TSS vs Longbeard XR shotgun pattern test

  • Here It is! Another edition of shotgun patterning/field testing of all types of turkey loads. How to pattern a shotgun! We compare the federal tss, apex ammunition, and Winchester longbeard XR shotgun shells at 40 yards!
    The test with the 3” shot sell was so so. But the 3.5” showed a very valid compare and contrast.
    We ran the apex ammunition 9 shot size. The federal tss is 9 shot size. And the Winchester XR in 6 shot.
    We wanted to see what max potential for spray would be! Next test we will do is penetration test of these comparisons. Patterning and testing loads for a turkey shotgun can be critical, and in other circumstances not very important at all!
    Hope you find this useful!

    We've used Long beard XR for years. This past youth weekend, we had my grandson on a Tom when he slipped away at 70 yards. That made me reconsider the choice of saving a few bucks on ammo you only shoot once or twice a year, when it matters most and need a few extra yards range. I shoot an 835...couldn't find any 3 1/2 Federal TSS 3" 7/9 combo so I bought the 3" and a Carlson TSS choke tube. I patterned gun the gun to make sure I was on at distance. This past weekend, I had a Tom hang up in a clearing with a hen at 60 yrds...TSS dropped him clean. Even with the TSS, I wouldn't have attempted a 70 yard shot but The TSS/choke combo gave me the confidence to push it to 60.

      We just can’t grasp if we have a few bucks why not to use It. Like buying a truck, and they ask if you want 50% more horsepower for a small small fee. Why not. BUT. The XR are deadly as hell and work well

    Next time you shoot the Long Beard, try using a.650 choke or a.660. Also do away with the 6 shot and get some XR in 5 shot. You'll see a difference. As for the 11-87, the choke is the issue there as well.

    • @DIYHunter
      @DIYHunter  Před 2 lety +1

      It’s not the choke, every single choke minus stock, has always shot off the same side. Since 2000 buying the gun, found a choke pattern i like, rear sighted and shimmed. All is well. Not fans of 5 shot at all, we’ve ran 6 shot forever, but have ran tss for 3 years now, just no reason to switch back. Tbe choke is a carlson .660 in the 11-87, i think same one in the versamax. Pattern was best of everything, so tapped rear sight and fixed, best combo i could make later

      Kinda devastating. We just put a bird down today with the apex small town blend. It’s ridiculous. Hits them like a missile. Watch for the video on a New Jersey turkey here in the next few weeks It just demolished him. We’ve killed everything for years with XR 6s. And love them. The apex at 40 is so substantially better, if you have expendable income it’s hard to argue.

    It's not that the 1187 throws a bad pattern. It just throws it to the left. If you add an optic or better open sights, that Remington would do just fine.

    I shoot the Apex number 9 shot in my Mossberg 835. With a Hevishot choke I am putting 347 pellets inside a 10 inch circle at 40 yards. And those TSS 9's just strip through a gobblers head and neck. By far the best turkey shell I have used.

      @@DIYHunter cool? Are you saying I'm wrong? Because if you actually test 2 guns side by side 1 with a 28 inch barrel and 1 with a 22 inch barrel they would shot almost exactly the same at any distance. My 1187 super mag with 22 inch barrel shoots just as far and tight as my benelli sbe3 with 28 inch barrel.

    I have a new Girsan mc312 gobbler with a Jebs .655 choke shooting 3 1/2 the longbeard xr 6 did poorly at 40 yards. I only shot it once. However the longbeard xr #5 did well as did federal tss. I have Apex but haven’t shot anything with them

      The more and more tech improves its almost incredible how much everything alters by round choke and gun. We’ve killed every bird for years with XR 6 shot but damn theee type of results make It hard to not switch

      I shot mostly win XX 4 or 5 shot, never killed anything with the xr yet. But the 4 and 5 XR do well in my 3 12ga guns with Jebs and patternmaster chokes. Killed 1 gobbler and 1 coyote with federal tss. 8 & 20 yards. And yes technology has drastically improved.
