I went to USCCA's Proving Grounds, where they put me through realistic scenario-based training where I would likely use my gun in self-defense.
After going through these intense scenarios, I sat with a former state prosecutor to discuss the thin line between justified & unjustified homicide.

That's usually the case. People are more afraid of the aftermath than the actual threat, which paralyzes them.

Criminals are just people exploiting the law. It's treason for the government to make laws to punish citizens for protecting their people and themselves. A criminal is always a deadly threat and if they get away they will kill you or someone else later.

I’ve been a cop for several years. I’ve seen a lot of shootings. I’ve seen a few righteous self defense shootings and they were handled appropriately by our detectives and DA. No charges.

It depends more on the DA and jurisdiction rather than the “courts are broken”. A shooting in LA with a Soros prosecutor will be treated differently than the exact same shooting in Florida.
What a SWAT instructor taught us once, “how many times did you shoot” answer is always “multiple times”.
But you only tell your lawyer that. Not a LEO.

As a citizen, you're expected to be thinking about all this legal crap when your life's in possible danger.
It isn't that hard to commit to memory when you just do your due diligence and stay informed on the laws of your State. This kind of stuff is why training and education are so vital. Just a few hours of learning every week or even every month could save you a lot of lost time in the future. Also best to avoid living in or traveling to leftist States that have made self defense a crime.

IF..they ARE practicing attorneys THEY ALREADY KNOW the law! They don’t go through law “school” saying “I’m going to be a defense OR prosecutor”. They HAVE TO KNOW BOTH sides of the law!
@@m118lr that may be true, but it’s much different when you are in the scenario. I worked corrections for 10 years and had multiple different uses of force, it’s different in the moment than afterwards writing a report or statement about it. IMO.

However, all these USCCA videos and particularly that attorney who was a former prosecutor continually push that "you are going to prison" message. I have a USCCA membership and these videos are making me question if they will really have my back if the unthinkable ever occurs.

My thing is, he committed a crime which if he got time for it, he wouldn't be able to get a gun because of the background check so yea he lost that privilege when he said "give me all your money"
Anyone committing a crime should also forfeit their right or the families right to sue for death or bodily injury.

Its absurd to think that a person in this scenario could be charged with anything. 3 shots or empty a mag, the threat is a threat u til the surrender or stop moving. Prosecutors that try and find a reason to charge you in a scenario like this are only trying to add bullet points to their resume and are vile human beings.

Some places you and I quote "Have a duty to retreat" which means you have to bail out your house. Surrender it to the threat and wait for I guess police to come from who knows where and save you.

How a person defending themselves and others could end up in prison for life simply Because in the heat of the moment the last round fired at the criminal he turned his shoulder and hit him in the back. Exactly! There absolutely ARE behaviors you can engage in that WILL strip you of your self defense plea. However, there are no circumstances (such as these) where a criminal's behavior will indemnify you for trying to stop or possibly use a firearm. Similarly, if an emergency vehicle is responding code 3(lights and sirens) they can kill you running a red light and they are EXEMPT from prosecution or civil liability. Oops, sorry about that!
Its a shame we live in a society where the justice system asks "could they have ran away" ... you should be under ZERO obligation to flee. You should have *every single right* to stop the threat! It doesnt have to just be a threat to you, it can be a treat to anyone in the public!
In most states you do have zero obligation to flee. There’s only a handful of states that don’t have stand your ground, most of which are in the northeast.

All you have to do is go home. If I'm ever in a position where I have to blow someone away I won't be anywhere near the scene when the police arrive. If you wear gloves when you load up the gun you don't need to ever worry about finger prints. Whatever you touched in a public setting even if they have your prints for whatever reason they cannot use it against you because hundreds of others have also touched it before you. There's a reason why once a dine and dasher has gotten away as long as they don't have their plate they cannot prosecute. If you park at least a quarter of a mile away from wherever you intend to go into they cannot obtain your plate. The best city in the world to carry a gun in is new York because there are so many fucking people and a million different escape options once you get away they cannot get you.

