- This video follows along Preston sighting in his remington versamax patterning for turkey season. There are a few different shells being tested but the primary test is done between the federal TSS, Browning TSS, and winchester Longbeard XR shells. The test was what we thought it would be, but also was not exactly what we thought it would be. Tune in to see the results!
This shotgun patterning test with turkey loads will be the final decision on which ammo we will be running this season for 2020 turkey season.

Should have did one target at a time at that 50 yards! Lol your hitting all targets each time your shot! Lol
Joshua Eck flipping corona, was down to 3 targets, and once i hit one, It was to late and nowhere to go for more targets!
@@DIYHunter I have a Remington versa max too I just pattern tested it with a kicks Turkey choke .665 with federal tss 7s browning tss 7s and heavy shots magnum blend. Browning was crap but magnum blend was crazy awesome pattern to 40 yards. Federal was good to had a better pattern at 50 though. All 3.5 inch shells
Joshua Eck yup. I have ran through a few different chokes and all shoot like shit compared to the stock turkey choke coming with the versamax. So just run that. Doesn’t even say what the constriction is on It.
@@DIYHunter The take away from this - try that factory turkey choke first. If it does a nice job, save yourself some money & stick with it. My two primary shotguns didn't come with factory turkey chokes. I've been very happy with Indian Creek Diamond Strike chokes using both Hevi-13 & TSS loads. I would be content with what you already have for sure. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Yep, killed 2 of 3 or 3 of 3 with EVERY shell at 53yds…. What if one or more of them had been jakes or (worse) a hen? Proof over and over is why would a Turkey hunter shoot 50+ yds?!? Respect the resource, call em close or let ‘em walk.
great video
That's really good patterns for stock chokes
Kinda crazy. What’s funny, our one shotgun after market chokes don’t work as well
Good video what size choke you are using .665. ? Or smaller
Nope, .665! Hell, in the versamax it’s the standard choke from remington
I’ve used long beard xr, and federal tss 9 shot. The pattern in the tss is amazing but twice I had birds hit in the head at 50-55yrds still trying to run away where I had swat em again and I didn’t miss. Yeah it’s tss but be warry of penetration with 9s out to 50 yrds. That said I’ve rocked gobblers at 60 with Long beard xr 5s. Best load I’ve used for laying out gobblers is hevi shot mag blend 15-75 yrds kills em but kicks like a sob. I’ve patterned and shot birds with over 20 different loads and by far for the money long beard xr can’t be beat. It’s a bonified 60 yrd lead load that’s way way way cheaper per round than tss or even reg hevi shot and the long beard xr is a lot more recoil friendly.
What about all the flyers from longboard that hit federal loads and all the flyers that hit the federal load from the browning loads, granted federal might have more pellets on target but you can't beat longbeard xr's for price, next time split targets to get a real pattern
Jeff Oaks you can clearly still see the pattern hitting targets. Didn’t count BB at any point but the 30 yard target was demolished by the tss even compared to the longbeard. It wasnt a total pellet test.
Federal TSS/factory choke appeared dead center with an awesome pattern @ both 30 & 53 yards. That would be the load in my chamber, & the others would be back up rounds with your set up. Bottom line: Every gun/choke combination is different. Everyone needs to do this same test for their set up.
M B prior to filming i shot a carlson, a jelly head, and stock choke out of my 11-87 special purpose 3” loads. All absolutely garbage, missing 10” from 30, standard choke with a Winchester xr, just crushed It. Ppl want opinions and there isn’t one, you’ve gotta just test test test.
@@DIYHunter I wouldn't change a thing about the Federal TSS/choke combination you shared here, except I wouldn't have a youth shoot 3.5" turkey loads. Even with a gas-operated shotgun, I would have them shoot 3" instead of 3.5". I wonder why the Browning loads kick more (same mass of shot & speed as the Federal loads)?
Kick a lot more and my youth hunters have all shot this gun and filled tags with this gun their tough
I’ve had two turkeys shot at 50-55 yrds start running away with there head flopping with tss 9s. Shot 4 birds with it and not a fan of the 9 shot. 7 shot on the other hand is money
targets are too close dummy half the pattern from each shell was on the others targets waste of shells
Nice video but for the money you should try Foxtrot ammo, Burgess Creek, Pendleton ammo . They are all rolled one at a time. And try an Indian creek choke tube.
Indian creek didn’t pattern for jack squat out of this neither did a carlson and we looked at those ammos but they were another 3-4 bucks per shell and Pendleton is 10 shell minimum was only reason didn’t grab any this season
KY KRaZY I just got shells off foxtrot, hands down one of the best hand loads out there. I also run a Indian creek choke
What choke we’re you using
That’s the stock choke that comes with the versamax. I couldn’t find 1 after market to beat It. Now i have 3 useless chokes
Wish you had used some Apex number 8 & 9 as well but good anyway
Our video for 2021 season will 100% include those
Looks like the Federal TSS did the best
Cool vid, but I have to say stoegar m3020 Indian creek choke apex #9 and can just about same result as your 12
R Jason Fuller that’s awesome!
