▶ In this video I talk about the "Special Relationship" that exists between some countries. How the concept first emerged with the United States & United Kingdom and how it has, since, been applied to many other nations. Usually connecting world powers with countries in areas they seek to influence - such as China and Albania - but also at times connecting those with a common past (such as old colonizers and old colonies, i.e. Portugal and Brazil), or those with a common identity - such as Albania and Kosovo. There are, however, some odd cases. Like the proximity between Turkey and South Korea, which goes back to a specific historical event that we learn about here.

The oldest alliance between two countries is between England and Portugal dating back to 1386. And it is still active to this day.
United Kingdom and Portugal.
@@DeSlagen8 it was just England in 1386 it only became a "United" kingdom i. the 1700s when Scotland joined
Wouldn't call it a special relationship, though. Not all of the examples in this video necessarily have a comprehensive alliance. Portugal and the uk's relationship is basically just diplomatic, they don't really exchange culture.
Ew england
You say this but Britain basically betrayed Portugal in the 1890s, even sending it an ultimatum, not allowing it to have colonies in Africa at the expense to British interests
You missed one of the biggest ones! Canada and the US. Customs in US airports have two lines, one is Canadian and American citizens and the other is all other nationalities. Canada also enjoys the most laid back visa policy into the US and I believe vice versa as well.
He didn't miss he choose other states. There is at least 52 relationships
Australia and New Zealand. Anzac bond
And biscuit!
🇳🇿❤️ 🇦🇺
We will remember them o7
As an Albanian I would put 130 countries before China in terms of Special Relationships. Kosova is a brother state, USA, Italy, UK, are great partners, Turkey, Germany and Austria are important partners etc. Hell you could put USA as a special partner since we are the most pro-US nation polled worldwide
Are you fine with British & American media and public perceptions viewing your group as Italian wannabes, With the Albanian mafia and Albanians running Italian restaurants?
130 you sure?
It’s the 2nd economy
There’s no way 130 before China
Doesnt China also have a special relationship with Serbia over shared tragedy of embassy bombing and economic ties too? very convoluted😂
Finland and Sweden have an extremely close historical and real-time relationship to the point that we didn't want to join NATO without Sweden and they didn't want to leave us behind
then people jokingly make fun of each other to hide we're in love, it's kind of cute.
I’ve heard that Sweden and Norway don’t have a close relationship despite their similarities. Is their any truth in that?
@@larissatom6910 No. Norway and Sweden have a very good and close relationship.
For example, as a Norwegian, there are countries that don't have a Norwegian embassy/consulate but have a Swedish one. If I am in such a country I would get official aid from the Swedish embassy.
Also moving between countries is super easy, since Nordic passport convention of 1952. Any nordic citizen can just move to another nordic country for any reason, and after living in the other country for 3 months, they have complete citizen rights automatically
Generally, when there is trouble, the Nordics usually stick together.
I knew my homeland had close political ties with Portugal but I had no idea this concept of special relationship existed between the two of us.
Sim.
Technically not a country but the Cherokee people have a special connection to Ireland. They donated money to try to help the Irish during the Great Potato Famine
Well, they are a nation.
Wasn't that the Choctaw?
sweden and finland could maybe have one because sweden helped finland the most in the winter war and both applied to nato at the same time
Other special relationships:
Pakistan and turkey
Azerbaijan and Pakistan
Armenia and Greece
Italy and Greece
Uk and portugal
Truks turn christian when a Pakistani calls them muslim brother
Turkey never gave any special acknowledgment to Pakistan what are you on about
Yes, definitely UK and Portugal. In 1373 they signed the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance. The oldest still in force in the world.
Does Palestine and Ireland count?
@@BasedEna yes definitely
You need that 1M subscribers! Um milhão!
Lichtenstein and Switzerland might also ba a special relationship dut to Lichtenstien using the Swiss Frank, having military protection (I think) and sharing cultural similarities and language.
General Knowledge, Subscribed because your videos always make me smile!
I would say Italy and Argentina, Italy and Malta, Poland and Japan, Brazil and Japan, Poland Hungry, Monaco with Italy and France.
And much more.
Especially the last, Monaco is basically one of the few remaining Italian States.
