- This test was performed with a Tristar Viper G2 shotgun with a 26" barrel .
Most of the test we shot the Winchester Long Beard #6 shot , but we did shoot one round of Winchester #5s at 40 yards just to see how different it shot and because I have two boxes on hand . We shot at 40,50,60 yards just to see how it patterned . It was a very impressive patten even at 60 yards . If I was using my shot gun exclusively for turkey hunting, I would top it off with a scope . With all shotguns , each gun shoots a load differently and mine had the tendency to shoot the pattern to the left ,so, knowing that I will compensate to the right just a little when I take a shot . This combination of Winchester XR shells and Carlson's choke tube have made for a tight pattern.
Warning :If you shoot closer than 30 yards you better have your head down and have the barrel sight on target or you will miss .

I can tell you how it patterns, almost too tight to hunt with. Just make sure the gobbler doesn't get too close. Forty yards is plenty close.
I shoot 6s great load in my 1100 mag 3 inch. Great job with this video
The new improved shells like the Winchester XR and TSS shells produce very good results at 50-70 yards. I see more turkey hunters using red dot and reflex sight because these added ranges.
Winchester did tests, they concluded each pellet needs to retain 2ft lbs of energy to penetrate a turkeys head and or neck vertebra. they found #6 shot retains enough energy to do it out to around 35 yards, #5 shot maintained out to I think it was about 40- 45 yards.....so what ever you do don't shoot at a turkey with #6 anywhere near 60 yards (you are wasting a shell and might poke his eye out). you could google the "Winchester turkey penetration tests" results to find the article about the shot ballistics.
Bless you brother. You and I are on the same sheet of music. Winchester is exactly right. They several years ago cut the three Inch load down to one and three quarters of an ounce and upped the velocity to 1300 in many loads. That was because small shot at low velocity had too many failures.
I've taken 3 turkeys over 60 yards (62, 63, 64) using Long Beard XR. Last year it was only 54 yards and I was disappointed because I wanted a 70 yarder. (run out of time). The boxes say 60 yards on them, so I doubt Winchester would put that there is it wasn't capable. I skinned the neck of my farthest, which was 64 yards, and found holes completely through the neck bones and no shot in sight. Complete pass throughs. #4 and #5 are more than capable of killing turkeys over 45 yards. But use a scope to prevent just wounding them.
@@bgdesignandsolutions it has been discussed a lot on all the turkey forms, that winchester foolishly put on their box "with twice the pellets in a 10″ circle out to 60 yards" it does not say that the individual pellets retain enough energy to kill at 60 yards. they also dont mention what size shot, so you will have new hunters that dont know any better taking shots at 60 yards with #6 shot and "missing", of course WE know they didnt miss at 60 yards with a 6 foot wide pattern, they just wounded that bird irresponsibly, and it will become coyote food in a few days.... i guess broadhead marketers could put on their packaging "these broadheads will kill a running deer at 200 yards with your bow" while i guess it could happen (one in a million chance), its pretty irresponsible to advertise like that.
@@yourmomma2995 Speaking of broad heads, I have shot 2 turkeys with a bow that had to be shot 3 times each to kill them. Each one ran off and I had to track them down to finish the job.
I met a person last year who shot the 10" bearded one I was after with a crossbow. It ran off and he never found it, and neither of us ever saw it again.
I shot one 30+ years ago straight on with a broad head. It jumped in the air and flew straight up and away. Never found it.
Shooting a turkey at 60 yards with Long Beard is a far cry better than 20 yards with a broad head from a bow or cross bow.
But you're right, in the hands someone who doesn't care, a person can wound those around the one you're after.
I watch the videos close, and have seen more than one hit when shooting at the one they want. Sometimes I wonder if it went away or was it tagged as well.
Until the past few years, I mostly just used 1-1/4 oz #4 for turkeys. I even used steel shot as well. I took one goose hunting one day at 43 yards with #2 steel.
My farthest with light loads was 54 yards using a 1-1/8 oz at 1400 fps, home load #4.
My average distance is between 15-25 yards. My goal now is 70 yards, and it is very doable.
I have even taken doubles, and If you watch the video where I shot the one last year at 54 yards, you can see where a double was very doable, but I had to pass it up because I only had one tag.
If I would have waited for them to walk along, it would have only been about 22-24 yard shot. But I was after distance, and my 70 yards chance was blocked by brush, so I settled for 54 yards.
It took me a while to chase the shot with the dot too
You need adjustable sights start at 10 yards and adjust from there in the heat of the moment you will forget to hold right
Pop some adjustable sights on that bad boy and you’ll be in business!
I shot at gobbler this morning with the exact Winchester #5 in my Carlsons choke. 20 yards. Missed him . Guessing about 2 inch pattern. Like shooting a slug at close range. Finally got him with second shot. At close range you better realize it does not open up at all. Got my t shirt nice. GRIZ

