If you get a Maverick 88 opt for the 20 inch barrel to get an extra round in the tube.

I have an M88, equipped with a red dot rail and a spring loaded folding stock and it is perfect! A reliable, undemanding weapon that shoots anything!

Remington quality is not what it used to be. New ownership. Go with the Mossberg 590. 18 1/2” 12ga 6-1. Retrograde. The walnut furniture is beautiful and it is an excellent home defense shotgun.

A good budget 500 or 870 is the way to go. No worries that once the need is over you have a live round chambered with an auto when the threat is over and not dependent on ammo power. Plus if ever did use it will be confiscated for evidence, not good with a $1,000+ gun.

Good point. And one I think about with EVERY weapon.Spend $2 grand for the attorney to get your 1$ grand shotgun back. NO CHARGE for the case numbers GOUGED into the receiver/buttstock. The better the wood, the deeper the gouge.

A common sense list. Putting the cheapest gun first is a good move. Not everyone can afford the M4.

I'm a Mossberg loyalist, but that Benelli is a sweet boom stick. It's almost impossible to beat the Mossberg Shockwave for home defense though.

Every shotgun can easily jam..and its usually the ammo or user errors.i had some Remington black case 2 3/4 inch bird shot that literally jamed in 2 different mossberg 500s a 590a1 and Stevens 320 , a charles daly 320 tactical, these shells we're absolutely defective and there are lots of ammo like this

If you are choosing a shotgun and your not a person who is into guns and will most likely have several guns down the line. Get a pump action I don’t care what anyone says semiautomatic shotguns will never be as reliable as a pump and there are some great autoloaders out there but you can shoot any load that will fit into your chamber with a pump gun slugs to rubber buckshot.and the berettas the Banelli shotguns are crazy expensive the civilian one is almost 2 grand this video doesn’t tell you that about the best shotguns here.beretta is a bit cheaper but you can buy like 3 Mossbergs for what it still cost. They kick a little harder the pumps but it’s about as close as you can get to 100 percent reliable nothing is but it’s as close as you will get. There are also reasons why Mossberg is better then Remington. 1 it has duel extractors but it can run on one so you have a back up. One basically 2 they can be worked on by yourself from home if the ejector goes on your Remington it’s gotta go to a gun smith for repair it’s milled into the receiver I believe not 100 percent on that but it’s going to a smith either way. 3rd Mossberg is still American family owned. Old Remington 870s are amazing probably better smoother definitely over a Mossberg but I would be hesitant on the newer made stuff there quality control is not what it was long ago.I wouldn’t pick a shotgun for home defense but if you want to definitely get a pump it can do anything. Get a longer barrel to go with that 18.5 or 20 inch barrel a couple different types of shells and it can get you dinner as well. It can be a one gun option for someone who wants to just have one gun cause there not into guns.
