  • @ARHaslage
    @ARHaslage Před 9 dny +28

    I am going to correct some material from Reddit... Nintendo did anonymously buy a MIG Switch as soon as it was available. They do this for all mod tools. The MIG does not inject its own code into the Switch. It simply simulates a game selection process as an intermediary. What Nintendo detected was multiple, simultaneous uses of some certificates. They "expire" the certificates and then bans any accounts that try to access the game online with said "expired" certificate. The only way they could suspect the MIG is if its programmers were dumb enough to leave a signature or file on the Switch.

    • @ARHaslage
      @ARHaslage Před 9 dny +9

      So, things like trying to update the game or connect to multiplayer requires certificate checks. Think of the certificate as a license. Nintendo is essentially revoking it. Nintendo does not care if your friend copied your game, with permission or not, everyone gets banned.

      Can ppl buy a used game and not be able to play it since ppl have that on their mig? So ppl could dump the game to the mig..then sell the game to gamestop and it comes unplayable to the owner of the actual cart?
      I see Ron is talking about that now

    • @ARHaslage
      @ARHaslage Před 9 dny +8

      Essentially, the problems begin if someone buys a Switch game and trades it in or rents and returns it after cloning/dumping it. If by some coincidence, multiple people are trying to access online with the same or an "expired" certificate, the system automatically detects the simultaneous usage and reacts accordingly. GameStop, GameFly, Mom & Pop Shops... None of them have a way to detect cloned games prior to accepting them. MIG essentially creates a method ripe for abuse and in the case of GameStop, a Nintendo merchandise partner, creates a problem for Nintendo if they cannot control the secondary market thier partner relies upon. While GameStop is relatively small potatoes in gaming these days, Nintendo ignoring such issues would also create an unwanted precedence for any similar future mods. I would not recommend buying pre-owned or renting Switch games at this point.

    I’m not fully against piracy, it has its purposes.
    But anyone who thinks you should be free of any repercussions to pirating, emulating, or modding current systems in any way is insane.
    When the inventor of the mig switch confirmed individual carts have IDs that shouldn’t be copied they had a moral duty to not make the product until another method was found.
    Doesn’t matter how much they advertised it to be used for only legal purposes and only your own games … everyone knows what “rom carts” are used for. And it’s not for your own backups.
    But here we are, and everyone is acting like Nintendo is evil.
    They are protecting their IP which is their entire business and existence. Modders and pirates aren’t evil either, but there’s nothing victimless about it.

    I've been following the mig testing on a certain site's forum for months now. Here's what I understand about the whole certificate file weirdness. Yes, you can use a different certificate renamed to match the xcf file (eg the rom) and it will work on your switch. However, it WILL get you a ban if you go online AT ALL with that switch after. There are logs deep inside your switch that cannot be erased that will report back to big N. And of course, simultaneous uses of the same certificates is going to get flagged, which absolutely should cause a major problem with renting games and like, getting them from the library or borrowing them from friends very soon. However, if you use the mig for its "intended purpose" (for once, one of these types of things were absolutely serious about that), and use it to back up your own games and not like, give the files to anybody else, it's going to be read exactly like the original copy, and everything will be fine. Basically the main reason to get one at this point is to organize your game collection. even then, don't bother with the original mig, go for one of the followups already out that has some sort of button pressing system instead of the eject method. Some even have it so long holds go backwards in the game queue.

    Funny, I ordered a dumper yesterday before I knew about the lawsuit. I wonder if/when I'll get a refund. All I wanted was a legal way to get ROMs to emulate on my Steam Deck. I feel no remorse for Nintendo, but I still didn't want to pirate anything I didn't own and could still reasonably obtain. Would some owners abuse the MIG Switch? Yeah, it was inevitable. Do I think the general public would use this for piracy? Not really, especially given the known issue of having multiple of the same keys online at the same time. Nintendo loves itself too much and their fans not enough. They'll give you a free sticker on your birthday but still make you pay $60 for a launch title. There really wouldn't be such a piracy problem if they didn't keep the prices so high or straight up stopped selling the game. I've got a well used v1 switch, some games don't work so good on it. I'd rather spend $70 on the MIG dumper for a better experience than spend $350 on the newest Switch that barely plays games better than the v1. Unfortunately, it seems the MIG switch & dumper are dead and hundreds, probably thousands of people, have lost money with no guarantee of reimbursement

    While I hate that Nintendo has been DMCAing/suing other things (I care for gaming preservation), it's a good thing that the MIG Switch has been ceased since MIG Switch owners can abuse the MIG Switch/Dumper and harm innocent consumers buying used games in the process, even if that is not the developer's intention. Because of the existence of the MIG Switch and clones, gamers are no longer safe buying used physical Switch games without the risk of potentially being banned if it was copied and used on a MIG Switch so while I do like the idea of copying backups for personal use, it also created this risk for everyone else that has nothing to do with this and there will be innocent gamers being banned for buying used games that don't know anything about MIG Switch or MIG Switch clones.
    So I am kind of glad that Nintendo quickly stopped them from distributing, but Nintendo should have stopped them sooner before they started distributing them.

    I think the Switch 2 will be similiar to the Switch everyone has now in terms of the cartridges due to backwards compatibility so maybe Nintendo is trying to put a stop to all these flashcarts and stuff so people don't immediately have easy access to pirate Switch 2 games as well.
    Imo Piracy is going to happen one way or another with Nintendo in general since they always use weaker hardware which makes it easier to emulate compared to Playstation 4-5 and Xbox and even some Xbox 360 games are still difficult from what Ive heard, If I was Nintendo I would be making roms more accessible in like a Nintendo ecosystem wether thats a launcher for a store similiar to Steam on your PC or some app on peoples phones where people could legally go straight to Nintendo and spend $2-5 on an old NES game or something and then be able to play that same game on their switch, phone, tablet, pc, etc but that's just me I think Nintendo is in a losing battle its similiar to hackers in video games where the hackers will always be 1 step ahead and instead of trying to fight piracy and preservation they should take advantage of it because many people want to play old video games and there's a decent number of them that are inaccessible and will be lost to time without preservation and archives.
