    Just so you all know, I'm aware that you can click the right stick to change the battle camera. But that doesn't solve my problem, it just gives me a super constrained angle. I want to easily see both Pokemon and trainers and move the camera around for different angles sometimes. *grumbles about how this wasn't a problem in Legends Arceus*

    One of the big problems with the map and world design is that there is an unprecedented cut off between towns and wild area. There are no houses or really any buildings to come across in the wild that aren't Pokemon centers. Similarly there are incredibly few people that aren't trainers that you can meet outside of towns.

      Exactly. I love the open world a lot and it's fun to explore. But it's so one dimensional, it lacks any human element outside of the academy. Give me fun NPCs. Give me side quests. Give me big, Team Rocket HQ-esque buildings to explore. Give me SOMETHING more than just a big open world.

    • @flerken4233
      @flerken4233 Před rokem +27

      I personally would prefer level scaling with my Pokémon games too- and followed a scaling chart to do so. But while they probably didn’t do level scaling solely because they didn’t have time to work on it, the excuse that it’s for an open world experience does kinda work for it. Like in Skyrim for example, you can go to higher level areas and try your best to beat them before annihilating the lower level areas you skipped. Pokemon’s balance isn’t as good, but they attempted something similar with the higher level Pokemon harder to catch and not listen to you, while it still being possible to train up caught lower level Pokémon like your starter that will always listen to you if you please.

    • @getthegoons
      @getthegoons Před rokem +20

      @@flerken4233 skyrim is a terrible example, there is level scaling. If you are a high enough level in Bleak Falls Barrow it'll spawn a Frost Troll.
      There's areas where it is more prevalent, but Skyrim level scales enemies, rewards, etc. If you're high enough level you'll find Dragon Priests instead of boss draugr.

    • @digitalgloop12
      @digitalgloop12 Před rokem +19

      @@getthegoons better example: Elden Ring. There is no level scaling in elden ring. Enemies and bosses from the earlier areas will not get stronger or have better HP just because you leveled up. Not many people complain about that game not having scaling. They just do it in order or they happily steamroll whoever it is that they found themselves able to steamroll.
      I totally understand why GF would go with this choice. In the games, there is usually talk about certain gym leaders canonically being stronger than others. Its recognized by the characters that the gym leaders are ordered by strength. They chose to stick true to that here and I personally don't mind. I just got the easy gyms out of the way while my team was still pretty low level or undermanned and it proved a decent challenge at that stage of the game. Nothing crazy but what I'd expect for early gyms. Only thing is I started on the west and didn't know there were low level gyms on the east so I steamroller those before taking on the last 2 in the mountains.

      To me, this is one of the biggest signs that the game is literally unfinished. The few buildings that do have interiors are really cute, like the player's house and the sandwich shop, and then the rest are just...menus. Blank. Compared to Lumiose City, in particular, it's so bland! It really seems like they wanted to make all the shops like that, but just literally didn't have time to design interiors for all of them so slapped in the store menu when you walked inside and that's that.

    • @mrshmuga9
      @mrshmuga9 Před rokem +20

      The sandwiches are cute, but I just skip all of that. Too much thinking involved of what bonus you want and for what type depending on the Pokémon you’re using or looking for, and if those shops have one at all. The PSS system of X/Y was easier. You just selected an individual ability. You can’t even experiment and unlock recipes yourself. You have to remember to go to the sandwich guy (and which of the dozen food stores actually has him) and he’ll tell you… at random intervals. Why would I even want more EXP for only a specific type anyway? I want the bonus for my whole team. They made a good system needlessly complicated/worthless. Just do the same thing but tack on a mini-game. It’s fine, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel and people won’t mind doing an activity for 30s.

    The level scaling is my biggest issue. How hard would it have been to say “little Timmy has five badges across the three stories, so this gym battle will be level 25ish,” and that would create an incentive to not go to all the titans right away because they increase the difficulty. Without the level scaling, the game does not lend itself well to open world at all.

      @mrshmuga9 Před rokem +51

      I’ll do ya one better. I’m fine doing it in a linear order, but make it clear. 3 gym leaders’ descriptions say so (“most trainers start here / most trainers try this next / this lady’s the strongest in Paldea), and then the other 5 are who knows what. At one point I googled it just to check. You kind of hop back and forth, which isn’t a natural progression because you have a giant crater in the middle splitting the map in two.