But a friend of mine did point out that USCCA sells insurance so you got to take what these videos show with a grain of salt. But then again all it takes is one prosecutor out to make a name for themselves to screw you.
More of these. These types of scenarios and analysis help you train your mind to know what to do and when to do it rather than purely guessing and hoping that your actions are defensible in an irrational system.

For some lawyers, it's isn't about justice, it's a challenge for them to twist the wording of the law enough that they can win. And never forget that a dead criminal can't sue you for emotional damages in civil court.

As a former police officer, I’m amazed that there is this much hindsight applied to civilians just trying to do the right thing. I worked in Shreveport, LA, one of the more violent mid-sized cities, and I truly believe that the prosecutors I worked with would not have gone to those lengths to try to bring charges against a Good Samaritan who just saw a cashier get smoked, and then shot the suspect in the back during a gunfight. We were taught in the police academy to never fire on a fleeing suspect unless there was an imminent threat against someone else the suspect may come across during the flight. If he just shot a cashier, then engaged in a gunfight inside a coffee shop, I highly doubt he was going to give up his life of crime when he exited the store. I don’t know where this scenario was initiated, but I cannot imagine a conviction based on charges brought in this situation. That being said, this scenario reinforced my beliefs in just being a good witness until you or your family is in danger, because I’m sure this is a real life event numerous times a year. Thank you very much for this video. It’s an excellent situation based training that everyone carrying a firearm should consider.

But it’s gotten to the point where that thought has to cross your mind before you draw/fire, and that’s even more dangerous. I just hope I never have to face that scenario.
The fact that a citizen can be charged with a crime when stopping a murderer is beyond unacceptable. That needs to change.

What the slimy lawyer in this video did was blur the lines between duty to retreat states and stand your ground states. In most states where the vast majority of ccw holders live there is no duty to retreat and this shooting is considered justified. These USCCA videos are aimed at making people in stated with stand your ground laws and no duty to treat fear use of force like they live in commifornia or new york so they will buy insurance. Its sales via fearmongering.
He was not a murderer. He did not murder anybody. He did not even get any shots off. The penalty for robbery is not death. the penalty for armed robbery is not death. In most places the penalty for murder is not death. The issue here is who had the right to self-defense against the threat of death or great bodily harm? And as the prosecutor/defense attorney points out there is a legitimate question as to whether or not the bad guy had the right to self-defense because the guy on the couch may have pulled out the first gun and pointed it at the bad guy who was startled and reacted by pulling out his gun... In self-defense. At which point there was a (ever so brief) standoff with no shooting until Colion started shooting.

Good thing about the southern states with “Stand Your Ground” this law eliminates the duty to retreat and you can ACTUALLY DEFEND yourself and/or loved one
Most states actually have stand your ground as part of their laws. But don't make the mistake of thinking it means something that it doesn't. All stand your ground means is that your state's laws don't require you to attempt to retreat as a necessary element of a valid self defense claim. It does NOT mean that the fact that you didn't make an attempt to retreat cannot be considered as a factor in determining whether your self defense claim is valid. If you had a clear opportunity to retreat or otherwise avoid the fight and chose not to the prosecutor will absolutely make the argument that any reasonable person would have in same circumstances. They will be allowed to make that argument and the jury will be allowed to consider it. Because it can be relevant to all of the critical factors of a valid self defense claim. Namely that you were not the aggressor, that the level of force you used was proportional to the threat, and that your actions were reasonable under the circumstances.

Another bit of advice that should be included in this video: Don't talk to the cops without your lawyer present. They alluded to giving incorrect information in a statement to police and how that could get you in trouble. Simple answer is just don't answer those questions without a lawyer to guide you.
This just proves how messed up our legal system is that either of these scenarios would cause legal troubles for someone defending themselves or others.

