Too many people think they're going to go John Wick and clear their entire house single-handedly. I'm not saying that's impossible to do, just that it is not the most prudent course of action in most cases.

I’m in the military and spent some time working for DHS…cut the pie and don’t over penetrate (especially with your muzzle). Lastly, once you secure some space, step into it and own it.
The only reason why I wouldn’t use a shotgun if I’m alone is because I have to dedicate both hands to it. With a handgun, I can aim my gun and use the other hand for a flashlight or open doors etc. If I’m attacked, I can hopefully use one hand to fend off to create distance, then operate my weapon.

There's a good argument for those Turkish bullpup shotguns; they are a lot handier than a standard-layout shotgun in confined spaces. Being able to clear a doorway without having to take the stock off your shoulder is useful. And the weight-balance makes it easy to shoulder it with one hand, allowing you to use your free hand to open doors/call police/ect.

I do try to practice the above as much as I can.
However, if time or circumstances do not allow, solve the problem and you can deal with any hearing issues tomorrow or when you and your family are safe.
I have two units that I use.
The Razors and MTS Supreme Pro X.
I find the MTS allow for directional sound location much better than the Razors.
I am not sure if the Razors allow you to be able to tell the origin of sound or not?
They don't seem to for me?
The MTS unit lets me determine where the sound came from and protect my hearing and bearing better for me.
However, I would rather have the Razors on than nothing as they do an excellent job of hearing protection.

A lot of home invasion videos that I've seen show multiple preps scattering in all directions really fast. Just because you heard the clumsy one downstairs, doesn't mean quiet ones aren't already upstairs. Most high value items are kept in the master bedroom or office. The instructor never respected his six. I get the positional dominance that the top of the stairs gives, but you are at increased threat getting there from places the perps could already be at on the second floor, or up from the stairwell as he walked past it to clear the 2nd floor.
Retreating with the others to the closet where the shot gun was seems far wiser,. You posting at the closet door with only the shotgun, a small portion of your arm, and your right eye exposed, and the others down and out of sight behind you, would be far more defensible. The perp would have to open and pass through the bedroom door, the fatal funnel, and since he doesn't expect you to be there because you haven't exposed yourself by flashing flashlights everywhere, and because he's amped up and on the clock, he won't be expecting you, you can wreck him with the shotgun instantaneously, with the rest of the perps likely scattering like cochroachs. All this without exposing yourself, the others, or your position to the bad guys. Your male ego may not like giving up it's moment of glory, but your family not having to bury you might be a good trade off.
It is good to pratice clearing your house, both from your perspective, then from the perps perspective, then back again, is vital, in case you have go to someone or something in another room, but room, or building clearing, especially by yourself, is a bitch, especially if you give the perp any idea where you are.
Also consider lighting. You can set up little plug-in night lights that will backlight the perps but not you. Inside security cameras like Ring act as alarms, but also let you know how many and where the perps are. You have to weigh their advantage against the potential loss of privacy and other issues if your system gets hacked by criminals on both sides of the government. (Government v non-government actors. It's a shame this even has to be brought up these days.)

The only thing I had for home defense at the start of the pandemic/riots/election season of 2020 was a New England Firearms Pardner. It's a single barrel, break-open 20 gauge shotgun. I regretted selling it because I've had that shotgun since I was a child, but I needed something more suitable for home defense at the time and didn't have that much money.
I traded in the Pardner for a 12 guage pump shotgun. When my ARts and crafts project was finally finished, that 12 guage was traded in to take a chunk out of the Vortex SPARC red dot sight's price tag and that rifle has been my home defense gun ever since.

Get a Nam era claymore bag. They where made to hold two claymores with a shoulder strap.
Fill one pocket with slugs, one pocket with buckshot. Grab it anytime you grab the the gun for home defense, or drills.
You never know how many people there are in an attack, what if your gun tube runs out and you haven't eliminated the multiple threats.

Outdoor motion detection sensors are a must around the entire permitter of your home so that you are alerted as they are approaching and before they enter. clearing a building with anything that big is more trouble than its worth. While I believe your should be able to do it as a American citizen, I would still rather clear a house with something like a handgun that is less of an encumbrance than that of a handgun. I hated clearing house with an M4 in iraq because it was always getting caught on things, bumping into something, or knocking things over, when I wouldve just perferred something lighter and easier to handle, like an m1911.
Edit: I would also like to point that anything you use in home defense is the thing that will be confiscated as evidence so, it is better to use something inexpensive, that you dont really care about. handguns should generally be cheaper than shotguns simply because of less materials used.

And that’s your right as long as you know the local laws and that your family is safe.
If I don’t need to engage, it’s probably better that I don’t, especially if LEOs are on the way so I don’t get mistaken as one of the criminals. If it’s a ranch house or your family members are in different rooms all bets are off.
I know how to handle my home, regardless of the situation, and everyone else should too.

  • @gungadinn

The biggest advantage that a shotgun has over an rifle or handgun is that from 25 feet away, improved cylinder #4 shot it's going to have a 8-10 inch spread and the noise isn't a deafening as a high powered rifle. added benefit is that you don't have an over penetration problem. The round won't penetrate 2 sheets of drywall and a batt of fiberglass insulation.
Having fired both inside of a AR and a 12 gauge inside a structure, the explosion and muzzle flash on a 223 is deafening .
Remington made a folding stock for the 870 Wingmaster shotgun. It's short so no issue with clearing a room.

    • @Bogo___
      @Bogo___ Před 9 měsíci +2

@ChanceandChoice Kayla Giles had USCCA insurance when she shot her estranged husband in fear for her life. She chose a lawyer through USCCA and that lawyer said it was a good case for self defense. The insurance company disregarded her lawyers POV and prior to her getting to trial, removed coverage. Therefore, she, who had paid for coverage from the USCCA, did not receive what she had paid for and had to go get another lawyer to fight her case. She lost the case but that should not matter as the case was not decided upon when the USCCA removed her coverage prior to trial commencing.

@Bogo___ call me skeptical, but it always seemed like a scam to me, so I never got any insurance. Chances in the US are fairly slim of using a weapon in self defense anyway, their insurance isn't a guarantee of protection from prosecution, so I'd rather save up money for a retainer fee. It's not cheap, but it's a much better bet on our part. But in the meantime I'm just banking on not getting into an altercation, just like they are.
