I think Chris Pratt as Mario, and Jack Black as Bowser, are silly choices and it will probably be a lame-o movie, but I genuinely liked the Sonic movie and I'll probably see Mario regardless of how bad it is. Mario is still my favorite game franchise. I'd love to see a Zelda story movie.

I honestly feel like the main problem with the Minions is their voices. A large part of their comedy seems to be slapstick/physical comedy which has been a thing in animation for decades (like Tom and Jerry, Loony Tunes, or cartoons from the 30's). I think they'd be less seen as a "curse on animation" if they were relatively silent.

Miyamoto isn't a fan of big Mario stories because he thinks gameplay should always be the focus.
A movie doesn't have gameplay. The entire thing is all story.
And Miyamoto really understands how to make things entertaining, imo. He directed the Pikmin short films, and those are amazing. I'm sure he's had loads of great input for the Mario movie.
That being said, I'm also pretty worried, because Illumination convinced him to allow Chris Pratt to be Mario, and it's likely Illumination are convincing Miyamoto that some other bad choices are actually good ones... So uh... I'm not that optimistic anymore.

I will once again reiterate my thoughts on the cast:
Mario - Chris Pratt has proven his skill as a voice actor with the LEGO Movie (and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien which I am including here solely because of personal bias), which came out before he was famous. We don't know what Mario will sound like, but I'm sure Pratt can come up with a good voice for him.
Peach - I only know Anya Taylor-Joy from Split, but if that's anything to go by then she'll do a great job.
Luigi - Charlie Day is, quite frankly, perfect. I would have gone with John Leguizamo again because it would have been funny, but Charlie Day can absolutely portray a nervous wreck as he has proven many times.
Bowser - This is the one everyone seems to agree is good, so there's not much I can say about it.
Donkey Kong - Seth Rogan already kind of sounds like what DK would sound like if he had a human voice. If he just deepens his voice a little, it'll be a dead-ringer for the games.
Toad - It could be pretty hilarious if Keegan-Michael Key does a deep voice for Toad, and if that's the joke they're going for I'm here for it.
Foreman Spike - I honestly don't know crap about Sebastian Maniscalco.
Cranky Kong - I grew up watching Fred Armisen on SNL, and I can imagine him easily doing a "back in my day" kind of grumpy old man.
Kamek - Kevin Michael Richardson is usually known for his deep voices, but he has done voices that sound pretty much like Kamek before.

Nintendo's other franchises become insurance. Please let me explain:
When Mario does well, there will be sequels and spinoffs. Donkey Kong will happen before Luigi's Mansion or Captain Toad, but they're all up there as probable. I could even see a Super Princess Peach or Paper Mario eventually, but not likely within the first 8 movies in the series. Once it's an established series of movies, sales will start to trail off a bit eventually, but it will be a long while before that happens. To reinvigorate interest when it eventually does, another Nintendo property will be tried next. This will be Zelda, because obviously. This creates the need to tie the movie franchises together because that will allow them to also act as marketing for one another, increasing their overall effectiveness. Tying in Detective Pikachu (and whatever sequels it will inevitably get) as well would only be the smart thing to do, and they could probably get Sega on board to bring in movie Sonic (and its coming sequels), giving it a good solid base to work from of several IPs and plenty of movies.
So once they make a Smash Bros movie this way, all of these lesser known characters that are in Smash are now open for getting their own movies. (Most won't and some will only get one, but it makes a few more of them plausible, like Pikmin, which I could see being attempted as just a one-off eventually but becoming the Nintendo Cinematic Universe's equivalent of Minions, resulting in more sequels being made.) Also, Nintendo will want a way to use their Smash Bros IP effectively in the future, and there's no way for the next Smash game to top the current one, so they'll likely have to skip a console or two before releasing the next Smash game with a "back to basics" marketing strategy... But in a movie, they could sell that concept easily once established, and it could become their Avengers.
"But a billion different companies have tried and failed to create cinematic universes" - Yeah, because they all rush it too much and push overarching storylines instead of making each movie its own thing. Marvel's worked because they had enough establishing movies first, and each movie in the set works on its own (except for a couple of the ensemble movies that came in late enough to not need to work on their own anymore). Right now, Illumination isn't focusing on making a shared universe, they're focusing on one movie at a time. That is, coincidentally, the right way to make a shared universe, and the IPs exist to do it, so it's just a matter of long term success to make it eventually happen... And we all know that there will be great financial success here, for all the reasons you talked about in your video.
This will, in turn, feed back into the video games. It makes sense to release a Mario game alongside a Mario movie, right? Hype for either one feeds into the hype for the other, doubling the effect of all marketing for either. (I'll be surprised if the next Mario game doesn't come out around the same time that the movie does, even if they'll be unrelated this time through the cycle... Maybe a Mario Odyssey sequel?)
The result of all of this is that we could wind up someday seeing a Pikmin reboot video game based entirely on a movie version of Pikmin that are a Nintendo's Cinematic Universe's equivalent to Minions... How's that for a cursed monkey's paw wish?