Good thing that second situation would not be winnable for a prosecutor. There is ZERO reason to prosecute Colion in that situation.
i learned about the court system in my bad boy youth days-preteen/teenager,it's a monster !!! LOL. An attorney or a judge would come up with 3 or 4 different ways i could've handled my situations or bring up some ancient law/laws to hammer you with. Be very careful folks with your guns and how/when you use them or you'll share a cell with Big Earl or Lil Ray-Ray.And they'll be the husband and you'll be their WIFE. LOL.
I mean there should to an extent. Anyone can shot and possibly kill another and claim self defense. That's the whole point of their being a legal process.
Obviously it shouldn't be nearly as much of a pain in the ass but it's ridiculous to say that there should be no legal proceedings in a self defense case for the reason I mentioned
@@doms.6701 Due process, is what you're talking about, plain and simple. Everyone gets their day in court. Each situation is handled on a case by case basis.
With the billions upon billions of variables in each self-defense situation, due process is required.
I get your point. If the girlfriend kicks the guy in the nuts as he runs out the door, and she escapes, then you give chase, he stumbles, and you thump him in the head with two rounds, you're guilty of murder. If, instead, you do not give chase, high five your girlfriend for quick thinking, and then pull security until the police get there, you have avoided jail.
It's the nature of the beast where variables require scrutiny and reason.

They are being realistic, the reason why they offer insurance is because no matter how valid your reasons were you will most likely be either charged or sued after the fact.
They are there to protect you and represent you when it happens.
I'm I'm military law enforcement, they have repeatedly told us that regardless of how valid your reason is...someone is going to put you through the ringer after the shooting.
Seriously. It's like the NY gun laws, oh so the SC says you can conceal carry? We'll just make it illegal to conceal carry anywhere except your yard. We have the right to self defense, we're just not actually allowed to use it in 99% of cases.

No one ever brings up the suspect, while running away, can still run and shoot at you. They can torque their body with the gun in hand and shoot at you, meaning his back will still be exposed.

Tennessee V Garner allows a police officer to shoot a fleeing suspect if they believe that they are a danger to others. This guy in the scenario is absolutely a threat to others, who knows what he does with that gun after this. Any attorney who argues that you can't because you're a civilian is an idiot.

I'm nearly 70. My orthopedist & I doubt that I'm going to retreat anywhere quickly.
There's what's lawful to do and then there's what's smart to do. It could be smart to retreat if the situation allows for it. Just because you can stand your ground, doesn't mean you should.
What if I retreat to the parking lot and the bad guy follows and shoots ME in the back ? Then what? I rather shoot when I have the chance to save my life and others than running and been killed like a pussy.
At the end of the day. Every man for himself. If you can escape, get tf out. Sounds messed up, but these laws will screw you in the long run for trying to do right… your chances are way better protecting yourself and your family on/in your property

I'm a Vietnam veteran and years ago I took the canceled weapons class, I decided not to get the license after all that you have to face if you shoot someone, or places that you cant take a gun. Another issue when you have one in the car. If you can always try to get out of the incident. I still think about the "enemy" human beings in Nam !PTSD is still effecting me 53 years later!
I took the class with the intention of getting my concealed license but upon further consideration due to the courts/jury/legal system I came to the conclusion that better for me to not carry a firearm and face prison for what boils down to a difference of opinion. In this time we are in now, last 5 years, better to evade the threat or use another type of force to de-escalate the situation. Sad it has come to this but it's where we have come.

I recently purchased a hand gun and got my concealed carry permit and after some thought and deliberation I came to the same conclusion.
I will continue to do my best to avoid confrontations and be street smart, which has served me well for 33 years of life.
My handgun has now been relegated to a locking safe and the occasional range day.
To me, court hearings and possible prison time is on par if not worse than taking “the long nap”

I have a question regarding the second scenario: So the fact that the cashier was murdered in the first few seconds of the scenario does NOT automatically give the "good guy" the right to engage the threat at any time (BEFORE his girlfriend was kidnapped) in order to protect his life and that of the others? That's the important question for me.

