As a retired cop with 31 yrs, the only suggestion I would add would be to add a pistol on ur side whenever searching with a shotgun. Then, if during the search, there’s ever a struggle over the shotgun, u can disengage and immediately revert to the pistol.
Great point!!! BUT 99.9% of people will never do that Lol 😂 I agree, but it’ll never happen.
Sling it
THIS! When I take carbine training we always train with a side arm and work transitions. My edc handgun rarely leaves my body so I have a set up where I can quickly and easily holster my side arm and get my rifle sling on. Dry practice is KEY (and free lol) I started running drills on opening and accessing my safe in total darkeness before my first gun was even in my possession then moved on to doing the same with holstering the handgun and grabbing rifle or shotgun quickly, quietly and efficiently. These can all be life savers once locked into muscle memory. One last thing is how you walk and move your feet! Step/ roll softly heel to toe and NEVER EVER EVER cross one leg over the other traveling sideways! A simple side to side step without your ankles/feet crossing will prevent any chance of getting tangled up, making more noise than necessary and God forbid tripping and giving away your location and tactical advantage. Train smart and stay safe guys!
How does one sight in a red dot on a shotgun? Slugs?
Great point, but I’d imagine that’s be hard to do when you here that bump in the night at 3:30 AM and you wake up in your boxers.
On my Berrera 1301 Tactical I added a red dot and a light. It is absolutely ready to go. After several shotgun training courses and months of self training, I am now a true believer in the shotgun as a very diverse and extremely effective tool.
Have you found Trench Grenade yet? He has a lot of great shotgun content and he'd agree with you.
@@KalashZikov Thx, I'll check it out

Benelli M4 , best purchase I ever made , quality reliable. Accurate , easy to use . It’s not meant for anyone who makes excuses not to own one.
Here's an excuse. Am poor

It’s worth every penny. Absolutely love mine. Three inch magnum buck kicks about like an AK. Wonderful weapon

@@tetedur377 I am poor. I refuse to give up any of my vices. I own a tricked out, 922r compliant, Benelli M4. Where there is a will, there is a way.
The average home cant afford a Benelli M4. Mossberg 590 for the win.
While I am lucky enough to have the m4 and 1301LTT, I agree my 590a1 is just fine and I am well armed with any of the three mentioned.
Enjoy your 590 as it will serve you well!

What is the best defense shotgun? The one you own and are good at using!
Best answer
I got a Remington pump with a tube extension, flashlight, and sling, im running number 4shot and 00 shot. I can fit around 8 or 7 depends on the shell length.
Also, I humbly recommend the 'Youth Model' butt stock. Knocks a little bit off the length of pull, which helps tighten up your grip/control of the SG.
He's had a Benelli 12-gauge growing up as a kid, that I used for hunting I absolutely loved it.
Absolutely, I used my M4 dove/quail hunting a few times.
@@hoffmiermp I used to hunt dove and quail with a Remington 1100. The main reason I stopped is because it's a pain in the ass to pick all the bird shot out of the meat. lol
How about an exotic Maverick 88 sawed to 19’?
Love the Benelli M4!
A second vote for a good sling. I have a custom sling from Blue Force Gear on my Benelli M4. They're bomb-proof and compliment the M4 perfectly.
"bomb-proof" 🤣that's going to be the least of your worries
Awesome conversation. I am looking to upgrade from my pump to a semi auto and I have been so focused on getting a reliable platform, I kinda wasn’t thinking of the actual purpose of the tool. Now I’ve got my focus on the best tool for the job in addition to the quality of the platform. I appreciate all the useful information.
Always putting out good content!!
Thanks for the observations and advice. Home Defense Shotgun, got me checking on improving mine.
Thank you for this video. It has helped me to start my preparation for defense of my home.
Good job and I very much appreciate your knowledgeable opinions on all types of guns and the best options for them in various situations. Also I am very appreciative of your hard work in advancing knowledge of firearms and the political situations that are unfolding around the country. Thank you so much for all your hard work and support!
I shoot skeet often and am used to pointing the shotgun at moving targets. I have a Big Dot front sight from XS on mine and find that perfectly adequate for my needs inside and around my home.