Monaco native language is Monaquesque, which is entirely Italic and almost no difference from Genoese.
The main family/the royal family of Monaco is the Grimaldi Family, one of the more common Italian surnames.
Brazil and japan’s is crazy
Japan just refusing Polish declaration of war ❤️
Poland-Hungary, we celebrate Polish-Hungarian friendship day in March in Poland. I don’t think any other country has a day that they celebrate a friendship with another country. And Hungarians get given preferential treatment in Poland.
Interesting stuff. Glad you made a video on this 😊
Turkey and Azerbaijan
Czechia and Slovakia
Czechia and Israel
Sweden and Finland
USA and Canada
Germany and Austria
Lithuania and Taiwan
Poland and Hungary
Romania and Bulgaria
Finland and Estonia
He did a video about the continuing bromance between Czechia and Slovakia following their 'Velvet Divorce'.
Great video. Congrats
Would love a video on Brazil & Japan.
Love from brazil!
Good video
Did you forget Russia and Belarus? They are closer than UK and US.
That is less of a partnership though and more of a subjugation. There are many articles about how Belarus’ president/dictator fears invasion if they do not cooperate with Russia.
@@jacobbwalters8133 any links for that or just more propaganda?
The relationship between China and Albania is really interesting.
China called Albania "The only beacon of true socialism left in Europe" and also said "If the USA or USSR dare to touch Albania in the slightest then they would face the full might of the Chinese"
Should have included Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Switzerland is responsible for their defense, Liechtenstein uses their currency, and their consulate usually also represents Liechtenstein
Brasil is also the only place outside of Europe to have had a European capital because the Portuguese crown moved the capital to Rio
EPIC
There is the often spoken about "Five Eyes" intelligence sharing arrangement between USA, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand
Fun fact about the special relationship between Italy and the Vatican: the first Italian head of state recognized by the Vatican was Mussolini 😊
Russian sphere of influence on the Balkans paints the Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia North and Republic of Srbska/BIH.
Albania is NATO, Kosovo too. Albania got it's first NATO 50 mil $ air base.
Albania moved his embassy to the Jerusalem, Israel recognized separation of Kosovo.
They are both in US cooperation aid program.

The fact that you didn't mention Czechia and Slovakia is weird 😂
there is also some interesting groupings of countries with special relations, all the countries in the five eyes have special relations with each other another look at special relations may be from history like how WW1 was also called the cousins war as leaders of the UK, Germany and Russia were all cousins.
I thought you would talk about the relationship between Andorra and it's two neighbors or between Switzerland and the Lichtenstein
Where's the ANZAC's? Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia have a long lasting "special relationship" too!
Yes I agree! Those countries are about as close as it gets for two seperate nations.
Portugal and Brazil definitely do not have that special bond. Portugal does have a special bond with former colonies and its actually surprising to me that many of the african countries natives like us so much, since war ended in '74, but brazilians are always complaining about Portugal/portuguese and do not have, generally, a good image inside Portugal. There's no brotherhood, unfortunately
Two of my favorite international relationships is between Brazil 🇧🇷 and Italy 🇮🇹, and Mexico 🇲🇽 and The Philippines 🇵🇭 😊
I would like to know a bit more about the Portugal-Brazil relationship, specifically how does each country stereotype the other. Or are they respectful?
France🇨🇵 & Greece🇬🇷
They have an official bilateral defense pact (which is rare enough to be highlighted)
There are some details about these that would have been nice. For example, for the Vatican and Italy, the most obvious fact that Italy is a nation of mostly Catholics adds to the relationship. While obvious, I'm shocked that wasn't mentioned. Second, for India and Israel, for the Hindu people of India, the relationship makes a lot of sense. Hindu Indians live in a country with a ton of Muslims (and the relationship between Hindus and Muslims in India is not getting any better), so it makes sense that they would bond with another people, Jews, surrounded by hostile Muslim nations.
Countries with territorial disputes (2024)
You forgot the most obvious special relationship between countries: Poland and Hungary
My favorite special relationship I just learned about was Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The Saudis helped fund much of Pakistan's nuclear weapons program, and there are rumors that the two nations may have a secret nuclear arms sharing agreement.