      @@mrshmuga9 I suspect that their intention was that you could choose to go east or west out of Mesagoza, then fight two Gyms, a Star base, and a Titan until you hit a snag and had to check out the other direction.
      The problem is that if you do this, you'd absolutely flatten the bosses on the other side of the map due to the lack of scaling. Or you could just brute force your way through anyway, and get epically disappointed as the bosses become easier and easier when you make the full circle.
      It's like they had a semi-decent base idea, but didn't know how to implement it properly, yet did so anyway instead of revising the base idea. That's basically Game Freak's whole MO, come to think of it.

    At #7, there technically are side quests, but it’s only inside the academy. Whenever you finish a class with a teacher, they can be found in random areas of the school for you to find, each having a small situation that you get involved in. Someone spying on the math teacher, The language teacher finds an injured Pokémon, and another teacher who doesn’t want people to know their deep secret or it would ruin their image to the students, just to name a few. When you defeat all the gyms, the whole plot line for all of the teachers opens, but you need to finish all of the classes and finish the finals in order to go through each quest line and gain the trust of the teachers. There’s even some that can’t be completed until you beat the game because it’s a late game item you have to find.
    I was really hoping there would be side quests outside of the school and in the cities, heck, even some within the Team Star camps where the students need some “persuasion” to go back to school, be it a fetch quest, find a item or even a Pokémon they lost, or just a simple Pokémon battle to set them straight.

      Yes!! This game really made me realize how much I loved Legends Arceus. Like I put in over 200 hours into Legends Arceus but with SV I've 100% completed it, with nothing else to do, at 70 hours into it which feels so bad to me. 70 hours might seem like a lot to some people but it's the lowest amount time I've ever put into an open world RPG.
      Also the entire school mechanic is just dumb and lazy, like the "classes" you take are insanely boring and just feel like a rushed addition they made at the last second cause they forgot that the game takes place in school. Games like Fire Emblem 3H or Persona 5 mix a school system in them so well, which gives their games so much more depth and immersion. While in SV they're just an unfinished mess with a "relationship" system that has no meaning or rewarding nature to it.
      The more I think about it the more I realize that SV are probably the worst open world RPG's I've ever played. My playthrough of the game left me feeling waaay more frustration then enjoyment.

Seeing how much love and hard work was clearly put into certain aspects of this game (notably the entire ending sequence, which blew me away) makes me feel like the actual people making the game had every desire for it to be great, and are probably pained by seeing the unfinished state they were forced to release it in due to the PoCo's unflinching deadline. There's no excusing the huge problems the game has, but I think the answer to your question at 11:50 is absolutely YES, the artists and programmers and designers probably would have _loved_ for the game to be even better, but the businessmen and shareholders calling the shots couldn't care less.

Or just the numerous coding and work division issues in games by Game Freak ever since they went 3D, which is what some think is responsible for the NatDex dying, and which could likely come from those in charge of leading the projects having difficulties to adapt to how things changed.

      That would be quite weird, if Gamefreak would take orders from a company, that they own. If you didn't know, The Pokemon Company was founded by Nintendo, Gamefreak, and Creatures. Gamefreak owns The Pokemon Company. Not the other way around.
      I see this argument a lot, that TPC supposedly opresses poor Gamefreak and won't let them do all the things they love and cut them off with unrealistic deadlines, but that is frankly not true. If Gamefreak wanted to, they could take an ez extra year or two, delay the merch for a while, to put more time into polishing and fleshing out their games, but they themselves decide not to. TPC has nothing to do with that. Deadlines are set by Gamefreak and it is their own choice to deliver a subpar game for the full price.
      Maybe there are some devs at GF that actually care about the game, but most either don't, or they aren't all that good at making games, because what they presented us with is not only a technical mess, it's also not a good game in general and i can guarantee you, that you and everbody else only bought it and likes it, because it's Pokemon.
      I don't want to dive in to deep about the gamplay issues, but just the open world alone is a joke. There is no reason there at all why the open world is even here in the first place, except to stretch the game out and create the illusiomn that there is more to the games other than just the pokemon itself, when that's totally not the case. The only reason why the game is fun, is because it's the same old Pokemon formula and it wasn't even GF that came up with it, but Miyamoto himself. Because if GF would have been in charge of making a half decent game, they would have failed miserably and Pokemon would probably only exist in the TCG today. Just tke one look at any of the other games that GF has made outside of the Pokemon IP. I bet you won't know any of them as they are all mediocre failures.

