Garbage Disposal Cleaning, Sharpening, and Common Cause of Failure

  • If your garbage disposal is not working it is very likely to be the victim of the most common reason why garbage disposals fail. Which is the lack of use! When a garbage disposal is not used for a long time, it will start to lock up, freeze, or rust. Next time someone goes to turn it on, they may be greeted with only a hum instead of the wonderful sound of chopping and grinding. To prevent the disposal from failing prematurely, remember to exercise it regularly. In this video I also go over 4 more tips about cleaning, disinfecting, sharpening the blades, and how to eliminate bad odors.

    If the unit is jammed, you can manually clear it. Take the Allen wrench that came with the unit, stick it in the little hole underneath, and turns in both directions until it spins freely. If the unit is jammed and runs too long, the Reset Button will pop and will need to be pressed in for the unit to run again. If the unit spins free but still only just hums, the unit is bad and it should be replaced entirely.

    Great video! Love your content. I have seen nails, screws, beer bottle caps, a bar of soap (shook the entire countertop), but my favorite was Aquarium rocks. Resetting the GFI that is within a couple of feet of the dishwasher is always my favorite.
    Number 1 mistake I see is no high loop in the dishwasher drain hose. When draining a full sink the water drains through the disposal into the dishwasher drain hose and fills the dishwasher up until water is pouring out on the floor from the dishwasher.

    I think most people know about the Allen key and reset buttons. It was interesting to know about the knock-out plug for the dishwasher. Some people use the garbage disposal and do not have a dishwasher. So the disposal would need the inlet for the dishwasher tube to be closed. Great tips on maintaining and keeping it clean and odor free

      @@WordofAdviceTVI know about the rest button, but could you explain the GFI(?) where and what it is and how to use an Allen wrench and where on the garbage disposal?
      Also, what causes the rattling noise that makes it sound like something is loose. I don’t remember it always sounding that way. Will try all the tricks for cleaning maintenance.
      One thing Ive been doing for years…you can clean the inside/underside of the black flaps (splashguard) of the drain with paper towels. It’s shocking how much junk accumulates there, but if you do this monthly it stays relatively clean. Adding the baking soda and vinegar mixture to the paper towels aids in getting the gunk off of them. Definitely recommend using gloves for the first cleaning. That rotten food accumulation is probably half the problem as far as disposal odors go.

    Someone once told me it is good for the garbage disposal to run used coffee grounds through it often. I never knew if that was true but it never seemed to hurt. Maybe it was more a matter of using it often. My son fixed my garbage disposal once, and said never put heavy starches down it, like pasta or oatmeal. Later, we added to that, never run a bunch of potato peelings down the disposal. Automatic fails.

      @@andrewgabrielli8787 so on the bottom of the unit under the sink there is a hole that the key fits into and it allows you to manually turn the disposal. So if it’s really stuck run hot water and soap into the disposal, keep it off, and stick the Allen key into the hole and work it back and forth an inch or two until it frees up. Then take out the key and turn it on and let it run for a while. Should be good at that point. If you take a flashlight to the bottom of the unit you will see where the key goes.

    There's a commonly held misconception that egg shells or ice can help to sharpen the "blades" of your garbage disposal. But the truth is, garbage disposal don't have blades. Rather, they have impellers that are more blunt than sharp. These impellers grind food waste down, rather than chopping it up like a blender.

    • @WordofAdviceTV

    • @rickneckar3389
      @rickneckar3389 Před 2 lety +2

      Actually the impellers don’t really chop the food either. They are used to throw the food against the side walls where the grind rings are which grinds the food down and the water washes them down and out of the outlet drain.

    • @jeffw8057
      @jeffw8057 Před 2 lety

    There are no blades to sharpen on any garbage disposal I have ever seen. Garbage disposals have blunt pieces of metal that spin around loosely to mash up food that goes into the garbage disposal then forced out the sides through small holes. The only thing ice cubes do is make a lot of noise. I think you should take a look inside the next garbage disposal you work on. You did a great job on presentation though.

  • @americanstudyingrussian9062

    Great video like always!! I have a portable dishwasher that stopped draining a couple of days ago. Since it only hooks to the faucet & not to the disposal, what are the main problems that I should check first?

