire world you have only ports at the and trades of slavery people from Africa to Brazil
@@leonardosanchez5442 I can't quite understand what you have written. When Portugal and Spain signed the treaty of Tordesilhas Portuguese already knew about South America hence when it came to defining the Tordesilhas line, the Portuguese "pushed" the line further towards west hence encompassing Brazil
2:55 The Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla border Morocco
Holy crap! I can't believe I forgot about those two cities!
@@iammrbeat You also forgot about Gibraltar, so Spain also borders the UK
That what I wanted to say
@@uvbe Yeah Gibraltar is not technically part of the UK, though. It's an overseas territory.
@@uvbe not exactly. Gibraltar is not and has never been a part of UK as such, unlike Ceuta and Melilla which are treated as integral parts of Spain. Gibraltar is in fact a British Overseas Territory, which is a completely different subdivision of places under British rule
The best thing of this video is reading the comment section and realizing how much love there is between these countries. Their inhabitants, instead of having a pointless argument about which country is better, they are just showing love to each other. I think that tells much more about these two countries than many things in the video
PS: Yes, Im from Spain but I also love Portugal like crazy
Amen
I would like Spain more if they hadn't tried to take over Portugal, but I have nothing against the people
Portugal is a beautiful and underrated country ♥️ Greetings from Spain!
What is weird is that, according to person who made the video and true fact, Portugal is mostly rural, and around where I live, no one likes Spain. I’m sorry but we are bitter that Spain conquered us for 60 years cuz we needed a king, lost our colonies and a couple years later helped the French to invade us. But we still hate Brazil more. Each to their own opinion I guess
@@tizurl Could I ask in which part of the country you live? I assume it depends on the region as well. As a Galician, I heard that "lisboetas" don´t like spaniards a lot...generally speaking.