Let me just predict the story here, like I think, Illumination would do it:
The movie starts off with Mario and Luigi working for some plumbing company in a city, with Spike being their boss.
Luigi is a coward, Mario is a classic "guy-who-wants-more-from-his-life", who is a little self-centred.
Eventually they find a portal or something and get to the mushroom Kingdom, where Princess Peach gets/got kidnapped by Bowser.
Bowser is a goofball villain, with Kamek as his smarter, more competent but loyal right hand and an army of minion-like goombas.
Mario and Luigi go on a journey through some dangerous areas towards Bowser's castle.
On the way they get attacked by some of Bowser's minions and also meet DK, who is your typical big, strong guy with a heart of gold.
Eventually they reach their goal, where they have a battle with Bowser, in which Luigi overcomes his cowardness and Mario overcomes his self-centredness, completing their arcs.
After Bowser's defeat they return to Peach's castle, do a dance party (cause Illumination)
    Happy End!

I think that what most people may not know about Illumination’s goal of making cost-efficient films is how they are really made. While the character design, writing, and storyboards are done in California, the actual animation process is outsourced via Illumination Studios Paris or formerly, Illumination Mac Guff.
This is in stark contrast to Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks, which often has movies budgeted in around $100-$150 million due to the animation process being done in California.
Also, Illumination also decides very early on if a film should go straight into development or be scrapped instead of spending years on pre-production like the other animation houses have often done.

I fully agree, there is no way this movie is gonna fail. No matter how good or bad it is, it's gonna make all the money in the world. They could just c/p the 90's movie plot into CGI and I'm pretty sure it would still make bank for everyone involved.

Oddly, I recently wrote about this for a college economics paper. The benefit of brand extensions like remakes and sequels is to reduce risk to production companies. Remakes and sequels don't often make more money than a successful original IP but they consistently do well enough at the box office to pay for themselves. I think the mario film will probably be incredibly successful but I have no doubt that it will at least make the producers their money back and cover Chris Pratt's salary.

My question with these kinds of situations is if a company has an IP as popular as Mario, guaranteed to make money in most scenarios, why not go with an animation studio that would make a more critics-pleasing movie, like DreamWorks (also part of Universal)? Companies take a safe bet, and they spoil it in a bid to make it even safer, it seems.

Personally I think if the movie ends up successful then nintendo could make movies and Tv shows for there other properties (Ie. Kirby, Metroid, Splatoon, Zelda, star fox ect) personally I would love to see a kirby movie in threaters, soooo I am hoping this movie is at least succesful enough to tell Nintendo "Hey, that Mario made a lot of money! So movies of these other properties are profitable too!"

I'm not too worried about Miyamoto. He has said in interviews that he consider games and film to be two completely different medium that has very little in common, and that if you ask him, story is not the point of video games. It needs to be there to set the player in a context and give them a goal, but that's about it. So he doesn't hate stories in general, he just doesn't think it's important to have lot's of plot in video games.

I’d say this will surpass Sonic and Detective Pikachu due to the fact it’s a complete CG film. Every single video game movie has been a live-action insert “these creatures live in our real world” or “this character came through a portal into our world so now they just exist with people”. To have a video game movie that’s like a multi-million dollar super long cutscene, that would open the doors to many similar video game movies.
    PLEASE let the Luigi’s Mansion become a reality. I’d say 2028 - 2030, maybe!
