Why Do So Many American States Have Panhandles?
▶ In this video I talk about the US states that have panhandles, such as Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Alaska, Maryland, Idaho or West Virginia (which has two of them!) in addition to those of Connecticut and Nebraska. Understanding what these narrow strips of land are and the reasons and history behind why the borders of said states have them, even though they cause somewhat of an eye-sore on maps.

Portugal and Brazil definitely do not have that special bond. Portugal does have a special bond with former colonies and its actually surprising to me that many of the african countries natives like us so much, since war ended in '74, but brazilians are always complaining about Portugal/portuguese and do not have, generally, a good image inside Portugal. There's no brotherhood, unfortunately
Lol, the part about Alabama and W Florida. Growing up in the FL panhandle, we always called that part Lower Alabama or the Redneck Riviera
Would you say that the Southwestern part of New Mexico is a panhandle. I know why it exist, Gadsden Purchase, and the other alternative is giving back to Mexico. But by definition would it be a panhandle
How else are you gonna hold the pan without a handle?!?!
azawad = the most triangular country
I've been to all the panhandles.
Hungarians have a special way of thinking about foreign policy...in the first world war they believed that communism would restore their empire...in ww2 they believed that Nazi Germany would and they felt compelled by them to fight until total destruction ...now Orban is playing his card with Russia against NATO and the EU ....each time they were humiliated and destroyed ...so intelligent people never invent even though the results of the equation are the same ...but they should understand something .... if you buy weapons from those who challenge them to fight, you have already lost... with Swedish planes and German weaponry to overthrow NATO and the EU... it is the death of reason..
Hot take: Only FL, OK, and MD should count.
Now how did Maryland become a "Panhandle": State since 1632?
What about the Alabama panhandle?
couldn't New England be considered a panhandle into Canada?
The US should correct them and make them into sprate states, West Maryland would be great.
I'm confused about why Nebraska counts and Utah doesn't. They seem extremely similar. Both are significantly wider than they are long (the Texas one also has this property), and also both are more than half the width of the state along that edge, which sets them apart from all the others on the list, but I can't find any criterion that sets the Utah one apart from the Nebraska one (apart from being oriented north-south vs east-west, but we're counting Idaho, so that should be irrelevant). Honestly, the sticky-down bits of Alabama and Mississippi and Missouri seem like they have more claim to panhandle status, than Nebraska or Utah.
Lucky for people in the Florida panhandle when broke-ass Alabama tried over and over again to obtain the panhandle the state of Florida said no.
Tell Aviv has NEVER been Israel's capital!
Prorupted is a term we’ve used.
If Nebraska has a panhandle, then Kansas should have one, too, just out of Jayhawk pride.
I was born and raised in Wheeling in the Northern panhandle of West Virginia (and still live nearby in Pennsylvania). At some point, I learned or heard that when the Mason-Dixon line was surveyed, had they known how close they were to the Ohio, they would have continued, and the panhandle would be part of Pennsylvania, but I do not know the truth of it.
If I were holding Texas like a pan, I'd hold it by the El Paso salient, rather than the Amarillo block. Those mountains near El Paso make for a better textured grip.
Idk about you, but Florida's shape makes me think of something else...😂
Oklahoma is the only state that looks like a pan.
The EU HAS implemented this abomination to deliberately and permenantly destroy european culture. its in full flow with invaders from the 3rd world forcing their barbaric medievil religion as absolute and with out opposition. the great reset. WEF and EU.UN plan. is fallout a vision of reality....
Idaho is a proper panhandle.
Because of Gerrymandering.
I live in a panhandle to a panhandle in a state that used to be called 'The Panhandle State." I guess I should watch.
Marylander here, our northern border (and Delaware becoming it’s own state) was a settlement after the Cresap's War with Pennsylvania during the 1730s, which we got the bad end of the deal, if things went our way, we would’ve had Philadelphia and the whole DelMarVa peninsula, our southern border was a river (except for the DC cutout) and the Mason Dixon line going any lower would’ve made an exclave There’s a whole Wikipedia page on it
Would the 2 mile long part of northeast New Mexico count as a pan handle?
Obviously land that one state wants but another does not. The Florida Panhandle was not wanted by Alabama. The Missouri Compromise gave the upper part of the Texas Panhandle to Oklahoma. It belongs to Native Americans. Pheasants like that place.
What?? Florida stretched all the way to the Mississippi River in Louisiana. Spain controlled the entire region and ceded the Mobile and Biloxi areas to the U.S. Alabama spent 80 years trying to acquire the remainder of the Florida panhandle but was unsuccessful.
LOL it says panhandle, I thought it said panhandler LO.L
I was thinking panhandlers like the ones on the street.Collecting money and doing stupid stuff l o l. And to the other guy who said what panhandler? That one that I said begging on the street
We got lazy thats how
You forgot about New Jersey has a panhandle also.
You never actually give a reason for most of their existence other than border disputes. But why was it important for a state or colony to want it in the first place? Is there a topographical reason? Align with river bank or mountain? Access to water? River port? Existing population center?
Why does Minnesota not count?
Maryland was the 7th state to join the US not the 13th. Lol and I do indeed live less then 15 min from that narrow spot in our state
They only think in make babies.
Awesome video.
If Idaho’s counts, then Virginia also has a panhandle
You forgot the PA panhandle on Lake Erie between NY and OH: "The Delaware River forms the boundary between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In the northwest a small panhandle separates Ohio and New York and forms a 40-mile (65-km) waterfront on Lake Erie, giving the state access to the iron ore barges and other commerce of the Great Lakes." --Encyclopedia Britannica
The trouble with that one is most of the panhandle shape is on the lake rather than on land.
Florida doesn't have a panhandle, it is a panhandle lol
The British 6:36 screwed Canada by giving the US the Alaska panhandle.
Somebody from TX and OK can correct me, but I believe the Texas Panhandke gets its name for being underneatnthe Oklahoma Pandhandle, which is where the term "panhandle" in geography comes from.
Maryland was the seventh state admitted to the Union, not the thirteenth! People don't agree as to where the eastern panhandle of West Virginia begins or ends. Some regard only the three easternmost counties as the panhandle, while others view it as consisting of eight counties. The reason the three easternmost counties are part of West Virginia have more to do with the strategic importance of the B&O railroad than the federal armory in Harpers Ferry.
When he said that about MD, I thought that was incorrect 😁
