I didn’t think you’d make a follow up video unless it was a spoiler review.

2:57 Mario is NOT 40 years old yet guys! You know why?? Because SMB came out on September 16th 1985 guys ! I was born on April 19th 1985 so WE BOTH are 38 years old not 40 thanks for NOT making us NOT seem/sound/look older than we actually are. Thank you for Mario sake and mine😡😡😡
@@petitpikmin the OG donkey Kong tho
I think Arlo’s cameo in the movie where he did an hour long monologue about the state of Paper Mario is what sold it for me
Spoilers!!
But tbh the "Paper Mario Ttyd HD Extended Arlo Doki Doki Heartwarming Surprise Deluxe Edition" was a nice surprise
That was my favorite part
I would unironically watch the Mario movie just for that scene.
YES THAT MADE THE MOVIE FOR ME! Arlo's cameo was definitely my favorite part.
It was his post credit rant about his fears about the new Pikmin game that brought me back to my childhood.
Personally, I think that the reason that the Mario movie was so good was because Nintendo was helping to make it. If Hollywood had been allowed to reign free with the movie, they would have ruined it.
There's also a generational thing. In the 90s-00s directors didn't understand what made games fun and memorable. Now movies and cartoon directors grew up with Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy and it's common to see references to them done right.
My mind was blown with Gumball's FF7 parody. I showed the game to my little brother, he didn't know that game was for real, he thought it was just "gamey" things.
Yup. Universal want Princess Peace to be strong heroine in the movie but Nintendo tone down it a lot
If Illumination got free reign this movie would be nothing but pop-references and fart jokes. The random 80s music was totally an Illumination addition.
Everyone memed about how if Illumination made a fart joke Nintendo would have aimed their giant cannon at them and fired and that probably holds some truth
@@peronkop It'd be nice if Hollywood took this movie as an instructive moment about what works and what doesn't. I think if more movies took the themes and production choices of this movie... Well, realistically, they wouldn't do quite as well without Mario on the poster, but I think it'd do better than the average movie as a breath of fresh air.
I have heard people singing the "Peaches" song who haven't even seen the movie yet! That is a huge indicator of the movie's success, when something from the movie, like a song, is seeping into pop culture beyond the viewing audience.
Yes! I love Peaches. Jack Black is utterly brilliant. :)
“Peaches” debuted at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is the first solo Jack Black song to make it on the charts.
It's just so fun! Just watched the movie yesterday, and on the ride back we blasted the song and loudly/badly sang peaches the whole way.
I wonder if "Peaches" is going to be the new "Let it Go"?
Same, in my cinema as soon as the song started, everyone sang along and already knew the words to the song without seeing the movie before
We're basically guaranteed endless spinoffs and sequels and you know what? If this turns Illumination into the "Nintendo movie" company, I'm kinda here for it.
Hell yes. Kinda like how Traveler's Tales became the "LEGO Game" company.
A way better legacy than the "bad movies company".
Illumination can make projects for general audiences. The in-house nintendo pictures can make niche projects not necessarily meant to turn a profit.
While I liked the Mario movie a lot, I gotta disagree with that sentiment about Illumination. Firstly, I do not believe we live in a timeline where they would even consider making a Metroid or Fire Emblem movie, secondly, I don't want them Minion-izing the Pikmin if they made that into a movie, (even though that would probably do wonders for the series' sales) and thirdly, I do not trust them to write dialogue for Link in the slightest, even if it were Wind-Waker-styled.
I’d say they were more of a hit or miss company
i hope nintendo never changes and they just keep doing what they do best. except for the frivolous lawsuits, that's gotta change.
And the bad online
And a few other things
But I’ve been a fan since childhood and overall there’s really not that much I need changed
Japan’s copyright protection laws gotta change
Hot take, I don't like the fact it was successful, Mario should stay a video game and keep its resources for the games. An IP being too big is a blessing for the owners but a curse for the consumer, the last thing we want is Mario games becoming like Pokémon games aka a glorified advertisement for the merchandise which means lower quality games.
And ignoring F-Zero. (they're also experts at that)
@Riahisama I think Nintendo cares about the reputation of Mario too much to let oversaturation like that happen though
Jack Black as Bowser is one of the best choices for this movie, he did spectacular
@@danjoredd same he is everywhere
Why do I always see all your names in every comment section
"Everywhere I go... I see his face..."
And everyone else just did their regular voices and that's somehow awesome. I know this movie isn't for me but sheesh
He’s one of my fav entertainers!
the movie is very stunted for me personally, as I don’t hear bowser/donkey/Luigi … I just hear Jack black, Seth, and Charlie … not dissen there performances. Just that there voices are too iconic for me
My fear is that they will one day be introduced into the mario games
I think Miyamoto being executive producer and his thoughts on gameplay vs story really explains the high and low points of the movie.