Took my turkey this year passed 50 yards. Not sure exactly, but I held my red dot above his head and he fell... 2 oz reload of #5 lead moving 1230 FPS
I found out many years ago when the two ounce 3 inch loads and the three and a half inch loads of number 6s came out that hits don't automatically mean kills. The last Turkey I shot with a two ounce load of six shot was about 22 yards away. It killed the gobbler stone dead with between fifty and a hundred hits . The neck was not broken. During that time frame I talked with many hunters who had problems with gobblers getting up and running off and not recovered. When I saw those longbeard loads cut down to 1000 feet per second I said ain't no way. Advertised velocities are almost always inflated. Put that in the lopped off barrel of a turkey gun and stretch that to 60 yards and there is not enough velocity left to get the job done. I'm sure someone will comment they regularly kill turkeys with seven and a half shot further than that. If they can do that fine but if you launch number 6 shot at 1000 feet per second you will have problems past 40 yards. Tungsten pellets are a totally different ballgame. Since tungsten came on the market I've never had a problem with any shot size. If you want to shoot turkeys at long range skip lead all together and shoot tungsten.

Thank you for your reply. I don't mean to but sometimes I may sound a little abrasive. A friend of mine a few years ago passed on some shots past 50 yards. He had an old Remington 870 without screwin chokes and was shooting longbeard #4. I knew how his gun shot and how good the longbeard load was at 1200 fps. The last day of season he killed a 23 pound turkey that had three beards at 60 yards. The turkey fell dead at the shot. It was the turkey of a lifetime.
I've taken 3 over 60 yards with Long Beard XR with #4 and #5 shot. One shot drops, no problem.
I found the Pattern of the Shotgun ODD because I have never had my shot pattern shoot so Low ?? I have a red dot on my shotgun and it helps a great deal with putting the pattern consistently on/in the same place....Might consider getting a red dot...although I don't think most hunters shoot past 45 yards on a turkey....Good luck this season !!!
Do you have any issues with the longboard XR cycling through your semi auto ? I have a mossberg 9200 semi auto and it won’t cycle these shells. They look about 1/8” or so longer than any other 3” she’ll that I have. I can chamber a LBXR , it will shoot and eject just fine. Just won’t cycle the round from the magazine tube. They are just too long. I love the way they pattern so for now , I’ll just chamber a LBXR , then put two super X ‘s in the magazine . I’d like to know if anyone else with a mossberg 9200 has this issue.
You sure you're not loading 3 1/2's in there?
you need a red dot sight qnd adjust your pattern it'll help
Go with tss shells. Twice the range as Winchesters
put a red dot on the gun . so you can adjust the sight !
Long beard is slow part of the reason it patterns good and #6 looses energy at that distance,I wouldn't shoot a turkey with lead #6 past 45yrds past that #4s and mine will put 7 to 10 in a turkey head and neck at 60yrds with #4
If you're going to shoot over 30-35 yards, you need to scope your gun so you hit the same spot twice. People don't hold a shotgun the same way when aiming at 60 yards as they do aiming at 30. This changes point of impact. I zero mine at 60 and that makes me good to 70 and anything closer.

I don't like a scope, its hard to see the turkey when the foliage gets heavy and its easy for it to get out of adjustment!!
The white paper is not working for your audience. I didn’t see any holes in it. Get some birch wood Casey turkey targets and will greatly improve your patterning videos.