      @@Smeik2901 Maybe you shouldn't make assumptions about people's opinions you're coming off as very smug. If you don't like the game then fair enough but I do think this game is better than the last couple Pokemon games we've gotten, none of which I really enjoyed all that much whereas I've had quite a good time playing Scarlet. Yes I would say the game being open world adds to it especially after games like Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield were so linear and railroad-y with hallways for routes. Those games didn't have a sense of exploration. I don't even think SV are perfect they're still heavily flawed but I think there's still a lot to like about them and like I said its the most I've enjoyed a new Pokemon game in years.
      As for GameFreak, sure yeah I can agree the higher ups there are responsible for the game being rushed but I don't blame the devs. Neither of us can say how many of them have real artistic passion and truly care about making the best game they possibly can and how many of them are just trying to get a paycheck, but either way the devs are being crunched and those kinds of conditions are out of their control and are going to hurt the game no matter what.

      @@koifish835 Am i wrong, though? The Pokemon premise is the only thing that keeps people engaged. Nobody would have looked at this game with their ass, or even paid 60bucks for it. Not Arlo, nor the original comment, nor you. That's not really making assumptions. It's just how it is.
      And i would like to argue that SV isn't any better in exploration than previous Games. One question: What are you exploring? A large field brimming with exciting nothing-at-alls? I would even say that exploration has been done better by most previous Pokemon games. There you actually had some stuff to find. Be it an underground ruin, some forest maze and sometimes even cool stuff like other dimensions.
      Every biome in SV is plain, empty and, in some cases like the snowfield, even downright ugly and hard to look at. Every point of interest is part of one of the three main quests and marked on the map.
      Items respawn and are just thrown everywhere without care. The entire open world is just filler. Empty space to connect the stuff inbetween. It would have been much better to either revert back to classic linear routes, which are way easier to fill and make interesting, or to actually put time and care into an open world so it becomes worthwhile.
      I'm not telling anyone, that they can't have fun witht the game. Bad games can be fun too. Im just tired of Pokemon fans pretending that the open world is anything more than embarassing. I'm certain some people like to walk around an empty field freely more, than a linear route, but in the end it doesn't matter if there is nothing to the connecting tissue.
      And concerning Gamefreak: Crunch is always bad and leads to worse products than they would have otherwise been. That doesn't protect the devs from being mediocre though. As proven by the aforementioned other GF IPs. Those didn't have the same harsh deadlines, that the pokemon games have so crunch was most likely not the issue here. Just incompetence.

That way if there’s a mob in your party that’s falling behind in levels you don’t have to grind them up. You can just turn their exp share on and let them catch up. I feel like this would be the optimal way for GF to do the exp share.