@@diccchocolate416 in a way would you say that the movie is paced like a video game?
I'm in need of a Luigi's Mansion movie now, Luigi was my favorite and Charlie Day did phenomenal as his voice actor. It'd be great to see even more of him and see him get his own story arc.
We kind of got a bit of Luigi's Mansion in the film. Admittedly it was only two minutes, but still. I don't know how you'd make a 90 minute-2 hour movie out of that premise.
*_You Get It_*
@@jamesgravil9162 it's possible to do so. Remember all of the cutscenes from the Luigi's Mansion trilogy? If Next Level Games can make every cutscenes brimming with character, charm, and expression like that, then Illumination can surely do it just fine.
yes and them releasing for halloween season would be perfect, if it lines up with a new LM game then that will be insane.
@@jamesgravil9162 it wouldn't necessarily have to be a straight adaptation of just one game. the mario movie borrowed from all over the mario canon on top of having an original story. a luigis mansion movie could borrow from all three of the lm games and beyond, on top of adding it's own elements.
that said, I don't see how it'd be difficult to flesh out a full movie from the premise alone, it's not like this the first time anyone has ever decided to stick a character in a haunted house for a movie.
I just remembered that you predicted that DK would fart in the movie. I am so happy that their was no poop or fart humor and the closest we got was the toilet scene that still had crystal clear water.
YES
It’s also worth noting that the movie released at the PERFECT time!
Releasing on a Wednesday to not only capitalize on the long Easter weekend, but also in time for a lot of schools spring break was genius.
Plus putting it out on the first week of a month where there was no other major block buster competition was also a phenomenal idea. The movie pretty much got it’s first 4 weekends to itself!
Also being the first kids movie in 4 months
Mario has Goomba stomped Mickey Mouse. What a time to be alive!
Oh yeah, like Disney hasn't exactly been on top lately and the Mario Movie is completely outshining them. I think it'll be kinda fun to watch Disney squirm a bit, see what happens :)
@SpaceLobster21 if they do a legend of zelda movie, it will be fun to watch Disney lose it because someone else is cutting in on their fairytale monopoly.
It's already grossing over 900 million. It's days away from the billion-dollar mark, tops!

"Mario casts a long shadow " Mikey Newman, Movies With Mikey 2021
@@marcoasturias8520 Agreed, "watchable" doesn't bring people to the theater 3+ times, especially in this economy.
Probably one of the best aspects of the movie is how not only does the world is just like the games, but also how the characters move and interact with the world. It made me want to play a Mario game.
fr the parkour they did in the movie was awesome
A huge part of why I personally love this movie so much more than the sonic movie or detective Pikachu is the soundtrack. Every minute there's another easily recognizable track from one of the mario games. It's done tastefully too, it doesn't feel out of place when these songs play, you almost don't even notice it if you aren't actively listening
Yeah; when the tracks are from the mario games, the song choices are great. When they're random songs, the choices are not great. I'm sorry, Mario movie, but it is impossible to supplant Shrek 2 as the movie that perfected using "I Need a Hero".
@Matthew Muir yea the irl music felt so out of place especially take on me
@@VilaToro64 Yeah. Apparently, those songs were supposed to be just placeholders that would be replaced by original songs made by the movie's composer, but, even though the composer finished the songs, the placeholder music was left in the final movie.
@matthewmuir8884 yeah the generic 80s/90s songs were the one exception, I could feel every second that they were playing in the theater and was so happy when it ended. I feel like they were probably forced to include those songs for $$$ but the movie would be better off without them IMO
@@matthewmuir8884 actually, apparently the composer had to fight because excuctives wanted more tracks to be replaced.
Remember the superstar theme? Yeah exectutives wanted that to be "Van Halen's Jump". The pop songs weren't placeholders, the oriiginal tracks were supposed to play, they are all on the official soundtrack, just the executives wanted pop songs, and managed to win with 3. They wanted to include more, but the composer put his foot down.
Honestly, watching the movie critics being forced to eat their words has been almost as entertaining as them movie was.
Those critics & Disney can go drop down in the sewers