Big Dot on a 12 gauge is the way!
I just bought my Benelli M4 tactical Super 90 and I'm so happy. Can't wait to try it
Mr. Colion Noir:
I would like to say that it's a pleasure to watch your videos. You present your topic(s) very clearly and to the point. You don't add a bunch of hype to the videos. I find this technique of videos very easy to follow. Please keep up the fantastic work and stay Safe as possible.
Your message you're always informational and it's awesome to see what you're doing thank you for your gun safety.
One thing you should consider is a sling. Very important, unless you want to place your shotgun on the ground. Any two point sling, where you can even do an "African carry" or an "American carry" if you have to. Also, buy a case of 00 buck and look at your pattern at 10, 15, 20 and 25 yards. You don't want any fliers, take pictures if you have to. 00 buck can be inconsistent and vary by lot. So if you buy a case, then they will likely be the same. This is what I was told to me by Louis Awerbuck (RIP), who was once the chief rangemaster of the Gunsite Academy.
He probably doesn't have a sling manufacturer as a sponsor.
Great video. Exactly what I was looking for
I really enjoy all of your videos. Always very informative, great job 👍
Brother Man, Thanks for all you do!
Nice. I did research and came up with nearly three same plan as you. I've got a Beretta 1301 Tactical. Extended tube with full length Briley m-lok handguard with a 2000 lumen light directly underneath on a quick release mount and a remote switch on the right side with the cable managed. Vickers sling mounted to the buttstock and two QD Mount locations on the left side of the handguard. Two Briley stage savers on the right side for specialty rounds and a Holosun HE510C-GR Open Reflex Sight. I'm working on customizing a velcro shell strip that will hold 6-8 rounds which can be easily swapped out when emptied.
The most important thing of all is practicing on loading a beast like the Beretta 1301T or the Benelli M4 because they will let loose rounds quicker than you realize. Lol
Colion, maybe cover some more affordable set-ups?… We’re not all lawyers who can drop 3.5K on a shotgun when we like.
I'm a mechanic, and own a m2, m4 , 1301, 590 retrograde mossberg, and shockwave 20 gauge. I'm not rich by any means , I guess it depends on your priorities. I good shotgun can be passed down to family. I can say you can't go wrong with mossberg. Extremely reliable, semi or pump. For the money.
Thanks for all you do for the public
The push-pull technique is another necessity when using a shotgun
Thank you, Rob Haught!
Sorry, no.
P/P doesnt change any recoil, it just adds tension to the shooting system.
It is a flashy range technique but in the real world you will be doing other stuff with your 'push' hand, like opening doors, activating lights, holding a phone etc.
End of the day, action / reaction, recoil still travels into your body and is absorbed by mass and feet to floor traction
P/P just makes you tired faster.
Another great and informative video, thank you so much.
Thanks for broadening my perspective on home defense!
You always have good programs knowledgeable programs that we can learn from which is nice
Great input on setting up a shotgun for home defense.
I own a Benelli M4 and I love it. Great for home defense, very enjoyable for short range target/skeet shooting. With the pistol grip, recoil is negligible.
I have Benelli M2 with Mesa Tactical pistol grip butt stock ammo carrier and 8 round extension. Love it!
A close friend has one; I've fired it shooting skeet and I love the M4.
The AnS shotgun billet trigger housing is a nice upgrade. It is relieved to allow better loading access.
Classic Firearms is importing Turkish Walnut field stock and handguards for $75 shipped. I just installed a set and I'm very pleased. One note is the bolt they supply has the wrong thread pitch to secure the stock to the recoil spring housing. The correct bolt size is M8-1x60mm and is available at most hardware stores.
He brings up many good points. And just personally, I can't fault Garand Thumb and his setup for this gun. But of course, that's just my particular taste and preference. Good video Colion!
Very useful and informative... great.... thanks for sharing... God Bless you Greetings from a traditional Indonesian gold prospector 🇮🇩🌸👍👍
You haven't even watched it yet to know if it's informative? What a silly comment.
Bennilli is good if you got the money. For those who cant afford id recommend Mossberg's Tactical 930 or 940 semi automatic shotguns.
