Baking soda will not remove bacteria. Vinegar will not remove bateria. You need to sanitize the disposal with chlorine bleach.
The sink garbage disposal must be cleaned regularly because food, scraps, and debris get stuck inside and will start to smell very bad.
This technique makes use of ice to cause and abrasive cleaning action on the inside of your garbage disposal. You will combine ice, water, and soap first to remove the large food debris. Then you will use bleach to sanitize and kill germs and bacteria which grow inside the garbage disposal.

OH My GAWD! My ice turned dark dirty and chocked up....I could smell my garbage disposal across my kitchen and immediately the smell went away with the dirty ice water....thank you you just saved ma $100 for hiring a plumber!!
Mine turned a dark brown I was like ewwew lol
I'm wondering how you know the color of the waste water? It's inside the pipe right?
Eric Qu There is a slow process of liquid going through the drain so it swells up into the sink and because it is crushed ice it turns the ice and water the same color as the junk in your disposal..
Jennifer Freeman oh i see. I can smell it from the screen

Oh My GOD !!! You are the Man!!! I Can't believe just how easy that was. Step by Step, You Saved me HUNDREDS of Dollars. I've been in Construction for 30 years I've owned & renovated 4 houses of my own. When it comes to Plumbing & Electrical, I Hate those 2 Trades. Now, at almost 57, I've sustained 8 back injuries & I now have SEVERE Arthritis, so messing around under the sink is Not something I want to do. Between Fixing it, Cleaning it & Sanitizing it, this Whole 10 minute Process was "On Point." Thanks So Much !!!
The sink was smelling up the whole kitchen. Followed your instructions and it worked like a charm! Smell immediately gone. Thank you!!!!
I don't even have one what am I doing here
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol.
pfft
Cracking up 😂
😂😂
O my goodness I made garlic shrimp last week and my garbage disposal smelled like fish and garlic. It was horrible but using this technique worked like a charm!!! Thanks a lot! I subscribed
Wow I tried this my ice got dirty & my sink clogged up a little but kept the disposal running, and it went down. I was really impressed. I will be doing this every time I need to clean my garbage disposal. Thank you so much for this great tip..
Thanks Jake for this simple trick. It worked like a charm!
Great way to clean the disposal. I am pleased with this method!
Excellent informational video. You were clear, and made it easy to follow. Bravo.
Great advice and the ice works and I also used lemons at the end to freshen the smell
Forgot something. The bottom side of the rubber guard. Use a brush and comet cleanser. If you don't it gets a thick black goo that stinks. I use ice cubes too. But before I do I pour Borax washing soda in the drain and let it sit a few minutes. Then ice and turn on the cold water and turn on the disposal.
Worked sooo good! There was yucky brown water as it crushed up. Feels good to get it nice and clean. Thanks!
This 100 percent truly worked. Before this video I had tried boiling water and pouring it down my disposal, adding baking soda, vinegar etc. but none of those worked. Finally, my disposal doesn’t smell awful. Thank you so so so much!!
Thanks for the simple tutorial!
Thank you for sharing this. It worked!!!
Saved my disposal! Thank you so much!
Oh my goshhh!!!!!!!!! You saved my pregnant nose!!! I love you, i love you, i love youu! May the highest of highs bless your every desire!
very effective, thank you so much
Great !! It worked well for me ..Thank you very much!!
Wow! Thank you so very much. Very helpful!
Great instruction, thank you!
Heard of the ice truck before but the bleach soak is a nice addition. Well done!
Ice works very well. Also those soaps from hotel stays works well too. Toss in one of two give it a whirl and hey presto!
Trying it today!!!!! Thanks!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I had already scrubbed and used baking SODA and vinegar but it still wasn’t clean. As soon as that ice went in, I literally had particles flying out. So much cleaner!
I'm new to this, but I would imagine the way the physics work, you could combine the baking soda/vinegar in water with your ice to really spread those around abrasively to touch all the little bitty disposal innards with more force. :)
Thanks! This really helped a lot! Next time I do this I'll probably do it with ice and distilled vinegar to sanitize it while it's crushing the ice.
Simply put, it works! I would give you two thumbs-up if I could. 👍👍
Wow thanks for the tip!