This movie this unapologetically awesome and rightfully deserves its success. I welcome the upcoming Nintendo Cinematic Universe with open arms, and eagerly await for Nintendo to announce what's next.
I personally thought that a lot of it ran on fanservice and shout-outs, but even without those, it's a still good movie that stands on its own.
I hope the dialogues are better in the next one though. Oh, and I could survive without the pop music. Just give me more Mario songs.
@@Alfonso88279 I wish they at least covered or remixed the songs, would be really cool
@@longWriter Every Nintendo does that has "Mario" on the cover is fan service of some sort.
@@Alfonso88279 Yeah, the pop songs were really out-of-place, and any animated movie that uses "I Need a Hero" may as well be saying, "Please compare me unfavourably to Shrek 2".
I went to the dentist this week; I heard this grown man and his assistant both talking about how good the Mario movie is. This is what a cultural phenomenon looks like, that and your joke song hitting the charts!
I went to see it on my birthday and it was such a cute film, and jack black absolutely aced his part as bowser

not disrespecting the fan base,
not using political shaming in the marketing,

I'm Overjoyed Mario wasn't on that list.
One character that really surprised me was Donkey Kong. Seth Rogen did an excellent job voice acting him! I was expecting a piss poor job on him but it was received very well!
Sexy profile pic 😳
I figure that the Mario Movie mostly, but not entirely, ran on fanservice: items, cameos, environments, and ESPECIALLY the music. But even if you don't get the fanservice, it's *still* a good movie: well-paced, well-acted, consistent characterization (at least within the movie), the plot worked, the action sequences were good (though I feel like it would've benefitted from having more *of* those action sequences), satisfying climax and resolution---the list goes on.
I watched it with a non gamer and he liked it
That's not totally accurate, since I'm sure a majority of people who watched it aren't entirely Mario fans tbh.
I don't think you can in good faith say that the movie was well-paced. It wasn't bad but it really suffered from being so short + so fast. I wanted to see more interactions between characters, like more luigi + bowser moments, more kong + mario banter. A lot of it was just "hey hello I just met you this is what we need to do you can help me ok let's go!"
No, it did entirely run on fanservice. And it already has too many action scenes.
I think their best move was the weird voice cast. They were able to get SO much hype and attention from people who were largely making fun of the casting and couldn't wait to see how crazy it would be. And then every character was actually well voice acted, so they got the hype AND people got to be pleasantly surprised!
I don’t know if anyone noticed (I’m sure it’s the case, though), but Iwata was also credited in the movie, as the former President of Nintendo. Very nice!
Miyamoto looked like he had more fun with this project then he has for a long time
Reccomendation for everyone: If you see the movie again, splurge and see it in 3D. It's so breathtaking and the 3D works so so well. Also a reminder Nintendo bought taht movie studio and renamed it nintendo pictures so have no fear, we will see nintendo movies again.
I saw it in 3D. It's a fun ride.
This is what we did and it was fabulous.
I saw it in 3D the first time, only when the scene was brightly-lit did the 3-D effect work. I sort of wish Nintendo had worked on this movie as a 3D movie first, but they weren't going to do that, most of the fad is gone by this point.
Last year, we were laughing our butts off about how the movie was being made by Illumination and was starring Chris Pratt. Now, The Mario Movie is quickly becoming the most successful and beloved video game adaptation ever made. Think about that!
Not me. I saw the poster, than the teaser trailer. I was sold!
The movie is successful despite Chris Pratt.
I watched it twice at the movie theater. Probably a few more times at home when it’s released.

The Marion Movie might not be the best movie, but it's certainly a fun one. And I think that's the main, minor, important detail that so many movie studios fail to see.

Honestly, while I'm glad the movie actually was y'know, GOOD, all I really needed was for it to not be boring. Many have said that the movie's a bit too fast paced, and I agree, but I MUCH prefer it over the movie being 90% filler and a drag to get through. I was never bored during the movie, I had an extremely fun time watching, I would watch it again (I already have multiple times), and that's really all that matters to me.

Mario Movie just crossed $1 Billion Dollars at the Box Office! Wa-hoo! 😊
Everyone I knew scored free tickets to this movie. Almost like they were being given out by NBC...
This movie has what other Hollywood films struggle to find. A wholesome story.
The cast was also incredible.
I hope that the success of this movie makes Nintendo realize just how much people like seeing the Mario characters...simply just do things. Say stuff, be part of a story, even if only a simple one. Playing as them and seeing them go through levels in nice and the gameplay is of course very important. But we all seen and done that so many times. We want to see their personality fleshed out. Take the piano scene in this movie for example. Bowser playing the piano and singing a love ballad for Peach. That's a great scene and everyone loved it. It's not even a very complicated concept either but we just love Bowser so much, we can't get enough. Watching Mario and the others say or do things we haven't seen them do before and give a little more characterization, that's what we all want. And that is also the same reason why the Mario RPGs become such cult classics.
Dude, the first half of the movie was great! But the theater had reclining chairs and I fell asleep because I'm over 30... I think that's how the theater companies are trying to get you to buy more tickets!!!
I dunno---that means you have to buy another ticket to see what you missed so maybe they're onto something, after all!
And having seen it, I can tell you that the second half was even better---character development, big plot twists, Mario (and even Luigi!) growing into the heroes they needed to be...I'm going to shut up before I spoil something you couldn't have _already_ figured was in the movie!