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  Před 2 lety +2

      I actually don't recall ever working on a portable one so unfortunately I am not sure what is most common with those.
      The first thing I would confirm is whether the dishwasher is not draining at all/pump not turning on or is it draining slowly and not all the way.
      If the pump does come on and it attempts to drain, then I would be looking for clogs in the filter/drain basket and if accessible, taking a look at the drain pump impeller to see if it's damaged. If the drain pump is not coming on at all, then it can be a few different things.. Such as a bad pump motor or pump motor not getting power (bad control board or timer). Unfortunately this is not something I would be able to diagnose for you in the comments though. I hope the above at least gives you some ideas. Good luck!

    Although all brands work well past their warranty date, I have found that my Badger (budget model) disposal fails earlier than other brands. That might be because I have a water softener which tends to RUST any metal (garbage disposal).

    When using a continuous feed WDU (unless it has a capacitor start motor larger units mainly) the machine should be On and Running with water (cool) before any food water is put in or it might overload. Batch Feed units can be switched on with waste food already in the chamber. Also the ice trick is a myth it may help with cleaning however will not sharpen blades/impellors

      The main issue with eggshells...is that the shells become lodged in the small crevices of the grinding cylinders (one fixed, other rotating)...and could make the resultant grinding less effective. Additionally, the decaying stuck eggshells may begin to smell. The exact same issue/consequence occurs with high fibrous fruit/veggies...such as celery. The fibrous strands become lodged into the grinding cylinder.

    • @WordofAdviceTV

      No problem, that's a normal question. Especially since there are only a few appliance repair schools left in the country. Most people that fix appliances learned on the job, not from school. I got lucky to get hired by a gas company that offered an appliance and HVAC repair service plan. I went to school only for HVAC and at this job I learned how to repair most of the other appliances. At first I only worked on furnaces, air conditioners, and water heaters. Then they added dryers. After I got familiar with dryers, they started giving me ranges/ovens/cooktops. Next were washing machine service calls. Last was refrigerators and dishwashers. (most technicians don't like working on those two the most). They also occasionally sent me to appliance repair trainings which were helpful too. As a bonus, I learned about the gas distribution side of the business too, did gas leak calls, carbon monoxide leak calls, gas meter replacements, etc.

    • @finaoo1167
      @finaoo1167 Před 2 lety

      If it's humming, but not spinning, try pouring a lubricant (e.g. mineral oil) into it, and let it sit for an hour or so, and then try to free it with the Allen wrench.
      If it's doing nothing at all, look for a reset button underneath. Press that and give it a try.

    pull out the black rubber shield from the disposal and flip it over and scrub off the gunk. a lot of times that why the disposal smells. its pretty gross what accumulates on there, its also good to clean under the seal of your dishwasher door because it gets the same slimy smelly gross build up.

      The last time that happened to me, there was actually something stuck under one of the impellers. So even though it worked fine, it was a lot louder than normal until I took out the little jammed piece. I would try looking around the blades to see if there's anything stuck there.

    Fill sink warm water. Get Clorox and Dish detergent. Now pour in generous amount clorox and dish detergent. Stir the sink full of water. Pull drain plug and immediately turn on garbage disposal. I have done this where all other tricks customers have tried failed. When I was done smells were gone and customers were saying now I don't need a new disposal.

      Check the type of dish detergent you are using before trying this. Some of them, like Dawn for instance, are not supposed to be mixed with bleach and can create noxious fumes.

    • @thesender6793
      @thesender6793 Před rokem

      Maybe true if used without water, but added to a sink full of water, they’re very diluted. Everyone has to use the precautions they believe are necessary. I will continue to mix both Dawn and chlorine bleach into the water.

  • @shawn13mertle13

    The blades on a disposal are not there to be sharp. They are dull for a reason. A disposal works by slinging the waste up onto the sides where it is designed to break up the waste. Next, never put citrus or anything else highly acidic to metal in your disposal. It will rust out the bottom real quick. I would suppose if you had a 1hp stainless insinkerator that might not be an issue. But those are a bit spendy. Most the other advice is ok. If you treat an Insinkerator 1/3-1/2 hp disposal decently it will last over 20 years.

    • @MAGAMAN
      @MAGAMAN Před 2 lety +1

      Unless you leave the citris or vinegar sitting in your garbage disposal or put it in every day, you won't have a problem. The water will rinse it out.

    • @shawn13mertle13
      @shawn13mertle13 Před 2 lety

      @@MAGAMAN Even just a couple of times a month will ruin a disposal. If you have ever taken one apart you would understand why. Hardly anyone clears the lower chamber on every use. So debris from your last grind is in there for a while. I have replaced enough of these where the client was putting citrus down the thing every other week. So as a plumber I will have to disagree with you based on experience.