God bless you, this is my first apartment with a Garbage and it was smelling. I use bleach and my lemon distergent to wash.. You have really taught me things i did not know what to do... Thanks
Thanks for sharing!
That was very helpful, thank you. I also found that using a long-handled scrub brush and getting your hand down there ( if it’s small enough) with a soapy sponge helped too. Thanks!
You're not suppose to stick your hand down a garbage disposal!!!! Good grief!!!
You'll want to physically disconnect power to it if sticking your hand in there.
Unplug the power (or turn off the fuse if connected), verify it is off by turning on the switch you normally would use to make sure it doesn't turn on, flip the switch to off, and then it is safe to access.
Physically disconnecting the power helps prevent it turning on and checking the switch/button normally used is to verify that power is not active.
You'll want to ensure that anybody else who is in the room/house/apartment is aware of the work so they don't accidentally reconnect power.
8/29/20: will be trying this one...best one I've seen thus far.
Thank You this helped big time 😀🌴
Never thought of using ice, good idea. I have used a similar technique using either coffee grounds or kosher salt.
Coffee did it for me
My new apt had a disposal with a manual. It said not to put coffee grounds in a disposal for any reason.
Coffee grounds are really bad for a disposal though. I used to put them in the drain until it completely clogged it up. Then i found out thats a huge no-no. ope.
This worked great, thank you!
Dude, you the man! Thank you bro
THANK YOU!!! I COULDT FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO. THEY HAVE ALL THESE PODS. BUT AN ADDED EXPENSE I DONT NEED! Going to try now!!! 😁😄😄
Thank you!
This is the best fix ever. I tried baking soda and vinegar. (Like everyone else.) That didn’t work. With your video the smell is gone. I was about to spend way too much money on a plumber for a very easy fix.
Thanks for this tip, it worked
Great video! The only thing to change would be about the bleach; other videos and articles say that can corrode the blades. Instead, for a similar effect, you can let baking soda sit in the garbage disposal for an hour then rinse it down with vinegar, then run water with the garbage disposal on for a minute.
Ya. I've done the baking soda & vinegar for freshness. Bless the person who made
"Baking Soda" (is it a natural substance? I really don't know)The uses of
which seem endless 🎁
Just an FYO to anyone who might feel like this doesn’t work, vinegar and baking soda cancel each other out. It’s good to use one or the other not both at the same time!
*FYI
@@danielleabashe4000 wow I did not know that! Thank you!
A "thumb up" simply for the sense of humor at the beginning! I'll now watch the rest of the video...
That was great!
THANK YOU!!
Thank you!!
Never had garbage disposal moved in apartment with one I'm definitely going try .
This worked so great.....my ice turned brown from crud and the smell is now gone....Thanks!!
Great video.
Great video. 🍋 Lemons too
Just tried this after realizing I had gnats living in there. I will now be covering the disposal with a food trap
Made my day! 👍🏿
I'm trying it now!!
That's a good idea because my Shredder didn't want to even turn around probably cuz it has stuff stuck on it but thank you for showing me I did try it I'm going to leave it there for at least 30 minutes to see if the odor goes away thank you again
thank you so much
Thank you
Holy cow that is amazing! The water built up and started coming back up in the sink and was dirty and so nasty. But then I heard the line clear and it sucked all the gross water away! Thanks for the video.
Thanks!
I would also suggest scrubbing the rubber stopper frequently, if it pulls out easily. It makes a huge difference. I also put citrus rinds in there periodically. The main key is, don’t wait too long to clean it
Hi, Im planning to get one garbage disposal, woud you say is useful? thanks
@@andresdoria6118 yes
Ice worked amazing!
I barely use my disposal and the gunk hiding under the rubber seal looked like it was alive. Black nasty greasy. Thanks the ice trick with some lemon peels worked and I cleaned the gunk with gloves on and rags.
Good one brother. Glad you didn't sound like you were audutioning for a comedy routine. 👍
IT WORKS!
This was absolutely mind blowing 🤯 right up until the Bleach, the U.S Navy would like you to know how dangerous Bleach on Stainless Steel pipes it keep under lock and key on Ships. Use a different cleaner ,disinfectant and spread this gentleman's amazing advice 👏!