  • @franciscop9009
    @franciscop9009 Před rokem +27

    Hoo boy, where to start. I guess I’ll do my own 10 things.
    -Toothless difficulty. I know Pokémon games are easy, but coming off of the previous two having multi-phase boss battles with no in between healing and Cynthia having an overhauled team of actual strength even competitively, not one out of the twenty boss battles in the game made me even consider using half of my team, let alone my items and resources. Easiest champion in the series so far, not one difficult gym leader, etc. The early game showed some promise with the fire Team Star being a bit of a skill check and the titans pulling out more stops than usual, but it pewtered out almost instantly.
    -Bland, stiff world design. Not helped by the visuals, the world is just about as function focused as it can be. The only interactable NPCs are trainers, meaning that all you get out of non-main npcs is a (single Pokémon) battle, no dialogue, nothing. This is made even worse by the blatant disregard for building interiors, replaced almost entirely by UI menus that at best just do their job but more often than not feel cheap and haphazard. Every place in the game that you can actually interact with is either a sandwich shop or a battle arena: no houses, buildings, shops (outside the one (1) sandwich shop reused in several locations), there are exponentially more unused cardboard cutouts of buildings than there are places you can enter/visit. I know this has been a thing in Pokémon since day 1, but it is not a gameboy color game anymore. The switch can run Xenoblade 3, made with a fraction of the budget for a percentage of the profit. Pokémon shouldn’t get a pass.
    -About those visuals. They speak for themselves. The presentation in this game doesn’t know what it wants to be: cartoony characters wearing heavily matted outfits with hair modeled by the clump, walking on realistically textured paths and rocks, next to fields of untextured grass, all inhabited by Pokémon who range from almost untextured blobs of playdough to visibly resplendent and shiny hunks of metal. This of course all running on unstable 20FPS, unless it rains, which makes it both look and run even worse. The animations are also worth noting in how clunky they are. PLA is not a visual feat in basically any way, but the art direction in it at least had an identity, and the animations were somewhat believable, even if mainly function over form - Pokémon actually touched one another in battle, as an easy example. For one though, I’m pretty sick of Pokémon cheaping out on creating or utilizing assets in game. If you hand me something, either actually make at least a rough model of it, or just don’t have the animation of the characters pantomiming a give-receive interaction with their empty hands.
    -Good lord that performance. This isn’t just lamenting not being in the best resolution or consistent 60fps. It is not nitpicking to want the game not running at 60% speed for considerable chunks of gameplay. It is not nitpicking to want rare Pokémon not spawning inside walls. It isn’t nitpicking to not want to clip through said walls and end up sequence breaking. To not want everything to pop in 3 feet away from me, to want shadows to appear properly, at all, to not want Pokémon’s models to be Pokémon Rumble level polygonal when you start a battle, to want Raid battles to function, once again, at all; to want textures that don’t distort as you approach among endless other things. Playing this game has actually caused nausea on occasion because of the way it renders every possible thing on the fly, it mismatches audio and video, it chugs frame rate, and it’s camera does just about everything but what it’s supposed to do. This has never happened to me before, ever.
    -The gyms. This is pretty simple, the gyms overall are kind of absolute garbage. There’s one or two challenges that are somewhat ok (grass type and normal type come to mind), but overall they are middle school programming exercises that would get any college freshman laughed out of their class’ weekend game jam.
    -Lack of polish. Also pretty simple, sights of debug mode are very easily visible on regular gameplay. Poke balls clipped through the floor in story relevant areas, which are used in debugging as markers, just left there for everyone to see. T Posing in between cutscenes. Easily getting stuck in geometry. Audio messups. All things that a couple weeks (and that is generous) of quality control could have squashed easily.
    -This one might be opinion based, but some of the music overall seems very overused. The non-city areas all having 1 of 4 tracks make the world blend together. There are several standout tracks, don’t get me wrong, but the overall OST is kinda blindsided by about a dozen or more tracks that have the same motif being used in very similar ways, which also doesn’t help it blending in.
    -Lack of voice acting. Speaks for itself, but is especially noticeable in this games ample cutscenes, and in the endgame, in which, no spoilers, there’s a section that requires that you both read and traverse a difficult area at the same time. For over an hour.
    -The camera. Touched on it before, but once again it is surprising that something as simple as camera collisions can be slouch a big mess in such a high profile game. One out of 3 battles, easily, will involve the camera clipping through the floor or walls. It absolutely cannot handle interiors, magnetically attaching itself to the inside of their walls. The attempt made at making a lock in function is just useless, handing you basically no control over it and even when you think you got it, your trainer will just throw the poke ball to the floor below camera view most of the time.
    -Finally, the speed of battles is agonizing. The amount of unnecessary pop-up text boxes that take up seconds each, consecutively, every turn, combined with the sheer dead air that just happens between eeeverything makes every single battle a slog, which once again is not helped by the weird decision to make a noticeable portion of the dex be shorter in height than the tall grass, meaning they’re virtually invisible while dashing on your bike. What’s more, Pokémon will often spawn in groups, which in a vacuum isn’t a bad thing at all, but entering a battle with one of these ants will teleport your trainer seemingly at random, which often ends up in you being put in the middle of the hoard, which wouldn’t be a bad thing since you can just run away, but not only did they bring back speed-based escape, meaning your ability to even do it is inconsistent, but there also isn’t any intangibility after running away from battles, which will often end up in you being pingponged between several entirely unimportant battles for ages, and since Pokémon spawn everywhere, and there is no replacement for repels in this game, you just have to suck it up whenever it happens and scream at the void as minutes of your life fade away while being bullied by level 25 bebes that just happen to have higher base speed than your fully evolved lead.
    Overall this game could have been the refreshing next step that PLA teased, but Pokémon’s absolute need to cash in on the holiday season, and constraining its games to follow the breakneck pace of all other franchise materials once again robbed it from making one of their best games yet.