I own a M4 and a Beretta 1301 and like them , but my Mossberg 930 is my go to shotgun…..
Yeah I like to think of defensive weapons as disposable. Glocks and M&Ps and mossberg 500s or mavericks. Whatever you use is going to be taken as evidence anyway maybe for good. I'd hate for someone that doesn't have much money to think you need to save up 2 grand for a single weapon. I can't imagine losing a 3 thousand dollar custom 1911 because some crack head broke in through my window. Let the plastic guns do the work and leave the toys in the safe.
@@hks956 agree
Why is it always about the latest and greatest. I've had a Mossberg 500 for nearly 40 years. Many others have the Remington Pump or Auto Loader. Proven and time tested. Mine has 1000s through it from trap to deer loads and many nights standing a post outside my home.
Because to them it's not the latest "Gucci" gear.
Because it’s better
Would you rather have a 22 revolver or an AR for home defense. It's never wrong to do better.
I will say that if what you've got, works as good as semi auto shotgun for you, then stick to what you've got.
I bought a Sulun Tac 12 (I couldn't justify the M4 price tag) I've sent up my gun like yours. Thank you so much!
I’m shopping for a home defense shotgun. I was considering this and now for sure will be my next purchase
I had an argument with a dude who prefers the plastic side saddle because for him, it's stable but I picked velcro on mine simply because I can rip it off and put a new one right away
The first shotgun I fired was the Benelli M4 (M1014 USMC). I eventually bought 1 during the COVID era for 2200. Overall the money I spent adds up to over 3 grand. I eventually sold that shotgun and later bought an A300 Ultima Patrol. Out of the box that weapon is everything you want for a combat/home defense shotgun and for only 1 grand. I added a surefire x300u and an aimpoint acro p2. Still less money than a base Benelli M4. I know some are going to say that the 1301 and M4 have a better operating system. They’re absolutely right but we all know that most likely we won’t be able to outrun the gun. Save your money and get a better package deal. Or not and go spend the money for the Benelli M4 name and then stick it in the safe cause that gun ain’t going get used like it should.
i paid a pretty penny for my custom 1301 and i dont intend to baby it at all. asides good cleaning and the such but i like my firearms to be clean and ready to rock. even with it in bronze i am not worried about scratches or anything else if it needs used it gets used no tears here. got it for a purpose while keeping my mind open to more possibilities it might serve in. i like things to have multiple purposes so it can meet more ends.
Nice to know that the Benelli M4 will still be around in 180 years!
It's weird when someone puts down such a nice piece of art to say they spent too much, so they sold it for less, then bought a cheaper gun. If you bought a gun to keep in a cabinet, you bought a trophy.
I bought the M4 for multiple reasons. I don't like glocks and think there are multiple flaws for why people like them. I don't like them, but if someone else does better shooting than i do, i can't explain to them why they shouldn't like them.
To each they're own.

Great stuff!
Looks good. After a few classes, removed the red dot from my 1301. XS Big Dot on the front is sufficient for my needs. Accessories can be a real rabbit hole...
been waiting for this one
Great video and very informative.

Best 2A content on the internet! Slugs or buckshot??
First thing I'd say is a ready round clipped in front of the ejection port seems like a really good idea.
I'm really tempted to get the Stoeger clone myself.
match savers are def a nice addition incase the side saddle runs dry and you need that one last round
Fantastic video!
Thanks Colion
I love the Benelli shotguns.. But Colion I really enjoy my VR80 shotgun.. faster reload and no fails yet!
I used to run a cordura/elastic side saddle on my 870. But, I found that, even sitting by the bed unused, the elastic eventually gives out, and shells end up on the floor. I've sense switched to a solid plastic side saddle with velcro backing.
The comparison with the M2 is interesting because I feel like the M2 is a more practical starting point for an HD build. All you have to do is buy a Nordic extension kit with clamp and rail and you're done. You're up to full capacity and you have a light mount. With the M4, you have to replace the tube and still buy a separate light mount (or handguard). That brings the cost up close to $2500 compared to a built-out M2 which only costs about $1500.
I try to budget things but if it's for home defense, there shouldn't be a budget (within reason with your own financial situation).