Imagine the Nintendo Cinematic Universe ending in a Smash Brothers movie, certified money printer
I saw the Mario movie with my brother, and as we left the theatre, I joked, "Could you imagine if the post-credits scene had been a giant right hand appearing in front of Mario and saying, 'I want to discuss the Smash Bros. initiative'?"
In the long run, I could very well see this happening. I'm already trying to start a populist movement to get Geno included in the next Mario movie, but I don't seem to be succeeding lol.
I mean I could definitely see them just adding more and more references/spin-offs. Donkey Kong spin-off, Luigi Mansion spin-off, etc. all the way till they start doing things like a Rocky rip-off movie with Little Mac, a Sword in the Stone rip-off starring Marth, etc. As long as they first introduce the character in the Mario movie, like Donkey Kong, then they can make a spin-off starring that character. Every investor is going to want them to keep milking this cash cow.

@@matthewmuir8884 I agree.
A Zelda anime would basically be the plot of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure with a more medieval vibe.
I think something you may have missed when it comes to why the movie took so long to come out is brand integration. Remember, it's not just the movie that Nintendo partnered with Universal on, theyve got their theme parks too. My guess is they wanted both to come out around the same time.
Had that thought as well, a lot of the mushroom kingdom looks interesting compared to the theme park stuff. This is kind of like a multi-pronged attack with the movie, theme park, and... game sequel this holiday season?!