    • @franciscop9009
      @franciscop9009 Před rokem +8

      Bonus: most of the game’s UI is unintuitive and messy. Pokédex, map, boxes, the bag, they’re all very barebones in how they’re designed, scrapped staple functions they’ve had in previous games and are just a lot less useful than usual, to the point where, with the Pokédex for example, just pulling out your phone to look up a pokemon’s location will be a lot simpler than trying to use your Pokédex for it, and it will also tell you specifically where to go, whereas the Dex will just highlight a large, nebulous area where maybe you’ll find them, at some time of day, with some weather pattern, If you’re lucky. Provided they aren’t shorter than the grass, or the same color.

    The biggest thing that keeps me holding on thru this series’s tired formula is the thought of finding a new town and immediately beelining it to the boutique to see what new clothes they have.
    The saddest part is that this is the first time I ever wanted to join the “villain” team in these games. Normally they introduce them like “this is Team Flare, they want to blow up the world” meanwhile this game simply introduces its time like “this is Team Star, they don’t wear their uniforms properly!” and it had me thinking like woah that’s awesome, sign me up. I know they end up being like vicious bullies but the intro to them never shows any signs of that, it just shows that they don’t wear their uniforms right and they want people to do it too.

    My major issue with the post-game (but tbh you’ll experience a bit throughout) is raid battles feeling so unpolished they can be unfun. I don’t know how they messed up the system considering raid dens in SwSh were actually decent and felt fair, but the real time system + long animations that will eat at the timer feel less of a tug of war and more of a struggle of the snail’s pace that is the combat system.

  • @jasond.b-w

    It’s depressing to see accessibility changes being made for one generation and then snatched away again. I’m an incomplete quadriplegic, with only one of my hands having the mobility to use a phone/console/other items, and legally blind. SwSh gave us one-handed play, never to be seen again. PLA gave us the shiny sound…never to be seen again. And frankly removing the set mode is a hassle too, because now I have to relearn the order of the what text and buttons happen in a battle where I’ve always been used to not having to interact with anything but the four battle options until the sequence ends.
    They really seem set on isolating as many audiences as possible. Adult players by removing literally every difficulty customization option (exp share off, set mode, gen 5 hard mode also comes to mind), new players (with horrific barriers to using new mechanics and getting into official competition, like the ridiculous tera shard situation), disabled players, literally anyone who won’t tolerate the inexcusable unfinishedness they’ve committed to by keeping a schedule they clearly can’t handle…Honestly in a few more years, I don’t know who will be left besides that generation’s brand new players.
    It’s just really sad because this game has the best story and characters, a beautiful map design, great new pokemon, a legitimately interesting new mechanic, even the gym leaders and how they interact with their communities are so full of personality! But I’m stuck only being able to experience it through playthrough videos and every single one is more focused on the performance issues and bugs than the game itself.

    Being able to pin a specific pokemon's habitat to the map would have been nice so that I can quickly see if I'm in its area. I also understand that they were trying to be helpful by clearing your destination marker once you reached it, but I vastly prefer clearing it myself once I reach a location, because sometimes I'm trying to triangulate a specific spot/distance on the map and want to see how far it thinks I've moved from a set spot at different angles and elevations.
    A shadow under your hand for when you're making sandwiches would have been nice to help people with depth perception issues.
    The silent shiny thing almost screwed me over. I found a shiny Cetoddle at sundown by complete accident because the shiny colors look like what a normal one would look like under sunset lighting. I attacked it and saw the stars come out, but it dead serious can be mistaken for a normal one when fighting at sunset. If they casually sparkled on and off in the overworld, kind of like those stupid overworld teras that shine from 40,000 miles away even when de-spawned, that would help. They don't even need to shine to that same degree. Just do the shiny's battle sparkles, but in the overworld and with a little sound effect. It wasn't "fun" knowing I could have just walked past that thing thinking it was just sunlit. If a shiny spawns, you should be allowed to know if it's right next to you. Again, they had no issue alerting players of any and all uncommon teras.
    If they want to "maintain the difficulty" of getting them, they can hold special raids and quests for them like MonHunStories2, where alt colors are usually more difficult encounters that have different movesets and better stats. That game had no issue telling me exactly where Soulseer Mizutsune or Boltreaver Astalos were on the dungeon map. It just expected me to come prepared for a throwdown to get the egg. The challenge came from fighting it, not from whether or not I was allowed to know where it was.