Too many spend all their money on guns and 0 training or range time. Training and range time are worth more than a top of the line gun any day.
My set up Remington 1187 slug gun,my Remington 1100 12 gauge and my Remington 1100 28 gauge pre bullshit, ain’t no body getting in forget getting out. God bless brother.
Nice setup.
Good video 👊🏻
Hearing protection is important because I have used a shotgun in close quarters and it sucked ❗️💥
Most excellent.
My primary home defense firearm is a Glock 22. My "you're explicitly encouraged to remain _outside_ my home" firearm is the now discontinued Browning BPS High Capacity 12-ga. All black, ambidextrous (top tang safety and bottom eject), five rounds of 2.75 and five more in a side saddle, 20" barrel, silver bead sight, light with pressure switch on the forearm. My sporting gun is also a 12-ga BPS, and having this guy work and feel just like it makes a lot of sense. I haven't needed to use it in the 10+ years I've owned it, but I'm very confident it can do the job.
I'd argue the beretta 1301 tactical. Not as bougie as the bennelli m4, but arguably just as reliable and easy to fire.
100%agree, sir!
agreed. went away from my benelli m4 and to a Langdon tactical 1301 and its been lighter and just as easy to shoot.
I have not shot , a Benelli M4, however, I have the Beretta 1301 and a Mossberg 930. Haven’t even thought about the Mossberg since. The Beretta is just everything.
@@torment12345 that's my dream shotgun
The 1301 is similarly priced. The M4 is only a couple hundred dollars more depending on which model. Black or the silver H20 version.
IWI Tavor TS12. Red dot. Irons. Bright light. 15+1 variety pack on board. All less than the M4 by itself and way more compact
I don't have an autoloader and don't have plans to buy one. I do like the options here to set up my Mossberg 590.
As long as there isn't a hostage situation in your home... This platform makes sense.
On my Beretta 1301 tactical, I can load a slug in seconds. 3 inch group at 50 yards.
I would bet that if you measure the distances in your house, and then pattern your shotgun at those distances, you’d probably be surprised at how little the pattern spreads, and therefore how accurate you can be, in actual house distances.
Lol, unless your head is directly behind the hostage's, I win.
Shotguns barely spread at all at CQB ranges.
In a hostage situation you have total control with the 12ga. They can't move without guaranteed getting killed and the police are coming. So the only way to escape alive is to release the hostage and leave immediately to work the police response time window. Unless there are 2 or more left, in which case you just disable one then go back to working on the one with the hostage.
Gotta tell them "leave the hostage now and I won't pursue. If you don't i guarantee you are NOT leaving alive."
My Remington 870 has #2 magnums with improved choke. I believe this will work.
Yup its a classic
Also the Mossberg 500
Briley Tactical out of Houston will fix the fore-grip heat shield issue. Theirs covers more of the barrel and allows for C clamp grip without getting burned.
Finally placed an order for one of these. Snagged one of the limited edition midnight bronze versions. Imma have to get the 7 round tube cerakote-ed and find some way to keep the colors right on the stock portion while converting it to a collapsible. Im torn on optic choice though. I might paint an aimpoint t2 and mount it on the scalerworks low profile mount or just get the Eotech ESP3 in bronze and call it a day.
Thank you so much
No link for thermal optic in description. Make sure you take care of your advertisers so you can keep bringing us the juicy 2A content. Also, I want a thermal optic.
Thanks, Colion~
My shotgun is my go to for home defense. I back it up with a handgun. I like the shotgun because it is scalable in terms of ammunition. 00, slugs etc. I like #4 police buck. 27 pellets at close range will get it done. It's the same mass as 00 but less likely to over penetrate. The next round is 00 just in case. Worst case scenario I have an AK on standby.
Just tested some 00 flight control at 25 yards, modified choke(not supposed to matter with this ammo), 25 yards, M2 24". The 5 groups ranged from 7"-12". I was hoping for 3" or 5" at 25yards.
Mossberg 930 refined with a few mods works for me. Shotguns are sledgehammers. 🇺🇸 🦅 2A
Nice rig
I Run a Mossberg 500 for home defense, first rounds birdshot, back 6 double ought….