R Jason Fuller....I hear that brother!!! Except I'm shooting handloads 1 5/8oz. 9s.....same gun with same IC choke in .562. And we ain't gettin half the recoil this fella is.
20 is the new 12💡
Dropped my turkey last week at 50 yards shooting the Winchester longbeard XR in 3 inch 5 shot. Performed flawlessly. No need to spend 10 dollars per shot shooting the federal's IMO. Granted it patterns better, still not worth it. If I want to drop a turkey at 60 yards I'll just throw in the XR 3 1/2's
These xr 3.5-6 did pretty incredible even still at 60. If we take money out of It , tss all day long. If money is factored, 100% the XR in 6 shot is our go to and has been for about 3-4 seasons now
The longbeard 6's may pattern well enough at 54 yards but pattern density is only half the story. Penetration is the other half. I don't trust number 6 lead to kill consistently at that distance. TSS shot, even the number 9's, will still absolutely shred a turkeys head at that distance and beyond.
Have a penetration test video we’re going to release that’s exactly showing this. 1000% agree
The middle target got shot 3 times at 53yds.
Cool. Thanks for watching
What choke you using ???
Crazy hunter nick regular old remington wingmaster that came with It. Spent ton of $ and didn’t find one that shot better
DIY Hunter I’m going to try my regular full choke with the long beard X-r I had a Tom at 45 yards today I shot him and just flew away like I tried killing him with a sling shot first turkey I’ve ever missed and first one I’ve ever shot at with an aftermarket choke (carlsons ) I’ve killed bunch of turkeys in past with regular choke line your saying what a waste of money!
Crazy hunter nick i mean, if you patterned the choke and It patterned at 40-50, then the shot wasn’t the chokes fault, or You haven’t patterned so your not sure what It does at 45?
DIY Hunter I never pattered it at all I just went out and shot with my full I just assumed it would be better with a turkey choke I’m going to take a shot out of my 870 and see what happens maybe it was me I’m not blaming the choke but last Saturday my friend shot a turkey at 30 yards and we found multiple pellets in the legs and few in the head with the same set up that’s why I was thinking it was the choke and set up I switched to
Crazy hunter nick you absolutely can’t just toss a choke and load in. Get out and check, ive got 4-5 chokes for mine that didn’t work with the ammo i wanted to use. I have one from carlson that patterned 15” right at 30 yards. It’ll pattern with different ammo better. Nobody is correct when they say “if they gun doesn’t shoot straight send it back” that’s why so many guys are running red dots. You can run the setup you like and still zero in
three targets side by side at 50 yards ! that's funny hahaha ....
can't tell anything by that !
Longbeard was your winner.
They are such a good shell
50 yard test was pretty much worthless for comparison, but that federal tss is impressive.
Our newer video with Apex is even better
Knock down power of the federal TSS far exceeds the XR at ranges, I run hand load TSS #9
Costs to much can buy turkey cheaper.
The long beard killed three in one shot
weve ran only the longbeard Xrs in 6's for years
So you predicted 2 winners....
Best value and best overall, sorta
Your going to let a first time hunter or youth or ladys shoot those 3.5" loads ;( you will ruin those hunters as they will NEVER want to shoot another gun. Thats not fair to them
He’s killed a bird 3 years in a row, the last two on film with me. No issues. Even sights in with me. So not sure what your getting at. Not taking a lady or young girl. He has a blast and is 3/3 now on spring birds
Not trying to be argumentative but I see no value whatsoever in comparing the pattern of 2.25 Oz of #9 TSS that contains 814 pellets vs 2oz of #6 lead that contain 615 pellets or whopping 199 less than the 2.25oz of TSS or 2oz of #5 shot That contain 456 pellets or 349 fewer pellets than 2.25oz of #9 TSS
I'm mean one need not a masters in math to know tge TSS absolutely will out pattern any turkey shells that use lead shot.
Add on to the above facts that #9 TSS has the same retained energy at 70 yards as #4 lead shot and it's blindingly obvious TSS is the hands down winner.
But the question is is that level of performance worth $14 a shell when WLBXR's will effectively kill to 60 yards and cost around $2.75 a shell.
I dunno what your buying but that sucks paying 14 a shell. I’d look elsewhere i guess seems like your getting ripped off maybe. You’ve also made no point whatsoever here besides complaining tss cost more. Use lead then. Clearly the tss destroys a lead shot, so pick lead nobody is saying one verse the other
Dead or deader... I'm fine with $2 dead 👍🇺🇸🦃
Shoot a JEBs .650 Headhunter with #9 or #10 TSS and you will be amazed...
80 yards isn't uncommon to get a kill
I don’t know what planet an 80 yard shot comes up, but not in the north east in the woods
@@DIYHunter we hunt mostly in wooded swampy areas, but when you have them fly from the roost into a field it isn't uncommon if they are already with hens to get stuck out there a ways. Plus I'm not a good caller, so I did what I had to do to make sure those long birds don't get away anymore.
Shoot 100gr .243 Remingtons $25 for 20. No shotgun or TSS loading will touch that….. sarcasm btw
Horrible test lmfao! Shame you didn't plan shit !
snow flake babys trying to be hunters lol
Definitely snow flakes just trying to be hunters so bad
