Without the Hero, there might not even be a G-Shock. Funny that the original model, the DW-5000C only had a one year one before the hero came out. Screwbacks rule!

The older ones, until 5600C, were built a lot better because if you destroy the plastic bezel you can still use the watch without it, since they have a proper metal case. New ones, apart from very expensive versions, are all plastic and if you crack the bezel you cannot use it anymore until you change it

Hi there, I bought a DW5200 in October 1984, it served me well, I was in the military and I didn’t baby it, but it took anything that was thrown at it. A seriously solid watch, with not a scratch on on the face. I stopped wearing it when the battery ran out and that was well over ten years and put it away, not remembering where I had put it. I found it in my loft a few years ago, the strap was still quite good and I thought the plastic outer was ok until I touched it and it broke into 3 pieces. Rather than just wear it without, like I’ve seen some do, I went about trying to source a new bezel. Well there is a vendor in Brazil that makes them, pretty close in quality and I see now on eBay that there is somewhere in Portugal that sells them.....must be something about Portuguese, I guess! Anyway, I bought a new band and bezel and the thing looks like brand new. One thing I have noticed Is that DW5200 often seem to have the lcd slightly on the tilt, yours does and so does mine. Absolutely legendary timepieces.

Message to myself two years later, take the back off and gently twist the module until it is straight again. The score back case is the issue, it moves the module around when you screw it back, doh!

@@delayedcreator4783 sure is, Delayed Creator! I meant screw back, of course. With regard to todays standards, it’s not that accurate for a quartz, but the batteries seem to last forever. Amazing build, I barely wear it, because I don’t want to damage it, which misses the point, but I can’t help thinking this will definitely out last me, 😆

    I bought my first G-Shock in '83. It was either a dw-5000 or a 5200.

Gave it to my little nephew 33 years ago. That hockey puck ad sold me on it as well. I still wear G-shocks to this day.

John Smith - Yes, it’s a gold version of the DW-5600E with a 1545 module. It was the watch that had the four screw plate back as opposed to the DW-5600C and DW-5200C which have screw back cases and stainless steel cases.

Nietha 120296 really? I notice the 5200 does not have a serial number, so you might be right, as the ones from 1984 started being made from June of that year.
