I also pack baking soda around the ice and down into the disposal and then pour vinegar and let it foam up really good before turning on the water and the disposal. Smells great!
Dang it! Should have read comments before I did mine! I love cleaning with vinegar and baking soda-great idea! I did cut up a lemon and put it down the disposal after I cleaned with the ice.. it helps the smell too
This is a very helpful video. I have a double sink with a garburator and no matter what I did, it stunk. So I bought bag of ice and followed this video. Worked great! Chunks of black stuff came up the opposite sink drain, even though we don't use the garburator. But after this the smell still remained, but I was on the right track. Here's what I did to eliminate it completely. 1. Pour an entire box of baking soda down the garburator. Then hit it with just a splash of vinegar to get it fizzing. Not too much or you wash away the baking soda. Wait 24 hrs 2. Put the plug in the sink and fill it with two jugs of vinegar. The more the better. Turn on the garburator, pull the plug and let it all go through. You need a lot of vinegar to hit all the inside of the garburator. Wait 24 hrs 3. Plug the sink again and fill with hot water. Add two large full caps of Tide liquid laundry soap with Febreze. Turn on the garburator and let all the Tide go through. It now has no smell at all, except for a bit of the nice Tide scent!
Tried all those packaged stuff to clean and nothing worked - this ice trick is the absolute bomb - worked for me exactly as show in your video - big thank you for this neat trick !
I've been telling people to do this since the mid 90's. Very effective. The caveat: if your disposal is very old and had micro fractures in the body, it may die permanently. Should have been replaced anyway.
Lol. When I did the ice trick the first time I thought I fucked up the garage disposal because the black stuff came up. This was before I looked up any videos. Great to know this is normal. 😅😂
It only trips it because they are thermally protected motors. They just have a special fuse that will reset when it is cooled back down enough but still you will also most likely need to press a red button. Some disposals have a shaft that can be turned with an Allen key when they are jammed. Just make sure that it is not plugged in.
What about for ones when they aren't on permanently? Mine keeps building up mold even though we don't use it and don't dump stuff down that side of the sink.
I tell people at the complex where I work that don’t use their disposal to turn it on a couple of times a week for 30 sec or so and just run some ice through it if nothing else. This will help keep food particles coming from your dishwasher from “standing “ in the disposal and causing a smell. I also recommend people do once a month the same technique in this video, but I highly recommend they use a long wooden spoon or something like that to guide the ice into the disposal. Now, do 90% of the residents take my advice? Of course not, but with 235 units then 10% that do gives me 23 disposals less to worry about 🤷🏻♂️
I thought I dropped a fork down there so i unplugged it and stuck a magnet and now I have 2 impellors (i think) and a cruddy screw. What will happen if I plugged it back in without those 3 pieces of metal and turn it on. I am going to replace it but it is super gross (it broke before I saw your video). The P-trap fittings are tight - and I don't think I need impellors to clean it out with ice - but should I bother since Im replacing it - I don't want to deal with anything gross under the sink from cleaning it or replacing it - trying to avoid vomiting. thanks for not ending the video early and including the satisfying 3rd and final drain clearing... ;)
.......or you can shell out a few extra more bucks and get the higher quality garbage disposal that come equipped with internal stainless steel components instead of the cheap easy to rust out galvanized internals that everyone seems to rather buy instead.
Ok good hack but also my understanding is this is also good for the garbage disposal as it helps sharpens the blades. Also I don't like where your garbage disposal button is it just seems unsafe to me. Not sure where else ud put it. And maybe I'm wrong I dunno.
I did this and my disposal just gobbled all the ice like it was nothing. There was no backup and no dirty water that came up. I guess that either means my disposal is clean or it’s too powerful for this trick 😂
Dont bother with the chemicals, they dont work. It's disgusting what this does and that's a good thing. Had to do it four or five times, I dont think it had ever been cleaned before.
@Jason Davis this is easily the funniest shit I have ever seen on here....daddy bought you yours, if you have never seen a garbage you are either trolling, stupid, or live literally under a rock. In any of those cases you definitely need a daddy lol
Try this at your own risk. I tried this with ice tray cubes and now on my way to get a new garbage disposal. My husband is pissed at ne for not showing him this first. My garbage disposal is leaking from the bottom now. Ruined.
DO NOT TRY THIS!! I'm paying $400 for a new disposal and labor. It completely broke the plastic on the bottom of the unit. Don't be me, learn from my mistake.

This helps so much I have has this smell and it old just went away thanks to this
I know I couldn't believe the difference.

Thank you so much! First video that actually showed the finish (dirty water going down).
Thanks Debbie!
I love that sink. Thanks again
I really miss my sink that was like this one ☹️
@@Nikkole616 yea I miss so many little things from my previous house…. You know we getting older when we talk about sinks lolol

A king and strong flat head screwdriver can sometimes pry the blockage loose
Is that black stuff grease?
Yay! It worked 🤗 thanks!!!
Thank you. It worked perfectly.
Nice, glad it helped :)

Yes! Exactly! Apartments will not do this though despite the numbers
This works if you own the home. Snowball's chance in hell a landlord would upgrade an appliance.
THANK YOU FOR THE INFO BUT THAT WAS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE MOST TERRIFYING FEW MINUTES OF MY LIFE.
Thanks!

Nothing is ‘safe’ these days. I personally thing it’s fine
Ok so if it trips the garbage disposal how do I fix it
Reset button on bottom of disposal
Would this also unclog the garbage disposal?
Probably not
Satisfying!
Yes it is!!
No joke that worked!
Nice!
Vinegar and baking soda
I apparently do that technique by dumping the ice in the garbage disposer while it is running. Doing this can clean the garbage disposal even faster.
I did this and my disposal just gobbled all the ice like it was nothing. There was no backup and no dirty water that came up. I guess that either means my disposal is clean or it’s too powerful for this trick 😂
curious, what's the HP on your disposal is it greater than 1/3 ?
@@ApartmentMaintenancePro it says “1/2 horsepower”
@@videostosleepwith1923 I haven't tried this with a 1/2 HP disposal yet. Might be chewing up the ice too fast to cause the effect seen in the video
If you need this much ice , you need one with more hp!
Is it ok to do this if you are a 15 year old person with no experience in plumbing?
Ask your parents.

I wonder how much that’s going to cost me… ☹️
You should have replaced it.

Ugh fun times. They need to say alert alert this is a possibility.
Why not just reach into the drain with a paper towel and wipe the inside of the disposal clean?
Probably not the best idea to condone sticking your hand down a disposal. Especially if you have a 1/2HP or more motor
Yea dont do this ice thing, you'll break your garbage disposal. You can crack the housing and it will leak.
Thanks for watchin!
