Hi Jim ! I wonder, how do you set up your pickups ? Are they always set up at the same height on all your guitars ? and did you mess with the pole pieces ? Your sound is my favourite with Cliff Gallup's
So great! Love to see how my favorite players set up their rigs. As a surf guy, the rockabilly sound is just down the street from me, as it were. Edit: a baffle! What a great idea! Does that work best when mic'd? If not mic'd does the sound get muddy with the baffle?
If I played gigs where there was no mic on the guitar amp, which I don't do too much anymore, the baffle might be even more important as a "no microphone" situation could only occur in a really small venue where a loud amplifier could be too much. I've found that I can move the baffle a bit to expose a fraction of the speaker and it doesn't sound muffled at all. Ironically, the only shows where I cover the speaker up completely are really big outdoor stages that are concrete. Without the baffle on those types of stages the amp can sound too brittle. Moving the baffle around a little bit can make it right. Of course, there is a microphone on the amp for about 100% of the venues I play now. And that brings up another thing about the baffle, If I want to "turn up" or "turn down", I just move the baffle and it doesn't affect the mix to the mains or monitors like it would if I adjusted the volume of the amp. The other nice thing is if we start the set, and I find out that with an audience filling the room makes it hard for me to hear the amp, I can push it away a little with my foot/leg while I'm playing. Doing the opposite is a little harder, I have to wait until the end of the first song to move the baffle with my hands to cover the speaker more if I'm too loud.

I tend to run a '59 Bassman ltd, and yeah...way too loud for most modern applications 🙃 A baffle to reduce 2 of the 4x10" might be a game changer We are a 3 piece instrumental surf group so the battle of balance between the guitar/bass/drums is a trick 😆
Never tried a Bigsby pedal. I'm not really big into pedals either. Of course, I love delay and reverb, but I don't feel like anyone has created a pedal that sounds like a turned up amplifier yet. I've only recently started using a boost pedal. Before, I just controlled the overall volume with my hands. Sometimes with my volume knob on the guitar. I play pretty soft when I play chords and dig in a little more for the solos. When we started using piano players, I found that it helped them if I was quieter while they were playing, so I got the boost pedal for my solos. I don't always use it for my solos as it does add extra distortion that I wish it didn't.
@@fun-guyrecords4297 understood. I really only use delay, reverb, some kind of overdrive (I have a *Hot Cake* and a *Doctor Robert* that I switch between) and an EQ. Not that some compression hurts but I use solid state and I feel like solid state doesn’t give that same break into gain when you dig into it that tube amps do. No. I know the guy who owns the company and I bet it's pretty good, but I get very used to my personal amp. My biggest problem with dates where we fly out to, where I have to use some amp provided, is that even if it's a good amplifier, I'm not used to the response and tone and all and it's very very difficult to negotiate...ie...sounds like crap to me. I'd almost rather have my own personal amp and a rented guitar on those gigs!

Have you tried the UA OX box? You could tame a Super Reverb with one without losing the tone.
What do you think about the Bigsby Trem pedals?

No. I know the guy who owns the company and I bet it's pretty good, but I get very used to my personal amp.
