I recently smuggled a mushroom to first against my friends, then when a blue shell came, I perfectly timed it to both dodge the blue shell and do the bookshelf tunnel shortcut in Luigi's mansion. It felt so epic to not only dodge a blue shell, but also have it perfectly timed with a _mandatory mushroom_ shortcut.
This is very hard to get used to when you played MK Wii for years and start playing MK8 Deluxe. Luckily I memorized it pretty easily when I first started playing.
I accidentally pulled this off a week or so ago with family, I didn't even have a tutorial but all I was told by you is that it has to be done right before the shell hits and I guess I just knew, thanks!

The fact that not everyone knows this when a mushroom was just one of two or three ways to dodge a blue before the super horn was introduced somewhat makes me feel old and sad 🫠

This technique is really helpful and I successfully dodged it by using the mushroom. My siblings were shocked on how I used it when we played Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
tip: human reaction times are slow, so you gotta press the button when you see the belly, because humans are slow, we dont respond immediately and we hit the button when the spikes appear
It's because for a brief moment during the activation, you're treated as if you have a star powerup. That's why other players take damage if you use it just before touching them as well.

This also worked in Mario Kart Wii and was like the only way to dodge Blue Shell with an Item.
You were also able to do it in double dash, even being able to do it via mini turbos
I think this mechanic is present in all MK games that have the blue shell. Even Tour has it and gives you a bonus for doing so