Always retreat and withdraw if possible. Even at home. Your case is much more defensible if you retreated, called the cops and engaged only when you had nowhere to go. Even in castle doctrine jurisdictions, it is not worth the risk of some DA who wants to be a judge or Congressman trying to make you an example. I’ve practiced criminal defense in LA, NY and NV. Mostly violent crimes against persons including murder trials as well as federal level drug cases. Stay safe.

Loved the video! At 8:42, I yelled, “Yeah!” That was perfect! Great sense of judgment in a very difficult situation!
The fact that the law can be manipulated in order to put people who act in defense of themselves or others in prison makes me angry.
Yet it doesn't make you angry when the law works, and those who unjustifiably murder others do go to prison. The law shouldn't and can't be manipulated. For a jury to convict it must be unanimous agreement without a doubt. Innocent until proven guilty. While there are edge cases where the jury got it wrong, 99% of the time, if it was defense, you will be found innocent.

@@MasterYoist You are correct that I don't know the case you are talking about. Maybe the Derick Chauvin trial? Which while you may not agree with the ruling, he may not have been 100% blameless and entirely innocent.
Congrats on proving my point though about there being a couple edge cases. That less than 0.01% of cases really shakes my faith in the justice system. Of course, for every Chauvin, there are more than 100 Rittenhouse cases.

In 1987 my wife and I unknowingly walked into an armed robbery in progress. We were taken at gunpoint, tied up and laid face down in a back room and held hostage for 30 minutes. I wasn't armed. Even if I were, I would have had no opportunity to draw my weapon. I experienced every emotion you can conceive of. Just like Colion, it was anger, fear, anger and fear. The effects never really dissipate, even decades later. All I know is that I never want to experience that again without at least having an option to defend myself and my loved ones.
Thank you for sharing your story with all of us and being an honest, concerned American. It's people like you that make this a great country.

Thank you for sharing your story. That's such a horrible situation when you have no opportunity to fight back and held. It is hard to process after. (I won't use to much detail in my situation) I lived in a sketchy area, I was working on my carry permit at the time. 1 guy in my neighborhood thought another guy ratted him out for something. No idea what. Don't care. He pulled an illegal gun on the guy pretty much at my front door as I was stepping out. Well guy with the gun pointed at him ducked behind a car and someone else yelled. So bad guy realized he was in the open with a gun as cops came down the street, a few blocks away. All in a split second to process the gun was turned to me, finger on the trigger ( tip up Beretta, I will never forget it) he pushed me in my house. Made me sit and kept the gun trained on me while I tried to de-esculate the situation. Cops outside my door, walking around the street and this guy said make a sound and I will f#cking kill you. He was serious. He waited what felt like a lifetime to look out the window. At this point it was clear of police but he didn't want to leave. He became more irrational and pulled the slide to chamber a round to aim at me and ejected the round in the chamber. Now I knew for sure he was loaded. A few more mins of talking this psychopath down and told him to go out the back. He turned one last time and aimed at my face and said he would end me if I called the cops. I knew my area and response time, the instability of this lunatic. I realized if the cops came back on the street I might get clipped even if I didn't call. Once he was out of sight the adrenaline really hit. At the moment I was stupidly calm or maybe it was realizing if I was acting upset he would become worse. God only knows. A few weeks later he was arrested for other charges and I forgot about the round he ejected until I was cleaned under the couch one night. Seeing that was a gut punch reminded of how lucky I was. I vowed to leave that area and never be defenseless again. In the months following that area went full 3rd world country. I got out right after a burglary while I was in the process of relocating. I still have that round he ejected as a reminder of being thankful for everyday and how seriously I need to take the security of the ones I love and myself. Still to this day I believe if I had tried to fight back or made an attempt to alert police he would have killed me on the spot. I can't say why for security reasons but I believe he was capable of it after hearing things I believe he us still in prison for today.
I know this seems like a lot of details, I left out a lot of what would identify me in this event. That was one of the scariest moments of my life and thank God my GF at the time didn't walk in the door while this was playing out. She would have made this wayyy worse. On occasion when I got for a range day or a training I look at the round. Not very often does someone hold the bullet that was meant for them. Sobering feeling for sure.
9 month pregnant sister and I where caught in a robbery in a Subway sandwich shop, we ran and hid on the bathroom floor while the guy robbed the place. Shots where fired but no one was hurt. After the fact the cashier told us he'd been robbed multiple times while working there and we overheard him quiting his job then and there, when we where talking to the police we learned that the robber was just going up the street robbing places all morning, we never learned if they caught the guy, and we never got any follow-up on the matter.
Every time I think about it, it's the feeling of helpless that lingers. A law won't protect you, a cop isn't going to always be there. In my mind, if such a vast majority of people are good, and then such a vast majority of people are armed, we'd all be safer for it.
I very much plan on being a gun owner in the foreseeable future, as you perfectly said, to never experience that again without at least having the option to defend myself and my loved ones.
@@kylecook4806 Damn. That's a rough one. I explained a very similar feeling being held at gun point in my house above. That helpless feeling is horrible. I still get it some when I think about it but being armed now really does take some of that away. Even knowing someone may get the drop on you, you know that split second window you have you aren't helpless. If you have the ability to carry and own I would encourage you to do so. Get training in real world scenarios like this and medical. It helps so much with the helplessness. If you can't fight back at least you know you did all that you could with what you had.
I do wish there was more opportunity for regular people to go through this kind of training.