You didn't mention anything about Vatican state and Mussolini
or Vatican state and the Nazi regime...
I was a little surprised that countries with a free association agreement weren't included: the United States with F. S. Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau (all sovereign states); and New Zealand with two non-sovereign states (the Cook Islands and Niue).
vassal states arent real country.
@@rizkyadiyanto7922 None of the countries mentioned are vassal states as the term is understood historically. None of the Oceanian countries mentioned pays tribute to its free association partner or conscripts citizens into the partner's military service ... two typical aspects of a vassal state relationship.
Given that they are not vassal states, there seems no reason to refute your claim that they are not "real countries," whatever personal definition you have for that term.
Mexico and Ethiopia is interesting 🇪🇹🇲🇽
I may add a few more, mainly from Europe:
Czech Republic and Slovakia - common history and similar language
Russia and Belarus - colonizer and colonized
Romania and Moldova - similar language
Albania and Kosovo - common religion and history
Greece and Cyprus - colonizer and colonized
Latvia and Lithuania - common history and similar language
Finland and Sweden - common history
Great video. My point, the US/UK relationship must surely be the gold standard for any definition of any special relationship between any two nations. Why? As of 2023 the UK and USA are the largest investors in each other's economies which facilitate trade for the world's 2nd and 4th largest trading nations respectively. What's more, they purchase each others debt, of which the UK is the second largest buyer after Japan, vis-à-vis Bermuda and the Cayman islands and independent overseas British territories. Furthermore, the UK and USA have the first and second largest overseas military bases which is mutual, and they both certainly know a thing about the logistics of being a real global superpower. Additionally, the two countries are the top global softpowers in 2024, the first and third largest scientific research, the first and second largest service exporters, the second and third largest FDI in and out; suffice to say the list is extensive. A salient final point on the special relationship between the USA/UK, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland trades more dollars than the US does itself which further cements the Dollar's primary currency 💲 status and leaves no question in any special relationship with London and New York also being the two richest cities in the world and some of the largest city economies.😮
I would add Serbia and Montenegro, they have one of the most special and interesting realitonships in the world.
Црна Гора и Србија то је једна фамилија ☦️🇲🇪❤️🇷🇸☦️
How dare you not mention polish-hungarian brotherhood?
suprised you didnt talk about vn and laos
Omitting US-Israel relationship is crazy. Widely considered to be a unique relationship without precedent in modern history in its nature.
An interesting fact about isreal-india relationship is that a common tradition of newly released isreali soldier to travel to india looking to have good time ot to find spirituality
No France and Germany? After 1k years of generational warfare (on average once every 20 years) we formed an official treaty of friendship after ww2, shared our most industrious region and kick-started the EU with it.
At least in Germany to this day France is seen as our complimentary part of the "European engine" and we have a lot closer interaction, planning and cooperation with them than with any other nation including our Austrian brother-nation
Red Star is missing on North Korea’s Flag in this graphic? 0:41
This is done for CZcams reasons so the video doesn't get demonetized.
thats laos flag, not korea.
@@Redoestimate1988 If that is the case why was China’s flag not changed as well?
Portugal and Spain are close enough to make it to the next list?
Frenemies?
China has a closer relationship with Czechia and Serbia than it does with Albania tho, that's like saying East Germany and N. Korea had a close relationship cus they both looked up to the USSR
Scotland and France have a special relationship known as the Auld Alliance. Scotland also has special relations with Canada.
Andorra with France and Spain
You missed the star in the nk flag
Kim Jong Un is PISSED.
General knowledge can we have a special relationship
8:25 finno-Korean hyper war
Canada and the US due to proximity and to the number of cross border families like mine.
Austria and Germany, brother like behavior.. we hate us but when it comes to the worst we stand by each others side
With the Vatican, you could have mentioned how the modern relationship came to be through agreements between the Catholic Church and Mussolini’s Italy…
The South Korea-Turkey relationship is extremely unintuitive. Thank you, I don't think I would have every known that.
How does north korea and Russia not share a special relationship?
The ussr and America forcefully divided korea.
Russia was the one who helped start north korea.
North korea also is now sending military support to Russia now .