This brings back that one fan-animation of the Gravity Falls intro, but with Mario lore. I hope we see something like that.
It's hilarious to compare this video with Arlo's videos from when the Mario movie was known. All the worries about Illumination, fretting over how to get a story to work, disbelief at Chris Pratt's casting... and now this.
Miyamoto said already they wanna make more films and even acknowledged the low critic scores as a possibility as to why word of mouth spread so quick.
If, or should i say when, they make another Mario Movie, i really hope Wario is in it.
You NAILED the reasons it did so well! The movie is actually complex, and it’s different every time you see it. See it in 3D, it’s amazing!
I nominate "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" to be added to that 'good game movies' pile. That 9ne was criminally underrated. It was no accademy award winner, but just like the Mario movie, it was everything I could've hoped for in a cinematic adaptation.
Arlo really hit the nail on the head when he said that the core audience (besides kids) that the Mario Movie targets super well, which is us "Weird Nerds" which I am proud to be one of! I'm a huge Mario fan even today as an adult (though I find myself also liking NIntendo's more adult oriented franchises too alongside what I liked as a kid) and this movie caters perfectly to me, saw it twice and I might try to see it a third time before it leaves theaters. It's just nice to have something in theaters that I actually really enjoy for the first time in many years honestly. My bet on how much the movie will make in total will be 1.5 billion, as Frozen 2 sold 1.45 billion and the Mario Movie keeps crushing it in sales week by week so I think it'll surpass it. Not sure if it'll hit 2 billion but I hope it does, then it'd be one of the best selling movies ever made period!
I agree
The Super Mario Bros 2 Movie is going to be the Tears of the Kingdom of films and come out in seven years
Mario and Sonic both getting huge successful movies... We're in the timeline where we might actually get a Super Smash Bros movie
I have sadly not been able to make it out to see this film yet, due to work schedules and whatnot... But will see it eventually! Oh, and Arlo, thank you for having NO SPOILERS in this video! I also like the fact that you stuck with photos and did show any clips either! Again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you! I plan to see this soon and I'll be taking my Super Mario Game & Watch I got for the Holidays with me!
5:06 Donkey Kong Frozen Ape
There is one thing that I want from the next one: It needs to slow down just a hair. Not much, but just enough to give some more time and weight to the more emotional thing
Your spirit is so light and uplifting and energizing these days. I am so happy for you
Background on Nintendo's reluctance was related to the fact that they felt the 1993 Super Mario Brothers movie was a disaster and didn't do their IP justice. Combine that with the Phillips CDi licensing and Nintendo riled in their licenses and refused to share them until finally they found a studio they can trust.
That makes sense and all and is true but it's funny to imagine it was the opposite. They were too scared to make another movie since they never thought it could never live up to the masterpiece of 1993 Super Mario Brothers and Zelda cdi
Everyone here knows Arlo was looking for the paper universe in that pipe gateway area!!
Maybe, if Miyamoto became the “movie guy” we could maybe get a paper Mario along the lines of thousand year door, ooo!
The demographic of "Weird Nerds" is literally why the MCU blew up to be as big as it did just before it overstayed its welcome and people got burned out by oversaturation. I strongly suspect that with the success of Sonic, Detective Pikachu, and now the Mario movie, we're going to see the exact same thing happen with Video Game movies. They'll be the new go-to for adaptations following one of the three formulas set by those three titles.
Just watched this with the kids. I loved it. It felt right. Nothing felt forced, no grand reimagining of characters, no modern 4th wall jokes to make a meta analysis on society. It was just fun. Character motivations were simple and dialogue served that. Mario wants to save his brother and make something of himself, Luigi is loyal to his brother and shows his courage, Princess Peach wants to protect her kingdom (also her portrayal was true to character and not some ”Yaasss slay girl" annoying modern film cliche), Bowser thinks Peach is hot and wants to marry her but is insecure so easily jealous when he hears Peach is traveling with Mario. These arent crazy characters (those are other Nintendo franchises) these are fun characters.
I also had a big smile on my face with the DK Rap happening in the movie
As for every movie about "nothing" (such as Ghostbusters), the sequel must be careful in its execution. It will need to take a more mature turn, or at the very least maintain its novelty.
Thank goodness for arlo
Dang it! You got to him 1st.
3:27 Part of me had hoped from the line ‘Complete Global Saturation’ from a fellow resident evil fan 😉
If they start releasing a slew of Mario movies then I want to see one where Bowser and the bros temporarily team up to kick butt a la the RPGs. Seeing them begrudgingly work together is always great
Toadsworth would have single handedly made this movie the greatest movie of all time. Loved it anyway, but he will be missed
Apparently, he, Toadette and Captain Toad were originally going to be in the movie, but they were cut at some point in the early drafting stage.
@@matthewmuir8884 I know!😭😭
Its also worth noting that this is the first kids movie to hit theaters in 4 months. Thats a lot of pent up demand they were able to tap into.
Sure! Tell that to Strange world tho
The extra bonus with Metal dishwear is the light show you get when you microwave the leftovers.
I just watched it and it’s fantastic, now I know why is as loved as it has been, and I can’t wait for the sequel
My kid is too young for theater trips yet, but I’m grabbing a copy when it drops on blu-ray so she can enjoy it at home. And by “she,” I mean “we.”
I'll never forget that feeling when I first seen it.. I had a smile on my face the entire time
Watched the film last weekend, and it was like a five thumbs up and 100/5 solid platinum stars. If they’re doing a sequel, hopefully they add more super Mario Bross characters, like Wario, Waluigi, Daisy, the koopalings etc.
As a former fan of MLP's 4th gen, I can tell you I didn't give any kind of care about the franchise before Lauren Faust stepped in to work on the product. I didn't tune in for the ponies or the messages or the theme song. I stumbled upon it out of boredom and it was the humor, the writing, the interactions that got me invested for a while. The ponies were just the layer of what I liked in Faust's works and I think she's the one to thank for drawing in a wider audience than the usual crowd because there was a layer of thought beyond the corporate side of things, an attempt to make something anyone, not just girls, not just guys, just freaking PEOPLE could find fun about it.
When she left the show, I gotta tell you, I honestly felt it in the loss of whatever charmed me to that show in the first place. The characters, the art, the themes might have been similar but they lost a real sense of relatability to me. So I stopped caring because it wasn't something really I could relate to anymore. I'm sure the people who took over did their best with the audience that was there but it just wasn't my thing so I moved on. I tried, I really did but it stopped being worth the effort after a while and while I don't fault fans who stuck it out, it just didn't do it and I realized it wasn't my duty to some brand or corporation to keep watching. I just watch what I like and that's it. Really that simple. Make it fun, make it entertaining, don't care about filling a run time or meeting a deadline or whatever. Just. FUN! If you don't feel that, you're just gonna burn out. Trust me there.
been binge listening/watching yoyr videos while i draw and its become one of my favorite things :)
i especially love yoyr zelda videos!!!
Merry Autumn from Australia!
How about lets talk about the overwhelming success of arlo