Honestly I would love that, it would be a good thing for a lot of regular people to practice with this, because Ive first hand seen the actions of trained vs untrained people, when the store I worked at got robbed I was the one who took charge and tried to keep us safe by de-escalating the situation and saying the best I could to make sure the robbers were satisfied and dont shoot anyone, though we didnt have access to the register because of a cash shortage and the manager being out for the day, which really made it difficult because my priority was nobody gets hurt, meanwhile while Im trying to keep my nerves in check (which was really hard because the closest to real world training under stress, rather than just in an office for training, was airsoft, which is nothing compared to this) and follow my training my untrained coworkers panicked, made multiple sudden movements, etc, and Im surprised theyre still alive, if all of us had training (and we had something to give the robbers because their goal was money) it would have been a safer situation, and thats just how a very difficult situation was, the training in the video would very well help with situations where de-escalation is less of an option or where the goal isn't to take property (because if the goal is property, just give it, property can be replaced, life can't), such as if someone is being abducted or its someone there for murder

Police officers are protected by the law - normal people are not. And the people in power hate that anyone but the government storm-troopers have a right to violence, they want to have absolute monopoly on it.
The Police have a blanket immunity clause, or a different set of rules they are allowed to operate by. As to your first point, it is a legal principle called Innocent Until PROVEN Guilty. Most countries use the opposite approach of Guilty until PROVEN innocent.

It’s interesting how a prosecutor might vilify someone risking their life to aid others, yet should one flee to save themselves leaving others to ultimately die, they would be vilified for that. The Kitty Genovese case is a perfect example of criticizing society and bystanders (the bystander effect) for NOT coming to others aid. Just yesterday, a gunman opened fire in an Indiana Mall and I’m sure it could be argued the citizen who killed him could have fled. He might have even put a round in his back in the heat of the situation. The individual is being called a hero and I expect no prosecution, even if those possibilities are true.
IMO, once one displays a deadly weapon, especially a firearm and are threatening others, they forfeit consideration of safety by those placed into a position of defense because of it.