Ditch the bird shot. We don’t shoot to harm. Doesn’t look good to a jury.
For me I prefer small and fast. So, a bullpup is my choice. I don't have to swing a longer barrel around and it delivers the same punch as any other 12 gauge.
That's a good set up for home defense
7:53 red dots look cool though. You don't have to use it. It doesn't have to work if it looks cool enough to be honest. It's just added weight to look cool
A bit long for my liking in the house being close quarters. Maybe a Tavor TS12 or a KSG. Having to swing that long stick around corners and such. I use a tavor and it’s nice and compact.
The best setup is the one you’re comfortable with, able to maneuver and shoot accurately in crammed in areas to areas with lots of space so everyone is going to have their own different setup up my setup is perfect for me but bad for a lot of others my shotgun is an AR-12 it’s just like an AR-15 but chambered in 12 gauge and charging handle on side because I can maneuver with it in all areas, comfortable with it and most importantly I can shoot accurately with speed and precision even in tight spaces
That's a good shot gun for home defense. Expect to your up grades on your shot.
Ditch the rail and stipple the front handguard. Every inch of it. Get an IWC light mount, and the g and g rear sling near the reciever and use a 1 point sling.
Colion, I 3D print carbon fiber Benelli M4 Handguards. It shields the barrel heat and is less then half the weight of aluminum. I’m gonna send you a free one when I start selling them in the coming weeks.
I don’t know many folks that can afford a tricked out M4 . Mostly 500& 590 pumps around here. Maybe a few 930s or 940s and some 1100/11-84s . When I get the funds together it’ll be a Beretta A300 for me. Until my old Bennelli nova tactical will have to do.
A have a Maverick 88’ for home defense…no light nor red dot still’ though!
Im looking to hear about the latest shooting in Jacksonville in your perspective...ill wait
Dont forget guys you may have a chance to make same upgrades with Panzer M4 model too…
Looking forward to see a Benelli M4 and Panzer M4 compare video from Colion
Same shit same CNC machining anyone that says otherwise is wrong
I love my affordable Mossberg 590.
I position a bandolier of buckshot shells and my electronic earmuffs that allow normal hearing next to my quick open safe with my Taran Tactical John Wick edition Benelli M-4 for my home defense set up.
He threw in “Robust.” John Wick reference to the Benelli😎
"I dont wanna say battle space. Crisis site." That cracked me up.
Great video thanks for post!!!
My question is would you use the same type of red dot on a shotgun that you'll use on a pistol?
I prefer a saiga-12. With an added gas port, properly tuned autoplug, booster puck, and reprofiled and polished fcg, bolt, and carrier, she's flawless even with low brass and uber-reliable.
Did it take a lot to get it there? Sure, but it has been an absolute pleasure to shoot since 2010 and I shoulder it every chance i get!
how do the loaded mags hold up? i have been hearing and reading that they start to distort the shells after awhile due to the high spring tension needed to properly and reliably feed the round?
@clintkees6158 I only use AGP, which has a steel lip that hold the rim of the round. No distortion, they're always loaded. When I get to the range, I unload the buckshot and load up low brass. When I leave, I load buckshot and slugs back in.
Here in Austria it's almost impossible to get any pump action shotgun as civilian, even with a weapons licence (like a drivers licence to own guns here). But I could easily buy a Benelli M4 or other self loading shotguns with no problem...
what a shame, you blokes need to change that!
I need a longer magazine tube for my Mossberg 500 they fits my 20" barrel. The problem is it looks like they don't exist.
The reason I have this is, it's my first gun and I also shoot trap with it.
Benelli M3 all day 💯
I have a Mossy 500 pump. 20" security model. I added a hogue 12' LOP buttstock , a streamlight TL-Racker 1000 lumens forend light. Vtac sling, velcro side saddle, & another buttstock shell holder . A heatshield. I keep bertha in cruiser ready mode. I got 21
Federal flite control 00 buckshot shells onboard. If I can't handle whatever comes through my door at zero dark thirty with that, I'm in a shit storm for realzzzzzz.
Got me a Winchester Sxo pump action with a light a side saddle