Another tip is to pour some Zoflora down the disposal drain every once in a while. It disinfects and leaves the disposal smelling pretty nice.
Thanks
great info !!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Ice works awesome to get the brown coffee stains off of metal coffee pots. Just put some in there and spin the ice in a circular motion. Did that in the Navy a LOT, to clean pots.
Wait, exactly go step by step. I always look for ways that I don't have to use chemicals but natural resources to kill bacteria and cleansing surfaces
@@NoriaMarieBeauTeyMafia - Sure thing! 1) Hold coffee pot with weak hand. 2) Put crushed ice in coffee pot. 3) Using both hands for safety, swirl pot (stainless pot). 4) Dump ice out in sink. 5) Rinse. 6) Look inside coffee pot. 7) Be amazed at how easy that was. I hope that helps. If you like, I can break it down into twice as many steps if you still don't understand.
@@YourFutureEx thanks if you got any more secrets..shoot them to me anytime!
Does it work with a large quantity of popcorn kernels
Lemons are great for a fresh clean smell 😊
I have a bad gnat problem, do you think this will help?
Great video and seems very easy to do however, I would like to point out that bleach is very corrosive and can leave pitting in metal. If one does decide to use bleach dilute it first with water 50/50 solution should be adequate. Hydrogen peroxide would be my choice as far as killing the bacteria and the key to using this is total contact with the product and more importantly is the contact time. The longer the better and doing this a couple of times is not out of the question.
Hydrogen Peroxide would possibly be getting into the air after afterwards and you'd be inhaling it which is not good.
Ice, I have to try this THANK U
The ice helps to 'scrape' build-up of greasy stuff on the blades that nothing else will touch.
Ice.. the bet way to go. Not only does ice grind up smoothly (not causing damage to the unit) like a chicken bone, but it also is just hard enough to sharpen & clean the blades while removing debris from the sides. No need to buy those packages for $$ when ice does it just as good. Add a lemon peal if you want freshness.
Worked without the bleach, thank you.
Your right about the rubber at the top, but mine will pull out easily, which makes cleaning the thing much easier. It gets very nasty on the bottom side.
So true!
I've taken my disposal out a couple of weeks ago to get it to work again, only to realize all that gunk has cause it to severely rust out!
So how often should I clean the new one with this method, to avoid problems?
@@jhawkins4412 I generally clean mine once a month, unless I smell an odor, then I do an extra time. After doing this, they also make a disposal cleaner, it's like a pack of powder stuff. You run hot water on about the size of a pencil, turn on disposal, and drop in pack, it creates a lot of foam cleaner that comes up from both sides of the sink for a couple minutes, then you just rinse it down. I do this if I smell a bad odor. It helps it smell good too. Good luck!
I wish my rubber guard came out. I use Comet cleanser and a stiff brush to clean the underside. It gets gross!
Gonna try ice!! I poured bleach down it only last night...
I did this and at first, was afraid that I killed it!!! . Saw lots of black gunk but then the disposal just stopped. Then thought that maybe I put in too much ice and maybe it 'froze up. Waited 5 min, flushed it with hot water...nothing. But then, the maintenance guy said to hit the reset button!!! It works! Clean disposal and no smell. I think the thing is don't use too much ice.
The amount in the video seems to be a compromise if your ice maker just happens to make a good amount of ice. Don't use too much.
the ice trick really helped me unclog my kitchen sink . thanks so much bc the plunger was not doing it for me. lady alone with a stupid disposal.......
Amazing video! Worked like a charm for me. I was worried at first when the water and ice came back up disgustingly dirty and smelly, but then the sink cleared up and the water drained away! My sink hasn't smelled this great in years! THANK YOU!!!
Did not work but it gives me a great idea.
If you don’t believe me just smell your sink up close.
The rubber guard can be removed/replace with new one, cost $4 (just pull it out with your hands). It is not worth cleaning it.
I completely removed the garbage disposal, there is no need for one just be mindful when you’re cleaning your dishes.
However, thank you for the video, your video does helped for cleaning it but did not solved completely the problem.