Great video. This is really important for people to see because they typically don’t understand the power of adrenaline and the other chemicals that dump into your body during a life or death confrontation. But seeing someone as adept as Coloin struggle with scenarios takes some of that overconfidence we feel and replaces it with humility. I experienced something similar the first time I played paintball. Action may beat reaction but acting too soon can cost you a big chunk of your freedom!

Second scenario: the need for lethal force derives from the blatant killing of the cashier. The assailant displayed that he is willing to and has already possibly killed a person. Them taking the girlfriend sets up continued likely possibility of loss of life if she remains in the possesion of the assailants. Continuinging to fire can be justified because there were 2 assailants, both armed.
@Guido De Based 1561 Kidnapping does come under the forcible felony rule in most states. (I did day most states.... still some libs haven't budged on what constitutes a threat there) The history of kidnapping has shown us that more than 50% of the victims end up dead...so it is reasonable to fear loss of life in an attempt. Deadly force is allowable for a third party in such cases.
I mean they are still deadly threats until they leave the building in scenario 2. Even if they put down their weapons. They might have another weapon.

It’s crazy to think the prosecutor gets to Monday quarterback frame by frame without the adrenaline and fears of what you had to deal with in just seconds with fear and anxiety and adrenaline pumping . And they get to decide your fate without going through the same. And for the medical examination to be used to decide which round killed them . Crazy

If the potential criminal shot and is middle of killing people, making him actual criminal and you shot and killed him. You're free 100% of time you don't even need a lawyer for any sort of obvious defense.
If the potential criminal was just threatening to shoot the employers and whatnot and you took the first shot. You're on the hook as you should be because that guy hasn't committed a crime worthy of being shot and killed before you shot and killed him preemptively.

And the video and I is trying to convey that line which will determine the verdict lies with "can you shoot first to prevent someone from shooting and get away with it" because now we never know if that guy was going to shoot because you stopped him but you definitely shot.

Honestly the fact that our country has a line this thins should be illegal. When we allow criminals a right to self defense in the middle of omitting a crime is beyond me. The moment you involve a deadly weapon in a crime your right to self defense should be forfeit. No one in the heat of the moment should have to consider spending years of their life behind bars because they're trying to protect themselves or others from a criminal with a weapon. Our legal system only ever seems to work against good people these days while letting the criminals out easy.

I’m Australian…a Queenslander to be precise. They’ve changed the self defence laws some years back so that you can defend yourself with lethal force, BUT there are a lot of caveats. A guy about twenty years ago had some guys kicking his door in at 2am…he owned speedway cars and a large workshop, the guys were trying to steal money and tools. He warned them that he was armed, and as they opened the door, he fired a .22 rifle through the door, wounding one of the attackers.
HE was the one arrested and found himself in court, looking at jail time. Luckily he was acquitted, but people were outraged. What was he supposed to do? Wait for the bad guys to break in and see what happened?
Now they use a lot of “proportional force” crap. If the attacker has a knife, then you had better have a great excuse for shooting him, even if he’s in your house.
Equal force laws are stupid. The aggressor already has the advantage of choosing the time, place, and means of an attack.
Jury nullification is all that matters. Everyone must use it to protect ourselves from a despotic system.

I found it strange though that Colin said that he shot 3 times and the reenactment had him shooting more. However the way the reenactment played out wasn’t the way Colion reacted. Colion almost immediately began walking sideways towards the cashier. The reenactment did not show that.
If you're currently in the act of committing a crime, you have no right to self defense. That's insane.
Except you actually do, depending on what is happening. Obviously an armed robbery means your are threatening death or serious harm, and others can defend themselves from you. But if it is petty theft or something simpler you may have grounds to stand on. If you shoplift from a store or gas station, and as you are leaving, you are chased out with a gun, you can turn and fire to defend yourself.
Everything is subjective, and laws differ state to state. Each case is unique, which is why they are all tried individually and no blanket statement can be given.