In previous games, the only options I had were just to give one of them (since heaven forbid you use multiple prevolves) an Eviolite and mash B with every level up and hope to god the button didn't break or give them an Everstone, wasting their item slot to spare my B button.
    If they really don't want it the way it was in Legends, then maybe at the very least they could finally combine the effects of the Everstone and Eviolite? They both affect unevolved Pokemon, so why not? I don't want my mons to be unviable but I also don't wanna buy another controller.

Doing the base raids absolutely STUNK. I also wasn't huge on the changes to raids. There were multiple times I got 'timed out' by the enemy and that just was NOT fun because they spammed bullet seed? Seriously?

    The thing about the map is you can push the right stick to make it always stick to the oriented True North style.
    The thing about the combat is it seems like it was on purpose to show how good they could be with the models or something. Like everytime someone switches Pokémon, the point the ball, recall their Pokémon, look at the ball, nod approvingly, then put it on their belt and grab the next Pokémon. It's a LOT of that when you get to people that have more than on poke.
    As someone who's raising a bunch of dragons and Unova mons at the moment, there's NOT too much EXP, there's not enough! Grinding these bad boys and girls up to level 60 or so before they evolve is taking a LOT of effort. Dreepy doesn't even learn any new moves to keep the excitement up.
    I've never had it actually CRASH, but I have had it chug a bit when it gets to certain areas. The only other actual glitch I remember seeing is Pokémon spawning in walls and stuff.
    The thing that annoys me a lot was looking at the menus or your Pokédex doesn't pause the game. So, time goes by as my guy just apparently spent 18 hours standing in one place reading an encyclopedia on Pokémon. Likewise, when I hatch an egg, I'm stuck in place while I name it, watch the hatching animation, etc. But the rest of the world is not. Pokémon will run INSIDE ME and as soon as I get done naming the baby it's an instant battle. SO ANNOYING.

    It's so odd seeing every issues people have. I have had two crashes over the course of nearly 200 hours now and the worst performance issues have been a single instance of Miraidon disappearing when I ride it and some frame rate issues on the water. I have not encountered any of these major issues in my playthrough of Violet.

    I agree with everything except the battle camera because I like moving it to make it look like a POV from my Pokemon d: And yeah some sidequests would've really helped to buff up this game. My favorite Pokemon game, Shadows of Almia, had SO many sidequests, which is one of the reasons it's my favorite.

    I can gladly say my personal performance problems haven't ever been severe. The lake in particular is really laggy and there's obviously lag elsewhere, but I haven't ever had a crash, haven't had wild glitches, etc. The worst, imo, is that classroom scene where all the kids' legs swing at 4 FPS during the cutscene and then go back to normal as soon as the cutscene ends.

      @@danpmss the fact that they rushed it so much makes me mad, since you can see how the people making the game care, like.. I think this is the first time we have a real story where characters aren't one dimensional and have arcs, I love them all for the first time, if they give it 2 years this could have been such an amazing game

      @@SumTr011 I not only played, I finished it 100%. Nobody is defending the Pokemon Company, stop fighting strawmans lol
      The devs care, the franchise administrator doesn't, and that's why people have problems with the Pokemon Company, and not with Game Freak. They made the highest of efforts in this and basically tweaked and changed up the formula in several regards during this game.
      They just didn't have the time to polish it before release, and that's all on the management from the Pokemon Company and their stupid 3 year anime rule for releases, which is a known problem.
      The game still is the one of the best in the franchise, and almost all criticism towards it goes to the poor optimization and bugs, that's just facts.

    It feels like they gave us an “entitled page” map. Like everything is empty and redundant, I really couldn’t tell if I was in a different area at times. what’s the point of space if it’s just wide and barren. Like they just deposited Pokémon on a blank page with color. It made me value the older games for there individuality. It emphasizes how important details are to immersion when a 2d map is more immersive.