Thank you again! :)
thanks dad!
This is a good idea. I usually throw a lot of baking soda in, some dish soap, lemon juice, and then vinegar and it all bubbles up. Smells really good after but I might do this first.
Beware that the Bleach can eat through the rubber flaps....happened to me. Also: Use a scrubbing cloth soaked and loaded with something like Soft-Scrub and reach your hand partly through the opening and then up...under the rubber flaps and scrub there and downward. If your rag does not come up 'black', let us know. Ha....Repeat....
I use cleanser, like Comet and a brush and it's nasty black goo!
It's a good idea to unplug your disposal unit or otherwise disconnect power when reaching in there for safety purposes.
smells like new😍
Found this out today by mistake just grinding up old ice. The stuff that came out of the disposal 🤮!
It was the source of the smell the whole time!
Excelente tips, thanks works wonderful
You can use lemon or limes cut up in small chunks with ice and Borax washing soda. Don't forget the underside of the rubber guard. Or you'll always have a stinky drain. Comet cleanser and a stiff brush. Cuz it's nasty!!
Does Red Bull not freeze or are you just chilling it quick???
Great idea! Tried it....busted my garbage disposal....currently cleaning up water out of my kitchen floor...lol. Fml
😫
Ice is what my manual says.
You must have had an old disposal that someone before you abused badly. Like chicken bones or something. And rusted out maybe also. People think they can put anything in them.
if your disposal cant handle ice its definitely good time to upgrade anyway
same thing happened to me, disposal sprang a leak of the bottom, now I have to replace the disposal; I wish I hadn't read this post. Sheesh
Sir, when I tell you I gasped 😳 Thank you! Guys THIS WORKS 💪
I’m gonna try this tomorrow because of the smell 👃😎 I wish it will help 🤲
I wanna know is where did you get that switch. Looks like you could hit it with a bat and not brake.
That switch can be bought at any home improvement store. If you have one with the typical narrow switch and it is next to another switch, for like a light over the sink, you may have to widen the box that's in the wall to make it fit. Ask the home improvement electrical specialist. Have fun!
its a standard "decora" switch. nothing exotic at all.
Have you not been to a Home Depot or Lowe's since the late 80s?
@@ryaneberly799 I'm saying it looks like shit
it's just a standard "new style" early 2000's paddle switch (idk wth it's called) but it's pretty common, i grew up with these
Thanx :) my dad is always busy and my grandpa died.. I didnt know what to do. Thank you so much..
I accidentally put a decent amount of dirt in the disposal...
Also..how much food is acceptable or unacceptable to be putting in there...
Just wondering..🙄🤔
It's not so much, of how much as it is how much at one time! 🤗
The key is to feed it in slowly, giving it time to grind up waste and send it through the plumbing, and not packing the poor thig all at once!
🤣🤣🤗
Experience talking here! Lol
@@jhawkins4412 however yours works i guess. the more powerful it is the better it is at getting rid of stuff older low end models (like this kenmore/ise badger in the video) is very rusted out so i'd say a little and if it jams or clogs(or generally complains, buzzing obnoxious clacking/breaking noises ect) than you know what it's limits are
Ice doesn’t dull the blades?
They actually sharpen the blades. I have a new disposal with a manual and it said that.
It also said no coffee grounds at all.
Worked well! my disposal smelled like a dirty diaper
Is this method approved by the disposal manufacturers
That rubber stopper should pull right up and cleaned!
Thank you very good explanations. I only have a question: Why most of men do not use gloves to do a dirty job like this?
I have a dishwasher connected to my sink so I’ll skip the bleach. I will try using Glisen foaming disposal cleaner and Ice cubes w/ vinegar and also orange pills.
Hi - I just moved into a house with a garbage disposal and dishwasher. I’ve never used either in my life. Can you explain why you won’t use bleach for the garbage disposal since your dishwasher is connected to the sink? I’ll appreciate that so much, I don’t want to mess up my new appliances
@@janeenpena151 actually I have an update. I have been using a splash of bleach in the dishwasher with every wash and it’s been great. No more smell on the clean dishes and no more smell from the disposal.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Lol why are you freezing Red Bull’s you bastard 😂😂