Strong arm robbery is threatening violence. Shoplifting is not. If I take a bag of chips and run, I am of no danger to you. If you decide to hunt me down, you are now threatening violence, not me. I now am the one in a position of defense, because you showed violence first and I am retreating. Even if I have wronged you by stealing, you as an average citizen are not authorized to do police work.

That was a great training situation... that being said.. the laws and legal views need some changing... when a gun is pulled ur life is now in danger... getting shot in the back is the risk u take when u r committing a crime.. there should be no repercussions towards the person who shot the criminal..
That’s exactly it. The second someone points a gun at me or near my direction, is the second I see a violation of one of rules of gun safety. I’m gonna 100% assume that that intention behind that gun is to shoot and kill me. Point blank.

I think it's insane that we are expected to thread the needle in situations like these. I'm sure people die because garbage like this breeds hesitation. If someone draws down on you it should be a clear cut justification to shoot them. If they have already shot someone indiscriminately, it should be clear cut justification to shoot them. How many people are they allowed to shoot before someone who could end the threat (you) is allowed to act? This makes me angry.

My advice, take down the perp and save your life. Hesitation can cost you your life. Deal with the legal consequences later. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
Also, say nothing to the police until you speak with an attorney. Some are clueless to their own state's laws while others believe they are the only ones that should have guns. Be polite, ID yourself, and request an ambulance to be taken to the ER for ringing ears, shortness of breath, anxiety or anything else you may be suffering from and not realize it. It will give you time to gather your thoughts on what happened while waiting for a lawyer.
The fact that a simple “thank you for defending yourself and other fellow citizens, go about you day” can turn into multiple years in prison….. Just shows how this justice system is useless.
Never give a statement after a shooting. Respectfully state that you defended yourself and state that you want a lawyer before you give a statement. Period.

@@Linkophere In my experience, I found that generally giving the police a direction to proceed in their investigation w/o incriminating yourself is best. You want that contact with LEO to help set the direction of the investigation in your favor. “I defended myself” is not incriminating. Thereafter you let them know you’re respectfully requesting counsel before making any further statements. My card used to have this request printed on the back so citizens could just hand it to the cop.

“The shot to the back……” Why is this a question? It seemed apparent the man was about to try and commit an armed robbery. Even if the alleged criminal was fleeing, he still had a gun in his hand. Could he have started shooting behind him as he was fleeing? Yes. There was a cop killer here in NYC who was on a bicycle with a handgun while fleeing from the cops. As he was pedaling away he shot multiple times behind him. One of the shots traveled 70 yards and struck a police officer between the eyes killing him instantly. Was the perp a threat while fleeing with a firearm? Yes.

It's a dumb presumption based on old chivalric ideas that it's dishonorable to attack a fleeing enemy. The problem is that the enemy is not chivalrous and doesn't care about honor.
You get milliseconds to make the right decision in a scenario you are or are not trained for, but the lawyers get all the time and all the evidence to present to jurors, that probably know nothing about this situation, who get hours to decide your fate, all without a gun to their heads.