So I don't agree with that bit.
Otherwise great video
The oldest alliance makes it a special relationship and you forget Portugal and Spain. Common history, political proximity, commerce, portuguese politicians call them "nuestros hermanos" our brothers... How much more special can you be?
ohhh special relationships
It has been my observation that many English speaking/Commonwealth Countries have strong opinions about the UK, either for or against. That would include Australia and Canada, both countries I have spent significant time in. However, in the USA the split is between those who love the UK and those who are indifferent. Very few actually have any animus towards the UK. Sometimes I will hear the UK referred to as the "mother country," even by people with no British lineage. The Royal Family is followed closely in the US. The Premier League is watched more than MLS (but not as much as the NFL, NBA, MLB, and probably the NHL.) The US legal system is based on "English Common" law. Our university systems were originally modelled after Scotland's. (Then German influence later on). "American as apple pie" is not totally true as English (& Dutch) colonists brought pies to the USA. Cheddar cheese is an ingredient in American cheese. American football developed from Rugby. Baseball developed from cricket and rounders. The financial industry in NYC and London are VERY closely linked. As an American, I think the first 180 to 190 years as a colony of England then the UK, the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, and finally the "Special Relationship" in the 20th and now 21st centuries allowed Americans to either appreciate our ties to the UK, or take it for granted without thinking too much about it. In contrast, in other parts of the English speaking world, the UK was either the "best thing that ever happened" or "the UK is holding us back and the source of our problems."
why didn't you include Japan and the UK? 2 island nations? Before WW2, the UK helped Japan with some infrastructure and stuff like trains, which is why Japan drives on the left like the UK since their trains also go on the left influenced by the UK. Even some of Japan's earliest battleships were built by the UK. And they had good relations as the UK wanted Japan to contain the Russians on the far east. Now today, they are even collaborating on a next gen fighter jet.
WW2 definitely hindered this, being allied with Germany. That is relatively recent history.
@@DeSlagen8 even after ww2 UK and Japan had good relations, the UK royal family and Japan's Imperial family had a lot of exchanges during the 1960-90s. The UK along with the USA was one of the ones that supported Japan being part of the G7, with France and Italy against, and Germany neutral. And like I said, right now Japan and the UK are developing a new next-gen fighter jet alongside Italy.
As an Indian, i can say only country you can say as special relation though it is still not true is Japan. I see Isreal as strategic relation possible due to history and facing similar challenges.
In reality India has no special relation with any country as a result of non-aligned movement.
How about neighbors who hate or dislike each other-mainly those adjoining each other?
It is interesting China is also very close with Serbia, and is steadfast that Kosovo is Serbia
0:29 Why is the flag of North Korea censored?
They had what hangry had it seems from the video.
Also Ireland and palestine, my favorite of these special relationships. They have a joint anthem.
Mostly just talking about run-of-the-mill alliances here
Poland and japan is one
All countries have special relationships with each other, as no diplomatic relationship is the same.
Venezuela and Haiti has (well I guess had now 😢) a long relationship and i guess it would be considered "special" relationship.
For starters: The first Venezuelan flag was made in Haiti.
Britain (well, England) and Portugal have the oldest alliance in the world
3:55 Just a small correction, there was a war of independence between Brazil and Portugal, but it was not a conflict on the same scale as other wars of independence, due to the geopolitical situation and internal disputes in Brazil and Portugal at the time.
Because it was a relatively bloodless and quick war, some historians in the period immediately after Brazil's Independence declared that "there was no war" as a way of creating internal cohesion, and this narrative has persisted to the present day.
Latvia - Lithuania - Estonia
Why did you choose to ignore Ireland and Mexico?
Next time you can talk about Brazil and Japan. Relation
A polytheist nation (India 🇮🇳) supporting a monotheistic nation who had a problem with idol worship before Christ (Israel 🇮🇱). Strange.
Because they're both of indigenous faith. And they both opposed the Muslims who built their empire through conquest and have been an existential threat to their indigenous cultures since time immemorial. Your points are superficial and insignificant in the light of those that I just mentioned.
lmao "Israel" and indigenous culture. Giving so much credit to an US vassal state and a settler colonial and genocidal project is hilarious.