@@wacobeer6469 from a legal sense a predatory prosecutor could argue that it wasn’t a deadly threat to you because you were x distance away. I would argue in defense of a third person, the cashier but it could still happen that you get prosecuted.
Blades can kill faster than a gun can. Just a single cut a quarter inch deep in the right place and it's unconscious in 30 seconds, gone forever in 1 minute. Literally the ONLY thing that changes with a blade is that the news will still say the bad guy was "unarmed" because he didn't have a gun, it already happened multiple times in the media. You'll lose the case on the news, but a Biology expert can help you win the case in court as long as the judge is competent and not a coward.
I feel that something important to discuss, is the importance of "NEVER talking to the police or the prosecution". This is just as important as making sure your use of force is justified.
Dropping info, like the 3 vs 8 shots in the first scenario, is entirely possible, and the police/prosecution WILL use that against you. And just like you don't talk to the police, you never testify as a defendant! For lawyers, questioning people is their career, you don't stand a chance. They will pound any evidence against you to get any sort of evidence of wrongdoing to the court.
The only things you should ever say to the police when they are questioning you are:
1.I wish to remain silent
2.I want a lawyer
Anything else is just asking to be thrown in jail. We have the right to remain silent in this country, so use it damn it, and shut up!
And you should not even give a formal statement to the police until you've had 3 nights of sleep after a defensive shooting. That is something that is taught in CCW classes. And definitely have an attorney present.
Saying it was self defense/defending others is ok if that is all you do say, so the order for me is:
1. It was self defense/defending others (not another word after this statement)
2. I wish to remain silent
3. I want a lawyer
@@jrobinson5661 Well said. You want to say as little as possible to the police after a self defense shooting. In this scenario the cops are your adversary. They can use anything you say against you in court.
It really is a shame that shooting a bad guy to protect your life puts your freedom on the line. Especially in states that don't have stand your ground laws. Every state should have this law! It is the one thing that can really save your @$$.

Been carrying for over 30 yrs, but I still remember a very important lesson we were taught about perception and reality. It involves an actual incident.
A man (call him p1) pulls up to a convenience store, and through the window he sees a plain clothed man pointing a gun toward the direction of where the clerk would be, behind the counter. P1 can not see behind the counter, only the armed 'assailant'. Believing he was witnessing an armed robbery, he fired through the window, killing the 'perp'.
What he (p1) only found out afterwards, was he shot a plain clothed off duty PO, who had the actual 'perp', who was holding a knife to the clerks throat, at gunpoint.
Now, I don't remember what happened (charge wise) to p1, and I know 'any reasonable person' would believe the PO was the assailant.
But it taught me a very valuable lesson. Any situation could (& probably will) have multiple unknown/unknowable facts to you pertaining to the circumstances, and you could ruin your life by presumption and acting too quickly or impulsively.
These live scenarios are the BEST training. Keep up the great work Colion.

In that scenario , the guy wasnt even in the store so he had no need to engage. He wasnt in danger. This is why its important to mind your damn business. Dont ever get involved in 3rd party incidents. Its not always clear to tell whos the good or bad guy. And its actually more dangerous than if you were directly involved.

They could have added that to this scenario too. Like have someone outside the cafe and hear the shots and rush inside. Depending on the timing there's a point where the bad guy is gone, people are on the ground and it's just Colin standing there with his gun out....

a gun is a tool , albeit a deadly tool . Not having the proper skills to use said tool or having the right mindset in times of crisis to use that tool properly is where problems can start .
I have believed in the merits of doing more than the minimum in prepared skills. and abilities to respond to a self defense scenario. in the CCW class.they try make you understand it's more than just having the gun.and bad choices (even if they seem right) can ruin your life and possibly other's.
Hearing it from someone trying to prepare you is one thing. Seeing or participating in something like this video.brings a better understanding of how important that message is.

Yeah, in my 20s my biggest fear was coming upon a violent rape in progress because I'd have had a difficult time meeting force with force requirements. Basically I'd be tempted to blow off his cock with a terrified crying female as my justification. Now I don't carry because I exchanged shots in self defense but our legal system is corrupt beyond belief so I plead out loosing my rights. Never take a plea, no matter how bad they make it sound, they are just as vile as any other criminal gang out there, they just work for the state and use cops as muscle.
Our county sheriff's department does a citizen's firearm fundamentals class. They have a fancy simulator that they give you time on. It's very enlightening and a great training tool.

Thank you for this perspective. I've been a USCCA member for two years now and I am not going to go into court defenseless if it comes down to me having to defend my life or someone elses life.
A common fatal mistake is thinking that criminals use the same decision making and morals as the majority of society. The killing of the cashier is a prime example of how they value, or dont value, life. I hope i can get into some similar training. Solid material sir. Thank you.
